Some people just have a natural gift for teaching. You are one of those people! So insightful and you always manage to find such simple ways to explain complicated things. It makes learning about soap making so much less daunting. Thank you Elly!
Elly, great video. When I created SoapCalc the 38% 'Water as % of Oils' was selected as default for the safety of new soapmakers; less chance of volcanos and batch freezups. I no longer own SoapCalc having sold it quite some time ago. However it is still functioning just as I made it. All the Best to you.
Hi Kenneth, great to see your comment. I love Soap Calc but the page has so many ads on it now it's frustrating to use. The 38% water is fine for some situations, but I think a bit too high for most recipes. I respect your work though!
Whaaaat! I can't believe you made soapcalc. Boy do I have a lot to say and ask you. While I do know how to code and program websites I also make soap so that gave me a background to make my own lye calculator. I was actually dissatisfied with soapcalc not having the ability to enter my own value for a particular oil. For instance, different types of shea butter have different values and is not always the same. Why didn't you allow a user input for this? Also, bar size can easily be determined by adding a text box for the amount of bars to be made which is a huge help to soap makers. I've added this ability to mine and it calculates right on the money. How the heck did you calculate soap qualities and could you please point me in that direction. My lye calculator does everything a 100$ program does except for soap qualities and I offer it for a fraction of the cost. BTW, did you have anything to do with the WSP lye calculator. It looks exactly like yours except without the ads. I actually have many more suggestions to make it better. I spent a lot of time making mine and from another programmers point of view I have a lot of suggestions.

Thank you for this video. My mom was old school and made soap from old grease. She was from southern USA and never measured anything in her life because she was illiterate but had committed to memory all that she knew. She was a fantastic, old school cook and made brown soap that was good for cleaning. Poor mama. She knew nothing about lining a mold but her her soap was quite good. I am self taught from an outdated book with erroneous information and TH-cam videos. I am proud to say my soap is better than mama's and prettier too. Thank you for this video. I have a recipe that calls for Distilled Water = 2 x NaOH ( 33% Lye Solution) Even after watching I can't figure out what she means! Absolutely love your videos. You are my go to solution.
Hi Trish, I'm pretty sure she just means a 2 : 1 water to lye ratio, which equates to about a 33% lye concentration lye solution. So you get your lye amount, then double that weight for the water :)

I use a 33% lye concentration, but I have to bump the lye with the addition of citric acid to help with our hard water in our area. And I learned this from you 💕. Thanks for your excellent tutorials Elly
Elly, this was fantastic! Yes, I have heard all of these terms, interchanged, and my eyes would glaze over my head. I finally got the "how to lower my water percentage" but you explained this brilliantly! Thank you, so much. I have learned so much with your videos and enjoy them immensely!
My first soap came out excellent using your lye concentration calculation method. I now stick to 40% lye concentration. Thanks for these awesome videos.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Hi Elly! When I say I stick to 40% lye concentration, they said "the recipe has very high water content". Why is this so? Can you please define each of the method. I might have missed in the video and i think I have to view it again and again and again:) Thank you.
Hey Elly! Hope you’re doing well. Thank you so much for this video which I finally got around to watching in full. You’re such a clever duck! Thanks a lot for this wonderful explanation now i understand it better, Since long time i followed your recipe 40% lye concentration and since that time I'm getting great results.. you are the best thanks again for your help.
When I watched this video about a month ago, I had all the ingredients to make my first batch of homemade 100% olive oil w/ Act. Charcoal and Turmeric soap (500g), used soap calc and I couldn't find anything about lye concentration. Only safety tips. Up to the ears in safety. Not discounting safety in anyway, but WHEN I saw this video, I instantly subscribed . I went into my basement and started a batch. This video really put the ball in the court for me. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I think my first batch turned out very well. It's not lye heavy! It hardened, (harder than I thought the calc made it out to be) it lathers and it's soothing.
Omg your are an awesome teacher! Best instructional videos ever! You should consider publishing a book with some of your recipes, I would totally buy as a great soap making reference. Thank you for sharing.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Also your videos are quite insightful. I am often frustrated by watching other channels which are low on helpful info and high on personality.
See? Pushed the wrong button. I found your videos a couple days ago and absolutely love your presentation. Have been bingeing in preparation of getting back into soap making. Thank you for your simple yet concise instructions.
Thank you so much for making this video this made it a lot more easier for me to understand because it is so confusing with the lingo a lot of other people use
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Yes, that's what I mean. Water as % of Oils. I do cold processed. Everything at room temperature. Never used the Lye concentration or the Water: Lye Ratio on soap calc.
Thank you very much Elly! I am just a beginner in soap making and I think I will learn alot from you 😊 Oh ! Btw you are a great teacher ,you explain it clearly but I'm still kinda confuse but don't worry it's just me being me haha I'll just watch it again to understand it very well
THANK YOU . I did a search on YT just to luckily find your video! You have removed all my stress bc i certainly was confused by tve term Lye concentration. Amazing clear explanation . ❤❤
I was thinking the same as Khati. You should write a book. You have the gift of explaining the soap process very easy and in a way that makes senses. Thank you so much .
Excellent description! I'm very relieved to finally get this. Your other video will fill in the gap about how to decide how much water I should have in my recipes. Thank you!!!
Thank you Elly for clarifying , I always thought the lye concentration is about lye. I used the water ratio from 2:1, 1.5:1 or some times 1:1 and I found easier to do that. Thanks again for great video.
Thank you for such an informative lesson, this is where I was confused a bit and you have made it so very clear. Thanks a ton, your explanation skills are very clear 👍🏻❤
What is High Lye C means to the soap? How does it affect to the final soaps when the lye C is 30% vs 40%? More leather or less to the soap? Obviously when it's a 30% lye concentration has more water so it takes longer to cure but I am curious about leather to the soap? besides using certain kind of oils. Perfect timing for your video to show up.....Thanks so much Elly!! Especially, for the salt soaps...
No - this video has nothing to do with the amount of lye in a soap recipe - the amount of lye completely depends on the oils used, and the superfat amount in the soap recipe. You don't get to choose the amount of lye for your recipe - the calculator does that for you! :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I completely understand what you are saying now. Thanks!! I have been making sea salt soaps only nowwadays. Soooo soothing to the skin, 30% lye C, 20% super fat and 50% sea salt. Better suggestions?
@@KrsitieSimplyBlessed leather is a preserved animal skin, you may make boots, shoes or jackets from it. LAther is the suds and bubbles from using soap. Spelling counts! As does pronunciation. So keep it in mind that saying LAther vs. Leather is actually a HUGE difference!

Thank you for your videos. I am starting to prepare for my first soap making experience. I'm a chemist so I fully understand what you are saying. But it was confusing from a prior video so thanks for the explanation.
Hi. Thank u so so much ☺🙏Im a newbie and believe me I always get confused between those 3 TERMS. No doubt, you have explained those terms so well that none of anybody has ever explained on utube and in their books. Here is my humble request if you kindly make a video on how to prevent acceleration from EO/FO and how to keep a good scent in the soaps as normally it fades away after insulation period. Thank u so much in advance. God Bless U always 🙏💕

okay... i watched twice your video.. and I was playing around with soapcalc : now i understand so much... just change my recipe to 2:1 lye concentrations. / Water:Lye Ratio - thank you so much... :) regards
Hi Elly! I am still crashing around on my Soapy journey-- Made my first hot process yesterday- Crumbles - I will shred it and use as a "new soap Sprinkle" (haha) I know it was my recipe- I know i have a lot to learn/invent.... but i wanted to tell you how much your teaching (caring about us all on our journey) means to me - past, present - soap and sourdough!!! ** thank you for all you do!!!! Connie
I've come back to this video again as I was confusing myself. My misunderstanding which has now been cleared up was that the lower the lye concentration, the less water there was in the soap. Some kinda wierd logic in there. I've made 3 different batches so far with different concentrations to test for hardness as I'm still new to soap making and experimenting with variations on a recipe. This explains why my first soaps at 27% and 33% concentration were softer than my soap at 40%. No wonder they are taking longer to cure. I've been looking closer at the numbers on soapcalc.net and now I see the higher the Lye concentration, the less water is required. I should have paid more attention previously instead of concentrating purely on the weights of my ingredients. Thanks for a great video to help us new soap makers by clearing up the confusion.
OMGEEEEEEEE, thank you for clearing that up. I was thinking, the phrase like concentration meant that it was the amount of lie that was going into the soap. I have seen your other video and it was very helpful. That's where I got the assumption that like concentration meant the amount of Lye used. This back up video has really blown my mind and clear things up. As per your last video I have been doing a lot of research on soap making and whenever I'm doing any comparison you are my go-to person. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and maybe you should think about writing a book. I will definitely buy your books.
Thank you, for sharing this! I prefer using the lye concentration, and formulating my recipes from scratch without a soap calculator. I heard when using the "water as percentage of oils" can very with trace and cure time ,especially with different oils even though you are using the same amount of water for each recipe.
I hope your (no problems though) not using the same amount for each recipe. You can have two different recipes with completely different oils that amount to the same amount of oil BUT because of the different oils your water amount will change as the lye amounts are different.
SO HELPFUL! Thank you so much for your content. I followed a recipe and made my own soap.. but the PH level is so high! Then I bought some soap from the farmers market and it was almost as high as the soap I had freshly made! My partner and I both had skin reactions! So wild. Anyways, I think this field needs a lot of education. I appreciate you and hope that I can contribute safe soaps to my family and the market with your help (:

Since long time i followed your recipe 40% lye concentration and since that time I'm getting great results.. you are the best thanks again for your help.
Thanks so much Dania, you're very welcome. Glad it was helpful :)
Thank you for this very informative video, Elly. Stay safe!
Thank you! You too!
Maggie. Thank you!! That's so wonderful. I'm very pleased for you, and so appreicative of your support. That's really made my day :)
Omg your are an awesome teacher! Best instructional videos ever! You should consider publishing a book with some of your recipes, I would totally buy as a great soap making reference. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Maggie, yes I will be publishing some soap making guides in 2021 :)
Elly's Everyday That's fantastic! Best of luck & let us know so we can support 🤗
Wonderful! Thanks Maggie, I'll definitely be posting updates as things develop. Got some exciting news to share soon!
I love you Elly. You are a pure soul.
Love from India ...... Keep going
Ty for your thoroughness, and helpfulness. You seem so genuine. I feel like I'm watching a friend. Subscribed!
Oh thank you Candice! That's very kind. I do feel quite a connection to the community of viewers on my channel. You're all so nice to me! :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Also your videos are quite insightful. I am often frustrated by watching other channels which are low on helpful info and high on personality.
Thank you, that's a great compliment. I agree 100%!
See? Pushed the wrong button.
I found your videos a couple days ago and absolutely love your presentation. Have been bingeing in preparation of getting back into soap making.
Thank you for your simple yet concise instructions.
Wow! I have such a better understanding of this now, thank you so much!! You have really done a good job of explaining.
Thank you, I'm happy to help :)
Thank you so much for making this video this made it a lot more easier for me to understand because it is so confusing with the lingo a lot of other people use
I now finally understand this! 🤦🏽 Thank you so much @Elly! 💐🙏🏼😁
You're welcome :)
I am happy that you made this video. It is appreciated. Hands down the best.
Thank you Kelly!
You're welcome. I've doing 33%-38% water. I'm going to try 30% to see if my bar is harder faster.
Do you mean water as percentage of oil amount? Depending on which method you're using this could make a softer or harder soap!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Yes, that's what I mean. Water as % of Oils. I do cold processed. Everything at room temperature. Never used the Lye concentration or the Water: Lye Ratio on soap calc.
I think you explained this so well I wish I had these videos when I first started soap making! Haha thank you
Hello Elly , you are a wonderful teacher. I finally understand the three different ways to calculate water in soap. Thank you.
You are very welcome Sardou, thank you!
Thank you for your lessons. I really love the instructions in your videos. 🤔😁
Thank you Dianne :)
You are great! I love this video. I am a Chemist who just started making my own soap and this is a great video.
Thanks Sam, that's great feedback! Glad you found it helpful. Nice to have a tick of approval from a chemist!
THANK YOU!!!! That clarified that up for me. I'm just starting and was just a tad confused LOL
I was confused until the end then it all fell into place. Your a great teacher. Thank you!
Excellent! Sometimes you have to watch it a few times. It's a confusing topic.
Hello Nicola loder
Thank you very much Elly! I am just a beginner in soap making and I think I will learn alot from you 😊 Oh ! Btw you are a great teacher ,you explain it clearly but I'm still kinda confuse but don't worry it's just me being me haha I'll just watch it again to understand it very well
Thank you, and don't worry - this is still confusing to me too! It's quite a tricky topic, takes a few watches :)
THANK YOU . I did a search on YT just to luckily find your video! You have removed all my stress bc i certainly was confused by tve term Lye concentration. Amazing clear explanation . ❤❤
Thanks! I'm glad you found me :)
I'm so glad i found you! Thank you!
Thanks Chetta, that's lovely!
From Montréal (QC) Canada. Thank you so very much for your help! You are my inspiration for soapmaking. Merci Elly's!
Wonderful! Merci :)
I was thinking the same as Khati. You should write a book. You have the gift of explaining the soap process very easy and in a way that makes senses. Thank you so much .
Thanks so much, I will be writing some guides this year :)
Thank you so much. This is the important thing that other TH-camr did not teach like you do
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Aww elly.. Thank u so much for explaining the other two methods too.. And also thank u for that cute smile.. just made my day 😊❤
Ah thank you Shamila!
Excellent description! I'm very relieved to finally get this. Your other video will fill in the gap about how to decide how much water I should have in my recipes. Thank you!!!
Can you make a wood ash soap recipe? It is really good for removing odors!
I would if I knew how! That may be something for me to research into the future. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank you Elly for clarifying , I always thought the lye concentration is about lye. I used the water ratio from 2:1, 1.5:1 or some times 1:1 and I found easier to do that. Thanks again for great video.
Thanks Amina, you're welcome. Yes it was imporant to clarify!
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 40% lye concentrate is the amount of water? Now i got confused again haha
Thank you for such an informative lesson, this is where I was confused a bit and you have made it so very clear. Thanks a ton, your explanation skills are very clear 👍🏻❤
Oh, that's lovely! I'm glad it helps. :)
Thank you Kristie, the water amount doesn't have any impact on the lather of the soap, it just takes longer to dry out :)
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking hi Elly,, lovely to see you! what about the Lye? High amount of Lye gives better leather?
Yes it makes total sense. You are a great teacher. Thank you
Wooow I can say you really help me in my project, I was totally lost and feel some how to ask my colleague on how to make soap especially the measurement. Thanks so much you answer so many of my questions
You're welcome.
Thank a lot, Elly. You're the best teacher and guider
You are such an amazing teacher, thank you so much
Thank you! You're welcome :)
I am newbie soaper currently using melt and pour process. I think this info will come handy when l'm ready to use this method. Thank you so much for sharing.
You're very welcome. I have many soap making videos for beginners - check out my full playlists when you're ready :)
Thanks, Elly. You are such a good teacher :) yes it makes total sense, and I learn a lot and hopefully I’ll start my first soap making soon. Much appreciated
Thank you, you're very welcome :)
Ivlike the fact that you are left handed, just like me. Very clear lecon, thank you
Your explanations were very helpful for me. Thank you!
You're welcome!
So sweet of You, My Teacher ! The effort you have taken to explain lye concentration is outstanding. Hope someday you will be able to clear the remaining confusion (as you say ). I really have become your fan.❤
Thank you for your videos. I am starting to prepare for my first soap making experience. I'm a chemist so I fully understand what you are saying. But it was confusing from a prior video so thanks for the explanation.
Thanks Kathy, you're welcome.
I’m so happy that I found your page you are a good teacher on soap making
Thank you Britz
Thanks Elly, you have really clarified what a water discount means - another really great informative video
Wonderful! Thanks Frith, glad to help :)
My 1st batch is so cloudy.. This video so good to improve my soap recipe.. Thank you so much 👍
My pleasure 😊
Hi Elly 👋
I was confused a bit, yet when I went to the soap calc and watched the video you did, it clicked for me alot more, yet I am definitely going to be watching this video again and again ❤ you did a wonderful job in explaining honestly about the 3points you presented 🌹 🌹 💐 thank you again so much, keep up the awesome work, big hugs from me in New Zealand 🇳🇿 🤗 ❤
Thanks so much Brenda. Hugs from across the ditch! :)
Excellent video!! informative and precise!! Thank you for taking the time to explain the basics!! Have a nice week and stay safe everyone!!
Thanks, you too!
Fabulous video! I keep coming back to this and you really have helped me understand the water and the lye.
You're welcome!
this is such a clear explanation! and I love your accent!!
You teached me really clearly.. thank you so much. Me from Indonesia❤
okay... i watched twice your video.. and I was playing around with soapcalc : now i understand so much... just change my recipe to 2:1 lye concentrations. / Water:Lye Ratio - thank you so much... :) regards
You're welcome :)
Thank you for clarifying this concept . I love your videos
Thanks so much Edgar, glad the video was helpful for you :)
So well explained, thank you so much! Must be a nice feeling knowing that thousands of people are learning from you (and very appreciative)!
Thank you Joan, it's quite strange actually! But I'm very honoured by all the lovely feedback.
I absolutely understood this Elly! Thank you. My new favourite Teacher :)
Really excellent tutorial over an issue many are confused about. Thumbs up with thanks.
Thank you Iain, I appreciate your feedback!
Hi Elly!
I am still crashing around on my Soapy journey--
Made my first hot process yesterday- Crumbles - I will shred it and use as a "new soap Sprinkle" (haha)
I know it was my recipe- I know i have a lot to learn/invent.... but i wanted to tell you how much your teaching (caring about us all on our journey) means to me - past, present - soap and sourdough!!!
** thank you for all you do!!!! Connie
Ahh, thank you so much Connie! That's so sweet of you to say. I really appreciate that. Soap crumbles!? Oh no! Was there too much lye in the recipe?
This is the video youtube needed.. Thank you for explaining soapcalc / these 3 methods
That's so cool! Thank you. Yes, book on the way next year I hope.
Thank you, for sharing this! I prefer using the lye concentration, and formulating my recipes from scratch without a soap calculator. I heard when using the "water as percentage of oils" can very with trace and cure time ,especially with different oils even though you are using the same amount of water for each recipe.
You're welcome! Yes, you're spot on. I tend to use slightly different water amounts for different recipes. I use a lot more water for HP :)
Thank you, yes it's important that soap is made safely. Check out my videos on pH testing of soap:

wow! third time watching this video today. Beginner soap maker here, I needed this soooo much! thank you
You are so welcome!
This is a good and helpful video. I am new and I feel so much more informed.
I have only just found your channel you and I’m so glad I did! I have struggled with glycerine Rivers ever since I started making soap. I could not understand how to water discount. I’ve seen that exact table on soap calc and could not figure out what to do. My batches are all 30oz of oils... around 1.2 kg end result.
You're welcome Lynne, lowering the water is a great cure for the glycerine rivers :)
Thank you so much for this video! I love going to the school of Elly!!! You are so kind to make these videos to show us how and why, And also to share your soap recipes. It appears so many people appreciate it, and I know I appreciate it very much! God bless you and have a Merry Christmas!
Thank you ML! I appreciate that very much.
Super clear explanation as always! Thank you Elly!
You're welcome! And thanks :)
I newbie soaper and I got this!! Very helpful. Thank you.
Awesome! You're welcome :)
So glad I found this video.... starting to make sense now..,,,, just need to learn how to use the lye calculator
That's great, have you seen my video on using the lye calculator? That explains it th-cam.com/video/AqKxin0q1bM/w-d-xo.html
You are an amazing Queen! Thanks for this valuable knowledge, You inspired me to start my Soap Making business ❤
Wonderful!
Thanks Madam for the lectures, I learnt a lot about about lye concentration and so on. Keep it up.
Thank you Nasiru.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking you are welcome. I wish I am near you to give you the soap I made today from the knowledge I got from you. Once again thank you madam.
