The TH-cam Channel Special_Effect has the full broadway musical uploaded (free) if you ever want to see the original script over this Disney version. I would love to watch the reaction if you were willing to find the time do one.
The music director for this movie actually put On the Steps of the Palace in a higher key cause he wanted use Anna Kendrick’s range. I agree with his decision.
My favourite line in the movie is Prince Charming saying "I was raised to be charming, not sincere" makes me chuckle every time
The original broadway cast of Into the Woods has a video of the production with Bernadette Peters as the witch! It is an excellent version, much better chemistry between the baker and the baker's wife, and songs that were not included in the movie. Maybe a future watch party (or at least vocal analysis)!
I absolutely love Bernadette Peters
That's how I learned about this musical and how it' became one of my favorites. Bernadette Peters is amazing in it and so is the rest of the cast.
That's my favorite version
It’s amazing, I rewatch it on occasion.
Fully agree ❤
The actor who played Jack also played Gavroche in the film of Les mis. He’s an amazing talent.
I thought he was Gavroche!
He was brilliant in Les Mis! I was pretty meh on that movie in general but he was a standout
My favorite song in the entire production is "No One Is Alone". Anna Kendrick's voice is amazing.
My favorite is, "I need that shoe to have a baby." "...that makes no sense!" 😂
Agony is great. I never knew Chris Pine could sing until that moment!
He went full Shatner and it was glorious.
I didn’t know anything about this musical prior to seeing this movie & I had never laughed so hard til I saw the Agony song performed in this movie. It was so perfectly goofy & dramatized & they did an amazing job on it.
That song made me laugh the first time I heard it. I know it's not supposed to be comedic, but I couldn't help it.
@@Rainbow.Pegacorn.Cosplay with the way they did it, you are absolutely supposed to laugh
It’s always comedic. In the stage version, there’s a reprise of Agony in the second act which is even funnier. It’s not in the movie. The movie suffers from the changes that were made to the book.
"She is so ugly looking, but so sexy at the same time!" That's EXACTLY how I feel about Meryl in this movie! And Helena Bonham Carter in Harry Potter xD
But there's no way Helena can get ugly. Even in her most normal looking character that I know (Charlie's mom from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), she is still so beautiful!
Bro I can’t relate to this cos they’re both just hella hot to me
YES SAME FEELING ABOUT HBC AS BELLATRIX AAAAAAHHH
Do not miss the play! Bernadette Peters as the witch is everything!
5:44 Johnny depp made another musical, sweeney todd (directed by Tim Burton)... an amazing musical with great and unexpected voices... and it's also by stephen sondheim just like into the woods. Apart from that Johnny, before being an actor he was a guitarist and has a band with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry....but he doesn't have a background in theatre 😬😅
He was also in Cry Baby which was a musical film in the early 90s
Cry Baby was good from what I remember but it wasn't actually Johnny Depp singing in that one. He had a voice double. Sweeney Todd is 😙👌
@@cael_ajYes, it´s sad that he was overdubbed in the singing parts, because his actual singing voice is so good! I´m so glad that Tim Burton forced him to sing in Sweeney Todd 😂
Meryl is amazing! There is a reason why she was nominated for an Oscar for this role. I got to see the 2002 revival on B’way with Vanessa Williams and again a tremendous performance. Nominated for the Tony and of course Bernadette set the bar for perfection. This is one of my ALL fave Sondheim projects. Thank you for the reaction! Loved it.
Agony is the reason I knew Chris Pine would be a PERFECT bard in D&D!
And yet, his singing wasn't used as much as it should have.
Emily blunt played Mary poppins in Mary poppins Returns, you really should react to this movie, her voice is incredible (and there's Lin Manuel Miranda in it !) 🤩
Anna Kendrick was on the Graham Norton Show and described it as this is what happens after Happily Ever After because life gets real and dark and her Prince cheats "because he's a tool", LOL. That's the beauty and genius of music from Stephen Sondheim. He was a true master and anyone singing his music has to work at it. Chris Pine sings a duet with Barbra Streisand on her Encore: Movie Partners album. VERY Rat Pack-esque. It's one of my favorites from that album. You should check out those video clips because she sings with Anne Hathaway and Daisy Ridley for At The Ballet, Antonio Banderas, Patrick Wilson, Melissa McCarthy, Alec Baldwin, Seth McFarlane, Jamie Foxx, Hugh Jackman and the late Anthony Newley in a digital duet.
I lovd that you appreciated the voice of Cinderella's Mother in the tree. It was sung by Joanna Riding, who has played many leading roles in London's West End.
If you want to hear more of Emily Blunt singing you should watch Mary Poppins Returns. The best production I’ve seen of Into The Woods is the Open Air Theatre production which can be seen on Broadway HD.
Open Air....as in Donna Murphy and Amy Adams?
No, as in Hannah Waddingham, Jenna Russell, Michael Xavier etc. Filmed at London’s Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park.
@@gaviny7560i thought u meant central park prod
It was probably based on the London production but it’s the London production that’s on Broadway HD.
@@gaviny7560 thanks to youtube, it does look like the same production and with a quick google Regent came first. Both STELLAR casts
The kid who plays Jack also played Gavroche in the 2012 Les Miserables with Hugh Jackman.
Wasn't he also in Sweeney Todd?
He might be Toby from Sweeney Todd.
-Jack (Gavroche in Les Miz movie)
- little red (Annie in 2012 broadway revival)
- rapunzel (bold & the beautiful)
-step mum (mamma mia, good wife/fight, big bang theory)
The kid who played Jack was also Gavroche in the film version of Les Mis, a role he also played in the West End production.
anna kendrick is such an amazing singer
In the original cast recording, the giants are both represented only by their voice, sound and the actors looking up. That's it. 😊
this movie is so amazing no matter how different it is from the original musical
If you think Meryl Streep did good, you MUST hear Heather Headley sing Stay With Me. It’s breathtaking. This musical has a place in my heart, because we did bits of it in high school, so I associate the songs with old friends. I really like this movie and the metaphors in the song. “I was raised to be charming, not sincere” is one of my favorite movie lines ever spoken. And this cast is incredible
I have a long history with this musical. My High School performed this in the early 90's, I worked tech for it. The actress who played Little Red Ridinghood starred as Annie in the production that Jane Lynch played Miss hannigan in. The original Broadway production with the original cast is available to see. It was recorded to be shown on PBS in the 80's.
I had to perform “Giants in the Sky” in college. Red and Jack’s stories are supposed to about sexual awakenings. The wolf’s original costume had exposed prosthetic genitals. The kids in the movie were good, but it was weird having actual kids play those parts knowing what the stories are supposed to be about.
Yeah, they're usually played by young adults portraying teenagers.
As much as I love most of the musical, Red's song about the wolf always gives me the ick. Like, even if they meant for it to be played by an adult, she's written so childishly. My friend (who first showed me this musical) and others have said they're supposed to be older than they were in the movie, but I think they cast based on how they were actually written, like children. Maybe thirteen at the *oldest* (which I think the kids in the movie could pass for).
I didn't know Giants In The Sky was supposed to be about a sexual awakening- I thought it was a religious allegory?
1:38 "What is she from?" This is the second time Lucy Punch has played Cindetella's evil step sister, first time was in Ella Enchanted (musical). She was also Sally Peep in The 10th Kingdom.
I love you know The 10th Kingdom!!!
@tonialston1968 huff puff! Ive loved it ever since it first aired! I even dressed up as (T10K's) Snow White this past halloween!
@miacooke718 I had such a crush on the wolf! Loved the show, wish it wasn't a miniseries. That's why I was so happy when Once Upon a Time came out because it had a similar feel, but I never finished watching all the seasons
@tonialston1968 me too! I'm still hoping that they'll make a sequel (cast, crew, & fans have been fighting for one to be made). A lot of people I've seen want Milo Manheim (Camryn's son) to play Wolf & Verginia's son in a sequel, I just saw him in a film, and I agree!
She will always be Sally Peep to me! I love The 10th Kingdom!
Love love love Emily Blunt, she's absolutely fantastic. She played mary poppins in mary poppins returns ❤
Love how we all side eye whenever james cordon is in anything lol 😂
If I'm remembering my theatre classes correctly, Little Red is usually meant to be played by an older teen or young adult. So, the dynamic between her and the Wolf is supposed to sound sexual and be creepy/stalkery (and yes make it sound like the double entendre suggests). Granted, the fact they cast an actual child as Little Red makes it even worse and pedo...
That’s always been the goal tho
yes, the original story of little red she is SA by the wolf. so the creepy stalker sexual tones in the song makes sens3
Even if she's supposed to be played by an older actor in the theatre, she's clearly written as a child. Maybe thirteen (though I think younger).
Jack (of the beanstalk) is the kid that played Gavroche in the film version of Les Mis with Hugh Jackman
Please listen to the 2022 Broadway soundtrack for Into The WOODS the performers sing so well
lmao fucking christine baranski being in mamma mia and hearing "Shes not in musicals" i died.
Lmao right?? And she watched both of those
I think she was referring to Lucy Punch not Christine Baranski
I was Cinderella in a production of Into the Woods and I had an asthma attack the first time I sang “Your Fault” 😂
This is delightful, but please seek out the original stage recording with Bernadette Peters. Even if you don't watch it for the channel, that version is amazing. It's slightly different than the film adaptation. You get more of the nuances of the messages.
1:40 Ella Enchanted. She played a stepsister, which is surprisingly fitting she's playing one again here
So funny story from an interview. The guy who plays Cinderella's Prince was telling a story about when they had to show some big wigs something of what they were doing. He had to follow the witch (singing "stay with me") with "agony". He said how do you follow meryl streep?
Also, Sondheim's story here is based on the Grimm Brother's Fairytales. Those are incredibly dark. Mostly, they are tales of warning. That's why little red riding hood is so creepy here. It's about what it felt like and the dangers of young girls finding themselves in situations with men. I'm not explaining it properly. But you can look it up if you are interested.
One of the saddest things to me with this rendition is that they didn't include the Agony reprise. It's hysterical.
I love Sondheim's lyrics. They are so intelligent.
I would love to see your reaction to the recording of the original cast of Into the Woods on stage (filmed in 1989, but broadcast in 1991).
I'd love to see your reaction to the filmed version of the Broadway production
The guy from Aladdin, is Billy Magnussen. He’s very known him since 2010. He’s so nice. He has a Tony nomination for a play and he used to have a band and was on the soap opera As The World Turns, which is where I know him from.
When I studied at UC Santa Cruz, they did a production of it as a walk-through in the fire trails of the woods above campus, where various members of the cast were positioned in different areas, and the narrator was a Park Ranger...
There are lots of way to do the death of the lady giant. The easist is to just have it occur off stage, the lines of the actors and their reactions do a good job of telling us what happens. When we did it, we used our shortest actress, who also played Red's mother, with a bright light shining on her, so her shadow was seen fighting off the birds. With the right placement of light and actor, we had a giant who filled the stage.
5:27 The story of Little Red Riding Hood is supposed to be a bit sexual as it's a cautionary tale -- it's only so creepy here because the actress is so young. Still works great as the Wolf is supposed to be a predator in all senses of the word. Personally, I was a bit freaked out by how young Jack was portrayed in this version considering his lyrics about the giant's wife!
16:16 Wishing they were nicer to her and that they hadn't maimed themselves.
It was fun listening to your reactions this musical as it is one of my favorites musically from a technical standpoint as well as being just a great story: it's so complex and so beautiful! I also really enjoyed listening to your analysis of what the vocalists were doing.
Have you watched Mary Poppins Returns with Lin Manuel Miranda, Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep... I love the songs.
If you want more if Meryl Streep, check out Mama Mia! If you want more of Emily Blunt, checkout Mary Poppins Returns!
The original stage production is brilliant. I definitely recommend it. :)
Interesting how you said the wolf sounded sexual. If you look at the history of the original fairy tale, it was essentially a cautionary tale saying, "Oi, men, keep your hands off our daughters."
You need to watch the stage production because there is SOOOO MUCH this film removes, so much more contest that is taken, and the stakes are higher in that version. Plus they lost some of the best songs, and one of the best characters got cut from the film.
The girl who played red riding hood is a broadway kid who played in the annie musical with sadie sink
In addition to the filmed version of the original Broadway production* there is another filmed version that is a must-see for fans.
It was produced by Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in the UK. It is a creative, spirited version …. It transferred to NYC’s Shakespeare in The Park (thus running in Central Park).
* IMO the recorded Broadway production is the quintessential version when it comes to showing off the humorous side of the show.
There are several theater productions on TH-cam, including from the Original Broadway cast and some high schools. It’s truly amazing and I’m so glad you watched this musical because it’s one of my personal favourites
I'm doing Into the Woods rn, and the girl who is playing Jack, she was singing Giants in the Sky, and after she sang it, her face was red, like RED
I've only seen the stage show once, but I'm pretty sure act one ends at the royal wedding right before the giant's wife shows up. So it seems like the story is over and everyone lived happily ever after but it's only intermission so you're left wondering what's going to happen next.
Meryl’s emotion is EVERYTHING
Many people will know Chris Pine as captain of the Enterprise in Star Trek
It’s literally the most perfect cast I’ve ever seen
As much as it's stupid to hear everyone play the blame game, it's my favorite song in the movie. It's such a fast pace and we get each of the personalities and it basically rounds everything that they were so related to each other even if they didn't all know it.
A related thing you can check out is Meryl, Christine, and Tracey Ullman (Jack’s mom) performing a parody of some of the songs live at the 2015 Artios Awards in honor of Rob Marshall who directed the movie!
The actress that is the baker's wife played Mary Poppins in "Marry Poppins Returns" it's a good movie to react
1:31 Lilla Crawford! I remember watching a snippet of her as Annie during one of its Broadway revivals on tv and her voice is incredible!
You need to watch the Broadway pro shot. It's so much better
Lila Crawford (Red) played Annie in a Broadway revival a few years prior to this role.
in the original the wolf was a reference to sexual predators its a warning thing so they captured that at least in the movie the wolfs costume doesnt have a ding dong
I adore Agony. It was the first song I ever listen from this musical.
So i just auditioned for this show on sunday so this seemed like a must watch. ❤
Emily Blunt has also played Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns
I love this, but im honestly just here to ask for more starkid reactions.
Okay this is fun!!! I hope we can get a Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert hall reaction soon?? It's back on TH-cam and everything as well!!
I remember watching the musical in high school. If i remember correctly there was a lot more chaos than what was in the movie. Im not sure if i remember correctly but i think cinderella ended up with the baker, cinderellas prince ended up with Aurora, and Rapunzels prince ended up with snow white. (Could be wrong)
I just remember there being a reprise to "Agony" and it was hilarious 😂
you NEED to see the broadway version.. they took out the ACTUAL narrator In the movie an that missing storyline is EVERYTHING... they took out the HEART in the movie
In my school theres a play in 3 days it's based on this movie and I have to do Cinderella so before every rehearsal I eat ice it like prepares my vocal chords for the high notes and I just managed to do the 'Of the place!!~' Today! Once you get the hang of it it's not that hard but I can hardly talk😭I did like just do it 50min ago.
I hope you're able to check out the original broadway stage production online. Into the Woods was originally written as a comedic parody of fairytales/the disney formula but the movie decided to play so many of the jokes straight that it seems like a completely different musical at times
I don’t know if anyone has said anything, but I know that the one stepsister that you asked about (the one who said good luck) is a stepsister in Anne Hathaway’s Ella Enchanted
A lot of people are recommending the original Broadway version. I'm going to take a completely different approach and recommend the 2010 Regent's Park version. As far as I know, it's the only proshot of the show other than the Broadway one. This version was played in an open air theatre, giving it a huge extra layer of atmosphere not seen in any other version, and the cast, in my opinion, does the best job out of every Into the Woods cast. Additionally, they added a new framing device to the story that adds a huge extra layer of depth to the central themes and messaging.
THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THIS MOVIE!!! I've been waiting for this lol thank you so much!!!
You're gonna need to watch the stage version now. It is...just much more consistent and the funny moments are funnier but in contrast the emotional moments hit harder.
Please react to Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). Johnny Depp was nominated for an Oscar for this movie.
My favourite song is near the end when Emily’s character sings lost in the woods
I absolutely adore this movie.
Sara bareilles played the baker's wife in the recent Broadway cast she also had the cast record an album with her and she released it as the official cast recording because Stephen Sondheim is no longer with us I highly recommend listening to that cast recording it is phenomenal
That recording received a Grammy and the Bakers wife (Sara Barrilles) , the Baker and Little Red all received Tony nods.
the kid that plays jack played gavroche in the les mis movie
I have no idea that Chris Pine can sing 😂and this person is a best vocal coach ❤
love the idea that if you get what you wish for, watch out
I did this musical in summer and it was so cool with ensamble because it was laryed so much.
anna kendrick is just perfect imo
So you haven’t seen The absolute masterpiece that’s is Mamma Mia?? 😵😵
You NEED/MUST watch the live stage production with Bernadette Peters as the witch. It's free on TH-cam and soooooooo goooooood you would LOVE the vocals
today I had a thought that this would make the greatest drag musical ever
emily blunt is so good in in mary poppins returns as well
fav movie thanks for watching!
I love this movie & Sondheim !!
Love the movie but it's missing a crucial thing between happily ever after and things going south- a time jump where everyone is wishing again. THAT's what makes that second half really work.
One minute and 30 seconds in and you already have me cry-laughing.
"From the Jim Carrey christmas movie, whatever that was called." Um, you mean The Grinch??
LOL, you're funny
If you can find a clip of it, you have to watch Emily Blunt singing ‘Papa’ from Gideon’s Daughter….amazing vocals and so emotional.
The step-sisters cutting parts of their feet off is straight out of the ORIGINAL story of Cinderella.
If you didn't know that Emily Blunt could sing... how would you like to see Mary Poppins Returns? She sings a lot in that if you're interested.
adding my vote for you to watch the video of the Original Broadway Cast. SO SO SO SO GOOD.
I love this movie
The movie is good, Rob Marshall always makes a good product, but they really cut the second act. They made it happier believe it or not.
In the original stage play it's heavily implied that most of the cast died because of their choices with only Little Red Ridding Hood, Jack, Cinderella, the Baker surviving (with possibly the princes a well).
I get why to a degree since I'm sure Disney wouldn't want one of their princesses dying (Rapunzel) but I think the second act is by far the more interesting and it is a little sad they cut half of it.
It’s funny because I just watched into the wood yesterday!
The man that plays rapunzels prince playes one of the princes that wants to marry Jasmine in the new aladdin movie.
The step sister is also the step sister from Ella Enchanted
“I know he’s supposed to eat her,, but this seems veeery sexual” in the Freud analysis of this fairytale it IS sexual. It’s in that the wolf is a metaphor for a pedophile or smth. (Haven’t actually read it but my sisters school taught her about it)
The step sisters are the step sisters from Ella Enchanted!
