Just received the game today. This is my first Gundam game and i really like it, the arcade lineage is what caught my attention. The battle system is deep and fun to learn. I played Virtua-On years ago and loved the arena battles. This game brings the arena battles with good controls and mechanics. The Asia physical has full English text which is nice. The amount of playable Gundams is quite intimidating, hours of fun to be had just going through the roster.

Not exactly all. The Hidolfr is a mobile tank, docked suits are Mobile weapons, and most bosses(and transformed forms) are Mobile Armors.

This games is alot of fun a must have for die hard Gundam fans, it has so many customizeable aspects to it as well which is great. Even down to the music.

Great review, this helped me find out that this isn't the game for me. I love the Gundam franchise but have not been impressed with many of the western releases in the last 10 years. I miss the old games that had some sort of story element to it. Whether it is the retelling of one of the series stories or an amalgamation of several game stories like the dynasty warriors gundam games. These gunpla battlers and arena-based games just don't do it for me.
My man chose a Gundam with a very high mastery ceiling. The highest level player in japan has a mode of concentration on this suit where he calls it "I have no idea what I am doing" that's how hard this suit is to master, or rather have any sort of efficiency at all.
What makes it hard?
@@dgayle2348 MANY Cancel routes to remember and know when to use them, need to know how to use your only melee attack(the forward kick)(mainly used to rainbow step to shoot facing forward, the well seasoned japanese player mashes buttons so quickly its impossible to follow with an untrained eye.

Does this game have an offline versus mode like Gundam Versus had where you could 2v2 cpu's and change the amount of power level available to be spent?
Yes they have.
And in addition with that mbon also have split screen play in which you can play with 2 player in one console.
And the best part of mbon is, you could have lan party to play 2 vs 2 with friend offline

Maaan Gundam Extream VS got me hooked on the Force battle mechanic. Really balanced out the port with full scale open maps with Ace and grunts coming at you,capturing control points and Warship attacks. All on a portable PS Vita your telling me they couldn't put one mission in like that and made it multi player? Btw Gundam vs Zeta Gundam on the ps2 was the Greatest Gundam game released just poorly marketed unlike Maxiboost thx to f2p GBO2.
The old school PS2 Gundam games were my favorites. I loved Fed vs Zeon and Gundam vs Zeta. I also loved Zeonic Front. I miss those old school Gundam games.

There is 1v1 but is not balanced for it as its not meant to be played 1v1.
All characters are unlocked at start excluding Barbatos Lupus Rex who is only available from Pre Ordering the game or buying it as dlc. There is no grind unless you wanna unlock titles, gauge designs, or Navis

Its the final version of Maxiboost, the title that came after Full boost on ps3
You have 185 characters at the start. Each play different, so you can spend quite a bit of time experimenting.
First is branch battle, an arcade mode, here you pick 1 of 5 starting battles of various difficulties. Upon completing that battle you can branch off into other routes or continue on the one you started up till the 8th battle you'll fight a boss. Do good enough and you'll play bonus battles or even a more challenging final boss at the end. In addition, you may unlock EX battles you can attempt in your next run but these are much harder. You can play branch battle with local splitscreen co op.
Second is free battle, where you can try out mobile suits or play a battle with a change of rules and battle cpu. You can do splitscreen local VS or Co op in free battle. In addition, if you have time to waste you can look for unique quotes by pairing or VS various mobile suits. There are cross series quotes and some pilots from different series have conversations like Duo (Deathscythe Hell, Gundam Wing) and Shiro (Ez8, 08th MS Team)
Third is Maxi boost missions. There are about 250+ missions with various win conditions that progressively get harder. In this mode only, you can upgrade your mobile suit or cpu teammate with various effects that you can unlock through missions such as defense up, more hp, or DeathBlow (everything dies in 1 hit, including yourself). The missions are set up in 'zones' where each zone has a set amount of missions before you face a massive boss to move on to the next area. You don't need to do all the missions in an area to face the boss, you'll just need to look for the path to it. Occasionally you'll find Break battles, winning these will make the boss of the area weaker and more easier to beat than rushing straight for it.
Other than that there are quite a bit of emblems, gauge designs, Navigators, Pilot outfits, and Titles to unlock
Zaku type 2 is my favourite mobile suit.

I whised they had more build fighter and diver units and not just the 3 with 2 of them coming from the rival characters
I'm hesitant about getting it after being disappointed with Gundam Versus. Mostly because of the best suits being dlc. Are there any dlc purchases in this game?
As long it starts with 180 rooster from every series i think u dont need to buy dlc to enjoy the game sir.
There might be dlc however, since there might be new suits from the arcade counterpart.
This is not gundam versus it is an updated version of gundam extreme versus full boost which is way better and so far there is no dlc everything is available and unlocked

I got this on release. It's EXVSFB but even better. That makes it a greats game. I do agree though. Not the most new player friendly
it kinda is, it just looks intimidating at first. there are more advanced techniques like combos, and the timing of the dash, but those are much easier to grasp as you continue to play.
Is there an easier mode that helps you learn? I remember playing one of these games in an arcade in Japan a decade ago and I had no idea what was going on and died in like 30 seconds.

It does have lan and local co-op modes for players
The lan requires 4 ps4 consoles/screens. 2 player Splitscreen is only for free battle and branch battle (both local only). If you and your friend have a good grasp on directing your AI partner, you can still have a pseudo 2v2 splitscreen if 1v1 isn't your thing.

ranking is a big deal in MBON but they can sometimes be misleading ;)
Also, this game may not be newcomer friendly, but this should at least be a gateway for newcomers to get into the franchise.
And for the game itself, its mechanics can be rivaled with games like MVC and Tekken. MBON needs more love!

I just purchased this game and its my first gundam game but grew up on the anime, are the gundams automatically accessible? Or do tou have to earn them.

I don't understand why you can't play free mode online? People just want to mess around with the game with their friends. Also you don't always have 4 people to play with. The more options the better. I don't care about balancing I just want to have fun.
I may check this out after a steep sale. I prefer more single player focused Gundam games. This looks better than New Gundam Breaker at least.
Though i Wish Namco would team with Koei again for a new DW Gundam.

There is a free play mode where you can set battles to 1v1, 1v2 or 2v2, i played that mode for my first session and really enjoyed it, its offline AI unless you do local splitscreen. Its a great game and worth picking up.
the game is an arena fighting game, but more than that, its THE arena fighting game. this is nothing like gundam breaker, if anything, think of it like a much more varied and competitive version of virtua on.

Well it goes by what you choose. There’s a lot, but you aren’t required to do all of them. It’s kinda like you choose your own path.
From what I played so far and the acheivments available, it almost looks like from A to Z with a huge plethora of missions within each letter. I don't see myself running out of content to play anytime soon.

it LOOKS like VS because versus was in the same series as this, the gundam versus series. but its mechanically diferent, maxiboost is the remaster/fullest pack) of the ps3 game gundam extreme vs. versus, was a redesign of extreme vs, that tried to make it more "begginer friendly" and endded up screwing the gameplay flow.

Sorry, this game to me is both very good and very bad.
1: The dualshock control scheme sucks. Charging attacks is very uncomfortable.
Moving and dashing on a controller really cramps my hands. Customizing doesn't really help much. Get an arcade stick. You're gonna get destroyed by try hards without one.
2: The playerbase here in the west mostly focuses on heavy ganks for the sake of winning. A lot of losing streaks will come from whether not you can stop a heavy gank. It can be a frustrating experience.
3: Lack of balance in the roster. When you play online, you'll notice that players pick mostly the best mobile suits. So if you have a mobile suit you enjoy using, you might get overwhelmed, or straight up confused. Casuals beware.
4: Ranked players play with casuals, which can lead to many one sided fights.
It's an ongoing issue. *Majors, Colonels, Generals, Captains and Lieutenants* destroying casuals by the streaks.
Rank matters. Ppl just don't get that far by not caring.
Other than that, the single player stuff is very fun. Mutliplayer isn't friendly at all.
It's very hit and miss, leading to rage quits and match connection issues.

Ima add my opinion on this
1. You don't need an arcade stick to play, as I myself use the default just with R1 switched to none and L1 as Sub ranged. I can keep my own against others and even get streaks. So this varies from person to person
2. Not surprising from the West audience happens with just about every game that comes overseas.
3. There has been balance as we got the final version/patch from the arcade. The best mobile suit I haven't seen online near at all, so it may just people picking their favorite suit. You just need to know your suit well to deal with high costs or those you see frequently. Heck I use an apparently low tier suit against everything higher than it and I manage well enough.
4. Yeah that happens in ranked. Casuals should play in player matches its easier to filter out ranked players or wait till some patch comes along to fix matchmaking in both ranked and casual online, but I highly recommend casuals to go to player match as its much easier to get a few matches within the same skill level.

This is the greatest video game on Planet Earth, provided you’re into fighting games.
The adrenanline rush you get from playing online is undeniable.
It took me some time playing around with my favorite in single player to learn it's neutral game well enough. It's very much geared toward the fighting game/dark souls crowd (the boost system in this game is akin to a stamina system).

The game is fun for me primarily offline. But online its atrocious, the mobile suits are extremely unbalanced and the point system is pretty lame. I don't see how people can play this game competitively unless every one selects the same type of MS. Thats really my major gripe with this game, other than that its fun to a degree. Would like to see a mainline Gundam game, more story focussed though.
Its not unbalanced, thats where the point system comes in. The point system is needed as its another factor to balancing and strategic planning (causing overcost as an example). Online is definitely where you will see veterans with years of experience so its not a great place for newcomers, you'll get punished pretty hard if you dont at least know a few advanced movements and basics. If you are a newcomer don't expect to win online so quickly after starting, as the reviewer said its not very newcomer friendly as the game itself never tells you anything advanced or any of the indepth mechanics that everyone uses online which may make it seem like its unbalanced.
Suits are actually pretty balanced in the grand scheme of things.

That ain't the case here. This is the Gundam Extreme Versus title. Versus is just a wannabe since MBON came first. It's actually technical if you delve deep into it. Don't assume on how it looks until you play it. I suggest checking on the GundamExVs reddit page.
