Great video Joanna! This method makes a lot of sense. Can you demonstrate the process of this with the rest of the formula so everyone can understand it. (I’ve been soaping for 24 years. I am not as big as you but I understand the concept.) Others are new so they might need the process next. Thank you for being a blessing to us in the soaping community.
Thank you for this comment. I kinda understand it but not fully. I think the next step would be very helpful. Thank you Joanna for coming back with a vengeance and sharing all you’ve learned.
Hi beauties! I'm unfortunately not going to be able to get to a video about this right away however you can reference a recipe I created for Makesy here: makesy.com/blogs/news/how-to-make-cold-process-soap
Thank you! I do my 50:50 lye water outside because of better air flow. I wear long sleeves, gloves, respirator and a welders mask. I look crazy and the neighbors didn't understand at first. Now they all know and I just wave when they drive by. Glad you are posting videos again and I am so happy for your success.
Coming back to say that masterbatching a 50/50 lye solution has changed my soap making even more then my large melter I masterbatch my oil blend in! Thank you!! Now I can just warm my oils while I measure out my additional water, additives, fragrance and make soap - shaves of hours of waiting for lye solution to cool.
Thanks for your great video. How you use the master batched Lye could be explained well with a real example to help people relate this to their own formulas they are creating. I don’t work in ounces being in the UK, so I was easily confused. I have previously mastered batch a total of 1.5 litres before. It lasted about 1.5 months and stayed in great condition to use. If a recipe is asking for 100 grams of NaOH, I use 200g of the m/b Lye Solution as it is actually 100g Lye and 100g water mix. The rest of the water needed for the recipe, (say 100g as the total water required for the soap is 200g), I add the extra water to the Lye Solution when ready. Or add 100g milk to the soap batch instead. It makes soap making so much easier, more prepped for you process. x
Thank you for this explanation! It makes sense now. Also, this was a great video! The best I've found in explaining and demonstrating the process & application. 😊
FAQ: Can this be used in any type of oil solution? Yes, a 50-50 lye solution can generally be used in various types of oil solutions for soapmaking. The lye solution, also known as lye water or sodium hydroxide solution, is a key ingredient that reacts with oils to create soap through a process called saponification. Different oils have different properties and characteristics, so it's important to choose oils that align with your desired soap qualities. Some common oils used in soapmaking include olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, castor oil, and many others. Each oil contributes different qualities to the soap, such as hardness, lather, moisturizing properties, and more. When formulating your soap recipe, you'll typically determine the specific ratios and types of oils you want to use, and then calculate the amount of lye needed based on those ratios. The 50-50 lye solution can be used to saponify a wide range of oil combinations. However, it's important to note that different oils have different levels of fatty acids, which require varying amounts of lye for saponification. So, the specific amount of lye and water in your 50-50 solution will depend on the oils you're using. It's always recommended to consult a reliable soapmaking resource or a soap calculator to ensure accurate measurements and proportions for your specific recipe.
THANK YOU!!! I'm getting back to soap making and was totally confused on the 50/50 solution. I was definitely over thinking it. You simplified it so much. I saved your video to my favorites.
Please a video that explain the process with the 50/50 lye solution will be great, because i knew in soap making about 3 month that i start making soap, i understand the concept but i’m more visual to understand, love❤❤❤❤❤❤
With a 50/50 solution the soap will be safe within 48 hours but you will want to refer to this video th-cam.com/video/UhD5vgDB98U/w-d-xo.html about R&D to test how long each bar needs to cure. For water you can reference this blog: www.modernsoapmaking.com/blog/lye-solution-in-soapmaking
Thats kinda hard to tell without putting a small batch to test that and the only way to test that is to measure it in grams and record the weight just like you would do a bar of soap while it is curing. Unless she has actually done this she won't know the answer except just guessing. Good question though cause I've noticed my 50/50 batches have attracted moisture and has weakened over time and the only way I figure it out is my next batch is not quite right or just turns out too soft. I actually use bottles that the lye came in to make 50/50. It cuts out all the fumes but the drawback is attracting moisture. One thing she did not mention is that you cannot just pick up any old plastic jug and start mixing 50/50. There are different grades of plastic that cannot stand up to the heat and will melt. They sell airtight polypropylene bottles specifically for moisture control and it can take the heat. That really is the best way to store longterm. I wish I would have put back money a long time ago then I wouldn't need one now.
I have never had my lye longer than 30 days but I recommend referring to the SDS sheet for detailed storage information and what container it can be stored in.
Yes you can do it!!! Makesy makes a super easy cp soap starter kit too that has everything you need to get started including a starter recipe :) makesy.com/products/cold-process-soap-starter-kit?_pos=2&_sid=738881ebf&_ss=r
I'm wondering if the plastic container that stores the 50/50 solution needs to be a certain classification or rating? Or can it be stored in any plastic container that has a secure way to be sealed?
I recommend referring to the safety data sheet of the lye beads you are purchasing from! It needs to be a heavy duty container and that can be fully sealed.
1. Prepare your safety gear: Put on safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing to protect yourself from any potential harm. 2. Gather your ingredients: You'll need lye (sodium hydroxide) and water. Make sure you have accurate measurements for both. 3. Set up your workspace: Find a well-ventilated area with a sturdy table or surface to work on. Ensure you have access to a heat-resistant container for mixing. 4. Weigh the lye: Use a scale to measure the appropriate amount of lye according to your recipe. Let's say you want to make an 8-ounce solution, so you'll measure 4 ounces of lye. 5. Weigh the water: Similarly, measure an equal amount of water. In this case, it will also be 4 ounces. 6. Slowly add lye to water: With your safety gear on, slowly and carefully add the measured lye into the measured water. Stir gently as you add the lye to ensure it dissolves properly. Never pour water into lye, as it can cause a dangerous reaction. 7. Stir until fully dissolved: Continuously stir the mixture until the lye is completely dissolved in the water. This process may take a few minutes. The solution may initially appear cloudy, but it should become clear as you stir. 8. Allow cooling: Once the lye is fully dissolved, let the solution cool down to room temperature. You can leave it undisturbed for some time until it reaches the desired temperature. Remember, safety is of utmost importance when working with lye. Ensure proper ventilation, wear protective gear, and refer to trusted soapmaking resources for detailed instructions. If you're new to soapmaking, it's recommended to consult comprehensive tutorials or seek guidance from experienced soapmakers to ensure a successful and safe process.
Hi! Thank you for your video. I haven't made a cold process soap yet, but I've watched videos for over a year now, and I believe I'm ready to make soap. After watching your video, my question is simple After making the lye solution, how long does it last in the container or I should say, what is the life of the lye solution in the container? Thank you, hope to hear from you 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I used 50/50 for the first time today. When I added the additional water the solution heated up to 140 degrees. I like to soap at about 85. I’m curious if I did something wrong. It doesn’t seem as though I’m really saving any time because I have to wait for it to cool any way.
Congrats on trying this for the first time! The idea of masterbatching is prepping ahead of time so you always have the lye mix on hand. You will need to wait when you make the batch, but then will have it for a long time without having to go through the entire making process each time!
Ĥi Joana, thank you so much, but could you please explain further how to use the 50/50 lye solution kn a recipe i was really confused. More so because i think and work in grams. Do i have to double the amount of the required NaOH and add a third water or...please explain further. you are such a blessing and inspiration, God bless
I recommend referencing this blog and investing in Soap Maker 3 software which will help you calculate everything you need! www.modernsoapmaking.com/blog/lye-solution-in-soapmaking
Here's how you can make a 50-50 lye solution for soapmaking using ounces: 1. Put on safety goggles, gloves, and protective clothing for your safety. 2. Measure an equal amount, by weight, of lye and water. For a 50-50 solution, use an equal weight of lye and water. For example, 2 ounces of lye and 2 ounces of water. 3. Gradually add the lye to the water while stirring gently. Remember, always add the lye to the water, not the other way around. 4. Be cautious as the lye solution can become hot and emit fumes. Work in a well-ventilated area or consider wearing a mask if needed. 5. Stir the mixture until the lye is fully dissolved in the water. Initially, it may appear cloudy, but it should become clear with stirring. 6. Allow the lye solution to cool down to room temperature. This may take some time, so be patient and avoid rushing the process. Always handle lye carefully as it is caustic and can cause burns. Take necessary safety precautions and refer to reliable soapmaking resources or references for more detailed instructions tailored to your specific recipe.
Thank you for breaking down the steps! I like to add citric acid and tussah silk to my lye solution. Is that something that could still be done? Would it be added to the 50/50 solution or after - when the soap batch is being made? Thanks for the help!😊
I’m confused. I am using the Trinity base I purchased from Hobby Lobby. I want to know how much of the 50/50 lye solution to use. Are you saying that if I use 3lb of the Trinity base, then I add 1lb of the 50/50 premix and then addition another 8ounces of any other liquid I want rather it be oils, milk or water?
Hi, I made 50/50 lye solution with just ice and lye and the consistency seems very chunky still like the lye didn’t dissolve. Any ideas on what happened or what I did wrong?
Hi Joanna, I love your videos. They are so inspirational. I have learned some tricks from you. I want to do more batches and that small dough pan is what I need. Please tell me the size of that pan and where I can get it?
Thank you so much for the video! You really have a heart of gold! Could you let us know what type of plastic containers we should be looking for when storing the lyewater? Also I, like a few others, am still confused about how to use the 50/50 lyewater in a recipe. I believe, please tell me if I am wrong, that when making the lyewater you take your recipe and the amount of lye it calls for is what you match with water. Then when you make your recipe, add the amount of plain water you need to match your recipe. Is that right? Thank you again!!
Yes I can, I will also do a video in the future, but the easiest way to explain is the following: You need to know your water / lye ratio and lye discount for this example we are at a 4% lye discount(Suterfat) and we are using 2 parts water to lye ratio. So you are using 8oz lye 16 oz water total is 24 oz. For a 50/50 solution it is 8oz lye 8 oz water made ahead of time. When you make soap for this 5lb recipe you would use 16 oz of the 50/50 lye solution and add additional 8 oz of liquid (water, milk, veggie juice, aloe, ect. ). Hope this helps explains the process. If you need more help please ask.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. You are so cheerful to watch. Question: I add tussah silk and sugar to my lye. Would I still be able to add it to a masterbatch?
Thank you so much for sharing 🫶 Amazing have you back!! 🙌 I just would like to doublecheck if I got it right. Let’s say my formula calls for 32 oz of sodium hydroxide. Do I weight 32 oz of my 50/50 lye solution to make my soap? Thank you so much for all information! 🤗
Hi , I’m new to your channel this is a great idea. I have questions what’s the super fat that you use, and I guess the amount of soap batter whether is a 3 lb or 6 lbs of soap how do I know how much water to add. Thank you so much for sharing.

Good morning ! Joanna thanks you for your videos and information your story is motivational. Question ? Do you think you can make a video about the Trinity Blend ? How to master batch this one ? Which other oils or butters can be add to this blend and how ? Thanks you so much for coming back ! I’m new in the soap making industry . Make my first batch with the makesy kit . I don’t understand making one hot and one with ice then putting them together, I also don’t understand two pounds of oils (?) and the recipe info you were referring to. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and knowledge with us. Please pray for me. Hugz, Tree
One hot and one cold was just to show 2 different ways to make a lye solution. If you make it cold(er), with ice, then 1) less poisonous gasses will form and 2) you have a shorter waiting time before being able to use the lye at room temperature. Joanna showed how to make lye beforehand (masterbatch) so that you always have lye at hand when you want to make soap and don't have to wait for it to have cooled down. Once she had made the 2 amounts, it doesn't matter to add them together because the purpose for the lye is to cool down: both will become at room temperature, and be used at room temperature to make soap.
Thanks for the video, I can prep the 50/50 lye solution but I am still not clear with the application. How much oil should I then weigh to use this 50/50 lye of 16ounces?
Im a new soapmaker and so excited to try the lye solution. Lets say I want to make soap in a 5lb soap mold. How much of that solution do I use? Then the water/
Really good to know. Just to clarify, you put the milk in the emulsified soap batch yes, before adding the Lye Solution, not pouring milk into the master batched pre made Lye? It’s good to be very clear.
I love this information. I am starting a soap business and I have a question about the program you used. I watched your Swirl Soap Lavender Batch of soap making a 34 lb batch of soap. In this video you were using the Soapmaker program. Do you still use that program or do you have another recommendation? I have seen Soapmaker 3 to purchase online but wanted to know if this is outdated or still a viable program. Thank you.
This method seems very logical, but when I do it, the solution is very cloudy. There are still small undissolved sodium hydroxide particles left in the solution. Why isn't it clear and transparent?
Its a one part lye to 2 parts water. The first 42oz is to make they lye solution, the 2nd 42oz of water is to help prevent fast trace and give you workability to blend.
So off I use the 50/50 lye solution the additional liquid will be half the amount of the total amount of the solution? How will it be calculated using soapcal with 33% lye concentration?
Hi Dina! Without knowing your oils and ingredients I'm unable to give you an accurate answer. I recommend putting your information into the Soap Maker 3 Software and referencing this video here: th-cam.com/video/OWuN66XDhQ0/w-d-xo.html
Hi, I have had issues when my lye and oils are not within 120 degrees the soap doesn’t come out right. So one time it started to inflate inside my mold😢 will this lye solution work at room temp?
You will need to adjust your water based on your desired results but yes you can use in any recipe. I recommend getting Soap Maker 3 Software to help you formulate! Your amount of solution will vary based on the oils you use.
Everyone please use a soap calculator when formulating a soap recipe. Everyone measure their soap in different measurements. We have some makers use to ounces, while others use grams. But you need to really understand how to read and formulate a recipe using percentages to fully understand how the oils and lye work to make your soap. How to create a new formula too. If you copy a recipe (formula) from another soap maker IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO RUN THE FORMULA (RECIPE) THROUGH THE SOAP CALCULATOR. (Using caps to get your attention. I’m not yelling at anyone.) Because you can cause harm to anyone if your soap is lye heavy. Or if you put to much fragrance oils, essential oils in the soap formula (recipe). Weather it’s a small batch or a large batch. I was reminded recently never make a product while tired because you can make mistakes. Catch it if you can, or in my case it was a costly mistake because I didn’t measure correctly and could have hurt someone. I chose to throw it away and count it as an expensive loss. And I have been doing this for 24 years. Just passing along knowledge.
@@TheSoapGal Thank you Joanna. You inspire me to be a better business person and give it to God. He will provide. And we need to show the soap community that we are here to help and lift each other up and be helpful. We’re all a work in progress.

You have your 7 oz of sodium hydroxide and you have 14 ounces total water but you’re using only 7 ounces of that water for your 50/50 lye solution Water discount ratio - lye is dictated by the oils and water is dictated by other liquid ingredients and desired trace Full water is 3 parts water, 1 part lye. You can reference this helpful blog for a visual! www.modernsoapmaking.com/blog/lye-solution-in-soapmaking

I recommend referencing this blog and investing in Soap Maker 3 software which will help you calculate everything you need! www.modernsoapmaking.com/blog/lye-solution-in-soapmaking
I have another video coming out soon that goes more in depth on formulating with Soap Maker 3 and 50/50 lye solution
Here's how you can make a 50-50 lye solution for soapmaking using ounces:
What kind of jug do u use? Can I use a 1 gallon bucket?
Yes I can, I will also do a video in the future, but the easiest way to explain is the following:
You need to know your water / lye ratio and lye discount for this example we are at a 4% lye discount(Suterfat) and we are using 2 parts water to lye ratio.
Yes, absolutely
Thank you so much for sharing 🫶 Amazing have you back!! 🙌 I just would like to doublecheck if I got it right. Let’s say my formula calls for 32 oz of sodium hydroxide. Do I weight 32 oz of my 50/50 lye solution to make my soap? Thank you so much for all information! 🤗
32 oz of lye and 32 oz of water for your solution + an additional 32 oz to get a 33% lye solution :)
Hi , I’m new to your channel this is a great idea. I have questions what’s the super fat that you use, and I guess the amount of soap batter whether is a 3 lb or 6 lbs of soap how do I know how much water to add. Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you I love the breathing mask any link for that same one?
Great question! You can get it on Amazon here: www.amazon.com/caKentr-Half-Face-Respirator-Filters/dp/B0B8QC2P72/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3R8GIL5S1064L&keywords=pink+ventilator+mask&qid=1696625740&sprefix=pink+ventilator+mask%2Caps%2C145&sr=8-2
So for how long we can keep the 50/50 lye solution like this? For how long does it stay hot?
Hi Joanna! Thank you for the video!
Do you reheat or keep the lye heated? In a lye tank or do you keep it at room temp?
She keeps it at room temperature. You shouldn’t reheat lye.
It remains at room temp. Do not reheat your lye!
And with your video . Thank you so much !
Thanks so much!! I'll make sure I talk about the Trinity blend in an upcoming video!
Thanks! Wishing you many blessings!
Thanks so much for this video. Ive always had an issue with the 50/50 thing!😂 can i ask where you got your respirator?
So glad you found it helpful!! You can get a good respirator on Amazon www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y2S71T1?SubscriptionId=AKIAIBX4MGJBG42TO3NQ&tag=productsbestrv145944-20&asc_source=google&asc_campaign=04097&asc_refurl=https%3A%2F%2Fbestreviews.com%2Fbest-chemical-mask-respirator&cid=04
Galaxia has answered this below! Thank you @galaxia709 and the 2 lbs of oils is referring to the amount needed for a 5lb loaf mold.
@@TheSoapGal Thanks, Joanna!
I purchased 50 percent of NAOH
HOW MUCH WATER SHOULD I ADD?
Is a 4%superfat ok for the 50/50
Thanks for the video, I can prep the 50/50 lye solution but I am still not clear with the application. How much oil should I then weigh to use this 50/50 lye of 16ounces?
You will want to plug your recipe in to Soap Maker 3 to confirm because your lye ratio will vary based on the oils you are using.
I wish I could do this with heat transfer. I batch the oils and butters instead of the lye/water
Im a new soapmaker and so excited to try the lye solution. Lets say I want to make soap in a 5lb soap mold. How much of that solution do I use? Then the water/
14 ounces lye and 7 ounces of liquid :)
The best part about a strong lye solution is that you can add milks into the soap mixture without having to freeze it first. 🎉
Really good to know. Just to clarify, you put the milk in the emulsified soap batch yes, before adding the Lye Solution, not pouring milk into the master batched pre made Lye? It’s good to be very clear.
@@Soul.7if you put milk in your pre-made lye base, it’ll curdle and start saponifying because of the fats in your milk.
@@Soul.7 You put the milk in the room temperature oils that you will be using.
Thay happened to me...😂Looked like cocoa butter!!😂@@SpooksAndSpanks
I love this information. I am starting a soap business and I have a question about the program you used. I watched your Swirl Soap Lavender Batch of soap making a 34 lb batch of soap. In this video you were using the Soapmaker program. Do you still use that program or do you have another recommendation? I have seen Soapmaker 3 to purchase online but wanted to know if this is outdated or still a viable program. Thank you.
I still love Soap Maker 3 I still use it daily
@@TheSoapGal Thank you so much!!! I purchased it! I like it!!!!
Is sodium hydroxide pearls or sodium hydroxide powder better?
This method seems very logical, but when I do it, the solution is very cloudy. There are still small undissolved sodium hydroxide particles left in the solution. Why isn't it clear and transparent?
Can I master batch potassium hydroxide the same as sodium hydroxide?
We are unfamiliar with using Potassium Hydroxide! We recommend asking Jackie Thompson with Liquid Soapmaking
@@TheSoapGal thank you so much!
If I needed a 42grams lye and 42grams water being 50/50 how much premixed lye solution should I add when I make a soap is it 42grams or 84 grams?
Its a one part lye to 2 parts water. The first 42oz is to make they lye solution, the 2nd 42oz of water is to help prevent fast trace and give you workability to blend.
How long can the lye solution be stored in that tyoe of bottle? Whats the best temperature to store it at?
I recommend referring to the lye SDS sheet for storage and safety information and best to keep it a cool room temperature!
Thanks for responding
you're wearing the respirator upside down. Was that for a reason, to make it audible?
Hi, I have had issues when my lye and oils are not within 120 degrees the soap doesn’t come out right. So one time it started to inflate inside my mold😢 will this lye solution work at room temp?
Yes :) Room temperature is best!
How long can I keep the 50/50 lye solution for?
And thanks for the information
I would recommend referring to the product MSDS! We use ours so fast we don't typically have it around for longer than 30 days.
confused...can i use this in any recipe without adjusting water will this be a zeeo superfat bar of soap?
Yes absolutely! It's always important to test and do your R&D before giving or selling anything to anyone. Appreciate the reminder!
@@TheSoapGal Thank you Joanna. You inspire me to be a better business person and give it to God. He will provide. And we need to show the soap community that we are here to help and lift each other up and be helpful. We’re all a work in progress.
@@MUSICLOVERGIGGLES Amen!!
How long can the lye solution be stored in the bottle please?
We will cover this in a Live Q+A!
I recommend referring to the lye SDS for safety info and storage info!
so if I am using 12 oz of lye for a recipe I would use 12 of the 50/50 and then another 6oz of more after of liquid of choice.
To verify this you will want to plug in your information in Soap Maker 3 noting that you want to use 50/50 lye solution :) I recommend referencing this video here: th-cam.com/video/OWuN66XDhQ0/w-d-xo.html
Hello Mum God bless u pleaz can u write ingrédients and measurements ??

I really love making soap and other products, have been since 2005. But for the life of me I cant wrap my brain around how to use the 50/50 lye solution. Im good at math but its quite fustrating that I cant get this. I know I will have that aha moment but until then ...🤔
I will cover more about this in a Live Q+A soon! Keep an eye out for the date and time :)
Can someone explain exactly what she meant by 1 part and 7additional oz? How do we know how much lye to add to the oil mixture?
You have your 7 oz of sodium hydroxide and you have 14 ounces total water but you’re using only 7 ounces of that water for your 50/50 lye solution
Water discount ratio - lye is dictated by the oils and water is dictated by other liquid ingredients and desired trace
Full water is 3 parts water, 1 part lye. You can reference this helpful blog for a visual! www.modernsoapmaking.com/blog/lye-solution-in-soapmaking
oh Joanna, its great to see you again. Just like the workshop where you taught me to make my first batch of soap. Queston: Does it matter what type of Container, or certian grade, the 50/50 gets poured and stored in ? Thank you thank you !! such an inspiration.
I recommend referring the SDS for lye to confirm storage and safety info!
How to store the solution?
I would recommend referencing the MSDS for this product you can find a copy on Makesy's website on the listing for the 50/50 solution! makesy.com/?rfsn=7861449.90795b
I just want to point out you are not properly wearing the respirator. I understand you may be doing it so you can talk in the video. If the respirator is not completely over your nose and sealed to you face, it is useless. Thank you though for a great video.
Thank you! Yes, I was concentrated on presenting the information and talking through the respirator was a challenge. As you said, everyone watching should make sure to read the instructions of their respirator thoroughly and makes sure it's secure over the nose and mouth.
Clear face mask please. So close to your face.
Your mask is on upside down.
You are right, you got a sharp eye!! Thank you !!
