    Steve Jobs wasn’t entirely wrong about the iPhone screen size. The iPhone 5 was actually the last iPhone he had been working on up until he died. He might have considered larger displays later on if he was alive to see the competition with Android

    The G4 cube may have been a business failure, however it absolutely is a design success. The computer is so beautifully designed. It would not look out of place of desktop today. I wish more computers looks like that.

      I had no idea how clever the G4 cube was in terms of its build. I just remember it being slated and then disappearing. How it opened to access the internals for maintenance and upgrades is very impressive. The more videos I watch on this channel the more I'm seeing that Apples, during the Steve Jobs era, is they were actually easy to work on and upgrade yourself.

    I'm glad you didn't bring the pencil thing up, because most people misinterpret and make fun of it.
    Yes, Jobs said that using a pencil with a touch device is dumb, but this was during the iPhone event where he talked about the main input method. And the Apple Pencil we know today is exclusive for the iPad and is never marketed as the main input method. The focus is on taking notes and doing creative tasks, where the pencil makes sense.

    Good video as usual Greg, but I disagree with your view about the web apps error you mention. One reason not to allow native apps in the iphone early days was that the device was computationally very weak, barely capable of running Apple’s own very good apps. They feared, with good reason, that if they opened the gates to developers, low quality, not fully optimized apps could degrade the user experience, and the iPhone overall reputation. There you have it. Was this a mistake? I don’t think so...

    I think in the longer run Steve Jobs was correct about the iPad screen size. Rn virtually no one buys the iPad mini and it hasn’t really been updated aswell. Although the IPad mini was a success at launch, I think it was just playing catch up to customer demand and not actually the needs. We can see that in the longer how it turned out.

    • @dsch772
      @dsch772 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could also be the fact that at iPad mini's launch there was only iPhone 5, which was only a slightly longer version of the original iPhone. While I can understand the idea behind having a larger screen on your phone if you only have one mobile device to do things, I definitely don't see the point behind having a iPad screen size as small as an iPhone screen now that we have a Pro Max version of it. Their purpose just simply overlap too much. I still firmly believe in Jobs' argument about a small iPhone screen: it's so important to be able to reach every corner of the screen with one hand that it still annoys me to this day I can't do it anymore on my iPhone 12 (did't by a mini tho just cuz I thought it'd be easier to get accessories for it)

    12:10 A phone should be created to fit beautifully in the hand, that meant every part of screen being within reach of your thumb, otherwise, using the phone one-handed would be unwieldy and awkward, which isn't the type of good experience. My current phone is 145mm (that's what was called a "compact" in 2017), a year ago I had to find a phone for my mother, and I couldn't find something good less than 155mm (Honor 20). Now bloggers call 160+ a compact. Of course, sometimes appear some rare smaller devices, for example Asus Zenfone 8 (148mm), which doesn't look like successful one, but I can't say that I have a choice.

The only place you won't see ads is in your dreams at this point, and the advertising to content ratio is getting out of hand. Sneaky transitions and miniscule discounts are not worth it. I'm not telling anyone to stop posting them but for those who just simply came to enjoy a video, I am glad to continue doing what I do.. I have actually used a few PowerMac G4 towers an the idea of a silent, powerful G4 class computer was appealing. One PowerMac G4 had been dubbed the wind tunnel, I'll let you guess why. An office or a classroom populated by 20-30 loud computers will make you long for quiet. That many noisy computers will drown a teacher's voice and make normal conversations difficult, forcing everyone to talk louder which of course makes the problem worse. I have been in those environments both to work in and visit. Every manager admitted to never have considered the combined noise of dozens of machines in a relatively small space on top of the heat they produce. Don't forget, CRT monitors were also major heat sources... I recall one customer who installed dozens of super quiet iMacs to solve power, noise and space issues all a the same time.
    Now Apple is realizing Steve's dream of a quiet if not totally silent computer with the M1 cpu. The original Mac had no fan. When the Mac SE came out it was so noisy that Apple quickly replaced its fan with a much quieter model.

      @@davidjacobs6244 hardcore Apple fans would always prefer having an iPhone that they could hold with one hand since if they want bigger screen real estate there is always the iPad. And even with the dual screen option the iPhone is always very cramped. Gaining a few millimetres of screen space really doesn’t help a lot in terms of productivity as long as there is no real UI changes that accommodate the hardware. You can make an iPhone 12 Pro that has a 4 inch display and Apple fans will buy it since they want to hold it with one hand. I know the strategy making large screen phones since some Android guys might switch but in the end of the day they will come and go while Apple fans buy one product and another. So I think if Steve is still there he will insist making small iPhones.

      @@whatsindansgarage2542 That’s where you are wrong.I am a hardcore Apple fan and have had every generation of iPhone since the 3GS in 2009.I have much preferred the bigger screens since they were introduced with the iPhone 6 series.I do not think it’s that important to be able to use the phone one-handed.I have also had most generations of the iPad and love the 12.9” iPad Pro.Apple’s sales of larger iPhones prove that most users prefer them.Apparently, this year’s 12 mini is not selling well at all so far.People have got used to the much better battery life on the larger iPhones.

    • @whatsindansgarage2542
      @whatsindansgarage2542 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@davidjacobs6244 the question of “making what customers want vs telling them what they want” is always prominent in Apple. Steve Jobs had famously said that people don’t know what they want until they are told. Bigger iPhone might be driven up sales since this is what customers want. Before coming to the iPhone I had a Samsung Galaxy Note II. It has a six inch display but I rarely used the whole display since content wasn’t really made for a six inch display and they even had one-hand mode which in my opinion is counterintuitive. This was the introduction of phablet. It might be selling well since I think it is due to the mentality that bigger is better. Then Apple was making a larger iPhone in 2015 since I think that it was due the market where people wants a bigger phone. A bigger iPhone was made to respond to the market (the “what customers want” rather than “telling what they want”). But is this the best way making an iPhone? Yes bigger iPhone is a way to increase battery life but is this the only way to do so? There might be other reasons why iPhone 12 mini didn’t sell well but as long as there is the iPad the iPhone should always keep itself small. Since Apple is about a set of devices and not a one device that does it all. And there is a concern that a bigger iPhone will lead Apple in that direction.

      @@davidjacobs6244 he envisioned that Apple should have adopt latest and greatest Technologies he wasn't going to adopt something that was aging, however I disagree because there is time for Apple like to do its own thing, for example back in the 90s when everybody was doing separate pcs towers and monitors, they released the iMac, an all in one computer. Also for a while they didn't want to adopt Adobe Flash because it was Aging and HTML5 was the newer than Abode Flash, and was going to be the future moving forward, thus in 2020 when are reaching the end of Abode Flash, set to discontinued on December 31 2020.
      He wanted Apple to be it's best and created products that have the latest and greatest, however if they can see that it can be done differently, then they do it. If they saw that they can make something that no one has done, or has the potential of being something great, they do it.

As a die hard Apple user, I still find myself agreeing with way more of Jobs' ideas than the current Apple ideas... This being said it is crazy how fast ideas change. I remember when the iPhone was launched in 2007 and now today (I actually work at Apple now) when I mention it launched in 2007, Gen Z folks, when they aren't staring at Tik-Tok, look up and go, "it was THAT long ago?" I haven't run into a person who didn't know who Jobs was, but I imagine it's a matter of time.

    1.) Correct.
    2.) Incorrect. Steve wasn't wrong there, they simply didn't have the time to have it in place for the release of the first iPhone. Heck: They barely had a demo version of the OS ready for the presentation. Naturally, Steve sold the webapps version as the best thing ever instead of saying out loud that an App Store would come later in the presentation.
    3.) Correct.
    4.) Correct. However: The correction with the iPad mini came soon enough, and the iPad remained market leading by many percentage points since the iPad originally came out.
    5.) Correct, although his opinion is still valid, like massive sales of the first iPhone SE and now the iPhone 12 mini are showing.

    Anyone who believes Steve Jobs was ever wrong does not understand how the Reality Distortion Field functions.
    1.
    The G4 Cube is still the rarest and most expensive vintage Mac. Macintosh users are still clamouring for compact modular Mac. Meanwhile the SFF PC industry is booming, with many preferring a compact, minimalist Computer, housed in a DanCase A1 or SkyReach 4 embodying everything that the G4 Cube pioneered.
    2.
    The Sweet Solution was a sound idea. Google ChromeOS uses the same concept; most ChromeOS users prefer web-based apps to Android Apps. WebOS *only* supported web-apps. Most people agree that Native Apps have destroyed the open Internet.
    3.
    Yeah, Ping was a bad idea, but it was more a poor implementation, just like MobileMe.
    4.
    For people with enough disposable cash, a compact phone and a large tablet are more appropriate for their needs. What wasn’t anticipated was that the iPhone would appeal to people who could only afford/ only wanted one device. The iPhone SE is still a very popular product and the larger 12” iPad Pros are much more useful for tablet power users. 4x3 is still the best dimension for a tablet that gets rotated.
