No.3746 is a special submarine in the fact it's the only surviving example of it's type. Today we look at its background and service history. Enjoy the video.
300 m of diving depth? I hope this is not a mix-up between feet and meters, assuming it is not, this is impressive for a Japanese non-military project at the time.
While crabbing in the Bering sea in the 90s we ran a skiff over to the beach on Kiska and explored the area and crawled around the destroyed Japanese midget sub there. Was cool. Found some interesting war junk and splinters/shrapnel.
What a lovely and neat looking sub..Amazing tiny sub..I liked that photo of sub No.2 in the harbor with a crewman looking from the main hatch..That would make a great model diorama..(forgive the modeling dream)..🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
300 Meters to 400 Meters...THAT is impressive. And when you think about THAT fact...why would you make a throw away sub capable of THAT KIND OF DEPTH ? Especially as there is no torpedo tube.

@@Psychol-Snooper cast steel is real (ex.Used in tanks like the M4A1) but I didn't mean to imply that the sub is cast steel, but rather just steel. The hull is not cast, rather individual plates welded together with a few components being bolted on. Now I'm not yet certain as to what form of steel was used, but I believe it is standard hardened steel due to it's rough texture, however it could possibly be ducol steel(?), DS was common in the IJN at the time, but welding it was, for the lack of words, unstable. DS was used in large amounts on the Mogami class and they were welded which proved to cause several problems after they were commissioned. Based off that, I doubt they would weld a submersible vessel out of this material, but not impossible.
@@centralcrossing4732 The reason I asked was the vessel appears to have foundry/casting marks. If not for the patches of rust I'd have guessed it might be die cast aluminum. And you are right... right after my last reply I started thinking about cast tank turrets from WW2. XD thx
Yeah, the depths for all 4 of these subs is highly suspicious. Since I made this video, I've read that the IJN did not trust the depth rating for the subs and labeled a safety depth of 100 meters for No.3746-3747. seeing that 3746 participated in operations around I-63 and Mutsu, this 100 meters rating seems to have been met, but no evidence of ever going further other than theoretical numbers for pink coral.

It's not a mix up, No.1 was 300 meters, No.2 was 350 meters, and No.3746 and 3747 was 400 meters.

I find it interesting that following the destruction of battleships in port, the Americans used divers whereas the IJN used submarines.
