  • If you've always dreamed of working with dogs, OR if you already do and you want to upgrade your pet business, this guide to becoming a professional dog trainer is for you!
There are many different paths to becoming a dog trainer, and in this video, I mention a few of them. This is an introduction, so I do recommend doing some more research about dog training regulations in your area, and the programs that are offered near you.
Here are a few good resources! (There are many more, but these are a few that I've heard good things about from trainers that I know). If you'd like to recommend any more please do so in the comments!

Thanks for posting this! I'm a dog trainer myself and I really appreciate that you emphasized on learning some theory first. Unfortunately there are TONS of trainers that start a shadow program and then become trainers straight away, and end up knowing very limited techniques and techniques only. If I were to ask why they do that or how it affects the dog - they wouldn't be able to answer! Which is dangerous, they don't know what they are doing, but think that observing somebody's practical work is theory.
For me, theory comprises body language study, conditioning, learning, psychology etc... not really techniques and methods. If you know HOW dogs learn, then you will always be able to choose what is best for you AND for the dog you are training.
Side note - at 1:23 you said "quadrants of dog training", and although they are used in dog training, they are called quadrants of operant conditioning. They don't quite determine training methods (it is impossible to use only one type), but they are just the four possible learning processes in operant conditioning. There is also classical or Pavlovian conditioning, that is also used by ALL trainers!

You're so right! It really is a balance between theory and practical, and one is not more important than the other. They go hand in hand! And yes, there are a lot of people who focus on one and not the other (which goes both ways).
For your side note, I'm so glad you brought this up! There is a whole section that I filmed and didn't end up putting in because it went into too much detail about training, which I think would have gone over a lot of people's heads. I really wanted this video to be an overview and introduction where people could take key things and do additional research into it, so there are a lot of things that aren't included and I'm glad that you made that point! Hopefully, others will see it too to help their research :) Looking back at it I TOTALLY should have said "operant conditioning" to specify. When making introduction videos I need to keep reminding myself that other people may not know that. Thanks for pointing it out!

@@InRuffCompany No problem! I get carried away with that stuff all the time 😅 I just wanted to point the name out so it's easier for people to do more research on it, but you explained it very clearly!

Thanks for posting this! I'm looking at all the online programs and trying to decide which one I want to do next year and how I will get my hands on experience. Can I ask why you didn't include the Victoria Stillwell Academy? I'm mostly torn between that one and Karen Pryor. It's a bit more expensive, but it looks like they pair you with a mentor and there are more opportunities for hands on, but KPA is better known, so I can feel confident I"ll be getting a good education. I have some time to decide.

Hey Jackie, I'm thinking about becoming a trainer or helping a friend of mine who already owns a training academy. What are the main headaches, roadblocks etc that I should be aware of before hand? Thanks :)

Hi! I’m enjoying but just beginning the Pettable PSD training videos. I just found this video by googling - I was wondering why you don’t recommend taking dogs to a traditional dog park? Is it to minimize injury or disease or something else or all of the above? I was afraid to take my rescue pom adopted from the shelter at first. But wanted to help socialize her. I get the feeling she had never been walked outdoors around other dogs much, she loves walks and the beach and community garden but still skittish about meeting most other dogs on sidewalk walks, parks etc.

im not the op obviously, dont have formal training in this (yet), but to my knowledge its because dog parks have just so many dogs and so many factors to be aware of, an untrained dog could unexpectedly attack your dog, that is the main concern I have and I see others have with do parks bc of how frequently it seems to occur. to me its best to not risk it and find some doggy friends to go on walks or have playdates with as opposed to several uknown dogs that could harm ur dog physically or psychologically. Ive seen it a few times where someones pup gets attacked at a dog park and has ongoing issues with reactivity after that point.
