AGONNYYYYYYY
I agree
Please do amphibia and Hilda series out of context videos 🙏💙💚❤️💜
ah I love this song SO much!!
MATTHEW THEY ARE BROTHERS.
You should React to Pattycake Productions the Villians lair
"you're not good, you're not bad, you're just _nice"_ is the most savage burn ever and no one can convince me otherwise
Ahem...
"You are the worst kind of good; cuz you're not even great"
Is a contender, tho
I came here to say this 😂 Poseidon had no mercy@@leadingblind1629
@@leadingblind1629 a winion over here lol
And the following “I’m not good, I’m not nice, I’m just right! I’m the witch! You’re the world!” Just goes crazy hard
@@leadingblind1629epic reference!!
The princes are brothers😂 that’s why they’re so competitive but still like compliment each other while bickering
OMG the shipping during Agony without the context that the Prince Charmings are brothers 😂
Is no one gonna talk about the fact that Mathew was talking about how the BROTHERS have underlying sexual tension without realising it?😭
Sweet home Alabama
😂😂😂
Hey jealousy sometimes comes from sexual desire
Ngl, despite seeing the movie before, i forgot that they are brothers and fully agreed they looked like they were about to kiss
Fr!!!
1. The princes are brothers 2. Cinderella is literally stuck on the steps of the palace (not just indecision)
well i feel like her literally being stuck is like a metaphor so both are rught
the song is absolutely about indecision. The joke is that they make the character literally stuck to explore that feeling
i think that's the metaphor
@@begaydocrime5719 Exactly, but he didn't know that when reviewing it and thought it was just about indecision.
Listening to “Your Fault” first is a HUGE mistake like man, you have to be so confused
I mean with knowing the original Jack and The Beanstalk story and the hint Felicity gave him, this is more context than he'd usually have in one of these videos-
“Children Will Listen”, “I Know Things Now” and “Prologue” are my Into the Woods song requests.
Prologue is a must!!!!
if you ever want to watch the original broadway version, the full thing IS available on youtube and in great quality :)
Yeah, I’m not a really big fan of how the songs were adapted in the film… I feel like it’s easier to appreciate the original
Yes!
Definitely agree. Although the movie was certainly entertaining, the original Broadway is the best way to introduce yourself to these songs.
Yes!!! This!
Yeah the movie had amazing visuals and I liked most of the cast, but aside from cutting songs, they cut out the narrator/mysterious man and like 70% of the humor. I still like it, but it's never the first version I would show someone
Not Mathew thinking the witch’s death was a fun party trick
Or him shipping the two BROTHERS during Agony ... 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The woman who sang “on the steps of the palace” plays Eliza in Hamilton
Philippa sou ?
The very talented Phillipa Soo
I believe the two princes are brothers in the movie so them being a couple wouldn't work out, but to each their own.
LMAO
Princest is Wincest
they are also brothers in the actual musical so…
@@BeatsPerMinute2 They are brothers in every reality except Mathew's lol
Sweet home alibama
Matthew, as an outsider, trying to follow along who's fault it actually is, was beautiful
It was hysterical 😂
What I learned from this video: the actress that played Eliza in Hamilton (Phillipa Soo) was 2022's Into the Woods Cinderella 😯 that actually makes a lot of sense, she's incredible!
I know her from playing Chang'e in Over the Moon, in multiple languages, not enough people saw that she was so good and the film hit so well imo
Literally. I downloaded the 22 soundtrack instantly once I found that out
I think the intro song Into The Woods is a great introduction (kind of) i highly reccomend the broadway version. Its avaliable alongside the full show in high quality here on youtube
the original stage version is soooo much better imo. the disney ver tried to make it darker but also stripped it of some of its darkness. its a dark fantasy-comedy that satirizes fairy tales and how we treat children growing up, and the disney version took itself waay more seriously to its detriment
Cosign this.
I'm salty about how they changed Rapunzel's fate in the movie. It was a driving motivation for the witch, and they nerfed it.
@@Discworld-Edge-Witch The pacing of the film sucked ballz , especially after the wishes get granted ( end of Act I. )
Seriously. Even with Meryl Streep and her Oscar nom for this movie, I was watching it like ... Did nobody tell her her role was supposed to be funny??? The way she played or was directed to play the witch alone sucked like half the comedy out of it.
It amazes me how the movie succeeded to be both more and less dark than the movie. It has a darker tone than the original cause it takes itself way too seriously and remove all the humour. But it is less dark in the themes cause they didn't get them and remove important aspect of it, as if they didn't get that the morale is for adults and they remove it.
I thibk Disney worst movies are adaptations cause they have the tendancy to adapt things without getting why people love them in the first place. Or maybe they get it but they still decide to do it their own way and it doesn't work, I don't know.
Starting with Your Fault is funny since it goes over like 3/4 of the Movie's plot
16:25 y'know someone is gonna make that a clip and call it "matthew mckenna out of context"
He practically asked for that one 😂😂
Was just gonna comment this
"Agony" is the highlight of the movie for me; it was a very well cast movie, lots of talent, but the actual adaptation of it (what they chose to omit, etc) wasn't great. Definitely would love to see a part two, with (preferable Broadway performances of) "Moments in the Woods", "There are Giants in the Sky", "I Know Things Now", and "Stay with Me". But if you do decide to watch the show, the original Broadway recording is the GOAT
“There is a prince and…princess” 😃
You can literally make an entire video of just analyzing the prologue intro song lol. 12-15 minutes depending on which version you go with!
Yesssss
I think someone else already recommended Sideways's analysis video, But it's really great. th-cam.com/video/9b6OEjF4s1M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Yh6klrXn8N3PGWUY
Absolutely wild that this didn't start with the Prologue. I know it's long but if you do a part two (which yessss please do!) pleaaaase start with that! The original broadway version specifically!
Into the Woods Original Broadway proshot was released on DVD and Blu-ray so you don’t have to watch a crappyVHS copy. I recommend getting that and watching the whole thing because it’s fantastic. I wore out the VHS as a kid and now I watch the blu-ray about once a year.
its on youtube too!
Stephen Sondheim was absolutely wild. His music is so complicated and interesting in ever show he ever wrote.
You should def watch Agony Reprise from the Broadway show (it was cut from the movie) and possibly the song 'I wish' which is crazy long but sets up the story well.
“Can’t you see I’m in AGONY?” Lol! That was hilariously fantastic. 😂
The broadway version is better. You should see if you can find it (or clips of it) on TH-cam. It’s a great show, worth the deep dive.
You can find the full recording of the original Broadway production on TH-cam.
I believe the full version is available on Netflix
Phillips Soo, who sings On The Steps of the Palace, was the original Eliza in Hamilton. She’s amazing!
There's another part of 'No one is Alone' that i absolutely adore, it happens later in the movie ❤
When you find out that the princes are brothers...😶
Here is the PBS recording of the Broadway play on TH-cam.
th-cam.com/video/kqCsQCsinK4/w-d-xo.html
Description: "In the spring of 1989, the 1987 original Broadway cast of "Into The Woods" (with the exception of Cindy Robinson as Snow White instead of Jean Kelly) reunited a year and a half after its opening to tape the production in its entirety for the PBS’s "American Playhouse." Three performances (May 23rd, 24th, and 25th) were played for audiences, filmed with seven cameras in the (then) Martin Beck Theater with certain elements changed slightly for the screen and additional pick up shots not filmed in front of an audience for various purposes. This recording first aired on March 15, 1991 as the program's Season 10 premiere episode and has since been released on tape, DVD, and digitally."
8:45 She couldn't get the cow herself, because otherwise the potion she was making wouldn't work as she can't have touched the ingredients. Also, it had to specifically be Jack's cow because it had to be a cow "as white as milk".
I feel like Agony is the only thing the movie did in the spirit of the og vision of the musical - hence why it's so iconic. But I'll never forgive them for cutting the reprise!
They also cut basically every song from act 2.
12:30 they’re trying to keep the beans from growing into more stalks for the giants
As a theater kid you reacting to this was TO GOOD! love you!!!
You should watch sideways' video on how the musical works. It's a great breakdown on the themes and the story and makes it so much better listening back.
You beat me to it but that is a great suggestion! th-cam.com/video/9b6OEjF4s1M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Yh6klrXn8N3PGWUY
Love Mathew immediately mentioning the difficulty of the music 😂 Yes Mathew. Behold. Sondheim.
The angsty prince splash dance song, nice! This is the thing I wanted to see in this video the most!
Last midnight in the movie is my all time favourite, it is ICONIC
12:16 They're picking them up because they don't want the beans to sprout into giant beanstalks.
Aww I was so hoping to see you react to Johnny Depp singing "Hello little girl."
ok this is my favorite musical omg.
personally i love the original broadway version most. (you can easily find it on youtube if you want to watch it!) the songs from the movie here arent too bad, but the movie just doesnt capture the storytelling as well as the broadway version.
anyways im so glad you listened to these songs thank you!!
I cackled every time you screamed "AGONY"
Between this and the Ninjago out of context video, I don’t think he understands brothers
I would love to see a part 2!
No one is alone is an orphan telling another orphan that she understands grief and will always have her support.
I’m sitting here watching Matt faun over Phillipa Soo’s range and talent, and I’m like, DUDE - have you seen Hamilton??
They can’t be a couple. They are BROTHERS!
I performed this show once
it was fun
Yes
YOOO SAME!!! Bakers wife:)
My eldest sister was the witch in a local production once.
I was in the Jr version and was mysterious man
@@Captgroundhog I helped direct one of those
the ending is much happier
Got to be in a local into the woods this summer so it makes me overjoyed you are reacting to it!! ❤❤❤
16:00 - It's Cinderella's Prince vs Repunzel's Prince, and they are, as many have pointed out - related 😂 Though honestly, if that wasn't established, I can see where you're getting the vibes.
First part: the wishes of the characters and what they do to get thrir wish and thr second part is the consequences of a lot of it and how to start again even if you have lost almost everything in the process
Soo just a little background to
Make it funnier and make
More sense. Chris is Prince Charming and in this one Cinderella runs from the ball twice as it goes on for 3 nights. The other guy is his little brother and Repunzals Prince who he can only visit by climbing her hair into the tower.
I still hope you’ll do *Hilda* series, out of context. It’s a great show 💙💙💙💙💙
Into the woods-Any moment ( from the movie) I want to see your reaction to that song.😂
19:30 that’s Sondheim for you lol
Starting with "Last Midnight" first must be so confusing because it requires more context than ANY other song in the show XD
9:22 well you’re in good company there my friend shes my favorite character idc if shes awful I love her. one of my dream roles fr
Agony from the movie is fun but im sooo glad you saw the broadway version of Your Fault
I do music therapy and my singing teacher does different songs to help me learn different techniques. She got me to sing giants in the sky, I know things now and no one is alone. These songs are going to give you hell but it’s worth it in the end. These songs are not easy to do lol
YOU GOTTA LISTEN TO "ON THE STEPS OF THE PALACE" ANNA KENDRICK SINGS IT AND ITS SOOOO GOOD
I can't believe you reacted to into the woods and not the main song called "into the woods". Please make a part 2.
Mathew discovers Sondheim's style
"Going after vengeance after someone who has power is probably not going to end well for him"....
Oh boy, do I have a musical for you...
5:05 to 5:15 was extremely sondheim and I lived for it
Oh my god, for the next you NEEED to do the ‘Prologue’ song, ‘Giants in the sky’, ‘I know things now’ and ‘Greens greens’.
"I don't really like musicals" 😮
👀 me having seen his multiple glowing reactions to several musicals . . .
They are picking up the beans she threw because they don’t want them to grow and bring more giants
Loved your reaction to these songs so far!!! To give you a quick context, The Witch placed a curse on the Baker as punishment for his father’s thievery. He has 3 midnights to gather ingredients to break the curse and this quest interacts with other fairytales like Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, etc. I’d really love to see you watch The Prologue (Broadway), Stay With Me (Broadway or Film), I Know Things Now (Film), There Are Giants In The Sky (Broadway or Film), and Hello Little Girl (Film). The Witch is played by Bernadette Peters in the Original Broadway Version, I highly recommended you check her out in Annie (1982) and Disney’s Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (1997). 🌲🐮🧣🥿💇🏼♀️
Sondheim is kind of infamous for his intricate lyrics and rhyme schemes. It's some of the hardest but most satisfying Broadway scores to sing.
FYI: pitch is tar. At she was literally stuck on the stairs.
No More is an underrated song from the original production
Such a good musical! And a great one to watch all the way through because the plot is thick as hell!
I cannot wait to see you react to more Into The Woods songs! I hope you do more of the movie versions!!!
I went to see that in theaters and was like praying for it to be over sooner
I really love NPH's take on the witch's rap if you do more! It's definitely out of context as it was performed during the pandemic but really delightful and tells you more about the motivations.
"it sounds like it's your fault"
Yes ..that is the point lol
Came on here for another video and was like WHAT an into the woods reaction?? Count me in! 😍💞 Also the funniest part of the song agony is that they sing it twice in the musical ... about different girls 😅
Matt's gonna be the kid from sky high with that superpower
Definitely need to see your reaction to the other songs of into the woods there’s so many good ones 😭🙏
I LOVE the movie it has the understanding the “yeah this is a TWO HOUR MOVIE! so we are just gonna be silly with it we get that on broadway it’s not silly but like… guys it’s a story about mismatched fairytales that people are going to sit down for TWO HOURS to watch… broadway can make it serious and masterful we are going to have fun because last time we tried to make a cult classic adaptation faithfully people HATED IT (cats) so we are gonna have fun this time
Arguably the Broadway version takes itself less seriously than the movie. What people complain about the Disney version is that they butchered the storytelling and made it more serious. While the Broadway version is a full on comedy with a heart at its core. Don't get me wrong I enjoy Agony and Meryl Streep's performance. I absolutely love most of the cast as actors but Disney did ruin the story by cutting most of the songs and important scenes of the second part, which is the part where the characters actually understand the moral of the story and therefore give it meaning.
For instance, the whole erasure of the baker's father and not having "No More" undermines the baker's character arc so much.
@@daniella_otsuki THIS. But also, and MORE problematic IMO, is that the movie cuts Rapunzel's death. ...which completely ruins the Witch's arc and purpose.
Another good song to listen to is "Hello, Little Girl," which is the Big Bad Wolf song. It is very VERY creepy in a way that makes you think about some of the themes in the original Fairy Tale of "Little Red Ridding Hood" with the idea that "the danger is in the house & disguised as someone you SHOULD be able to trust." Either the movie, or original play, I do have to say the costume in the original Broadway version plays it up a bit more with a Big Bad Wolf with what looks like it would be abs of steel on his body suit.
I just saw the picture and I knew it was her after I watched Pitch perfect
Anna Kendrick is in this musical
YESSSS we love the musical reactions
I love into the woods! Your fault is probably my fave and the last midnight
Bro wtf I hadn't watched this for years, then I watched it last night and you made a vid on it now I swear humans are a hive mind 💀
This whole pitter-patter song is one of Stephen Sondheim's trademarks.
Im pretty sure I have seen into the woods but not for a LONG time and I don’t remember a thing so I’m looking forward to watching along for the “first time” and being both entertained and confused for once 😂
12:18 They don't want the beans, they're trying to get them back before they have a chance to grow into more beanstalks that could bring more giants down.
Chris Pine is also the villain in Wish, he sings in that too. Its great hes overly dramatic in that too
You should listen to the Agony reprise! Unfortunately cut from the movie but the original cast stageshow version is available.
Matthew shes physically stuck on the steps the prince laid a trap to keep her there but she has to grt back home before the magic wears off she isnt manipulating anyone she just wansts the prince to be able to find her later on
*Listen to songs from Chicago (2002)*
Chicago! Chicago! Chicago! Chicago!
The princes are brothers who are trying to one up each other in terms of how their princesses are unattainable.
Would LOVE to see you react to the full Broadway proshot. It's such a fantastic show mixing the comedy and drama in just the right amounts. The movie, while good, just doesn't do it justice.
So happy Matthew did a video on my fav musical 💙
I wish more people would watch/react to the original version that was filmed on stage instead of the bastardized Disney version. The Disney version lost SO much of the nuance and tone and story. Especially when it comes to the Witch and the Baker's character arcs and stories. They just didn't know what they were doing with the material.
The entire story is cored around the concepts of parenthood and what we leave/teach the generations that follow us. The witch's story directly reflects this with Rapunzel's arc. The first song The witch sings to Rapunzel is about being overprotective and controlling, and imparts the line: "Children Should Listen!". Then, in act 2, in remorse of Rapunzel's death, the witch sings "Children Won't Listen.", and then at the end of the show, for the finale after morality has hit the fan and the fairytale is done, she reflects on what we impart as parents and the lessons and lives we inadvertently impart on our kids with "Children WILL Listen."
(One of the biggest things the Disney film does wrong is it removes Rapunzel's death, which COMPLETELY ruins the Witch's character arc and artistic purpose.)
But yeah, you should really check out/watch the original staged version they filmed with Bernedette Peters. It's phenomenal, and is one of my favorite Sondheim musicals. Such a great production too. ^_^
8:47 She needed specific items. A cow whiter than milk, a shoe made of gold, and hair yellow as corn
This was awesome to hear your take on these songs, as well as hearing songs from the Broadway casts, which I haven’t before 🎭😆 I think if you’re gonna do any more, you should definitely do the opening number. It’s super long, but there are so many layers to it and it’s actually a pretty good opening (at least for the film version it is).
Agony is my favorite song, it has such good vocals and is hilarious! Also I highly recommend you listen to Newsies the Broadway musical, because it stars Jeremy Jordan, who was Varian in Tangled the Series
And *amphibia* out of context and true colours episode. ✌️
