    Best video ever. I didn't know why I was doing waiter's serve for long time and you explained it within 3 minutes. How could you realise that? Did you have waiter's serve before? Just amazing.

    In fact you are the only one who has realized that it is not enough to show a perfect detailed technique, since even more important is to find the way to change someones habits stubornly persisting in our brain. You have incorporate the key element; clever drills to ovecome those mental obstacles. I have tried before many other videos from other coaches for "serve" ,with disappointing results.With your approach finaly I am improving rapidly,you gave me THE solutions how to break my wrong serving habits. I am really grateful to you. Stavros Karamaroudis Athens Greece

    Another great video on the complex yet critical 🎾 serve motion, which Sampras correctly said was the most important shot in 🎾. The key takeaway for me in this video was to focus on letting the racquet drop behind the shoulder at the axis of the plane between the thumb and the index finger, rather than dropping my wrist. Dropping the wrist caused the waiter tray for me which led to severe wrist pain. I'm going to try to imbibe this motion little bit every day to create a deep muscle memory. Thanks for the great service you provide to all 🎾 fans and students of the game 🙏

    This is an excellent video. The reason, I assume, as to WHY pronation is necessary, is to generate racquet head speed. You can move the racquet faster if it is on edge, and then turn (pronate) at the last second so you make your serves faster. If you pancake it (waiters serve) then you can't generate the same head speed because wind resistance will stop you.

      Exactly!

    • @knotwilg3596
      @knotwilg3596 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think you are making a logical mistake here. It's not because wind resistance doesn't play a role in throwing, where pronation also happens, that pronation has nothing to do with wind resistance when serving.
      When throwing a ball, pronating is necessary to 1) optimize biomechanics during the throw, as you correctly point out, and 2) release the ball. Without pronation we would either have a good throwing motion but release incorrectly, or we would throw "waiter style" and hamper our joints.
      When serving, the "release stage" is unrestricted because we have a racket that we can turn 360°. We can use the proper arm motion and obey bio-mechanics and still meet the ball square on, if we use a western grip. The problem then really is the wind resistance because we will have the racked move with the blade perpendicular to the direciton.
      Therefore we serve with continental grip, allowing the racket to travel fast, when obeying bio-mechanics, and pronate to meet the ball square on at the last moment. The only remaining problem now is that high frequent pronation may lead to injury.

       It is way simpler than that. Pronation adds forearm acceleration of the racket head on top of the arm shoulder motion acceleration. Therefore is faster.

      Yalcin Sahin Thanks! Bending the knees by itself does nothing BUT driving upwards does get the energy going. ;) What you're saying is quite complex and for players having problems with the waiter's serve it may be too many things at once. Yes, eventually when you put all puzzles toghether, you can see how it all flows together.

    Great video! There's an incredible amount going on with the hand just from the time the racquet comes out of the "back scratcher" position to the middle of the follow through. I think it's going to take me a long time to get all that intricate movement properly synchronized and repeatable without thinking about it. To say nothing of all the other movements related to the serve. I guess there's a reason it's the most important shot in the game!

  • @Smoothways
    @Smoothways 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    here' s someone with tons of experience having put a lot of thought into his work. I join the party in applauding you for your videos. I watched the one how to handle a high bouncing ball. We all know from Rogers dilemna against Rafa this most difficult ball for a single hand bh. But also very possible that Roger too often tries to get on top of the ball and then either gets it short for Rafa to finish him of or not even stay in the ralley and lose the point straight away.
    But back to the serve - I cant wait to check my own serve on the court to see if I tend to do the waiter' s serve and maybe that' s one of the reasons for serving long too often. If I get my first serve right it is quite unreturnable on a semi pro level - hard and into the corner. Of course I dont achieve the speed of a pro but good enough for myself. However I have too many errors and this maybe down to the racket face not being "on the edge". So again many thanks for your lesson and inspirations!

    This is by far the best video on tennis serve that I have seen on youtube.I wish you have also mentioned how to adjust for ball toss. I don't think anyone (even the pros) can toss the ball in the same exact position and on the same exact height. How one should adjust all this pronation and timing when ball toss is a bit inconsistent? Another factor that complicates things for me is the jump. How to time my jump so that I time my swing and pronation correctly? I fear that if I train for pronation while standing on the ground like you show here then it will not train me correctly for when I combine it with a jump and ball toss.

    Tomaz! Terrific video. I had my daughter slow motion video me and I was shocked to see that my racket was coming up in the waiter serve position. Quite depressing. And you are right, it's the muscle memory that is killing me. Back to the drawing board, thanks!!

  • @reuvengeller1445

    Another tip: When holding the racquet with 2-3 fingers try to throw the racquet at the ball with the pronation motion. The tighter you hold the racquet the more you muscle your swing and it will be slower and weaker.

    I catched a very important point in this video on 4th minute. When you open the racket (for edge 2), your palm showing opponent side of you. I missed this point before.
