If they slashed their prices in half they would sell a lot more units of both scenery and minis. GW are pricing themselves into bankruptcy, we are going into a global recession with soaring energy prices, most people are deciding between food or fuel. No one is going to have disposable cash for these overpriced products and those that do will shop around
Yeah, I definitely agree. It's clear they have some really talented artists and sculptors, but considering the amount of terrain and models you need for all of their games, the prices do hit hard. I get it, a business has to make money, and workers have to get paid, but if I don't see a good deal, I just can't justify the purchase.
Yo for real, I've always thought more would be affordable if it was split in half. I can't tell you how mant times I've seen the same stuff never leave shelves and that's at my busy locals
GW has already harpooned all the whales, so to speak. There just are not very many people who have the money, the will, and the free time to dump thousands into overpriced plastic, and the people who do can afford 3D printers or Patreon subscriptions from independent artists. With people getting poorer every day, I just don't think there are enough whales in the world to singlehandedly financially support GW. They need products everyday people can afford, or they need to accept that they are a niche product that has already maxed out its growth potential.
ya i think you nailed it here... i think they have accepted its a niche product, and maxed out growth. the way they are managing the business implies exactly that. a normal company would go the other direction, and keep expanding, but GW is content.
I was playing along at home. Not all the stuff that is available comes up if you type in ‘terrain’ The fronteris and thondia stuff is still available. It’s the webstore
With the rise of Home 3D printers and high competition from Perry and War Games Atlantic where you can get 40 miniatures for $35 Games Workshop cannot continue charge double the amount for the same number of miniatures
I think it's repackaging of a lot of the line. They have some major kits that are now "no longer available in the online store." The Black Coach" is the biggest example...
This has all happened before over the years. get the terrain while you can, or it will be gone. I'm looking at my rare Fortified Manor right now. Fantastic terrain, just discontinued.
Coming over from the gunpla hobby I thought I had already seen the most expensive plastic. Never would I have ever thought though that I would be spending around 60 bucks typically for 4-5 minis. Absolute lunacy
I get the feeling GW is starting to have the Kodak/Blockbuster faze. The market is changing and they’re only reacting with manipulating price. There are so many options for terrain, printing, 3rd Parties, homemade & using game store terrain. You can’t charge a premium for it anymore. Also, they are showing us it has no value. Why can they nearly give it away in a box set but charge a premium separately? I would like to own some official GW terrain, but I’m not going to pay over what they value it at in a box set. They’re not using their IP wisely, drop the price and let consumers go a-la-cart to assemble the contents of a box set if they aren’t ready to drop $250+ during a pre-order or release?
Ahh "Fuck-you-lant" haha.. I really think trash terrain tutorials and the 3D printing market is absolutely crushing the terrain market for GW. Unless they are unit specific (notice those are out of stock) are the only terrain you need since you won't be able to use 3D printed or 3rd party terrain for model specific terrain. ,. The prices are absolutely laughable since you can buy a decent FDM printer to make terrain for like $200-$300 and print as much as you want, or the very in depth trash terrain tutorials to 40k ruins or fantasy ruins
Does anyone remember how big the Forgeworld Terrain category used to be? Soooooo many awesome kits. Now ........ Just Warhammer is following the same pattern. Just 2 decades later.
The last and only piece of terrain ive ever bought from gw was that imperial house they used to have for fantasy. Great piece but I can essentially recreate it with things I can get from the garbage at my work ( construction). Would not cry if they stopped doing terrain entirely
I don't expect GW will ever advertise other companies (much more affordable) terrain, and I doubt I'll ever see them offering people with 3D Printers the files for official miniatures, but I do think they are aware that anyone who wants terrain is going to either buy an off brand or just make their own. I do think this is why they're putting a lot more emphasis on Kill Team on the very likely chance that a new player only ever buys the one box of miniatures.
Yeah, AoS terrain and objectives are so expensive, like the out of print stuff that didn't stay more then 2 to 4 years is just redic expensive third party. GW should have terrain be the loss leader, they should have it be 30% less so players can buy 2 or 3 sets. But I think GW took a large hit from China manufacturing which is why I'm seeing a large discontinuation from a lot of sigmar product as well as a terrible switch over to Vanguard repackaging with whatever they have. I no longer care about GW boxsets because they are too expensive and they are set up with horrible factions just like combat patrols and vanguards. Totally just based on terrain you need to be getting into printing for COOL terrain if not going third party and getting cool terrain for half the price or less.
Ok, so as its not talked about in the comments, I can tell you what's happened. Terrain that is no longer available was made in china and during the pandemic it is well known they pulled out of china for the most part. Terrain also doesn't sell the best. Its one of those things that can be made at home or bought cheaper else were, for less cost. All of these things has lead GW to back off of terrain.
Ah gotchya. I figured something about China was involved, as well as the 3rd party market, I just wasn't sure what exactly. Still, thanks to pointing that out.
It's possible GW might be backing out of terrain altogether? Like, you can get some fantastic sets of terrain online for pretty cheap, and now you can get professionally-made cardboard terrain that covers a whole battlefield for like 100 USD. Yeah, it looks 2D, but 100 USD barely gets you 2 pieces of terrain from GW, so they're already getting pushed out by competition. At least, that's just my theory, I dont know what most people prefer for their terrain. I've been getting more and more into arts and crafts, so it almost feels like a challenge to make something similar. I remember back in the day when GW used to give you directions on how to make terrain in the core rules. I was reading the 3rd edition codex for Tau, and they had a whole page dedicated to ideas for Tau terrain. Time flies sometimes. Anyway, thank you so much for the video! Maybe if they had a huge variety of fantasy terrain in one box, I'd be interested. Maybe $150 for a full battlefield (so I can use it for D&D too)? I think that would be my price point, but I doubt GW would go that low. I just don't have as many issues making Sci-fi or 40k terrain as I do fantasy. There's just a sort of mysticism that fantasy requires for good art and terrain that I haven't quite grasped yet.
I'd put money on this being down to were it's produced. With the increased cost of shipping from China, were terrain was manufactured, it may now be cheaper to produce in Nottingham after shipping back moulds.
Every time I want to get back into building up my army I realize that a box of FIVE models costs 60 USD! I can buy two bottles of resin for that price and print out dozens of models and scenery for that same cost. If they dropped their prices, it would keep people like me from buying resin, and help a lot of people afford to try the game out.
I'm inclined to believe the terrain in cycle other than faction terrain is going to be based in what they sell in the skirmish sets. Fronteris is simple and effective and in a limited number of kits. Sector Mechanicus / Zone Mortalis is probably gonna be replaced by the sets from the new Kill Team season, and Warcry is sticking with Ghur for this season (did you see the campfire with the animal being spit roasted in one of the WarCom articles?), which will probably end about when AoS 4 or a new campaign/setting gets announced. Tell you what though, with them repackaging so much skirmish terrain, I'd -kill- for them to bring back the Warcry 2019 Azyrite ruins. Decent enough modularity, I'd love to do some Legacy of Kain / Nosgoth style ruins for an RPG type of board. Just glad I was able to pick up a lot of the shattered dominion sets before they got yanked since that was some of the sexiest terrain they produced in recent times.
I think the terrain was more and more often manufactured in China. Perhaps with Brexit considerations and China shipping/covid issues could be eating into their terrain margins. I think it must be related to that to a degree. Hard to say though. I've noticed this too, it seems like the box sets are the best way to get terrain sets from them now, especially if you want the other minis in the sets or can sell them to a friend or whatever. It is rough though; outside of these box sets it's pretty hard to purchase a cohesive looking board from them atm. Still great terrain, and frankly you can mix different looking stuff on a table and it can still look amazing, but not like it was before. Obviously you can still find older stuff in various local stores though.
It's cheaper to buy the stuff to build your own and have spares left over to use to build more in time. And by doing so, it can personalised by the builder, especially if they have a bits box.
I love that GW is so insanely greedy that they would rather stop production of a product rather than lower the insane price gouging of plastic that costs them pennies to make. I was done long ago with the manufacturing scarcity scams GW constantly run to justify their insane prices.
I think it's the "seasonal/battlepass" "into the dark" a few models a few pieces of terrain if you want a complete terrain set you need to buy all the box sets for that season. Source: Warhammer-community Sunday preview august 22nd (Get ready to breach, kill team goes into the dark.)
The boat is a required piece for the army and its been sold out forever, I literally can't play the army because of it, other armies are similar, the nurgle tree is a MUST HAVE if you play aos or you might as well just give up 200 points a game
Starting a small warhammer group with a couple buddies of mine and a few mutual acquaintances. Due to the availability and cheap price of 3D printing… I’ve not spent much on a basic board (no money to GW) and one of our players is printing his entire army (again no money to GW). Add in some of us are contemplating printing armies… and we’ll yeah it’s not looking good…
I agree, the trend does seem to be to sell it separately, however the warcry and kill team subscription style boxes may change that. "The Magmic Battleforge" for Fyreslayers and other faction terrain seems to takes forever to restock if it does at all.
Feck-you-lent. Those have been sold out for ages. Honestly wonder if they even have the mold anymore. Still waiting on them to reprint the malign sorcery set. The goblin stuff can be made with toothpicks, popsicle sticks, and elmer's glue. They don't even make all the terrain you would need to play a proper game by their own rules, so going third party is actually necessary at this point, but also, they can't make you buy whole new terrain every time there's an update, so I'm going to bet they're backing off from it.
You missed a lot of sets with your search There are still some battlezones and killzones with further terain for aos and 40k as well as som smaller kits in between.
unfortunately, i cant make GW have a useful search tool, on their web store lol. that being said i trust people got the point... there is more terrain not for sale, than for sale. also are you sure the items you're referring to are actually available? check out the killzones, i think you'll find they only sell Octarius and moroch... so unless i'm missing something there are no other killzones for sale. cheers
@@WarHammerMan yes i admit there are not meny big sets but you at least missed the bigger aos terain set which is still available and in stock As well as thre or four sector mechanicus sets. But yes i get your point. We need better terain for warhammer
I literally quit Warhammer when they did the price hikes. I wanted to get a bunch of minis but paying 20-30 dollars more for the same products left me disgusted. I haven't paid much attention to the franchise for over a year now.
This is truly bizarre. If I had terrain money, I'd want some gothic ruins for 40k. That used to exist! I know because I painted them for a commission in 2014, along with that big space marine captain statue. I wanna say 9th edition changed the rules for buildings, so maybe they're no longer compatible? Maybe they weren't profitable? The game is poorer for it because those were really amazing.
Lol the "fuckulent gnarlmaw" I stopped playing Warhammer and switched to D&D a earlier this year, but I'm going to always reference the nurgle terrain as fuckulent from now on.
If they have already produced the injection molds for the plastic terrain. They should be able to produce the terrain very cheaply. The high cost is in producing the mold.
They overcharge almost every piece of terrain, if not every one. Which is why ppl dont buy them when sold separately. And when the big kits get sold with reasonable price they sell out. And in the middle is all the left over terrain kits that are way too nische designed. The new swamp warcry set might be a step up from the catacombkits which was only wierd doors and bridges, that sucked. But honestly the new swamp kit is super awkward too, both models and the trees. It probably wont sell well. So the resonable questions are, why does GW develop these wierd in between kits, and then overcharge on shit that is clearly not worth it for the players in the end. Warhammer is expensive as it is with GW prices, not manygaming groups have the economy to splash several hundred dollars on terrain and often even less interest in building and painting it as a group. I don't know how many thousands of dollars I have spent on GW terrain over the years (several) and yet I still feel like I still dont have or get enough from what I'm paying. I'm pritty sure GW all ready is feeling their customers investing in 3D printed or cast terrain that is getting better by the day putting GW terrain production to shame.
I think premium plastic terrain would have a very small market, most people are happy with mdf or cardboard, or even trash! Their terrain is super cool but after buying the models I’m out of hobby money
Krondspine is about where I was hoping it would be. It could, and should, be cheaper but it's geedubz and I half expected it to be higher, and figured 60 was a good spot to hope for instead of 80+
I agree with everyone who says that MDF and 3D printed are just so much more accessible. Though GW's stuff usually always looks good, it is not only expensive but can be a huge pain to build depending on the set. I just don't think their scenery can be competitive.
Terrain is much bigger, takes up more room and harder to store and transport. And then you have the model painters who don't even play it as a game. Why would they even need terrain if they only interested in painting models. I just bought the AoS Dominion set for only $108 why would I pay the same amount for a few pieces of terrain lol.
I heard a lot of their train was printed in China and not Nottingham, so they're probably figuring some other shit out since shipping is still problematic.
Even the books and all papers / tokens were printed in China . Remember when a box set game was supposed to have multiple expansions last year? AND then it just became limited edition? And NOW that game is back ?
A lot of the terrain is produced in China, could just be shipping issues. So doesn't have to be some sort of conspiracy. As the saying goes, "never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence". (Hanlon's razor)
low margins?! because 4 tiny pieces of plastic ruins for 50$ canadian (they fine and all but that 50$ of plastic let face it) dont make money? well shiiii
i'm not saying its low. i'm saying its low, relative to the models. they def still make money, but its clear GW is not operating the way a normal company does lol
@@WarHammerMan once I'm done with school and back working FT..I'm gonna get one. GW and FW mini prices are just too high. My 10 yr old loves Warhammer but 60 dollar boxes for 5-10 marines is ridiculous
@@cowkingkiller nah, but bc it's hand sculpted it looks amazing. But it's expensive as hell and about 20 to 40% more expensive for Europeans. You don't have to use physical terrain at all, but there are many types, dungeons and lasers makes a great alternative that doesn't break the bank.
There is another element you forgot to mention : gw terrains are made in china while the other ranges are made in the uk. Which means they have to ship it to the uk and then ship it to their customers. The shipping costs went up in the past months and there might be some china imports restrictions to western countries that we dont know about that could have impacted their terrains range
@@Sammo212 I think what really screwed over Cursed City was that importing the game into the UK from China had fee's, which were then followed by additional fees when said items were imported into non-UK countries from the UK, because the items were made in China. If GW had a distribution center somewhere in Europe, they could ship stuff from China directly there and avoid getting hit with fee's twice to customers in Europe.

ok so thondia set, has the same amount of terrain as the warcry set... all the warcry terrain is unique and new. the thondia set is $220 for terrain, and the incarnate... the warcry set is $230 and includes 2x warbands, 2x books, dice, tokens, everything to play a game... there is no comparison IMO
@@WarHammerMan I agree entirely, just pointing that out, also not accounting for the massive cost increase within 3 years from the original warcry box which had roughly the same amount of content
Why would you buy terrain from them when you can 3-D print it for practically nothing? I have more terrain than I know what to do with at this point. Also you can just resell your terrain because GW can’t put a copyright on it
care to point out any mistakes, it helps to improve... but keep in mind, the point of the video, has nothing to do with what factions, use which terrain piece...

@@Sorrowdusk yeah I think Nick is pretty good with 3D design.
Add in some of us are contemplating printing armies… and we’ll yeah it’s not looking good…
The trend is definitely selling $100 boxes of terrain like the Chalnath and Octarius Kill Zones. The faction terrain for AoS will certainly restock.
I like to think of it as Orktarius terrain. Good vid, but even God doesn't know what's going on with gw pricing.
Gw foist them onto independent retailers, where they sit… unsold
You missed a lot of sets with your search
There are still some battlezones and killzones with further terain for aos and 40k as well as som smaller kits in between.
unfortunately, i cant make GW have a useful search tool, on their web store lol. that being said i trust people got the point... there is more terrain not for sale, than for sale. also are you sure the items you're referring to are actually available? check out the killzones, i think you'll find they only sell Octarius and moroch... so unless i'm missing something there are no other killzones for sale. cheers
@@WarHammerMan yes i admit there are not meny big sets but you at least missed the bigger aos terain set which is still available and in stock
As well as thre or four sector mechanicus sets.
But yes i get your point. We need better terain for warhammer
No more or slow China plastic. So if they have to do some at home , the prices should be higher.
ya makes sense since most the terrain is made in china, despite what GW says
I literally quit Warhammer when they did the price hikes. I wanted to get a bunch of minis but paying 20-30 dollars more for the same products left me disgusted. I haven't paid much attention to the franchise for over a year now.
Weren't rotating terrain in and out for a while now? Stuff like fronteris tends to appear repackaged every now and then.
I got them in the 3rd ed Dark Eldar vs Marines box. I made them into a temple structure for Chaos using other stuff and texture paints
FDM 3d printer can easily make or come close to those type of terrain. MSG have terrain that can is good.
ya i have multiple printers, almost always running. i love printing terrain cheers
@@WarHammerMan Still i think Middle strategy battle game terrain is the way they should go.
the cost of a 3d printer and print whatever terrain you want it will pay for itself almost over night
Lol the "fuckulent gnarlmaw" I stopped playing Warhammer and switched to D&D a earlier this year, but I'm going to always reference the nurgle terrain as fuckulent from now on.
lol. that was one of my favorite blunders... i genuinely considered if i'd have to edit my video, because of that lol. so far we're ok. haha cheers
They do this for the new boxes to reflect the new edition.
If they have already produced the injection molds for the plastic terrain. They should be able to produce the terrain very cheaply. The high cost is in producing the mold.
THey are all so expensive wth
Its probably 500 or 1000 to get enough terrain for 1 w40k board
Pov me rubbing my hands together to and getting the old 40k Urban Conquest box ($240 pre-pandemic now $160)
They overcharge almost every piece of terrain, if not every one.
Fortress of Dol Guldur could totally work in 40k
ya it looks awesome, but the scale is off. its pretty small compared tot he 40k scale in particular
@@WarHammerMan I didn't realize the scale was that different. Maybe *Grot Guldur* ?
I think premium plastic terrain would have a very small market, most people are happy with mdf or cardboard, or even trash! Their terrain is super cool but after buying the models I’m out of hobby money
Krondspine is about where I was hoping it would be. It could, and should, be cheaper but it's geedubz and I half expected it to be higher, and figured 60 was a good spot to hope for instead of 80+
You can just buy and kitbash some aquarium/terrarrium stuff from pet stores for much cheaper
I agree with everyone who says that MDF and 3D printed are just so much more accessible. Though GW's stuff usually always looks good, it is not only expensive but can be a huge pain to build depending on the set. I just don't think their scenery can be competitive.
Sad you can either buy the 2 halves of red harvest terrain for over $220 or just buy the red harvest box off eBay for less then $150...
I heard a lot of their train was printed in China and not Nottingham, so they're probably figuring some other shit out since shipping is still problematic.
that makes total sense. cheers
Even the books and all papers / tokens were printed in China . Remember when a box set game was supposed to have multiple expansions last year? AND then it just became limited edition? And NOW that game is back ?
9:04 Come for the well-thought-out warhammer news, Stay for the hilarious flubs
I am to poor thats why i 3d print and plays only with friends . we never goes to the shop
aye there you go. i print a ton of stuff, its great! my favorite is printing terrain
How do I enter the contest?
Do they price individual unit hight to make bundles seem like a great deal?
To bad they have to spend all kind of money on marketing now. They could've used all that fan created content instead and cut cost.
I feel a lot of the terrain is going into Killteam boxes…
Some of the Kill Team terrain is a reprint of previous items. One KT box I bought had the exact same pieces as we're in the old Speed Freeks box set.
Makes me want a 3d printer even more
i def recommend them. i print tons of terrain, its great
@@WarHammerMan once I'm done with school and back working FT..I'm gonna get one. GW and FW mini prices are just too high. My 10 yr old loves Warhammer but 60 dollar boxes for 5-10 marines is ridiculous
GW and FW used to do some great terrain kits...
Too expensive, priced me out on principle abput 15 years ago.
And if i hear another nerd talk about "value"...lol
lol price is what you pay, value is what you get... up to you to decide if its a deal or not. i personally have multiple printers forever running...
Whats your point? You don’t have to describe all the content to explain what you mean?
thanks for sharing
Come to the DnD side of the table and see what it cost to cover a table in Dwarven Forge.
Not gonna lie, when I saw their prices, I never went to their website again.
Holy shit hahahaha, gotta be either rich, irresponsible, insane or all 3.
Is Dwarven forge the official dnd terrain seller
@@cowkingkiller nah, but bc it's hand sculpted it looks amazing. But it's expensive as hell and about 20 to 40% more expensive for Europeans. You don't have to use physical terrain at all, but there are many types, dungeons and lasers makes a great alternative that doesn't break the bank.
I really wish they would bring back the sector imperialis terrain pieces. I would buy them all... Immediately 😁
The terrain are crazy prices,i just make my own terrain.
There is another element you forgot to mention : gw terrains are made in china while the other ranges are made in the uk. Which means they have to ship it to the uk and then ship it to their customers. The shipping costs went up in the past months and there might be some china imports restrictions to western countries that we dont know about that could have impacted their terrains range
that actually screwed over Cursed City originally too.
They broke my heart with Warcry. I was going to get into it, until they pulled the Okie-Doke.
What did they pull?
@@patinho5589 he probably means high price of starter boxset. I bought it and it is AMAZING amount of plastic beautiful terrain and 20 models (2 warbands) with all the rules, dice, cards etc.
Price is high but the boxset is one of the best ones (Heart Of Ghur i mean)
@@magearamil8626 the rules are free and you can play with any models right?
Honestly GW isnt as smart as they seam I had a frien who worked there and the cost for one model is like a fel dollars they make so much money from a sale but they are honestly pricina themselves into bancrupcy
The terrain is fucking amazing. There was a bunch of cool stuff for WHFB that I always wanted to get and by the time I got my first job to buy them they discontinued everything I wanted lol. Along with the price hikes I've lost all interest
Thondia set has the same amount of terrain as the warcry set....
ok so thondia set, has the same amount of terrain as the warcry set... all the warcry terrain is unique and new. the thondia set is $220 for terrain, and the incarnate... the warcry set is $230 and includes 2x warbands, 2x books, dice, tokens, everything to play a game... there is no comparison IMO
@@WarHammerMan I agree entirely, just pointing that out, also not accounting for the massive cost increase within 3 years from the original warcry box which had roughly the same amount of content
300$ for ruins lol
im sure plenty of 3rd party will pick up the slack
ya i'm sure there will be lots of copied terrain available
Why would you buy terrain from them when you can 3-D print it for practically nothing? I have more terrain than I know what to do with at this point. Also you can just resell your terrain because GW can’t put a copyright on it
They have been phasing out the original Stormvault terrain from 2.0 since the drop of 3.0
Their refusal to slash prices on terrain kits is confusing to me. As a result most people go DIY or use aquaruium stuff
ya i think they are realizing they will not sell terrain at these prices.
It's a reboxing ya big dork
3D printer go __________!
You need to do your research....you got most the aos sets matched to the wrong factions
care to point out any mistakes, it helps to improve... but keep in mind, the point of the video, has nothing to do with what factions, use which terrain piece...
@@WarHammerMan well if you have any audience members new to aos then you should be accurate.
The fyre slayers, flesh eater courts, deepkin, and more terrain models you had wrong.
Want some advice.
Go over your info. Write down a cheat sheet so its accurate for your viewers.
Ps most aos kids are out of stock for 1 or 2 or a combo reason.
Redone books, terrain is good in those armies so
1. Out of stock.
2. Reboxing for new packing that matches thier re released army.
Terrain is soo overpriced. Most terrain is sourced from china and of much lower quality so you cant compare number of sprues with miniature models.
Just get a 3D printer.
i have multiple 3d printers.. not sure what gives you the impression i'm printer-less
@@WarHammerMan more of a general statement to the audience that a 3D printer is a better investment than a single terrain piece
i ATTEMPTED TO LOOK AT THESE PIECES JUST NOW (APPROX 1 pm mOUNTAIN) AND GOT THE HOME PAGE AND THEN A 503 ERROR FOR THE REST OF THE SITE. :-{ Sorry for caps lock, I told you, I'm old....
