I am 71 and I have never played so well. I tell my friends it's because of the party hat guy. I never had lessons and I love playing tennis now. My friends aren't listening but I am beating them because of you. I wish I sinew this stuff when I was a kid. I played my 42 year old son for 6 hours today. Just couldn't stop playing. I love learning this game.
Hi Ryan , I’m mani and I’m 17 years old and I’m playing tennis since I was 12 . I always had problems in serve and always disappointed during matches while making a lot of double faults, and after watching this video and practicing for a couple of weeks, I’m now serving way way better and Im so happy. Thanks a lot Ryan ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
There’s an endless supply of videos and video lessons but I’m a believer that you need to kill the clutter - Find something to focus on and adopt the principals. This is an utterly amazing step by step set of serving principals that deserves focus and repetitive practice. I’m going to kill the clutter and make this my serving Bible. Can’t thank you enough for the depth and willingness to truly teach!
I’m not sure how I can thank you; I’ve been playing for some 20 years now. I’ve had some 10-odd coaches over that time. I pay them money and hope they can teach me the serve. And to be fair they do have some ideas. But all this time, none of them picked my grip. Yes, it is continental, but not the way you so unambiguously show it. That alone has made a world of difference. I watched your video over 3 days and today went to serve. I was hitting the back fence! It took a while to get things right and I’ve never heard a pop so loud on my serves. I’m hugely thankful to you and am now intrigued to learn more from you.
You continue to nail the various tennis techniques in all your instructional videos. A coach who fully appreciate what teaching is all about. Continue with your great work!
Probably the most comprehensive tutorial on serve I have seen. Just while practicing the recommended steps, I could already feel the difference. The idea behind snapping your hand when it is hurt was in particular very illustrative and immediately helped me understand pronation. Looking forward to taking this to the courts!
I love watching your videos in half speed to help visualize the proper movements but also because it makes you sound like a happy drunk. Thanks for the insightful and at times amusing content!
Excellent instructions tremondously helped me by keeping the racquet head closed facing down. Thanks to you no more or a lot less waiter serves. Should set up an account so we can donate to the channel.
I got hooked on your advice a year back, that "tennis is a lifting game" comment really struck home ! That helped a lot. I only recently viewed the "hit a perfect serve" video. I have been working with it for 2 weeks, keep returning to it, focus on one step at a time. I'm 79 and have many years of etching into my service motion those mistakes you point out. I am amazed at the progress I'm seeing, correcting each step, one at a time. I was flabbergasted to realize that I WAS changing my grip out of the continental before making contact. Thanks for teaching a very old dog some great new tricks, seven of them....
I am 71 and your lessons have me playing like I have never done before. Today I played singles with my son for 5 hours. I am so excited to get pro help for the first time in my life. I never knew tennis was played this way. I tell my friends to watch the party hat guy. They haven't done that but they wonder why I am playing so well.
I was having trouble with my serve. I save this excellent Video. The instructor was excellent in show and explaining the Serve process. I love this video. Now I have to practice what I saw here. Thank you.
Everytime I watch this video I correct one more mistake in the court. This is such a valuable source. Thank you. I’m really grateful for this resource.
This is a brilliant lesson, as many have said. I'm a 60-yo low-grade suburban competition player, who had some additional lessons a couple of years ago specifically to get more pop on my serve. That coach introduced me to the idea of winding and unwinding, and trying to get a bit of a sling shot action with the elbow and forearm. But I hadn't come across the "knock the party-hat off" action. I tried it this afternoon, and within just a few serves I could feel it working! The improvement in the sling-shot action was pretty well immediate. As an extra benefit, even after a couple of hours of practising it and using it in 2 sets of doubles, I have no soreness at all in my shoulder, which i might have expected on trying a new action. I'm thinking that's at least partly due to a pretty smooth transfer in the direction of the momentum that this action generates. I still have a lot of work to do on the whole chain of events, but this near-immediate success is really rewarding and exciting. With reference to your other similar video, I'm not sure I'll ever get to 100 mph, but I'm sure gonna give it a try!😅 Thank you so much.🙏
Phenomenal. I’ve spent 1 year of testing how to serve and basically I came to all this features as described in video. Oh God... watching this video 1 year back I could save lot of time:)))
@@2MinuteTennis appreciate you highlighted really important points. I passed this through my own experience and they are workable. The best in this video that you describe terminology that you are using together with motions and pointing “how not to proceed”. Lot of couches they do understand terminology not correctly and they explain in a wrong way to their students.
Hi Ryan, its Jordi from Barcelona , Spain. I am 56, #18 of Sapin in my category +55. This is the best explanation I have ever seen in my life on how to hit a perfect server. 49 years playing tennis by the way. THANKS
Learnt a lot from the 7-points. I was surprised that a side-spin serve to the tee your racquet still pronates with the strings facing out to the right. I think I have been lucky to get most of the 7 points in my serve. Consistency of ball toss still eludes me at times. Thank you for a top instructional video Ryan👍
Thank you very much for the great tutorial! I would love to see a slow motion of you doing a serve. So all the steps you mention are clearly visible and maybe easier to copy. Thanks again! Great video to learn how to serve correctly. Greeting from a tiny village in the Netherlands.
Thanks to your technique, my serve has massively improved! I was so frustrated because of my poor serve, but now things have completely changed! A massive thank you from the south of Italy! U r the best!
Never understand so clear why I can't serve. I was so excited and practicing till 3am at home. Also help clear my doubt on why I need to turn the racket when hitting the ball. Very helpful visual on birthday hat! I will share my kid this video. Thank you so much!
The BEST video on Tennis Serving Tutorial I have ever seen. After watching and following the guides my serves improve a lot. It takes me quite a while and with immerse effort to rectify my old mistakes (with only slow progress). Had I come across this video much much earlier I needed not to struggle with my serves. Thank you Mr. 2MinutesTennis.
After YEARS and YEARS and YEARS off tennis...(43 now, played in Primary and Highschool), I am back into tennis. my WORST shot was my serve and it has put me off doing tennis. After watching your Serving video and ball toss video amongst, I can so ALL THE THINGS I was doing wrong. I started today doing your serve, I really liked it. I have a long way to go, but it is SO MUCH BETTER than when I used to guess with my ball toss and swing a fast awkward FLAT racket to smash the ball down and just pray!.. Cheers mate!
I just turned 80 and my serve has become easier to return than I would like. I refuse to attribute this to my 'slowing down' but obviously, my serving racket speed has slowed down. I have taken notes about the fine points of the serve as you explained it and plan to take apart my current serving technique and build it back again BETTER. With improvements in accuracy of hitting my targets, increasing racket speed, and applying sufficient spin, I hope to squeeze out enough refinement to get to the point where my serve will become a weapon instead of a weakness. Your analysis should help considerably. Thanks.
Just came across this beautiful and short video on serve. You have excellently explaned into details rather than long talk. I watched few videos on serve.. but couldn't help me to serve better. Am in love with tennis. I needed to do it right this time with your teachings. You did it right with the birthday hat. 😊
Man, as soon as you described the palm down position as the position you would have for throwing (e.g. a baseball) I got it and saw what I was doing wrong. And I've been playing for a long time. Thank you.
Such a cool, good and professional lesson. You're the best on TH-cam. My son learns so much from your videos, much more that from his lessons on the court! Thanks so much🎉
So well explained, no literature can explain the gratitude I have for you. I struggled so badly and your technique made it so simple. You made my tennis serve.
The pointer about the 3 things (legs pushing off, knocking birthday hat off, tossing arm dropping) happening at the same time is something I haven't heard other coaches mention. What a great tip!
What an amazing person to take the time to fully explain how to properly serve. I went out to party city and gotten a pack of birthday hat. Yes, people in the courts next to mine think I'm crazy... but I don't care. I've been practicing for the past several days and I feel more difference than years of traditional amateur serve practice. I record film to watch myself and also review this film every-time. The more I watch this video the more the details stick. All I can say is thank you from the Big Apple (NYC)!
Hey Ryan. I watched this tutorial before my training in 4-person group yesterdays evening but had a time to watch just first 4 steps, but believe me, as u said even those 4 steps REALLY helped me to improved my serve yesterday. Thank you Sir and greetings from Poland.
THIS was a super good Lesson, The Best Lesson of serving that I have ever has/seen, I wish I would have seen this 25 yrs ago,,,,Keep up the good works, I will share this with my tennis friends,,,,JAS
A great Serve lesson, I have seen many tennis Coaches at TH-cam, but only you are the one who teaches the most details and explanations easily to understand , you make my tennis level up. thank you very much,
Several months ago I saved this video to my personal tennis library and it has really helped improve my serve. It's so informative and I come back to it from time to time. Thank you Ryan; I've got this!
Ryan, your videos are (speaking of "loaded") LOADED with great, insightful stuff!!! I know they say to keep the serve motion "simple", but I'm not convinced that it is (unless you tell me otherwise😉). There are several ingredients (as you have well demonstrated) that have to be there in the kinetic chain to produce a great serve. Keep it coming! I am learning every time I watch your videos and passing it on to my high school players!! Mitch Long, Salt Lake City high school coach
such an incredibly useful video. i've referred back to this several times since it was posted. loooove a long form 2MinuteTennis where you get into a bunch of picky gritty detail.
That's was truly excellent. I have never seen anyone from live coaching to TH-cam break down the serve as thoroughly and subtly as you. Great work! Thank you!
Thank you so much! You have summarized perfectly all that is to know about a top level serve. I'm grateful to having found you! My best wishes! You are a great man and teacher.
Absolutely tremendous video on how to serve correctly... helped me out a bunch... just hope my opponents don't see this video so I can maintain an advantage by having this knowledge.
I am starting as a middle school tennis coach (and high school helper) in the spring and just found your channel. I see many many hours this winter spent watching your videos. Trying to hone my own game, as well as learning techniques to use to teach the kids. The serve seems like a logical place to start.
I am currently learning how to serve thanks to your videos (starting from 0), its the best ive found on youtube by far , the birthday hat trick is pure genius. I just went to practice yesterday for the first time for 2 hours, I am struggling to toss properly ( forgot to use the holding glass trick ) , I assume that with time it will become more natural. At the moment the tossing part takes easily 75% of my focus. I wish I could do the full 7 steps but for now I do the following : I hold my racket with the continental grip ( I make sure everytime that its the correct grip), I place my feets properly, I toss the ball, hit my imaginary birthday hat (to force me to palm down ) and hit the ball. I did see significant improvement within the 2 hours of my training session , by the end I was touching all the balls I tossed properly. Today my right arm is sore :D, looking foward to keep practicing and include more of the checkpoints in the future. Thanks a lot of making these videos.
Such a rare thing to see a rec. player with a good serve. I believe the palm-down and the birthday-hat thing is the counter-intuitive thing that 99% of players miss. Watching my own serve on video, I apparently miss it too… I’m determined to nail this technique! Excellent videos, thanks!
Absolutely, the birthday hat is a total eye-opener for me. I was doing it wrong all the years with no idea why my trophy position felt so wrong. Hopefully I can get this work when I am back on the court.
Your step-by-step puts all the biomechanics together. The first time I have seen the timing on the vertical hop make perfect sense to me! Thanks for this!
I've learned different things just by watching this once. Number one: I was always closing my stance, with my back foot well behind my front foot. I'll now put my back foot closer or more in line with my front foot(skateboard analogy). Number two: I was not coiling my body as my first move! I was simply taking the racket back as I threw the ball in the air. The front of the racket faced the opposite court. With the coiling back of the body, it's much easier to have the racquet facing the side fence or at 3 o'clock for a right-handed player. I know there are more steps than this, but I didn't have it right at the beginning. Also, holding the ball like a glass of water and making sure to toss at one o'clock is helpful. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Ryan for the video. I am watching a handful of tennis trainers on youtube and I really appreciate your videos. I also re-watch your videos after practicing. I wish I had this mind I have now and your videos when I was younger. Anyway, it is good to learn from you all the steps in mastering the technique.
Honestly. The best technical video on serve Ive ever seen on youtube (and there are a lot of them out there). Thank you so much for you effort and please keep it on! Greetings from Germany.

Thx

This is the best instructional video on serving on the internet! Take notes!
Great video, this will allow me to show my son the proper steps and mechanics of a serve, as his school lacks any direction. Thank you
Wow thanks so much Gerardo!
Just Genius . Everybody at every level should see this tutorial. You are a Master of Tennis.
Wow thank you Carlos! I really appreciate your support. Glad the serve videos have cleared up the proper serve technique. Have a great day!
Everytime I watch this video I correct one more mistake in the court. This is such a valuable source. Thank you. I’m really grateful for this resource.

One of THE best serve video I've seen on YT. I especially appreciate the thorough explanation of each check points, what to avoid and why to avoid.
Brilliant; I’m blessed to have found this. Starting the grip…this is gold!

Clear and detailed instruction. It changed my serve with effective result. Thank you very much for the teaching!
So glad the video helped you!!!
Brilliant step by step breakdown of the action 👍
Thank you David!! Appreciate the support. 😊👍🎾
This is literally the best tennis analysis video I have ever seen in my entire life
Great video explaining the tennis serve. I'm buying some birthday hats and practicing today.
Thanks
Excellent coaching. I did learn a lot from this remarkable video and I will surely recommend to my friends.
Thank you so much
I am starting as a middle school tennis coach (and high school helper) in the spring and just found your channel. I see many many hours this winter spent watching your videos. Trying to hone my own game, as well as learning techniques to use to teach the kids.

I am currently learning how to serve thanks to your videos (starting from 0), its the best ive found on youtube by far , the birthday hat trick is pure genius.
I'm 24 and I always have been a football player. Starting in tennis right now and your videos are making me improve a lot! Thank you a lot Ryan!!
Great video serve has always baffled me but now I know the steps to follow. Thanks Ryan
Wow. Best serve video I have seen. Answers so many questions! I can't wait to try tomorrow!
That is the best serve instruction I've ever seen! Thank you! My problem has always been an inconsistent toss.
I appreciate your coaching technique and will practice to improve my service. Thank u

Simply fantastic. The best serve deconstruction I have ever seen. So many good intuitions, can't wait to take this to the court.
