    Great video JT. I grew up in Ashland. The track closest to the river was from Armco going from the main mill up to the foundry at 23rd St. The next ripped up track used to be the west bound main, the next in service track was the yard lead for the Ashland yard and the 4th track was the East bound main. When I was in high school the main lines went around the yard on both sides. Then Chessie changed the track around and made the two closest tracks to the floodwall the main lines. Before that you had the yard lead also split and go around the yard on both sides so trains could pull up to exchange cars in the yard east or west bound without blocking the mains. There was a yard tower at 34th St that I used to ride my bike to and watch the GP9s switching the yard. Once, one of the yard crews asked if I'd like to ride. Of course I said yes. After I got on we came down river to the end of the yard by downtown. There they let me run the engine for about an hour. We were out of sight from the tower.The track through Ashland was basically triple track from Big Sandy Junction to Russell Yard at that time.

    You got some great trains here JT. I counted 239 cars on the 1st coal train, as did a couple others. On the 3rd train, outside Ashland, exactly half way into the train, 61 cars, is a grainer that your old buddy, Hobo Shoestring, would call "a full Cadillac ride". Don't see a lot of them. Thanks for a great video.

    The jagged piles of ties and rails are almost like a final salute to the passing trains on the mainline. You can tell winter isn't far away with the high number of propane tank cars out there. Apparently the second CSX coal train is headed to a dumper where they will be uncoupled because the colored ends aren't matching up for rotary tipping. The NS train with the UP unit was certainly testing the old bridge steel with all the loads of new steel. Plenty of older Freight cars as well as railroads and companies no longer around. It appears Loki was staring at the goats pondering if it should conduct a roundup of them but then thought Ahhh it's too much like work. Thanks for today's railroad action Roundup.

    974 axles on that first coal train means there were 239 coal gondola cars on the train. 974 minus 18 acles for the three locomotives means 956 gondola car axles. When you divide the 956 axles by four axles per car, you end up with 239 gondola cars. This was a very loong train. The cars on this train appeared to me to be empty because I did not see any coal peeking up over the sides of the gondolas. The loaded CSX coal train in Kenova, West Virginia was also a long train. I enjoyed watching this video of the trains that you caught at Ashland, Kentucky and Kenova, West Virginia, Jaw Tooth!

    Speaking of coal trains one really hot summer day, a coal train on the way into Salina Ks. I guess the rail had gotten so hot that it couldn't handle the weight, and the train derailed. I cannot remember how many cars toppled over, but it was a big mess. UP runs coal trains through this area to a power plant near Topeka.

  • @Denis-tu1pd
    @Denis-tu1pd ปีที่แล้ว +1

    50 years I was 12 they shut down the rail. Before that we had 350 cars on a train average. 5 years ago they put down cement ties and welded rail .it is a commute train and at night they run short freight trains.
