Really enjoy your videos on PSK. In fact ALL your videos are super. Recently received my call and working on getting on the air. The wife keeps hiding the check book. ☺ 73
Thank you for helping he with PSK31 , i was planning on getting a Flex 3000. This will definitly help out with communications. Until i can afford a Flex 3000 this Digipan and using PSK-31 is awsome. You are a great presenter. 73's VE3NCV , Ontario Canada.
Hi again Randy. Here we are, commenting for the third time today. I think I previously called you Andy by mistake - please accept my apologies, for I was so fired with enthusiasm by your three PSK31 videos. I downloaded DigiPan last night, and could not really make much of it. So this morning, decided to look on YT for instruction. Happily, I found your three videos, with the result that starting from Absolute Zero about mid-day, I made my first PSK31 QSO about 4 or 5 hours later! Thank you very, very much. This is the best of all worlds: the great hobby of amateur radio; efficient *free* software, generously developed & donated to all by dedicated enthusiasts; and last but not least, your laid-back, practical and pragmatic instruction. May I add my congratulations to those of all your other students? Very best 73 from a grateful Norman, G4LQF. (Also, age 73!)
Thanks Randy. Used PSK-31 for the first time yesterday after following your instructions. Got some very good qso's and 1 into France. Thank you for helping with another aspect of the hobby. 73's VA6GSM.. Geoff
Hello Randy. Thanks to your TH-cam videos I was able to start using PSK31. I just made my first contact using 10 watts and received a 599 and clean signal report. Your videos helped me avoid some common mistakes getting on the air with PSK. Thanks again and 73's Ed, K3ENV
Hi Randy, I just this last Saturday got my Signal Link USB interface. Downloaded DigiPan. Then spent 3 days figuring out I was actually using 2 separate sound cards. Had me confused for a time, but with the help of one of the club members was instructed in how to configure them. Now I'm just watching your videos to see what I'm need to do to make contacts. I really think it's almost as scary as it was the first time I sent CQ in 1956 when I came home from school and found my license. Anyway, you video helped a lot. Think I will be OK. hi hi Thanks
Really enjoyed the video, I have to say that out of all the digital modes PSK is my favorite. I was looking foreward to Field Day this year, I got to be the first PSK station to ever set up at our club's FD event. Had a few bugs to work out, it didn't all run smoothly, had some antenna and feedline issues to sort out. But once I got things working I had a blast. 73 de Keith KC8TCQ
great video!! i got my tech license few weeks ago (10/16/09) and working on general. test is on 11/12/09. it is nice to see how it work instead of figuring it out from words in a book. thanks, L8er!! Ray KJ4PWC
Well, you don't know until you try. I had 3 QSOs that day. I do have a beam, but I think all that I was talking to just had wire antennas. It will be better when the sun spots are back. But it does work. Randy
Gday Randy - like the videos you have put on youtube - inspired me to get my Standard license (from nothing) here in OZ, which is equiv to General in the states. Tried to grab ya on Echolink, but you didnt reply, so I'll try again later - Cheers and 73's, Ben
@BENNYHAWKINS1000 Glad to hear that you got it working. After you make a few qsos you will have a feeling for the information that you are repeating, which then you can load into a macro. Have fun.
Wow! That's pretty slick software! Even has CW.. Wefax? Got it running in 5 minutes. Got the right buttons for PTT setup and now, I have to learn where everything is.. That's gonna take a while.. FLdigi seems to be copying PSK a little better, or maybe 20 meters is cleaner today.. Thanks for the tip.. 73, Rich
Android 5 (Lollipop), which came out recently provides full support for external USB sound cards. So now you can connect for example a Signalink interface directly to an Android tablet which runs an app like e.g. DroidPSK. Here an example on my Nexus 7; DroidPSK on Android Nexus 7 and Signalink. It works fabulous. Best 73 Wil, PA3Q
ah forgot to mention my call - vk2hro - and chumlypage, yeah you can talk for miles - literally hundreds of them on 5 watts - I do it on 1 watt, in a crappy area, in a bowl. It takes time and patience with your radiating things (antenna's) to do it. But its doable. I like running my radios low power - it extends their lives.
You have audio from the radio to the SL and the other way around. From the radio through the mixer to the SL is easy. Just connect to each radio's fixed level output to mixer input, then the mixer output to the SL. Going the other way is a bit trickier. I'm not sure if I would wire all four radios' line input in parallel or not. A larger mixer may have four output buses that you could use to feed each radio. The next issue is the PTT from the SL to each of the radios. You would probably have to make up a switch box to switch the PTT to each radio one at a time. If you have more switch contacts available. you could also use this to switch the SL output to each of the four radios. Also, when feeding a radio out through the mixer to the SL, you would need to keep the mixer inputs for the other three radios turned down, otherwise you would have lots of extra noise going into the SL. So, do you really need to use the SL on four radios? It would be much easier to pick just one radio to use for digital. Have fun, good luck, Randy
yes i have a good size mixer to run all the radios not at the same time of course, as far as a switch box would i be able to use a cat 6 cable switch box for the ptt?
God bless you for these videos, K7AGE. Digipan does like to glitch out on me with Win 10, but it is such small program I just dump it and reload it. The audio just stops working for some reason. I can hear it pop into transmit mode and then nothing. It shows it is transmitting, but it does not have any audio output. The audio input drops out too. Rather infuriating at times. FL Digi does not have these issues. Some of the various modes in FL Digi are very slow, but more reliable with less than optimal signal strength & propagation conditions. I did get to made some contacts with Digipan, and I thank you for the tutorial!! 73 KI7AQJ
+Seth B I went with "FLDigi". I have to say that Digipan may be a little dated, and it seems to have been orphaned & may not be fit for use with Vista or later operating systems. The "help" icon sends me nowhere, so I don't think anyone is supporting Digipan anymore. FL Digi is very similar, has 100s of different digital modes. It has a lot more blank buttons to put in signal reports, you can edit your CQ, you can have it send CQ, wait a preset time and send again, repeatedly. It's really neat!!! I have my QTH with city, state, latitude, longitude, and Maidenhead grid.
This is way to complex. Too many downloads, digipan, logging, macro configuring, cables to connect, soundcards etc. Expansion means complexity and complexity decay. I'll stick with emailing and instant messaging - much simplier and easier to operate thank you very much.

So cool. Running digipan listening to this video, I can catch the other conversations in the waterfall.
Now, get on the air!
K7AGE That's the plan as soon as my HF rig is out of the shop.

Nice video Randy. That PSK31 looks a little like rtty. Thanks It looks like the only way I'll get on line is through you.
Randy,
Do you have to manually switch between receive and transmit each time you type something?
brilliant... taught me!!
Just made my first contact with psk31 :)
Hi Randy,
Very informative and interesting.

It's now almost 2016, has anyone created a better 'free' program for running PSK-31?
Or, is Digipan still King?
FLdigi is free it does PSK and many other digital modes

@SuperTechieJ google for Cocoamodem and Multimode. Randy
No, I don't think that TNC will do PSK-31. Randy
how do i set this Tigertronics SLUSB5PD SIGNALINK USB up on a mix board and use 4 radios and computer?
