  • Here's a sample PSK-31 QSO with annotations and descriptions. If you're a General or Amateur Extra-class ham and want to try digital, here's an example. I know I learn best by example rather than theory, so perhaps this will help get you jumpstarted! This video is the third in a series about PSK-31, demonstrated using the free software FLDIGI. You can get FLDIGI for yourself by visiting www.w1hkj.com. Thank you for watching my videos! My channel, "Ham Radio Answers," is here to help you become an active, on-the-air amateur radio operator! I am unique in that I provide the only set of TH-cam training videos that accompany the ARRL license manuals, section for section. I try hard to answer every Ask Dave question individually if I can.
    Credits: Music (Sour Tennessee Red) courtesy TH-cam Audio Library: www.youtube.co.... I often use graphics from openclipart.org -- a great source! I also frequently use photos and videos from www.nasa.gov. The little clip that shows the demo rewinding is something I created entirely myself.
    I'm often asked what equipment I use to create the videos. The devices include the Panasonic HDC-TMT90 video camera, Tascam DR-05 audio recorder, Audio-Technica ATR-3350 lapel microphone, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W560 digital camera, the Kodak Zi-8 video camera, my iPhone 5S, and Pentax K100D DSLR. Software used: CyberLink PowerDirector 13 on a Toshiba S55-A5294, also using Smoothdraw 4.0.5.0, FastStone Image Viewer 5.3, FastStone Capture 8.0, Audacity 2.1.1., and LibreOffice 5.0.4.2. Dave, you are an Officer, Scholar and Gentleman. A real doyen of HF radio and the mystery of amateur radio.
    Well done - although I have no knowledge of PSK31.
    I'm still grasping with FEC, SSB, CW and AM....
    Thanks Dave - you're the man. Cheers :-)

    Excellent video Dave! This was very helpful as I have been absent from Ham Radio for almost 10 years and just starting back as of February 2018. I am just now getting into the digital modes, other than Packet that I ran back in the early 90's. Living in an HOA antenna restricted home makes it tough to operate with much power using my concealed antennas. The digital modes will give me more options for making contacts at a low power. This video answered many questions for me as did the previous #26 video. Thanks so very much for all you do to advance Ham Radio. 73!

    Hello. David. I have watched your Tech and General Class tutorials, while reading the ARRL manuals, per your instruction ... and studying at hamexam.org and hamstudy.org, I just received my CSCE for General Class ham operator today. I'm very excited. I just wanted to thank you. I know making videos like yours requires a lot of effort and time. But, because of hams like you, I passed my Tech and my General today. I have a lot to learn. But I look forward to learning it. The VEs said my prefix callsign should be KD9 (Indiana), or something. Thanks again, David. What a fascinating hobby ... and really good people. 73.

    Dave I enjoy your videos very much. I also have used your series on the amateur extra class exam to have passed my extra class test a little over a week ago.
    I did notice on this video that when you clicked on the QTH of N7NES and replaced his name with his QTH you also overwrote his call with yours. Then starting at 9:47 when you start using your macro (3rd from left) to send the call signs you end up sending KE0OG de KE0OG instead of N7TES de KE0OG. Best Regards Jim - WA8MDC.

    Hi, Dave, I don't suppose you know how / where I can get the 'file' I need for fldigi to recognize the Icom 7300?? I've been searching all over the internet, but cannot find it. I should mention that I'm trying to use my Icom 7300 with fldigi on a Mac. Apparently, the file needed to use it with Windows is readily available, but the file for Mac is not so available.

    Hi David, Thanks so much for your videos! This one is great.. I have two questions though. When doing psk31, (or any of the digmodes) The frequency on your transmitter *must* match the same frequency that is on the top left (in this case 14.070 Mhz) correct?
    Also can you transmit through psk31, but talking directly into the mic on your computer and have it sent to your plugged in transceiver? or does psk31 only exclusively work with keyboard input?

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily, although that is best practice. The software in your computer locks onto the signal. The two signals are on the same frequency, but let's say your radio reads 14.070 MHz, and your signal is 2 kHz up from that, and the other guy's radio reads 14.071 MHz, and his signal is 1 kHz up from that, you both end up conversing on the same frequency. Hope that helps. 73

    David, thanks for the video. That helps a lot. I decoded my first "in the wild" PSK-31 stream earlier today. I don't have a license, but I'm kicking the tires by using a websdr site and then using fldigi to see what I can snoop off the air.
    One thing that I haven't seen explained anywhere, probably because the convention is so well known among ham operators they don't think to mention it, but is there a standard convention of using only USB or LSB for digital modes? For CW it doesn't matter, but I believe for most digital modes if you use the wrong modulation the spectrum will be mirrored and garbage will be decoded. For voice band comms it is easy to distinguish USB from LSB, but not so for digital modes.
    So far I've had a few successes, but many signals I'm unable to figure out and I'm sure I'm wasting a lot of time flipping between USB and LSB to see if that is the cause of my problems. A number of times I've seen what looks like an obvious RTTY signal but have been unable to decode it -- maybe it isn't rtty after all, or maybe I haven't found the right combination of usb/lsb x baud rate x character set. I'm beginning to suspect that it is RTTY but it is communicating something other than text, as these streams have no breaks and just go and go and go.
    Thanks again

    Does fldigi do any logging of the QSO?

    • @davecasler

      It has a rudimentary internal logging program. Recently the N3FJP All Contact Log program has been made compatible with fldigi. 73, Dave

    Is it possible to work a frequency split so two people can transmit and receive at the same time?

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Multiple people can use PSK-31 in the same frequency band because each transmits a very narrow signal.

    Thanks Dave, this was a big help and looking to try this mode, I like having a conversation rather than some of the modes. One thing I didn't pick up on yet, I was wondering...sometimes I hear it as psk-31 and other times bpsk-31, I take it they are the same mode? Somehow I missed this when people talk about this mode. Thanks and keep up the great work. 73..wd0akx

      PSK-31 is actually a family of modes. The most common is Binary PSK-31 or BPSK-31.

    Your signals are so strong and clean on 20M. Thinking I have a noise issue as the S meter never goes below S8. Looking at your waterfall everything looks so terrific and clear, to at least start the decode process. Have only had success on JT65 when the bands are "open". What antenna system are you using?

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin J Local noise issues can be frustrating! Try various grounding techniques or rearranging cables to see if that helps. There are lots of ideas for reducing radio frequency interference at www.arrl.org/radio-frequency-interference-rfi. Regarding my antenna, it's a ground-mounted Butternut HF-9V multi-band vertical. I completely refurbished it a couple years ago and have been quite pleased with its performance. 73, Dave

      I use RG213 for HF bands and Belden 9913 for low loss on VHF & UHF bands... VK2LEE Lee

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My favorite coax to work with is RG-8X, which is great at HF. I prefer RG-213 to LMR-400 because it's easier to work with. I still have half a spool left of LMR-400, though, so I'll be using that for awhile. LMR-400 is an absolute pain to put connectors on.
