    Good stuff Jeff! This 10-minute video probably just saved me 10-HOURS of hunting and clicking trying to find the basics. Been a Ham for 25 years and just recently became interested in the digital modes, other than packet that I ran back in the 90's. I live in an HOA controlled Town Home and have to use stealth antennas in my attic, forcing me to only run low power due to neighbors under the same roof. So most of my contacts have been CW and probably now Digital. Thanks for the fast tutorial!

    Hey Jeff, been a ham longer than you've been on this earth, but you shortened the learning curve for me on this new (to me!) digital mode. Thanks for taking the time to make it. 73 de KQ2N

    Thanks for the excellent video. I've been trying to set up fldigi for a week or so now. Pulling my hair out. I have zero experience with digital. This was very helpful.

    Thank you for the video. Finally found a TH-cam that has helped me to get started. I still need to figure out more of the setup of the software. I guess I just haven't found the right Doc files to read as yet.

    People should really use the TxID button on the top. There's so many modes out there. That will make it clear to somebody listening what mode you are sending in. Yesterday I saw a few signals on 20 meters and tried for probably an hour before I gave up to see what mode it was. No setting would decode, but that TxID tells what mode you are sending out. If the listener clicked RxID Fldigi would tell you the mode of the signal coming in and alert you to what it is.

    Hi Jeff, another Jeff here. Glad I found your video. I’m just now setting up a tablet to run FLDigi with a Signalink, and this video was very helpful. I was thinking of *NOT* doing rig control from FLDigi as well - do you still run it that way? How does it workout for you? Do you use the logging function in FLDIgi? Thanks! 73 de Jeff, KF5KWO

    Hey Jeff, thanks for this vid. Got any more info on FLDIGI? you sort of lost me as to how can you tell if someone is using BPSK 63 instead of 31 like in your vid?
    Tried to get out there tonight on PSK 31 but nothing. Then I went to CW and was getting some decoding. But no contacts :(

    Thanks for the helpful introduction. I am yet to have a QSO on any of these modes. Nobody replies to CQ, even when I jump in at the end of a QSO. I don't know whether it's because I haven't got things set up properly. Also, RxID isn't working. Any ideas on what might be wrong with that?

  • @kevinj8258

    when you say the band is "dead" do you mean that the general noise level is higher than any signal. Am a new general so am trying to use FLDIGI to kind of gauge the normal noise level.

    • @JeffMcGrath
      @JeffMcGrath  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kevin J It could be either or. When I refer to the bands being "dead," that Typically, means that the propagation is so poor that the signals from one station aren't skipping or making it to the another station. This could be cause by many a geomagnetic storm for example (measured with the K Planetary Index.)
      High noise isn't necessarily an indication of bad band conditions. For example, there could be something close putting out a lot of RFI.
      6 Meters (aka the Magic Band) is another excellent example. The 6 meter band is dead the majority of the time, and only a few times does it open up. However, even though the band is dead (or not open) the noise floor is frequently around S1 to S3. The skip just isn't there, and thus the waves don't bounce. Whether they are going through the atmosphere into outer space or maybe they're getting absorbed in the ionosphere.
      Hope that helps.

    In the first part of your video all you have in the waterfall is noise, no signals. I have my waterfall setup so that only the signals are visible. There are two buttons on the left that only adjust the appearance of your waterfall. Your settings are unusable.

    • @JeffMcGrath
      @JeffMcGrath  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. Yes, you can adjust the view of the waterfall, but it still decodes just the same, and is only user preference. I didn't have the time to dive into every feature unfortunately, or the video would have been multiple hours long.
