Trees are my favorite subject! That's how I got started in watercolors and I will alway defer to trees if I've been away from painting for a while. Knowing the fundamentals helps too of course - I would recommend picking up a book on the basics of watercolour, I've found them a very valuable tool on my watercolour journey...

I paint every single day and today I must have been feeling very brave because I decided to paint one of your pictures. I didn't have the exact colors you used but I did some mixing and came pretty close. I am absolutely thrilled with how this painting turned out and it has now become my all time favorite as you have become my all time favorite artist! Thank you so much! I used to dip the sponge into the paint but it would dilute the paint. So I had an idea to use the brush to get it onto the sponge and it works so well as it gives me so much more control. Have fun!
Fabulous video! Good trees are tough to paint but now I have a much better idea of how to create them and I love the way your tree trunks are all twisty and bent and much more interesting than just street trunks

Thank you so much - glad you liked the video! I used 100% cotton 300gsm cold press paper (not sure about the size as it was a failed painting that I cut into smaller pieces to reuse for sketching)
I’m learning with watercolors and I see you using a lot of water. I’m scared 😂 my paper always crumples or gets wavy so not sure what kind of watercolor paper to use I guess.
Lots of water can be scary indeed! I use 100% 300 gsm cotton cold press paper (I like paper by Baohong) and it handles tons of water very well. The paper still buckles but it can be flattened later. What kind of paper do you use?
@@jodivanhooser8440 I am not sure if your paper is 100% cotton (I know Canson make different kinds of paper, both cotton and cellulose/wood pulp). Cotton definitely handles the water better than cellulose. I also find that taping the paper to a board with masking tape helps hold it in place when it starts warping under lots of water. I buy blocks of paper (20 sheets stacked together and gummed on the sides) and let my paintings dry completely before separating them from the block with a knife. This reduces the warping quite a bit. Hope this helps!

😢 Good morning I am watching your various vedios on TV and felt that you are using number of colours with different shades please if you would use minimum colours your painting would be more beautiful I hope you wouldn't get angry on me Here in India only Camille colours are available and their quality is very superior secondly they don't manufacture so many colours too
I feel very grateful that I have access to many, many different paints of amazing quality, and I love discovering all those colours. They are different approaches to using colour, and using limited palette is not the only way to paint. I am actually a big fan of "unlimited" palette. If you choose to continue watching my videos, you will notice that there are some where I used two colours only, and some where I used over ten different colours, and I love the results either way. And I am not sharing my videos here to seek anyone's approval as I do not need it, I am simply sharing my love for watercolour and my favourite techniques 🙂 Have a great day!
Thanks for your reply Yes I agree with you that we are not doing painting for satisfaction of someone Unlike me you can get number of different shades in one colour and if you like to use them it's really great thing Perhaps it's my wrong mentality to use limited colours perhaps it's coz of some artist here or I have a book "Vibrant Water Colour " written by Hazel Soal a UK based Artist There are only limited shades are available in India even I can't get Crimzon Alizarin a cool Red and I am making it by mixing Red and Purple Anyhow I am sorry for writing you if I would be at your place certainly use different shades I am lucky for your vedios and if they would be available 8 yrs before my paintings would be superior than now
One more suggestion please wander in nearby Nature and try to observe There's no great teacher than Nature and instead of imaginary painting you try to paint real ones But don't be slave to scene coz we can't copy Nature and there are number of things in a particular scene leaving all unwanted things try to ask yourself that what makes me or an an inspiration behind to painting and that is a focus of your painting No doubt you are really great artist and I am trying to learn from you too but sometimes someone even a child suggest us we have to listen My grand son was telling me what's wrong or what should be There's a difference between artist's view and other ones view apart from age or artist or non artist

I constantly observe nature and I learn from it always, and I also trust my hand that is holding the brush, and I paint in the way that is coming from deep inside my heart. I am not a realist painter and I dot strive to be one. I think the most wonderful thing that we realise at some point of our artistic journey is that we are completely free to paint the way we want to paint instead of the way we are told we "should" be painting. Only once we realise this, we can create authentic, honest work.
