We have to remember that Cory died in July and this episode was shot in September. It was extremely raw for everyone. The performances of the cast are real and that enhances them because they are not acting grief, they are grieving. But the writers are also grieving, everyone knew each other… Ryan Murphy says he regrets shooting the episode. He says that he would probably end the show after Cory’s death now.

I agree with Ryan saying that if it was now prob would have ended the show after Cory’s death and he def wouldn’t have done this episode ( and so soon after). I can’t imagine how the cast and crew made it through this. I personally believe it was too much for anymore to have to contend with, especially such young people. With that being said, the decision to move forward with this episode and the timing of it gives us arguably the most real, raw, vulnerable, grief stricken hour of television history.

I don’t think Lea could make that song live. But, she made a tribute and sang this song for his 10th anniversary. It would be lovely if you react to that. You can still feel a lot of raw emotion on it. I believe on her opening night for Funny Girl she left an empty seat for him too. And did a small tribute for him on her speech when closing too. The fact that nays breaking down crying in the scene is genuine😢

  • @Heida77
    @Heida77 ปีที่แล้ว +90

I've only watched the entire episode in full twice and again with you. It was so hard watching it for the first time but I feel like it helped me "accept" that he was gone. I genuinely felt like a friend had died. It's been 10 years but I'm still so sad.
Of course Rachel and Santana's scenes are some of the saddest, but the scene that really breaks me is Kurt, Burt and Carole in Finn's room. Especially Carole's line: "You have to keep on being a parent, even though you don't get to have a child anymore." I know it's not really acting but Romy Rosemont is incredible in that scene. The scenes with Puck and Beiste were heartbreaking too and I don't agree that it was "off".
Other good lines are Kurt's "Shame is a wasted emotion" and Sue's "It's just so pointless, all that potential...", which is both so true (at least in that context). I think what Sue meant is that a young and gifted person like Finn dying is such a waste of what could have been, not that his life (or any life) was pointless. At least that's how I took it. I actually think it made sense for Sue to react the way she did. What didn't make sense was Tina, but then again, nothing since S3 has made sense about Tina.
Some people were weirded out by Will taking the jacket because he was so attached to his former student, but considering how he had acted prior to his death I think it made perfect sense. I think he felt a tremendous amount of guilt for losing so much time with Finn because he was acting like a child after the Emma kiss. Say what you want about Will, but he genuinely cared about these kids. I do agree it was pretty shitty to Puck though.
As people probably told you when you reacted to the performance, Naya's breakdown was scripted but much later (at the end of the performance). Also, considering how she died, the lyrics "Sink me in the river at dawn" take on a whole new meaning. And Puck and the tree... if you know that Mark hung himself from a tree. Creepy.
The fantasy Rachel describes to Shue was how the show was supposed to end. I get why you'd question if she would leave Broadway for him and come back to Lima, but... let's just wait and see what happens.
Finn's cause of death was deliberately not mentioned because, much like Kurt, they wanted to focus on how he lived and not how he died. There were mixed opinions on that but I personally think it was the right call. It wasn't really necessary for the plot anyway.
However, Kurt's line is pretty much identical to what Carol said when she told Finn that his father died of an overdose. I haven't seen any confirmation but apparently an early draft had Finn dying of a drug overdose.
Also, while Quinn was very missed, Dianna has shut down the rumours that Ryan didn't want her back for the episode. Pretty sure it was because she was filming a movie (The Family with Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones). And Heather obviously wasn't there because of her pregnancy.
Interesting fact: The title card, which has Finn/Cory in the Glee logo, was made by a fan. And the quote on the plaque is "The show must go...all over the place...or something" which is an actual Finn quote from S2E17 "A Night of Neglect".
Sidenote: I would love it if you reacted to Glee and Lea winning at the Teen Choice Awards, which was held just a few weeks after Cory's death. Kevin, Jenna and Amber made speeches, as did Lea, who made a surprise appearance. There was not a dry eye in the house. th-cam.com/video/ogsw2gfpGhY/w-d-xo.html

14:24 - Ryan Murphy talked about the loss of Cory recently. He spoke about this episode, it took the longest of any to film. The next longest was 4x as short. He also spoke about the team trying to decide what to do once Cory died (it occurred between seasons). He now says, and he said this with regret and sorrow, that they should’ve NEVER continued the show after his death.
Now, this statement was SHOCKING, because some of their best rated episodes and best selling performances came in season 5 and season 6. The statement that he would’ve ended it at season 4 proves he is not in it for the money. He said recording this episode was obviously hard because they were mourning the loss of Finn and Cory, and everyone mourns differently. It made the cast separate like shotgun pellets, he says friendships that he KNOWS existed ended- and that hurts him every day.

Make you feel my love is so beautiful and the fact that Lea has sung it live and it is so emotional and beautiful when she does. I cant watch Glee often anymore because when I get to the final episode of season 3 I remember what happens and then I feel sad for a week🙃🥲

I can't till this day watch this episode without crying my heart out from the very first scene until solid 30 minutes after the end of the episode. Knowing that there was practically zero acting in it, makes this 100% more painful to watch, they all felted the loss and it was completely on display during filming. Even Naya's break down was unscripted, she couldn't finish the song and they kept it in.
That's just heartbroken honestly. I hope they are all in a better place, even Mark that has done horrible things, I hope they are all in a place of learning and preparing to be better. I hope they're all in peace right now.

I remember watching this episode when it first aired and I remember feeling like it was still very fresh and raw that he had passed, but the scene when his mom broke down was when I started crying and never stopped after that really. I feel like looking back now I can see some of the awkwardness you mentioned, but if ever a show gets a pass for less than stellar writing or performances this would be it. I forgive it all in this ep because wow, how DO you handle something like that? There is no wrong or right. I do remember feeling like this was one of the first times we saw real grief so publicly and made it the focus. The only other time I can remember something like that during that time period was on a show called 8 Simple Rules when the actor John Ritter suddenly passed away and the actors (Kaley Kuoco and Katey Sagal in particular) had to address it and then take on the show after losing the lead and frankly its premise and try to keep it moving forward. It exceptionally moving to watch real grief in a performance where you have the channel it into a character. Personally this episode for me is one of the main reasons I think Glee isn't something we've already forgotten about.

Cory's death was my first real and true experience with grief. This show and he meant so much to me I just broke inside for a little bit after he passed. I remember being so confused to my feelings and my mom had to tell me that I was grieving. Which sounds crazy I never met him I was just a fan, but Glee had helped me through some really bad dark times and losing him really felt like losing a friend.

    • @GraciesMom

I’m so sorry you went through this-the first time grief hits us …it’s such a shock because there are so many emotions we feel. And no it’s NOT crazy that you grieved so deeply for a character and the human who played him. There are many of us who let TV/movie characters in soooo much…sometimes more than irl….and we laugh when they laugh, we cry when they cry. If the actor themselves pass, it hurts even more. The fact that he felt like a close friend -well that adds ANOTHER layer. I’ve read that Lea sang for Cory on Broadway, which is a wonderful way to remember/honor him. I find that when I grieve, whether it’s for my own brother or for anyone else who’s touched my life, it helps me to find a way to honor him/them-cry if I need to and then just live my best life. This was a tough episode to watch because I loved Cory too. Sending you, and everyone Glee-centered, lots of hugs.

Thank you so much for reacting to this on your TH-cam! I love watching your reactions, they’re filled with so much genuine care and emotion. I don’t have anyone that shares my love for Glee and these characters and actors so watching your videos makes me feel like I’m watching with you.
This was the episode that got me into Glee, only a few years ago. I was interested in watching because my cousin passed away at 21 yrs old, the same way Cory did. He was also the quarterback of his football team in HS and the popular kid that stuck up for all the underdogs and put the bullies in their place. To this day, I wonder if he had a natural ability to sing and just didn’t know it. Anyway, I find comfort and solace through music, I grieve through music, I get signs in the form of songs from loved ones who’ve passed, ect. It just speaks to my soul. It took me a long time to build up the courage to watch it, I sobbed through the entire episode ( still do). I knew that episode would speak to me, I could have never imagined that from then on Glee would become my before bed show ( 3 yrs and counting). Rewatching this episode now, with my love for Cory and Naya, it’s tough to get through. Such raw emotion and grief and less than a month after Cory passed. How the cast and crew got through this, I’ll never know. So, that’s my rant about my love for Glee, this episode and your reaction videos.

Thank you for doing a video on this episode, and bless your sweet, compassionate heart!... I watched it and cried with you, crying even more than I did when I originally watched the episode 10 years ago. Ryan Murphy has said many times, that Cory's death collectively broke all of their hearts, and that the spirit and joy of doing the show had... 'left the building'. He said that he watched the episode when he originally edited it, then never looked at it again. To this day, Lea Michele has still never watched it. Such a sad and painful situation all the way around.
We all know that these actors weren't really high school students, but they were still very young. They were all living their dream, and just beginning to navigate, or learn how to navigate, being 'stars'. I can't even comprehend how shattering and painful this was for all of them. Ryan said he initially considered cancelling Glee after Cory's passing, but talked extensively with Lea about what she felt the right thing to do would be. It was finally decided that Cory would have wanted the show to keep going... so that the cast, crew, writers, wardrobe, etc., would still have jobs... and could continue doing what they loved.
Thank you again for reviewing this episode... I actually really, really enjoy watching all of your videos, and love your passion for music. I also love your caring and nurturing personality, and your protective stance when it comes to your members. BRAVO!

I think when sue said there was no lesson to be learned from it, she meant finn's death. She was saying that it was pointless to lose someone so young, so full of life and with so much potential, that not everything happens for a reason and we just have to keep going, no matter how frustrating that is, because that's life. I actually like her plotline a lot because it shows someone grieving differently. She's not crying like the others, she's joking around like she always does. She feels the pain but she wants things to go back to normal, she doesn't want the school to be mourning forever because she thinks it's all pointless. I think that's a very interesting perspective on loss and grief.

I had a gym teacher when I was in high school who Sue Sylvester always gave me flashbacks to. She hated me and believe me, the feeling was quite mutual!! She actually fabricated absences on my attendance report so she could flunk me...SENIOR YEAR!! I see the three deaths in different ways. Cory was a tragic accident. He was in a fight with his demons, and they won. Mark Salling was a truly desperate act. He felt trapped and panicked. Naya was a Mama Lion, protecting her baby. She used the last of her energy making sure he was safely in the boat and tragically was too exhausted to get in herself. I hope that the three of them all found the peace that they so truly deserved. God Bless them all.

Frank was the only “boyfriend” I had before my husband (he wasn't a true boyfriend, we just called it that to bolster both of our self-esteems); I went to Prom with him all three years of high school. He died tragically in February of my Senior Year of college (2001). My mom waited to tell me until I came home for Spring Break a month later, because only 4 months before (November 2000), my grandma had died (which was my first major loss).

They didn't want to write in how he died because they didn't want to jeopardize the reputation of Cory or Finn. I'm sure if they had written it in, it wouldn't have been the same reason as real life, but they didn't want people to see Cory in a different, more negative light.
The initial plan for the end of Glee was to have Finn take over the Glee club and replace Will, but they had to re-write that as well and have Sam take over instead in the last episode, which is definitely something you should react to if you haven't already.

I think Ryan Murphy said it was decided the reason of Finn's deas was the same a Cory, as to raise awareness. It is briefly mentioned that he died of an overdose at a college party in the episode, tho in Cory's side it was a long fight with his addiction.
The episode hits this hard because they were actually mourning a colleague, a friend, a lover... He was engaged and soon to be married with Lea by the timr he passed away.
When Naya died i think I may speak for everyone when i say that we all went back to that scene of her singing for Finn, it hit double then.
As for Mark Salling aka Puck, I don't feel the same grief tbh, I have mixed feelings, because his circumstances were so very different. For ever the one still hits me the most is Naya's paasong away...

it’s never mentioned how finn died, i’m not sure where you heard about the line where they say he died at a college party of an overdose, but it’s never been featured in the episode. the closest to that is burt saying the last time he saw him finn was upset about an upcoming test at college.
also he and lea were not engaged. they were talking about their future and that was probably soon to come, but the biggest contributor of that rumor was a photoshopped image of them from the kids choice awards with a paper that said “we’re getting married” the actual paper said cole sprouse, who they were welcoming on the stage
