  • For over 60 years one of the great Australian wartime and maritime mysteries was the whereabouts of the third and last Japanese midget submarine, which attacked Sydney Harbour on 31 May 1942.
Discovered in November 2006 off Bungan Head, Newport by "No Frills Divers" it was immediately identified to be of national heritage significance and was listed as a protected Historic Shipwreck and placed on the NSW State Heritage Register. The M24 is seen as a unique heritage site internationally, representing one of only a handful of such submarine wreck sites located worldwide and in its original battle context.
Join presenter Stirling Smith, Maritime Archaeologist Officer at Heritage NSW (Department of Premier and Cabinet), as he examines the historical background of the M24 and the management strategies that have been developed for this highly significant maritime archaeological site, as well as some of the future management issues the site will face.
