    I’ve recently visited the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg and viewed this same submarine. Thank you Sir, for explaining what I saw, and clearly what happened with these machines (?) when activated in this battle.
    I recommend the Pacific War Museum as a great tourist stop for the family. The sights and recorded sounds take you back to those days to where you ‘feel’ the desperate war mood.

    I like hearing the detail about the rudder size compared to the mission. I ponder that in the original expectation to be attacking ships/convoy at sea meant being generally boated by the mother sub thus needing only minor corrections. The rudder matches that mission profile. Sending it into harbor attacks does now seem a "bonus difficulty" mission for it.

    There is an Ariel view of the ships during the attack which clearly shows a torpedo trail heading for Battleship Row

    Yes they knew. That's why our carriers were northeast of peril to keep them safe .

    The subs came long before the Arial attack. This, again, shows that an attack was coming from sea born vessels, and yet orders were not sent to depart to meet the enemy that had sent to turtles. Why no ships sent out to attack the attackers ships?

    If the lt boat had fired would not the torpedo covers have been gone? Did the buryed sub still have its covers?

      I think one of the things being suggested that if a boat got in was there others? Others that might have fired the torpedo then the midget sub sunk in unknown places. Either in the harbor or out in the deep sea. I could see for the IJN planning to have the sailors die onboard to hide that they were there >OR< that faults/damages caused the minisub to start taking on water and it sank before recovery.

      @@b1laxson History speaks of more turtles, which begs the question as to why was not the navy sent out to engage in battle with those who sent the turtles?

    to much repartition, try rewording the whole lecture. At a guess you said about 5 sentences, you just said them a lot of times! Pity it could have been an interesting talk!

    • @dougaldouglas8842
      @dougaldouglas8842 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, could have done better, far better. I often wonder why the navy stayed in harbour, when orders should have been given to go out and deal with the enemy that the turtles came from?

      Thats not only an unfair statement, it’s not at all true. The man is a former high ranking USN officer, not some polished TH-cam explainer regurgitating Wikipedia. He’s gruff at worst, which makes the talk semi interesting to hear his take on it.
