this was so famous with Jeff Porcaro drumming. i love someone put the camera on the drummer thru all of this. imagine the concentration he needed to be right on time throughout this. this is what a great drummer actually does - he is the ultimate time-keeper for the band. the drummer is kind of like the offensive or defensive linemen in football. they are rarely recognized, but if they are great the team is ready to succeed, if they fail ... not much can help the rest of the players.
Certainly, as Toto were actually Boz’ studio musician backing band during the recording of Silk Degrees…Steve Lukather said that both Steve & Mike Porcaro were both exceptional professional musicians🎶🎙️🎸🥁
David your interpretation of Jeff’s grove is as close as it gets to the original…. I had been waiting for you to post this but found it here…. Well done friend!
One of the best drummers in Nashville. Dvaid Northup has played for many, many artists the last one being Travis Tritt. He makes it look so easy, smooth and very professional. Love to hear him play and better to watch!
Loved this since I was a kid about 8 or 9 when it came out and I never tire of listening to it. It's weird what song(s) sticks in your mind and why ? Same with Killer Queen, I remember exactly where we were driving in the car, and it stuck immediately in my brain and has remained ever since.
I have never gotten to see a song that I love from the drummer's perspective. I am fascinated. He made it look so easy. How does a drummer never lose the beat? Is it in their mind? Really a beautiful thing. Sincerely, Carly
I can't believe I missed this! I lived in Auburn Heights (now Hills) about 13 miles away from Pontiac. Unfortunately for the concert...I had moved to Florida before this happened. Fortunately for me, I don't have to deal with snow anymore.
i am a professional drummer - i used to be an amateur. when musicians have been around for a while and turn professional, this is the drummer they want. it is a team game. the amateurs are amateurs and they have their place, but the professional gets PAID.
Well played David, you're a great drummer. I like this shuffle. The first time I saw Jeff Porcaro was in this video of Bozz Scaggs - Lido Shuffle Warm greetings
Simple beat on drums....but ultra hard to make it feel right...and this here does! Great job! (there is nothing simple about this song...it is deceptive)
Great job David! I love that you were able to be faithful to the feel of the original while clearly having a great time and making it your own. I couldn't have enjoyed it more!
Great video! It's so rare to get the drummer's perspective. I am not a drummer, but this vid let me focus on Mr. Northrup's excellent technique while the sound mix seemed to be from stage front.
Smooth like butter and that Great Gretsch Sound! I got to meet you and see you play this groove at your last clinic at The Don Hamrick Drum Center in North Myrtle Beach. I bought the Renown kit you played during it. My band wants to start working on this song so I am taking lots of notes, hopefully things will click for me and I can get it. Hope to see you again at the beach. Mike
I've been a fan of David since he joined the Oak Ridge Boys. Put a good bass player with him and you've got a rock solid rhythm section! Awesome drummer!
@@Mikados_Advark12 Boz is a road dog, man. When you play every other night for 4+ decades, you have to preserve your voice. Most guys do it by riffing certain high notes a little differently. He can still do it, no doubt. But doing it 16 times per song, 5 nights a week, year after year, somethings gonna give if you don’t keep yourself healthy and alter your technique a bit
Thanks Jack. Back then I was still using Zildjians. 14” Mastersound Hi Hats, 21” K Organic Ride, 17, 19, 18” K Crashes, 17” K China and 10” A Splash.... that is if my memory serves me well. Since then I have moved to all Paiste Cymbals.
Our band used to play this. It never sounded this boring. I guess after playing "the song" for 50 years, it gets a little tedious. Write a new hit, guys! It's easy, right? The whole money for nothing thing? 🤣🤣🤣
@@Psychodermia you’re a total amateur…. The reason I know this is that a true professional and talented musician would never make a comment like this as they know the common variables of touring…. Good nights band nights…. You see someone like yourself has nothing better to do than sit on the sideline and judge having never performed at this level…. We mock what we don’t understand. Your comment is unwarranted….. your Little band that played the VFW for 12 people performed this? Better? Man it would be awesome to see a video, I bet after reviewing it you’d realize it probably wasn’t as good as you thought! But hey thanks for the positive input…. Allen, that snare is a Gretsch 6.5x14 Solid Brass. 20 Lug.. equipped with Evans Reverse Dot batter if I remember correctly.
Total boss on those drums man .
Whoa 😎🤘

Gather 100 drummers and see how many can actually do this. My guess is one?
why dont these guys sing like the record? ...always chabge notes and pitch .
