Couple of watercolor pencil tips: They are very handy for travel, you can sketch in pencil and use a waterbrush to wet.. everything in one little bag except for a sketchbook. You can do your sketch then bring it home and wet later. You can also use a spare piece of paper to make a palette (just scribble some spots of pencil on it) and use them exactly like regular watercolor (my favorite way). You can also use them as regular pencils on top of your wetted work, but be sure to allow the page to try completely first so they don't tear the wet surface. Be aware they may or may not be as lightfast as their paint versions so do some testing if you wish to display your work.
Thanks as ever for all your very informative and knowable comments - all very interesting and useful to everyone who reads the comments - it's very much appreciated from me.

I'm new to watercolor painting as of a few months ago.......this video has really been helpful to me. And I am creating a library of your tutorials and will be trying many of them! Thank you so much!
I bought the van Gogh pocket box with the intention of removing the pans and using the box for a travel palette for my own paints. The van Gogh paint was so good that I used it as it was.

I was gifted a large set of Holbein tubes, and i have to say that i love them. Beautiful colours, and they seem to flow better than some of my other paints.

I ordered your book from Amazon and received it yesterday. It's excellent. I've been painting for over 5 years but sometimes I find myself stuck. I'm going to work through your book and I'm sure I'll love every minute of it! Thank you for all your online teachings. I really enjoy watching these.
Personally, I love watercolour pencils and pastels because they're handy and it's easy to make little paintings and details with them. I mostly use Faber-Castell Dürer, but I also have Kohinoor, Caran D'Ache and Lyra. Caran D'Ache was my first pro pencil set. I find normal watercolours to be too messy for painting on the go, so I either sketch and finish it at home, or I bring pencils with me. Draw and paint, and then turn it into watercolours at home. Another use I like about them is that is easy to do very fine details, and to keep colour in one place or line. I hate it when it spreads out in a direction I don't want it to go. I don't use them "instead of" but with the rest of my watercolours, depending on what I want and where I am. As for brands, I don't know 70% of the brands you mention. I'm in Europe with occasional trips to UK, so I'm better acquainted with European or British brands. I love White Nights though they don't have many colours, and I'm still considering buying Sennelier but they're very expensive and I'm sure it's worth it. I do have Sennelier pastels and they're some of the best in my collection. Specially old pastels.
Thank for the informative video. I use Holbeins watercolour and their're vibrant and transparent, good quality. You are a great artist, but you could be a great actor too. Cheers🥂.
Great video as usual, thank you Paul!. I've only worked with Cotman, Van Gogh and this year started with White Nights. it is a very good and very frank video , very educative.......i am from India....and 78 years.....i chased after every brand that my favorite artists use in you tube tutorials.......your video enlightened me much...thank you.......
Thanks for the run-down of what you like and why. I'm a newer painter but M. Graham is just wonderful in my book. My question is about what the different chemicals in paint do. Why quinacridones? Or cadmiums, cobalts, etc. Maybe silly, but this enquiring mind would love to know from an artist's perspective. Thanks!
Pigments are extremely important to understand in watercolor. They ARE the paint, everything else is just binder. Every aspect of that paint.. hue, transparency, granulation, mixing properties.. it's all down to the pigment. Good resources are Jane Blundell and a website called Handprint. Handprint is a bit out of date but the sheer amount of information there is amazing and the vast majority of pigments are quite old so the info is still accurate.
I thought I would go ahead and give the qualities of the pigments you mentioned. Quins are transparent, staining, and vibrant... they are typically pink, red, violet, and orange. Cadmiums and cobalts are toxic (don't put them in your mouth and don't pour rinse water in public drainage), semi/opaque. Cobalts are granulating. Cadmiums are yellow, orange, red... cobalts are blue and green.
I was lucky enough to have had wonderful art instructors. My favorite once told me, "Use the very best tools/equipment (paints/paper) that you can afford at the time." As my buying power increased, so did the quality of my supplies and I am always amazed at my paintings with QOR, Davinci, Daniel Smith, etc. I, too, would not be able to pick just one brand. Now I will have to look up some new toys. Thank you for your amazing videos.
Hey Paul I know this video was posted a good while ago but thank you for such great advice. I had a tube of van gogh cobalt blue delivered today and the difference is remarkable. I didn't realise how little I needed on my pallet and got blue everywhere due to being used to scrubbing away at cotman pans for the last couple of years. I bought your book a few days ago too and am steadily working through it. I have to say it was well worth the investment! There was I trying to paint at speed along with your videos and making a mess. I have such a poor memory due to a brain injury that watching first and then painting can't work for me, making your book a brilliant way for me to learn at a snails pace 😀 of course it didn't cross my mind to slow the video down and put the subtitles on (your voice is hilarious slowed down - no offence intended) I think I will be investing in your brushes soon (I've used cheap brushes for years) unless of course I win the big one and could afford kolinsky sable. I did however buy a budget set of princeton brushes and some 100% cotton paper. Again all thanks to your advice. You are so right about getting the best quality one can afford. So after all of my waffling I guess I'm trying to say that thanks to your valuable advice my painting is improving by the day and my drawing too. I cannot thank you enough for all that you give us with your channel it is fantastic 👏
Wonderful video. Thank you for recommending it. I'm completely amateur. In the 1990's I took a class at a local art gallery and the set I bought was Holbein set of maybe 18. Recently I started messing with WC again and bought various single tubes from Dick Blick and still love holbein. Again I'm just a hobbyist.
Hello Paul, I just started watching your video's, perhaps one month ago. I am an artist and art therapist and work in many media. I always found watercolors to be one of the most demanding mediums and my work with it has never pleased me. Working, so far on one of your tutorials; your techniques for grasses, I have learned so much. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I look forward to practicing your techniques for painting water soon!
I discovered this video, the conclusion of which is humorous, I am a little like you, the same path (without being an artist, but an eternal beginner) having started with Daler Rowney, I remained faithful to it in "Artist" quality now, I arrive (almost) to do with what I want in the mixtures. But very little distributed in france alas On the other hand recently I discovered the same small set Van Gogh at low price, it is amazing for watercolor "beginner", the power of colors. Thank you for your sincerity
Paul, literally you are a great teacher. I gather much experience and learn so many things about watercolor from your every Wednesday tutorial A heartfelt thanks
Started watercolour a few months ago now. I bought the cheapest of the cheapest paint because I first wanted to know for myself if I would enjoy it. I do enjoy it but I never got it as beautiful as the people on your facebook page so I went to look for something better and it was a struggle to find something of which I hoped would be a good one so I ordered the Van Gogh pocket box today (will be delivered tomorrow) Tonight I see this clip of yours and I see that I have made the best choice for my paint for now. I haven't see all clips of you yet but I think they're all fantastic.
Good to know about Van Gogh and Renesans. I have Daniel Smith, Schminke, and Maimeri Blu. And one I have and love using is A Gallo from Italy. Luscious, delicious paints.
I just happened upon your videos and I’m beyond thrilled that I did. I just started painting at 75 and although I’ve always admired others art, I had no idea I could even draw or paint. What a gift to discover! The video, Everything about watercolor paints was SO informative, answering so very many questions I had. Thank you, thank you and thank you again for producing these excellent videos. Looking forward to watching and learning.
You always leave us with a little chuckle. I do want to say that I did get the Van Gogh travel box and have used it alot, but I have to say that I have developed this compulsion of purchasing different brands of paint. Most recently the Daniel Smith pan set and I love it. I currently have seven different sets and love them all. Give me time, I have only been learning watercolors for about one year. I love your show and come back frequently.
Thank you... This was so thorough and so meticulously well-organised... I recently discovered your channel and have been a fan of your videos (and your sense of humour) ever since! Thank you!
hi...bom dias.. good moning my "British teacher"...heheh. Very enlightening your post about the different types of paint... and ways of using the materials. I used a little bit of ecoline talens when I was in architecture school, early 1980's...including the tubes I bought when they were made in Japan, I recovered them, adding wiindsor newton gum arabic...it's working.. some tubes were dry, others sticky, some creamy. I didn't throw them away for sentimental reasons... I like watercolor pencils when I paint birds, because they allow me details and a slower work, with less water. But with each video, we learn a little more, adapting to our personal conditions...
Shminke for me, I do a lot of house portraits it suits my style best, I used to use a lot of the Daler Rowney range as it is what I have always used from a child.
HI Mister Clarke, Interesting, for my part I started with Daler Rowney Aquafine, then now the Artist (unfindable in france, thanks jackson !) while I am an eternal beginner, but after three years, I know them getting to mix them as it should. I was also very surprised by the small Van Gogh box, powerful colors and practical box
White Night, my favorite, St Petersburg or like I bought those aquarelles year 1984 in Leningrad ... and Russian kolinsky brushes of course. Greetings from Finland.
Thank you so much. As a beginner I thank you so much. I have started with cheaper paint . I now will take your advice and use up what I have and replace them with more quality watercolour. The paint available in Australia are more limited. Perhaps Amazon could prove a worthwhile option. Regards from Australia and thanks heaps.
Thank you most in formative as I’ve been working in watercolor awhile and ready to purchase better quality. I been a bit overwhelmed in debating cost vs quality and justifying if I’m making the correct choice .. thank you for your effort. I’ve watched you. Brush video also..
The brands mentioned in this video: 9:47 Winsor and Newton student and professional range 13:35 Student range brands: W&N Cotman, Van Gogh, Aquafine, Reeves (tubes, pans, affordable) 14:18 Artist/Professional range: 14:47 Paul Rubens - China (tubes, pans, good value) 15:32 M.Graham (4*) - US (vibrant, pigmented colours, 70 colours, honey, explosive way of move wet in wet, only tubes) 16:09 Daler Rowney (4*) - UK (high quality, wide range of art materials, 80 colours, pans and tubes) 16:33 Daniel Smith (4*) - US (over 200 colours range, stick, pan and tube, granulating colours, dot chart, pricey in the UK) 17:27 White Nights (4*) Russia (good price, honey, 72 colours, tubes and pans) 18:00 QOR (4*) - US (use their own binder, great for layering and glazing) 18:30 Rembrandt by Royal Talens, Netherlands (4*) (80 colours, pans and tubes, very vibrant, excellent transparency, good price) 18:56 Sennelier, France (4*) = Jackson's own brand (Sennelier also has wide range of art materials, bright and smooth, honey) 19:27 Renesans Intense, Poland (4,5*) (54 colours, pans and tubes, good price, honey) 20:14 Schmincke Horadam, Germany (4,5*) (139 colours, granulating colours, don't get much lighter after drying) 20:52 Winsor and Newton professional - UK (4,5*) (Paul is biased, bright, saturated, flows beautifully, 109 colours, sticks, pans, tubes, dot card) 21:40 Award announcement 23:14 Honorable mentions that Paul haven't tried yet: Roman Szmal, Da Vinci, Maimeri Blu, Mission Gold, Holbein, Shinhan (PWC)
Your shirt top with the paint tube cracked me up; you must have had so much fun with the awards section. ha! Thanks for the chuckles. I am thrilled that you went through all the paint brands you trialed - tried and true in time - I would never have been able to afford more than one full set, so at least it really helps making a decision. I greatly appreciate this video.
As always a good laugh and a great shirt! Good review of products too. I am a paint ummm naughty lady of the night and have soooo many tubes and different brands ALWAYS looking for that PERFECT colour in one brand of the same name. BUT I have found what suits ME and the way I paint needs to ignore the brand and enjoy the pigments that come out and how they work together. I have only once tube of such inked but might go explore their range now… less colour shift.. I like that! Holbein is supposed to be like that too, but I have not noticed it. I fall back to Winsor Newton too. Familiar and used them a long time. Their French ultramarine blue is amazing… thanks for the video!
RE: Daniel Smith "For those of us in the UK, they can be quite pricey." Yeah, for those of us in Taiwan, they can be quite pricey, too! Not as pricey as Schiminke, though, or even Holbein! I bought two M Graham sets and love them. Although, the Titanium White somehow suffered some severe separation as when I opened the tube, all this liquid sans color came out. I have learned that storing oil tubes cap-side down to keep the oil from spurting out. I wonder if the same holds true with watercolors. Great information, thank you very much!
This was an amazing video, and gave me much to keep for future reference. I am very excited to try some of your recommendations. Thank you so very much!.
Very nice, sincere but difficult video to make . I am a hobby painter in India and I have been using w&n last 50 years and have their series 16 sable hair brushes just like they were new!
I need more Mildred and her man (can't remember his name), both slightly "sauced". This video is so helpful; I watch it over and over. PAINTS!!! This subject drives me crazy (er)! Even now I can't see or feel much difference between WN Professional, Schminke, Holbein, D Smith, M Graham and SAA. I have a few tubes of each; also have sets of Arteza and White Nights. However, only now am I beginning to paint EVERY day. What a revelation! I did buy a few tubes of Master's Touch!! SUCK!!!! Oh, my, I could see and feel a huge difference-horrible paint. Thanks again for this tutorial, and I hope y'all are having fun as well as enjoying being able to resume your classes. J
The MaimeriBlu Paynes grey is a beautiful inky blue-black. I found a starter kit on sale in an art shop on holiday that had magenta lake, ultramarine, cadmium yellow deep, green gold and Paynes and I love them; they are rich and saturated and a joy to use. I used the Paynes in your Northern lights tutorial and I find it superior to W&N as its more transparent and has a more bluey finish.

Thanks for sharing! ... and happy to help!
Hi Paul. Kevin from Free State here again. Your artist and sense of humour 500% +. Great stuff. 😊👍
Thank you kindly Kevin - glad you are enjoying them!
İngilizce bilmediğim halde anlattiklarinizi anliyor olmam sizin başarınız ☀️çok teşekkürederim💕
I feel inspired and excited after watching your excellent videos to begin a painting. Now off to watch the next one with a mug of Yorkshire Gold!
Wonderful! - have fun!
I liked the award ceremony. Good fun.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I discovered this video, the conclusion of which is humorous, I am a little like you, the same path (without being an artist, but an eternal beginner) having started with Daler Rowney, I remained faithful to it in "Artist" quality now, I arrive (almost) to do with what I want in the mixtures. But very little distributed in france alas
On the other hand recently I discovered the same small set Van Gogh at low price, it is amazing for watercolor "beginner", the power of colors.
Thank you for your sincerity
Excellent video. Again!!! You are so funny , playful and fun. A born teacher ! Thank you from Connecticut
Wow, thank you!
Paul, literally you are a great teacher. I gather much experience and learn so many things about watercolor from your every Wednesday tutorial
A heartfelt thanks
Wow, thank you!
I wish i had seen something like this 7 years ago when i started to buy paint like i was going to live forever...thank you.
Happy to help!
As a subscriber from Asia, I really look forward to your review on the Japanese and Korean brands!
I just got my first Kuretake set and am in love with the colours.
Thanks for the tip!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks Kirsten - I'm sure you are going to like the VG paints!
Hehehe, thanks 😂
Here in SA, our lovely Rand is in a rather pickle! Currently a Pound is R22.
Using Cotmans, going to try van Gogh for value 🙌🏻
Good to know about Van Gogh and Renesans. I have Daniel Smith, Schminke, and Maimeri Blu. And one I have and love using is A Gallo from Italy. Luscious, delicious paints.
Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful and a BIG welcome to your watercolour journey ... but be warned ... it's very addictive!
Lol! - yes I agree ... it's all very addictive ... I probably have enough paint to last 3 lifetimes.. but there is always room for one more!
Van Gogh travel set is terrific- great paint. Thanks Paul!
It really is!
You are the best…. Really enjoy all your tutorials so much information.
Lovely to hear - thanks!
Thank you very informative for a newbie - so hard to trust anything adverts say these days so much appreciated! PS love your mug COYI
Thank you... This was so thorough and so meticulously well-organised... I recently discovered your channel and have been a fan of your videos (and your sense of humour) ever since! Thank you!
Awesome, thank you!
So much awesome information....Had no ideal there is such a variety of paint. Loved the humor and actors.
Thanks for providing me with New hobbies
Beginner (and loving it) here! This is so useful, learned so much. thank you!
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much Paul. I didn't realize that my Ecoline watercolors were dye based. No wonder they are so bright. I'm so happy to learn from you.
Glad I could help!
Brilliant teacher and love watching your videos, this watercolor one is great and now I understand whats happening with them.
Thanks so much 😊
Very helpful video! Thank you very much. And as always super fun and funny
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this wonderful informative video….you are such an amazing person….
So nice of you, thanks 😁
Loved the skit! I'm using Holbein at the present time. Great results!
Thanks and must try them out 👍
hi...bom dias.. good moning my "British teacher"...heheh.
Thanks for sharing this!
I just want to say a Big thank you .I learn lot from this video . I always love your wonderful funny videos makes me smile .
I'm so glad Sunita!!
This was a lovely video. Hope you get to try the ones mentioned at the end of the video, including Da Vinci from the US. Thank you!
I’m so happy when you mentioned Winsor & Newton your one of the best. Thank You!
You are so welcome!
Shminke for me, I do a lot of house portraits it suits my style best, I used to use a lot of the Daler Rowney range as it is what I have always used from a child.
It's a great brand!
HI Mister Clarke,
Interesting, for my part I started with Daler Rowney Aquafine, then now the Artist (unfindable in france, thanks jackson !) while I am an eternal beginner, but after three years, I know them getting to mix them as it should. I was also very surprised by the small Van Gogh box, powerful colors and practical box
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for creating such informative and effective videos. I'm learning so much. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, will do!
White Night, my favorite, St Petersburg or like I bought those aquarelles year 1984 in Leningrad ... and Russian kolinsky brushes of course. Greetings from Finland.
Hi Anne - good choice 👍
New to your channel. You are straight forward, full of information and I enjoy the light hearted delivery. Great teacher. Thanks from Australia.
Thanks so much and a BIG welcome!
The sticks are good as you can have a lot of color in one palette and can make spontaneous choices
Glad I could help!
ROFL🤣 @Cecil & Mildred! Brilliant! Everything about your channel is brilliant, really. Thank you!
Thank you kindly
Thank you most in formative as I’ve been working in watercolor awhile and ready to purchase better quality. I been a bit overwhelmed in debating cost vs quality and justifying if I’m making the correct choice .. thank you for your effort. I’ve watched you. Brush video also..
I love Paul Rubens! I started with these. Nice blending.
Thanks for the info!

@@ArtbyPaulClark Thank you for your videos! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for giving detail knowledge about water colour theory.
My pleasure 😊
Great video thanks very much. My favorite part was the end, you guys really make me laugh, so much fun.
Glad you enjoyed it
This was an amazing video, and gave me much to keep for future reference. I am very excited to try some of your recommendations. Thank you so very much!.
You are a great teacher. l am always learning different and interesting, thank you
Happy to hear that!
The one watercolor brand I could use for the rest of my life is Holbein. It’s made in Japan and the quality and colour range are fantastic.
Yes, I need to try them out!
Very nice, sincere but difficult video to make .
I am a hobby painter in India and I have been using w&n last 50 years and have their series 16 sable hair brushes just like they were new!
Thanks for sharing - many thanks!
Thanks for the info!
@@ArtbyPaulClark You are encouraging me to spend lots of money! Had to try the blackberry honey paint!!
Jacksons love me because I can't resist trying something new! At least I'm clocking up plenty of reward points!
Very helpful video indeed! Thank you for sharing your great knowledge.
Have a nice day
My pleasure - thanks for watching! 😊
I plan to rewatch several plus times and try them all. I've already picked up and am using a few from watching other videos you've put out. Thank you so much!!!
My Pleasure Jerri!
I was introduced to Windsor & Newton in my initial foray into watercolours and have used them as my main set since. I have to say that the down side of your paint video makes me want to dash out and buy these amazing new paints as I do like to try out different things (which is probably not a good idea for the bank balance). Thanks for another informative and humorous video.
My pleasure - thanks for sharing!
You are simply brilliant, and I became your totally fan. I'm looking forward next wednesday.
Wow, thank you!
Very informative. Finish the rest of the documentary 🙂. I learned so much.
Thank you! Will do!
This is a wonderful video intro to watercolor painting tools. You earned a subscribed viewer today! I will check out your other videos.
Awesome, thank you!
Also the lovely Rosa Gallery from Ukraine.... available on Amazon. They have a monopigment set as well as other sets. Artist grade and reasonable. Thanks for the reviews
Thanks for sharing!!
Great info Mr. Paul. I upgraded from WN Cotman to professionals after I started watching your videos back in January and I love them too. I may have to get a Van Gogh boxed set though (especially since you taught him everything he knows)! And the Academy Award goes to my favorite couple Cecil and Mildred! Bravo!!
Lol Betty, - Great to hear!
Love this run down and your as previously mentioned, “wicked sense of humor“! Thank you. Now I must go out and spend lots of money.
Have fun! .... you can never have too much art materials!
This is so useful when I visit my local artist shop!
Great to hear!
I am glad that paints from my country (Polish Renesans Intense) are in your top 3. I highly recommend Roman Szmal paints. They are popular among professionals. It's worth a try.
Thanks for the tip - they are next on my list!
This was a video I was looking for!!!! Besides the original shirt I love the information about the watercolor world. I've learned here so many things I didn't know at all!!!! Nice video!!! Love it!!!!
THANK YOU. 🙂
You are so welcome Lourdes!!
