  • XR557 fails behind XR552, half way up Warrenheip bank. After several attempts to start it, the train is reversed back into Ballarat station. Later the locos are detached and sent over to Ballarat East loco where a mobile mechanic crew looked at XR557. Further unable to start XR557 the locos where latched back onto the train and XR553 and XR550 were sent down to rescue the train.

    No it's not.
The steepest bank in Victorian Railways (in current use) is Jordanville on the Glen Waverley Line.
Jordanville is 1 in 30 where as Warrenheip is only 1 in 52
some parts of the Cudgewa Line were 1 in 28!

SharkytheGunzel. The Jordanville hill is suburban electric although the old steamers with only light carriages and trucks used it from 1933 to 1960s.
Steamrail does the occasional run up it.
The goods runs up Warrenheip are much tougher on the locos than the Holmesglen Jordanville section.

Not the first PN loco to fail on the bank and it sure will not be the last

PN nearly stalled here again a week or two ago ...around 5.30 am.....the track was wet. They were going slower than walking pace. One of the crew got out and put what I thought was ballast on the track out in front to keep her going.

I spotted grain hoppers on the hill, got up to the top and waited a while and realised it wasn't coming so went back down and found the drivers trying to start up the failed loco...

One XR (3300hp) no hope without its counterpart. Still only 12 - 13 years old fairly new trains. That's why some trains have a third loco usually an X which may have gotten her to the top

The train was reversed back into Ballarat station. Later the locos are detached and sent over to Ballarat East yard where a mobile mechanic crew looked at XR557. Further unable to start XR557 the locos where latched back onto the train and XR553 and XR550 were sent down to rescue the train.

Its good to see Elzorro is not the only one that gets it wrong. With all the spare Tclasses sitting in Nth Geelong maybe a couple in Ballarat as a banker wouldnt go astray.Cheers Neil

Is it in 1st notch on the way down, with dynamic braking or are the brakes applied due to the sheer weight of the haul going downhill?

  • @robertgift
    @robertgift 12 ปีที่แล้ว

Surprised that just one engine out was enough to defeat the climb. I expected it to be slower but not stopped.
No other engines mid train or at the back? (Or is this before railroads started doing that?)
    Cause of failure? Fuel pump?
    Thank you.

Now was this a multi-grain unit? Multi-grain very very healthy for the super super people now......single grain only marginally healthy for the people now.......not enough grains for........need those multi.......needs those multi multi-grains.......must have the multi-grain trains bringing the grain to the super super people now.

tres belle video mais je trouve que l'initiative du mechaniciens de tenter de d'avancer avec une seul loco est idiot car le tonnage est trop important.! et de surcroit en monte.
