A note regarding input lag on modern displays: The input lag you get from displaying old systems on a modern TV actually comes primarily from the image scaling it has to do to make the picture fit the whole height of the screen. "Game" modes on TVs generally help reduce lag because they disable a lot of the other processing on the image, which normally adds latency. Your TV's game mode can't eliminate the delay entirely for a few reasons: 1) Virtually every LCD/LED display has some inherent latency to the image. This has generally gotten better over time, especially with some newer display tech like OLED. 2) The scaling your TV has to do to make the picture fit the screen will always add at least a little bit of extra delay, especially when working with super low resolutions like 240p (what basically every system before the GC/PS2/XBOX era used by default.) 3) Modern displays handle video signals in a fundamentally different way than old CRT TVs. Those used analog video, and effectively just instantly streamed that data to the screen. A CRT TV doesn't know anything about the signal it's displaying, it just displays it (or attempts to). This is the main reason why CRTs had effectively no latency. Modern TVs use processing chips to convert that analog video signal into a digital signal the TV can actually use, which adds at least a little delay. If you're dead-set on using original hardware on a modern display, you can drastically cut down the latency with gaming focused upscalers like the RetroTINK 2X or OSSC. The RetroTINK 2X is relatively cheap and simple to set up/use compared to other similar devices, but at around $120 USD, it's still not something you're likely to just buy on a whim.
I'd also like to add that because the Anniversary Collection is emulating the games and you are emulating the console, the lag is increased twofold. You are essentially emulating an emulator. Highly suggest you just get a PS2, they are very cheap not to mention extremely easy to mod. A modded ps1/2 with a burned copy of the megaman ports on a crt is the best way to experience the games lag free.
ain't no one goin to jail for emulation. that's like ppl back in the day being scared of mp3s being illegal ppl still did it and today too and no one being jailed
Piracy is all about context. Pirating a really old game that's like £900+? Yeah, that's fair and respectable. Pirating a game that's easily accessible and cheap? That's just bloody stupid.
@@beanut7759 all of that is still legals. lemme say this a law as strong as the mfs enforcing it. these companies know they can't go after ppl directly for owning those roms so next best thing is the sites. also not everyone can just buy physical hardware that aged like booty to play games legally emulation and piracy is the way to go
i mean i really don't care if it's cheap as heck. my money isn't supporting some indie dev it's going to the pocket of some ebay seller or scalper. so i don't buy into the meat riders mindset of fuck emulation its illegal. you better not do it or my papa at Nintendo will jail you
My only major complaint with the Legacy Collection is that they didn't add the Complete Works OST to the games, its reasons like that why I can appreciate the Anniversary Collection a little more. But damn hearing that Grenade Man entry in the anniversary collection gave me PTSD and my ears easily remember that ear gripping explosion sound. X_X;;;
While the sound was inconsistent on 7 and 8, the 8 bit games use separate channels for music and sound effects. This means in 2 and especially 4, the boss music isn't drowned out by the life bar filling up before the fight. Which is a positive
Wow... I can't really describe what a treat this video is to me personally. Used to be so sad I couldn't play anniversary without lag, just assumed that's how it'd be forever. You made this megaman fan's day by letting us know about it being possible nowadays and how to configure it! Thank you so much!
The heavily maligned Gamecube version was I really loved. It had all the 8 megaman games in one place, and it was the very first time I was able to play them. The PS2 extras didn't matter that much to me, and the reversed controls took some time to master, but were ultimately doable. I spent summer of 2004 playing the collection. Felt really good, especially after the insanely traumatizing school year before it.
I love the Anniversary collection. Being able to cycle through your items and weapons with the shoulder buttons makes the game so much smoother to play. The remix songs in navi mode rock, and I loved being able to play Power fighters...particularly the 2nd one. I don't get why all the quality of life choices made in this collection weren't used in future collections.
This collection is hella underrated. This was like one of the first games ive played like *ever*. Like right after pacman java on some old early 2000s phone. If it wasnt for this collection I probably wouldn't have been so much into the series as I am today
As someone who's first memory of this series was renting Megaman 2 on the NES back in the day when I was like 6 or 7, it is mainly for reasons like this that I appreciated collections like this even if they weren't 100% perfect. This came out during the era of the Battle Network series, and at the time I loathed BN because to me MM was supposed to be a sidescrolling action/platformer. Now that I am older and wiser I have come to realize just how important BN was for the MM franchise because it is what kept my favorite franchise of all time at least somewhat relevant to a new generation during the 2000's era. The fact that Anniversary Collection came out during that time meant that a lot of those "BN kids" ended up also being exposed to the classic series of games. I think a similar thing happened with the Sonic franchise where they released collections of old games on PS2/GCN during the era to expose a younger audience playing the "new" games at the time to the older 2D style games. Fast forward to today and I am now very excited for the BN collection so I can finally give a fair shot to the only series of MM games I have yet to experience.
@@skeletankmcgraw7343 I played this collection when I was like 2 or 3 on the gamecube. I remember when i was like 7 and i accidently discovered the interview thing. I saw all the other games and street fighter. I was like so hype to play all of that. And after playing those when i was 11. That was what got me into a lot of capcom games
@@shaftondougall5833 I honestly didn't even know about that Inafune interview because I had the PS2 version. I assume that interview was purposefully on the GCN version to expose a younger audience. I guess because the BN games were Nintendo/GBA exclusive they chose the GCN to have that interview as that is where all the young BN fans were at. Now I need to go find this interview on youtube or somewhere as I am now very curious to see it.
This collection is the reason why I became a fan of the original Mega Man games. Bought the Legacy collection on the Switch and I still found myself going back to the original Collection for the Gamecube.
If it wasn't for this game, I would have never been able to play 1, 5, 6, or 7, nor any of the arcade games. Still wish they came out with the GBA version.
I have this on the PS2 and back on my CRT, I never experienced any lag... What DID annoy me greatly was the removal of the proper credits from 7 and the weird audio glitch that affected the 8 bosses, I am at least 100% certain of Astro Man getting super high pitched.
Anniversary edition was the one I grew up with since the late 2000s. It's a shame that my ps2 doesn't run so well nowadays, since I would always play the Anniversary edition over the legacy edition.
Whats wrong with your PS2? If it's the disc drive giving you issues, you should buy the MC2ISO adapter which lets you play games on SD cards. Though you will also need a memory card with Free Mcboot and OPL BDM4.
That grenade man jumpscare explosion had me rolling I legit forgot about that 😂 I remember playing that stage early in the AM before school. Good timesb
Who says it's bad? I had a blast with it in 2004, sat on my bed, and marathoned all of them. Unfortunately, I also spilled a vanilla milkshake on my bed, and didn't clean it properly, and now I weirdly associate Mega Man with the smell of curdled milk.
When i was a super young kid, i couldn't beat a single stage in any of the main games, but i COULD beat the arcade games because they had infinite retries. Those arcade games having some of the best art and music of the classic series, plus giving you a good run-down of each character's personality, made them absolutely perfect for getting me into the series. They're basically the reason i'm such a huge Mega Man fan to this day.
The ps2 version was my first experience with the classic series, have great memories of playing with my brother and competing to see who could beat more robot masters and working together to get through the games. Great times and cemented my love for this series. Had no clue they were so controversial beyond the Gamecube version's button setup! Hell, to this day I still play the arcade games on my phone emulator, never would've heard of them without this gem.
Having done speedruns of the Anniversary Collection, I can say the input lag of the games is practically nonexistent on a Gamecube. The Complete Works versions are available on the PSVita and PSTV, but those are running PS1 emulators and have some pretty noticeable lag, along with MM8 on the Vita having lag. There is 1 additional bug I am aware of on Anniversary Collection and MM3 Complete Works. If you are in a slide while the first Doc Robot dies in a revisit stage, MegaMan's sliding speed will be conserved. This makes the infamous NeedleMan-RushJet segment trivial because now Rush Jet travels at sliding speed. Thanks for the video. Great to see someone else appreciates the MMAC.
As a gamecube owner, after being an 80's kid, this release is easily in my top 3 disappointments. I just absolutely couldn't forgive the A B swap with no way to fix it. Eventually I realized there was a PS2 to GC controller adaptor that allowed for swapping the buttons. Also, you said GC doesn't have the remixed music? I thought it did. I mean I recall MM1-3 only remixed HALF the stage tracks, but maybe I am misremembering because I already had those Complete Works albums downloaded before this release... Anyway, thanks for your work here. Learned a lot about the hitbox issues. You're the real Mega.
Part of the issue with the collection and input lag is related to the fact that the games run at interlaced (480i) resolution compared to 240p output on the Complete Works. Having a modern TV that can display 240p can be hit or miss, though 480i is usually compatible at the expense of the TV's deinterlacing requiring video processing and thus generating input lag, as you said in the video. The one disadvantage in 480i output is that it will cause the image to have some flicker and no scanlines whereas the PS1 versions would have no flicker and have scanlines. If I'm remembering right not even GSM mode selector works with the Anniversary Collection so we're stuck with 480p or some decent emulation options. Still a really good way to play the first six games with enhanced features, that's for sure.
Mega Man Anniversary Collection was my childhood and I'm glad someone reviewed it. I had the gamecube copy and since it was my first time playing Mega Man I didn't know the jump and shoot buttons were swapped. Imagine my shock when I started playing the games on the 3DS Virtual Console and thinking that something was wrong with the controls, or how the NES versions have lots of sprite flickering.
It's really nice to see someone give a nice spotlight to this old mega man collection from way back when. I'm definitely surprised you didn't comment on just how ugly some of the ui this collection has, it comes off similarly to an early 2000's game maker title with it's akward placing of character artwork on menus or 1-3 having dithering on the weapon number amount but not on...4-6, with an ugly green no less. Nice video all things considered, the weapon quick switching alone makes this notable to any avid mega man fans I think.
The Legacy collection annoys the heck out of me, they clearly went through a lot of effort to get these games running BETTER than the NES, removing a lot of the issues the limitations the system had, same with the X collection. Instead of working to improve and port the Anniversary Collections to modern platforms they ... Put the flawed older releases out. They can't even say that it's a cost issue because they went out of their way with the Zero collection where they added in checkpoints, superior audio samples for the music and then got the freakin' HD versions of the FMVs for ZX. I don't get what they were doing
Outstanding attention to detail and thorough examination of the ports. Those were my favorite ports of the classic games too and I do believe I learned a lot of small tips from them in one way or another. I can see the work that went behind these past 2 videos about the collection and I've got to respect the commitment and effort. Keep up the good work.
I found out maybe a day or two before I would be receiving the Gamecube version of the game that the controls were swapped, thanks to a review that X-Play did for the game. Back then, very few people touched upon the controls. When I finally tried it, I found the game to be unplayable to it was only one of two times I ever returned an opened game to where I bought it. (The other was Neutopia II on the TG16 when the Hucard literally stopped functioning). I ended up swapping it for the PS2 version, which played much better. Although I did notice a little bit of a lag in a few random spots of MegaMan 3. Not slowdown from the original games or conversion from the PS2 to the TV screen, but for whatever reason the emulation not fully processing things correctly. Although, that could also be my specific (unmodded) PS2 model not properly running it. When the Xbox version came out a year or so later, I ended up giving my PS2 copy to my brother and picking up that one. I only knew that it had four different controller schemes on it (compared to the non-existent options on the GCN and PS2 versions). I was happy to also find out when the Xbox 360 introduced Backwards Compatibility that it, too, was backwards compatible as well. I remember emailing the contacts at Capcom's website asking if they might consider doing a new pressing or a "Player's Choice" re-release of the game some day with better controls (I was young and foolishly thought this might actually happen). I received two emails back. One very pleasant, telling me that they did not plan to make a new printing with additional control options and thanking me for having purchased and emailed them about it. The other one angrily saying that they were not going to "fix" the controls because there was nothing broken with them and many people have emailed them to express how great and improved the Gamecube controls were (uh huh 🤥). When the PS2 version of MMX Collection came out, I went straight for that. Wasn't even going to risk the Gamecube version, which I guess had already addressed the controller issues. I was sad to discover that while the menus appear to run at 480i, the games themselves run at 240p, which causes issues for my TV and capture device when using a component output. Thankfully, the PS2 S-Video cable makes an adequate substitute at a slightly reduced quality.
First off, great review! I didnt realize all of the little things growing up playing this collection! But i'm kinda bummed out you didnt go over the importance of Power Battles being in this collection. To me, one of the biggest reasons why these old collections were so great was because of all the content! These were ACTUAL collections that not only had all the games up to that point, but also had extra games! MegaMan Power Battles 1 and 2 are really important because that gave you an extra reason to buy the collection rather than to just emulate all of the main games. Plus, it actually showed how Capcom gave a crap back then rather than giving us the bare minimum when it came to collections. A modern classic collection should have looked like: Megaman 1-10(including alternate versions) Megaman power battles 1 and 2, Megaman Battle and Chase, Gameboy Megaman Games 1-5, and Megaman Powered Up.
As far as the Saturn version of Megaman 8 never being used in collections I noticed that in nearly every rerelease of any game that has a Saturn Port (such as Castlevania Symphony of the Night) they never use the Saturn version, even when it's the superior release that has extra content. I don't know if Saturn has some kind of exclusivity deal that prevents them from being used again, or if Saturn games are just more annoying to port than PS1 games but none the less that's what seems to happen.
I believe it has something to do with the source code of the saturn being lost (but could be wrong there) as well as emulation being tricky for saturn games (probably due to the way they made the saturn and it know for being tricky to program for)
I have no idea why Anniversary Collection has a bad rep. It's pretty much go-to when I want to play the six NES games, and was actually the way I experienced Megaman 1, 5 and 6 for the first time. And yes, I did manage to beat all 8 games on the GameCube version with that borked control layout. It's even worse once you realize that the original releases of Megaman 7 and 8 actually had remappable buttons and they took the feature *out* of MMAC. I say Legacy Collection 2, with Megaman 7-10 and the Anniversary Collection (on PS2 or Xbox) are great companions. They really do need to flipping release the Saturn version of 8 again, though >:V
I still remember booting the original Megaman 7 up and getting to ShadeMan's stage and Bass is there saying "Damn" after you meet up with him and Megaman says "go to Dr. Light, he can fix you up!" in the original SNES cartridge and then taking that out for the Anniversary collection. It's a small nit pick, but I get where you're coming from when it comes to the Anniversary versions of MM7 and MM8 Also...thank you for the history lesson, there was some stuff in that video that I didn't even know about!
Big Mega Man fan here myself, and I was glad to have found this collection lying around in a store a little over a decade ago (Gamecube version). It wasn't long after I got into the series and it was a convenient way to play the classics. The A/B button swapping was annoying but I got used to it enough. The lackluster sound emulation and flaws with MM7 and 8 were the most disappointing parts for me, especially because 7 and 8 are some of my favorites and they were the main reason I got the collection. Overall though I still say Anniversary Collection still has merit over the Legacy Collections we have now. Great vid! 👍
The Anniversary Collection is a great way for someone who wants to physically own these games to have them for a reasonable price. Legacy Collection is there for a more original hardware accurate version with lag frames and stuff intact, but Anniversary Collection still serves that purpose as well as what you went into with localizing Navi mode from Complete Works. I still have my OG Xbox copy and it’s cool to have that on the shelf even if I would rather play Legacy.
The only reason I didn't bother with the legacy collections was because I still have both this and the X Collection (the former on GC, the latter on PS2) and I remember just sitting in the menus listening to the remixes the collection had. I kinda sucked at classic Megaman too so I'd pop back out of a game just to run around xD
@@legospacememe8468 I hadn't really played any of the classic megaman games before so it was a non-issue. Also wasn't the only game that had the buttons mapped like that so I already had some prior experience.
I wonder if a high quality upscaler, like a RetroTINK or GBS Control, would fix any input delay issues that come from playing on a modern display. Might work out and help deinterlace the 480i image the PS2 and Gamecube versions have. Great job on the video!
Been replaying this collection on gamecube with wii and component cables hooked to a crt. Its honesty my preferred method. The extra hints via pause screen makes the world feel more fleshed out. I like the triggers to change weapons fast and a auto fire for when I feel lazy also great. Also turning on the hints in options to have beat point out some hazards is also cute
I grew up with this collection, it was my introduction to Mega Man as well Suffice to say I love it, it's not bad! I never felt like the timing was different between Mega Man 8 on this collection vs the Legacy Collection 2, for example! Never had an issue personally
Copy and Paste. For the love of God, turn V-Sync off. COPY AND PASTE. I died listening to the reemphasizing in the tutorial xD A very nicely done look at some gems from the past. Thanks for covering them. Enjoyed the video and have a nice day everyone.
Oh my god, I thought I was going insane. This anniversary collection was my introduction to the franchises, and for so long I had been used to how the remasters worked that I thought I was just remembering wrong.
Came across a copy of it on Gamecube on the cheap. Was intended for my brother, who loved the old NES and PS1 games. He wants it for his Wii. Videos like this giving me food for thought as to get it or get one for a different platform.
3:48 As a Retro Fighters fan, I suggest you buy the Defender and BladeGC (or BattlerGC) controllers each, then use a Defender on a Retro Fighters GameCube receiver that's included with the BladeGC (or BattlerGC). You can play MMAC with Circle as Jump and Cross as Special Weapons. You can still rapid fire with Triangle, but sliding with Square isn't ideal unless you stick to the Down+Jump input.
One major bonus about this collection is that it's piss easy to replace the music in all the games with your own. Download the music you want from TH-cam and convert it to gcm, then profit
Also, I remember getting this game back in my early childhood. This was one of my very first PS2 games I've ever owned in my life. Oh the memories. I used to also enjoy Navi Mode on the PS2 version but my brother used to get mad at me because he thought I was playing the game on easy mode. I personally don't find anything wrong with Navi Mode. I just enjoy the arranged music.
I actually like a lot of the remixed music in these versions of the games. In fact, I was disappointed the remixed music wasn't included as an option for the Mega Man Legacy Collections on the newer consoles.
I had the GameCube version (never got used to the inverted A and B buttons). Something else weird I noticed in Mega Man 8 was when you fought the bosses; they'd appear, say their line as normal, and when the fight began, ALL of their audio was slightly faster and higher pitched. It was the weirdest thing. Bosses like Clown Man and Aqua man, who had higher pitched voices, sounded (more) ridiculous. Did anyone else notice this detail happening on other consoles, or was it just the Game Cube?
Dope video! I love the NES Mega Man games and remember being excited when I received this game one year for Christmas, the Gamecube version-- And WOW, those reversed jump and shoot buttons were IMMEDIATELY noticeable, but I attempted to power through it...Even tried to rationalize 'maybe I can think of this as an extra challenge!' But nope, it was ultimately a deal-breaker. Thankfully, I still have my NES versions
I always wondered why this was seen as a hack job, and all of these things seem like nitpicks at worst. The audio issues with 7 and 8 are a bit annoying, but there were there in the original games too. I agree about 7's ending credits though. I've got a crt and ps2 to play it on too ad input la was never an issue. I saw no reason to get the legacy collection since I already have the definitive version of them.
Nice video. Very cool. I have to admit I never knew about any of the new features. The collaging is very amateur but I find it pretty cool, and the QoL features are reallllyy nice.
No one ever mentions this, but when you start grenade man’s level on a native game cube, a huge chunk of the music is skipped. If you boot the game on a Wii, the music is played correctly. I noticed this as a kid and NO ONE could hear explain to me why this occurred.
Huh, I've always heard that the PS2 version has the first episode of Ruby-Spears, Gamecube got the Inafune G4 interview, and Xbox (Which I always heard came out six months to a year later) got both. This is the first time I've heard about the Xbox version having an episode of NT Warrior. In fact I think I even heard the "Xbox got both" thing ON G4 back in the day.
Speaking of your part about latency, that's pertty much why I quit the Legacy Collections (I heard XLC is mostly the least responsive on the PS4), and it's still present.
I find it funny how I got used way too fast of the bogus GCN controller scheme, and yeah, this collection is still great overall to play... even if for whatever reason the ending credits of Mega Man 7 got the bad treatment of the impression of being rushed and Mega Man 8 having no way to adjust the audio settings, also, the arcade games... in the case of Power Battle it has the actual CPS-1 sound, unlike the Ps2 JPN only collection that makes said game to use the CPS-2 sound like Power Fighters (one thing that goes against Anniversary Collection with the arcade games is the fact that they don't have a way to adjust difficulty, nor any of the arcade collection extras like the Super Hard mode that makes you fight all bosses while the game has nearly all of the hardest settings by default (the only setting it's under the player's control in that regard is the ability to continue the game whenever you die, it's not feasable to beat said mode if you disable continues and don't have a 2nd controller).
I remember preordering this in college from capcom and getting a free shirt! That was a pretty good summer along with picking up FLCL vol 1-3 and Aqua Teen Hunger Force season 1. I do wish we had gotten the saturn verison of 8 at some point, but what really bothered me are how the boss's voices are sped up or slowed down at certain points. Even on the ps4 legacy collection 2 its almost perfect, except still a bit sped up when they say "I'm --- Man" at the level select. I guess I always have my ps1 version. I'm not sure why that's so hard to get right. Oh, also in 7 with the missing ending images it makes it look like Bass and Treble are part of the staff since they're just listed off XD
Really dig this deep dive! I remember playing the hell out of my gamecube copy (got a PS2 copy last year, too), I love the "main menu" running around as Mega Man. Just makes it feel like a more complete experience, rather than some boring menu.
I got into the megaman franchise via the legacy collections. The fact that I am a huge fan of the franchise now makes the legacy collection a massive thumbs up in my book.
Got a GC late, and this game would be the third GC game I would have got it like a few weeks when the Wii came out. It is my first and only Gamecube game I bought on store that was not a second-hand disc and the last GC game I would ever see in a retail store shelf. I've played Megaman 64 and Zero series and this would be the first time I would play the OG games yet playing the games gave me a tear since the series was considered officially canceled by that time. ...And Electman Stage Music did not help. I did play the heck out of it and the keiji inafune interview was inspiring to me since as a kid I wanted to make videogames as well - never did in the end - I do remember that he started out with drawing (same as Miyamoto) which is something I did and still do. I do remember having fun "trying" so hard playing it with the DK Bongos and see if I can make it work. Never beaten Megaman 7 and sadly after a few years later Megaman 7 and (one of my favorites) 8 were no longer playable, maybe due to a scratch. I that time I thought it would be hard to find these games and perhaps I might never get a chance to play them again, I was sad but soon after a ray of hope came and I was filled with joy knowing that Megaman was in Smash and in my point of view it save the series from death, not really aware that many Megaman games were already in WiiU, 3DS, and maybe even the Wii eShop at the time, but still it was a great feeling seeing Megaman back in the spot light again. Anyways this collection here is Grand.
15:49 Neat thing about PS2 and PS1 emulators, they're the easiest console to emulate with legal copies of games. As long as you have a DVD drive in your computer you can pop the disc in and run it. I use to play SMT Nocturne this way a long time ago, when PS2 emulation was MUCH worse. I know a lot of people don't have DVD drives anymore, but you can pick up a USB DVD drive if you really want to go this route.
I own Megaman's 1 through 4 on the NES. I just bought the PS2 version for a measly five Canadian dollars and mostly for Megaman 7, which costs nearly a fortune for the SNES, and Megaman 8. Worth it.
It's my favorite, I have such nostalgia for the music, menus, and especially the additions of other characters acting as Navigators! :D It's really cool! And it adds a lot of character building to characters in a series with almost no Dialogue. I love it! :D Also weirdly I never really cared about the audio issues, I guess that's just me. Although I didn't know I never actually saw MM7's ending until just now. :( That sucks bro. I did watch it on YT just a bit ago, it was cool af. Shame they couldn't get it working in time. T_T
The one problem I know is the visuals. More specifically the resolution. This outputs in 480i, which can make the games look blurrier than they should. They really should have outputted 240p. Which sounds worse, but the key difference is the p. Having progressive and not interlaced does make it look sharper

A note regarding input lag on modern displays:
The input lag you get from displaying old systems on a modern TV actually comes primarily from the image scaling it has to do to make the picture fit the whole height of the screen. "Game" modes on TVs generally help reduce lag because they disable a lot of the other processing on the image, which normally adds latency. Your TV's game mode can't eliminate the delay entirely for a few reasons:
1) Virtually every LCD/LED display has some inherent latency to the image. This has generally gotten better over time, especially with some newer display tech like OLED.
2) The scaling your TV has to do to make the picture fit the screen will always add at least a little bit of extra delay, especially when working with super low resolutions like 240p (what basically every system before the GC/PS2/XBOX era used by default.)
3) Modern displays handle video signals in a fundamentally different way than old CRT TVs.
Thank you tons for sharing this info! I'd never have come across it myself
thanks for the pro info
I'd also like to add that because the Anniversary Collection is emulating the games and you are emulating the console, the lag is increased twofold. You are essentially emulating an emulator. Highly suggest you just get a PS2, they are very cheap not to mention extremely easy to mod. A modded ps1/2 with a burned copy of the megaman ports on a crt is the best way to experience the games lag free.
ain't no one goin to jail for emulation. that's like ppl back in the day being scared of mp3s being illegal ppl still did it and today too and no one being jailed
I know. Stating all that is moreso an obligation for obvious reasons, lol
Piracy is all about context. Pirating a really old game that's like £900+? Yeah, that's fair and respectable. Pirating a game that's easily accessible and cheap? That's just bloody stupid.
Also, emulation is completely fair, it's misjudged due to ROM piracy.
@@beanut7759 all of that is still legals. lemme say this a law as strong as the mfs enforcing it. these companies know they can't go after ppl directly for owning those roms so next best thing is the sites. also not everyone can just buy physical hardware that aged like booty to play games legally emulation and piracy is the way to go
i mean i really don't care if it's cheap as heck. my money isn't supporting some indie dev it's going to the pocket of some ebay seller or scalper. so i don't buy into the meat riders mindset of fuck emulation its illegal. you better not do it or my papa at Nintendo will jail you
My only major complaint with the Legacy Collection is that they didn't add the Complete Works OST to the games, its reasons like that why I can appreciate the Anniversary Collection a little more.
But damn hearing that Grenade Man entry in the anniversary collection gave me PTSD and my ears easily remember that ear gripping explosion sound. X_X;;;
LOL Ironically the reason why I loved playing Rockman 4 Complete Works on my Vita over the Legacy Collection.
honestly in my opinion the sound mixing in mega man 8 isn' that bad
While the sound was inconsistent on 7 and 8, the 8 bit games use separate channels for music and sound effects. This means in 2 and especially 4, the boss music isn't drowned out by the life bar filling up before the fight. Which is a positive
7:10 I got startled by the loud explosion, but I cracked up at Magnus' dialogue after that!
Wow... I can't really describe what a treat this video is to me personally. Used to be so sad I couldn't play anniversary without lag, just assumed that's how it'd be forever. You made this megaman fan's day by letting us know about it being possible nowadays and how to configure it! Thank you so much!
I still think the Anniversary Collection is better than the Legacy Collections
The heavily maligned Gamecube version was I really loved. It had all the 8 megaman games in one place, and it was the very first time I was able to play them. The PS2 extras didn't matter that much to me, and the reversed controls took some time to master, but were ultimately doable.
I spent summer of 2004 playing the collection. Felt really good, especially after the insanely traumatizing school year before it.
I saw your fantasy insulting reverendburn the other day
Still have the PS2 version. This and the Mega Man Zero Collection for the DS made my childhood.
It's not underrated. All those games were well established classics before the collection came out. This whole video is stupid
No it isn't underrated. It was very well received by the majority of critics and consumers.
@@ultraspinalki11 I actually do have a memory card with free mcboot. I suppose I should look into that adapter - appreciate the advice!
I would've like the option to adjust the buttons. The jump and shoot buttons in particular.
That grenade man jumpscare explosion had me rolling I legit forgot about that 😂
I remember playing that stage early in the AM before school.
I loved this port on the PS2. I really wished they had given the same treatment for the Gameboy games as well but it never got made.
It was in development but got nixed due to BS
anniversary collection was one of my first games ever I probably would not be as big of a fan as I am without it
As a gamecube owner, after being an 80's kid, this release is easily in my top 3 disappointments.
Shame we couldn't get a second disc of the Japanese Power and Fighters release instead of just emulating the CPS1 and CPS2 roms.
you can also enable an option called Optimal Frame Pacing, from my testing it reduces input lag by one frame
Magnus in 2021: "I'm quitting guides."
Magnus in 2023: 18:22 🤔
Jokes aside, great video. This will help me a lot.
I believe it has something to do with the source code of the saturn being lost (but could be wrong there) as well as emulation being tricky for saturn games (probably due to the way they made the saturn and it know for being tricky to program for)
Do you plan of doing a Weapon Master run with Mega Man 7 one day?
Megaman 8 rock ball only when? /s
This game is what actually got me into gaming as a whole. I love this collection to this day, despite its flaws. Great video!
Used to looove this collection in my teen years ! It’s how I experienced the classic series the first time. I loved the X collection too !
It's a small nit pick, but I get where you're coming from when it comes to the Anniversary versions of MM7 and MM8
Also...thank you for the history lesson, there was some stuff in that video that I didn't even know about!
I kinda sucked at classic Megaman too so I'd pop back out of a game just to run around xD
how did you adjust to the reversal of a and b. that turned me off the gamecube version immediately.
@@legospacememe8468 I hadn't really played any of the classic megaman games before so it was a non-issue. Also wasn't the only game that had the buttons mapped like that so I already had some prior experience.
@@megasoniczxx you mean the ones on sega consoles
@@legospacememe8468Nah, just in general. For instance i'm pretty sure Star Fox Assault had A to fire and jump on either B, X or Y.
@@megasoniczxx alot of games on snes like mega man 7 and x1-3 had b as jump so you got a point
Nice vid :) keep it up!
I wonder if a high quality upscaler, like a RetroTINK or GBS Control, would fix any input delay issues that come from playing on a modern display. Might work out and help deinterlace the 480i image the PS2 and Gamecube versions have. Great job on the video!
I still have my GameCube Version from 2004. Remember buying it with the Wavebird.....throwback
The GC button swap issue is a travesty. I always tried to prefer the GC version of games when I could as a fanboy, but it was too much.
I grew up with this collection, it was my introduction to Mega Man as well
Suffice to say I love it, it's not bad! I never felt like the timing was different between Mega Man 8 on this collection vs the Legacy Collection 2, for example! Never had an issue personally
Copy and Paste. For the love of God, turn V-Sync off. COPY AND PASTE.
I died listening to the reemphasizing in the tutorial xD
A very nicely done look at some gems from the past. Thanks for covering them. Enjoyed the video and have a nice day everyone.
I actually liked MM anniversary collection when I was a kid on the old school XBOX.
I used to play this all the time on GameCube. Thanks for the video Magnus, hope you're having a good one!
This is the kind of super specific geek content i love, i never knew about the changed hitboxes until now damn
Still have this and the x collection for GameCube. Love these. Plus they have extra games included.
The GameCube versions high-pitched voices for Mega Man 8, makes me laugh everytime I play it.
gamecube version? im pretty sure those voices are in every version
15:23 Thank you for the Explanation Magnus !
"High sound effect volume? It can't be that ba-"

"He even gave me a warning and I didn't listen"
I admire your impressive pixel precision. Great analysis.
I am proud to have beaten the MM1 Yellow devil in this collection without the glitch( but also didn't knew it existed).
You have an awesome way of wording things. I'm gonna sub.
Loud volume warning,, 1 second later, full headphones boom!, nice video
What is the name of the song the starts at 13:36?
Mega Man 7 - Turtle's Realm (Wily Stage 2)
Do you know the one music for 7:35?
I will say on the Air Man tangent - as a more casual fan, that jump still looks rather tight
Hey guy’s wich one of the version is better the original on the NES or the PS2 version overall? Thank you
Really dig this deep dive! I remember playing the hell out of my gamecube copy (got a PS2 copy last year, too), I love the "main menu" running around as Mega Man. Just makes it feel like a more complete experience, rather than some boring menu.
This was my first exposure to Mega Man classic. But it’s so weird to go back to the GameCube version with the GIANT shoot button and TINY jump button.
Your voice sounds a bit different in this video and judging by the set up I'd wager you got a new mic. Good stuff Magnus.
Disabling fullscreen optimizations in Windows 10 for PCSX2 made a noticeable reduction in input lag. Also ran as administrator.
I got into the megaman franchise via the legacy collections. The fact that I am a huge fan of the franchise now makes the legacy collection a massive thumbs up in my book.
I didn't know about all these small differences but I love the remixed music and the way you can switch weapons on the fly.
I have the Gamecube version and for the time I enjoyed it a lot but the legacy collections are so much better in terms of emulation.
Bought a copy for GameCube at launch. Excellent collection. Yeah the button mapping was odd
Never noticed magnus has a framed picture of zero, absolutley amazing….
I own Megaman's 1 through 4 on the NES. I just bought the PS2 version for a measly five Canadian dollars and mostly for Megaman 7, which costs nearly a fortune for the SNES, and Megaman 8. Worth it.
I loved it for lag fix and weapon quick switching.
I can't complain much about it, it was my 2nd megaman game and really got me into the original series (1st game was advant)
Good video.
Still have my PS2 copy from back in the day that I bought new.
Now, just need to find my memory card...
i had the gamecube one
i was annoyed about the buttons but just played around it
in the modern era custom controllers make it a treat to have the disc
Anniversary actually got me into the franchise. Loved Mega Man ever since.
It's my favorite, I have such nostalgia for the music, menus, and especially the additions of other characters acting as Navigators! :D It's really cool! And it adds a lot of character building to characters in a series with almost no Dialogue. I love it! :D
Also weirdly I never really cared about the audio issues, I guess that's just me.
Another banger video by magnus. Take my +1's
I'd never expect anyone to make a video on MMAC. I've done research and hacking on this game and honestly I prefer this over legacy collection.
