  • Among the most popular modes on HF, is PSK31. This video gives a simple explanation on what this popular mode is, and how to get started. Check out my other video on the USB soundcard device I used in this video to make contacts.

Thanks for the video. As a new ham without a radio yet I am trying to learn as much as I can. You cleared up a lot that I didn't understand when studying for my General Lic. 73

Thank you for this video! Im a tech license holder so I can't tx on 20m and I have trouble finding anyone in 10m on PSK. I'm studying for General and Extra. Hope to get there later this year.

Right on! Thanks for the informative video. I just started psk31 last night on my phone with droidpsk. I participate in Summits on the Air and I am going to try psk31 from a mountain top. Just trying something new. My set up will be a KX2, signalink and my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with a homebrew speakerwire antenna cut for 20m. W6RIP

Just started doing PSK31 and Rtty last week and have made a bunch of contacts. Lots of fun. Got a little confusing on protocols concerning pile ups. I was told up up up a couple of times before I figured something was wrong. The pile up was for a DX expedition TU7C from the Ivory Coast in Africa. Not considered a good contact if they tell you to move off frequency hi hi. Guess you talk and receive on different frequencies. I tried that but was unsuccessful in getting a response but there was tons of stations transmitting. I mostly use macros because I use a Samsung tablet, droidrtty, droidpsk with wolphi-link cable either portable or mobile and very difficult to type on a small screen. The portable is a Yaesu FT-817ND and Mobile is a Kenwood TS-480SAT.

Cool video Thanks I too am just getting into modes. I figured out ft8 i think i will try this next. Looks fun ft8 is all about short contacts and waiting for people to answer your calls and people are picky about who they talj to it seems like if your not the grid square they need they dont care about talking to you.

That’s the same way I used to operate the digital modes decades ago, typing into the buffer while receiving the other station. I also typed into the buffer on CW for perfect code, but I didn’t type into the buffer while receiving CW. It’s easy to type into the buffer at only 25 to 30 wpm CW, because I can type pretty fast.
Have you ever tried to remotely control your Icom 7300 with a BA-1 and a laptop? You could operate at portable locations with your 7300 if you had a BA-1 and a laptop with an Internet connection. You could also create some videos setting up and using your BA-1.

Hey Eric Great Video, although dated, pertinent, you are so prolific across all subject matters, really doing a super job explaining these subject matters. Fantastic info,..new modes popping up all the time JT65 / 9 / FT8 /FT8CALL,.. ALL GREAT, prefer the human interaction..modes over FT8. keep it up, 73s LZ/AE1TP

pretty cool, have been watching and listening in, using the same software and an icom 706mkiig but don't have the sound card interface for transmit. Hope to be getting one soon. the way you operate typing ahead of the transmit makes great sense, it never occurred to me that you could do that.

Thanks Eric for the video. Was very informative. As a licensed Amateur Radio operator for over 40 years I've really enjoyed CW. Perhaps in 2018 this will be my new goal. I have a HP notebook computer (have no direct internet line) at present using wifi hot spot to reach the internet using my Android phone so the notebook receives enough signal, narrow bandwidth and slow.I have the Kenwood TS-590S, the ICOM 7100, and the old ICOM 207H.The 207H is in the car.Am thinking about purchasing the MFJ-1204 with its associated cable. Will get the other interface cable for the ICOM 7100. Was thinking about dedicating the 7100 towards VHF packet and APRS and purchasing the MFJ-1270X (or do I need this?)? Perhaps the MFJ-1204 will work w/both radios? Will the MFJ-1204 work with the 207H? Have to get appropriate cable(s) for this old rig as well.
Plus I need to download the software. Thanks to Koji/AI7HU JP1HUJ
for directing me to your video's.

Good deal. Now I have an idea about PSK31. I'm not so sure if I am into the keyboarding aspect... would probably more enjoy the CW mode, but its an interesting alternative, at low power. I need to go back and look at the other software program you displayed.... HAM RADIO ON STEROIDS or something like that :) Just curious what THAT was. I;ll go back and check out the second PSK video you said is uploaded, to see what else I can learn here. Drop me an email // I sent you one or more today. We're not that far apart here in Florida // might be nice to chat sometime. I just took delivery of an 817 nd and getting set up with antennas and qrp gear. 73 de N4BRM

    Awesome video Eric
Question: Can I purchase Digital Master 780 separately from Ham Radio Deluxe.
Also, I read that there was some conflict in the HRD management and some bad blood between them and customers. I don't want to buy a product and then not be able to get tech support and updates without paying through the nose.

The best thing is that one needs no license to monitor this mode. I am very interested in receiving these transmissions. I have an old receiver that receives from 24megacycles to 1700megacycles. Now I just need to interface it to a tablet or computer and put it on an antenna. Maybe the microphone will be good enough. I can not transmit anyway.

    Help PLEASE!
Just got my Tech ticket first of June....passed Extra this past week. Ive been spending some time tuning in hf using sdruno software with the rsp1a. This weekend I download vb-audio, virtual serial port, and fldigi. I was really struggling with how to find psk31 data to decode. I worked through all of the issues with connecting fldigi so that it controlled sdruno, but couldnt seem to find frequency signals that werent just showing up as jumbled letters and characters.
How can I go about finding solid psk31 signals, and should I consider going to something different than fldigi? I am not necessarily interested in tx right now, but want to get the rx process down

Ok so normally I really like your videos, But this didn't really show how to set up the sound card. You say it's critical not to over drive things. How is a new ham supposed to know what is too much signal? BTW your not the only one that doesn't explain this. I'm not bashing you, just a tad more explanation goes a long way.
