OVA's are so weird. Like it's made in japan, but the dialouge makes it feel like it wasn't suppose to air in Japan. It makes me think that it was made to be localized for people outside of America.
Most OVAs are made as a standalone story for a franchise and the intended country isn't really a thing. The Mega Man OVA is an exception because you could believe it was made for a foreign country or something.

I have it in DVD I think it was trying to educate people on Japanese culture because it kinda feels educational but with a lot of action too

I love the animation in this, so charming, and it looks just like Inafune's artwork. The stories aren't much, but I found them relatively enjoyable, and kind of relaxing. BTW I think this OVA was made for like a company helping English speakers in Japan learn more about Japan. I might be wrong, but I remember someone saying that.

I love this kind of videogame media. From the Sonic OVA to this, feels more faithful to the games than some of the shows in the US.
I feel the same way too. They are like animated representations of videogames, which stay very close to the source material. You can tell a lot of passion went into making it as it is very evident that the animation team are huge fans of the videogames.
Interesting how the dub had Wily and Light’s Ruby Spears voices (Scott McNeil and Jim Byrnes respectively) reprise their roles. Most people do agree they were the best parts of that cartoon so I guess it fits. Speaking of that cartoon, idk if you were aware but there is a pilot/trailer that features similar animation to this series with game accurate designs. Idk if it was the same animators of the animation was convincing enough but for whatever reason they went with the redesigns in the final product.
I'll have to give that a look and finally see the Ruby Spears Mega Man show.
They were good VAs, I prefer their voices to the MM 8 game voice acting. Ruby Spears version Wily and Light voices the ones iconic and seem fitting the characters imo

The cartoon had actors that were pretty prolific in Canadian cartoons and dubs including one of the original Goku voices (Ian James Corlett) as Mega Man himself. The actual cartoon is typical 90s adaptation cheese but I reckon it has its charms. Still a shame with what could have been when you watch the pilot and compare it to the final version.
You see ruby spears mentioned in the opening of the first OVA, so they were involved in its production
From what's my understanding, this was actually dubbed BEFORE the Ruby-Spears cartoon was made, so they weren't actually reprising their roles, rather this was the first time they lent those characters their voices. Despite being dubbed back then, however, it never actually got a public release until many years later.
It's mostly the lack of consistency that gets me. Sometimes Mega Man just whips out Japan knowledge for Rush and it's like. Wow little guy, where'd ya hear that cool fact? Only to not know what a hot spring or something is lmao

I wonder what led to Mega Man being the cultural exchange OVA. Iirc Dr. Light's lab is canonically in North America but I know Rock globe-trots in most games, maybe that was a factor?

He's right about one thing, 90s anime did have a certain charm.
Whenever I see a clip or a screenshot of a 90s anime, I just love the look of it.

Funny thing is, the Ruby-Spears Mega Man series was going to use the same designs from this series, but sadly for whatever reason they changed it.

One thing I always found strange about the various Megaman shows and animations was how little they used the robot masters. Even in the Ruby Spears cartoon they were mostly one note and were lucky to show up more than once. Always seemed like a wasted opportunity.
Huge wasted opportunity. There's enough Robot Masters to work with in the NES/Famicom games.

Honestly, Upon A Star is what I consider to the peak of Mega Man's aesthetic and design, from visuals to sound effects and voice. If there was a game that looked like this, I'd absolutely lose my mind.
I would love a 2D game that looks like Upon a Star.
I'd gladly take this over Ruby Spears any day. Sure, we wouldn't have the meme gold of "NOW I'VE GOT YOUR POWER!" or incompetent Cut Man, but boy, what this series could've become.
I wish we had a series with the designs from this show, but only taking place in the Mega Man/Rockman world.

@@GottaBeFrank This is like one time I was browsing Netflix and saw, of all things, the Hindi English dub of Ninja Hattori-Kun on there. Of all the random shows to find on North American Netflix, I found that one. I don't know if it's still there, but that really caught me off guard.

Honestly, it just felt like a really really basic anime for little kids, whose aim was to use a popular franchise character to teach kids internationally about Japanese culture. And why not use a character with appeal in both countries to do so? Honestly, this is the opposite of "weird." Seems to me like one of the most basic and safe ideas you could possibly make, even.
Yeah, feels like a pseudo educational show using MegaMan. Just a simple special with some basic stuff to "teach" never meant to be a real anime or real plot. So analyzing it is fun but just leads to disappointment.

It's not a show, and you probably already know about it, but just in case:
Archie published a 55 issue Mega Man series based in the game world, written by Ian Flynn from the Sonic comics. It's really good and it fleshes out the world with some "filler" stuff, although they only make it through Mega Man 3 before it gets cancelled. They spent a long time on Sonic crossovers that were pretty cool when we didn't know the book was going to get cancelled, but now feels like it robbed us of some Mega Man stuff.
Still, 9/10, would recommend.
I've looked into it and I might pick up what's available. I don't think I'll do any content on it, but it might be a nice read.
I really don't like how it tries to play up the drama of Robot Masters 'dying' when they never actually do so(neither in the games nor the comics themselves, outside that cancellation ending), but other than that, it's fine. I like the artwork at least. I much prefer Megamix, personally.

The second Sonic vs Megaman crossover feels like a pitch to both companies to get a Sega vs Capcom game made, with Sigma trying to take over the universe so Sonic, Megaman and X gather the various heroes of the Sega and Capcom universes to stop him.
It has the one time i can think of where Megaman and X just casually talk to each other and its nice to see them interacting like the brothers they are.
Tbh when the anime came to the west, my favorite episode is when MegaMan has to team up with X to stop wile and vile with mandrid.
He still looks almost the exact same now as he did all those years ago.
He's gone through some changes, but nothing too big.

Ruby-Spears Mega Man may be weird but it was fun. There's another cartoon while not a Mega Man cartoon by any means features Mega Man as one the main characters. And belive me, you'll have a heart attack looking at his design and hearing his voice.
One thing I find funny about this anime is the fact that everyone doesn't act surprised when they see Mega Man in real life.
Like, if I saw a video character in real life. I would freak the fuck out, these people are chill.

And they accepted him and even took him in like family...yeah it was chill indeed.
Wily took Roll as a hostage? A robot made of metal, and he's all by himself in cramped up space. That should make him an extremely easy target for her to subjugate. Maybe some detail was left out or something.. Like putting just some handcuffs on her shouldn't matter much at all. Maybe the handcuffs also put her energy to a minimum level or something? I dunno.
Maybe as a housekeeper bot she is especially restricted by the Three Laws? Even in the games, the plot/logic is pretty childish and inane though.
@@Ergeniz A housekeeper robot should be very strong though so it can move heavy furniture and objects. Would make no sense for one to not be strong. But yeah, kids cartoon logic, better not overthink it.

@@Ergeniz I did, but for some reason I forgot you mentioned the three laws. But Megaman does capture and stop Wily over and over again, so subjugation is clearly allowed even within the framework. Or at least it makes no sense to not allow for the rest of the robots too to be allowed to subjugate known criminals.
I mean she even offers to help. How is she supposed to help if the three laws prevent her from subjugating the criminal? All in all it's just a cartoon, so what ever.
Dang, that's a blast from the past. Yeah, I've actually seen the English dub on DVD; that was back when Netflix had just started up and was mailing out DVDs. It was a funny romp back then; the edu-dainment nature is pretty blatant and kinda cringe at times, but man it just made me yearn for a show based on the game portions of the OVA. Which....is pretty much what you said. Cool. (I ended up somewhat filling this want by Netflix ordering and watching the 80s and 2000s Astro Boy anime.)
I am also there with you for 90s anime aesthetic feeling nostalgic and just neat. I have a hard time putting my finger on it, it's just cool. The art direction of this OVA is on point and the fight scenes are pretty well animated. I'd just rewatch the opening fights from time to time when I'd think about 'em.
What's really crazy is that the Ruby Spears pitch originally used the art direction of this series, but as we all know, that didn't happen. I know I probably lose my Mega Card for this, but I've never actually seen the Ruby Spears cartoon, so I can't really comment on if that art shift would have helped though.

This wasn't actually supposed to be your conventional anime but a Japanese learning psa sort of thing.

At 7'26 it says it was sponsored by 海外広報協会 the overseas advertising partnership. So yes it was indeed for getting foreigners interested in Japan.
That explains the English dub, though that was about 10 years later. Would that mean the original Japanese version is meant for English speaking foreigners who are already in Japan?

Y'know, this series isn't great; but I'd honestly consider this to be the best animated adaptation of Mega Man (for the classic series, at least). I love how the most faithful rendition of the series is an undisguised tourism ad.

I used to have all 3 episodes downloaded on my phone, I ate this up.
A kid who went to the same after-school childcare as me brought this on DVD maybe once or twice and I just thought it was so cool. I only vaguely knew what Mega Man was (I would've only known him from Marvel vs. Capcom at the time, lol) and I knew next to nothing about Japan so the educational aspect of it really intrigued me. It's not surprising that I would go full weeb not long afterward, lol. I've remembered that this existed, but never bothered to actually look into it so this was definitely a fascinating revisit
Well, the music slapped tho.
It did, though I wished there was more than the same few used throughout the episodes.
with how street fighter also got an educational anime(a quasi-sequel to the animated movie.) makes me wonder how one for the darkstalkers ova's would've went.
loved these ova's with how they were originally a 3 episode pilot for the cartoon( which is why they use the english names/have some of the voice actors for it like dr. light and wily as there was a pilot as well showing the cartoon was originally was going to be in this style which i really wish they kept.) and really loved the visuals,music(especially,how faithful the characters are(favorite being roll beating the daylights out of dr. wily/wily being a good sport waving goodbye at the end.) & having the spirit of the series that i really hope we get a megaman anime in this style as capcom has some good anime.

😆🙂 I remember watching this with a childhood friend, it did have it's fair share of giggles and even a nice watch, probably not the first 90's anime I would reccomend, but it's fine, *think of it for a moment of the other options, like sailor moon, dragonball z, a few others I can't think of right now 😂*
DBZ was the big one for me, since I was more into the american animated shows. Because it was the 90s, it was hard to not find something entertaining.

It's from "Rockman Arrange Version - Rockman Special CD." It was a limited CD for the participants of the Rockman 5 boss design contest and I highly recommend listening to the rest of the remix. It's really good.

Yeah. Made for the target audience. After seeing the pitch for that series, I'm annoyed because the design from that pitch works so well.
The time machine kind of looks like the time skimmer from Mega Man world 2 and from the Archie comics.
It's still a thousand times better than the one we got in the West.
I've never seen it, so I wouldn't know.

Technically, there exists an English version of the opening for episodes 2 & 3 with all credits translated and featuring the classic Megaman logo from the games. Which brings up the question. Did you watch the OVA through a legitimate official DVD or just TH-cam?
I have looked around for an English version of the opening for episodes 2 and 3. Either they do not exist or they're lost. As for how I saw the OVA, I mentioned that the DVDs are impossible to find, so I think the answer is obvious.
@@GottaBeFrank I definitely saw someone's upload of all OVA episodes, each with English credits and logo, here on TH-cam. Maybe those later got taken down. But you can still find the intro for them

@@GottaBeFrank Maybe both Japanese and American DVD releases have both languages to choose but the video itself is probably tied to its target region, so you probably need to get the American release to have the English intro and credits. As for why the Japanese version is more common on TH-cam, I'm guessing the American release is that much harder to get ahold of.

Sort of? He's not a no nonsense hero and there are moments where his personality is allowed to be shown, similar to Sonic.
I love how the characters in this OVA just don't even question the fact that they're videogame characters, like you'd imagine if someone found that out they'd have an existential crisis or something, but nah, Megaman's chill with it and the kid playing the game just doesn't give a shit that he came out of the TV screen and into the real world

I'm normally a sub over dub kinda guy.... but I love Scott McNeil's Wily. Nice callback to the (pretty awful) Ruby Spears cartoon where Wily kinda stole the show imho.
I'm sub over dub if I can't get behind the voice acting in the dubbed version. Wily is definitely a highlight of the OVA.

Honestly, the animation and sound design are incredible for the decade of anime it is from. Too bad the writing was not on the same footing. Feel like they even had a good foundation for his powers. They just needed to have Mega Man have culture shock more at the worldly things not common to him, not so much the environment. If they were really going to lean on that.
Honestly, it is a fun watch, even with these caveats, thanks to the solid action sequences and music. But it could have been a great watch with a better writer. Should have been way more lore involved. Same problems I share with the first Sonic Movie.
