The Rise and Rise of Raf Simons

  • Raf Simons just showed his Spring 2023 collection as his first collection in London. The collection was certainly divisive, but of course came with massive press that brought more eyes to the Raf Simons brand. Raf Simons as a company has been incredibly influential to the industry in this same was since its inception in Autumn Winter 1995 and hopefully will continue to influence fashion for many years to come

    Thank you for making these videos, i really enjoy your take on collections and evolution of aesthetics. I'd love to hear you talk about (designers like) Jil Sander and her immense contribution to fashion, that would be a very different affair today without her groundwork, and to hear your thought about why nobody seems to be able to do what she did - in regards to establishing a design aesthetic that lasts instead of chasing viral looks that nobody will admit to have liked, ten years from today ;)
    anyway, looking forward to your upcoming content xx

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely love Jil Sander, she really started the last solid label-aesthetically driven movement in fashion (Now its more trend focused). She contributed so much to fashion in minimalism, but I think it was her brand that stopped everyone from wanting a ‘brand aesthetic’ because the company fell so hard

    • @alek3941
      @alek3941 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@understitchYT Fair point and I have to say I agree. I admire enormously what she accomplished, but the label today has lost connection to what she was about, in my opinion. Also the quality of the garments, while still solid, isn't the same anymore. Make a fanboy happy and do a video on Frau Sander :D

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      While I agree the quality has dipped, I think its an industry wide thing as consumers have become more intewrested in labels and less in the quality that used to come with them. I think theyve evolved naturally with this change, whereas other brands (Burberry) have really struggled

    Very well written and presented. Invest $200 or so in a decent mic! Re: Raf, too bad I didn't invest in some pieces from those earlier collections when I got into fashion back in 2007. It was still hyped amongst fans but normal second hand pricing, it wasn't until rappers basically became forum fashion nerds that the prices skyrocketed. I wonder if any of his more recent collections will achieve similar cult status, they seem to be largely overlooked aside from maybe the Sterling Ruby collab and fw16. I miss Raf at Dior, especially after years of snooze worthy Chiuri collections. His work at CK was brilliant but the price points were too high, unfortunately an American "luxury" brand is a hard sell, especially if the clothes are primarily sportswear. Honestly think Raf needs to pause his own brand for a bit, he seems to be floundering a bit creatively, his references are all played out, his work at Prada is much fresher. I think he really benefits from the creative method of collaboration, forming a dialogue with existing design language and putting his own spin on it.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      I cant afford a mic right now, but thank you for letting me know I could improve it, Ive been trying to think of ways to improve so thats super helpful. I remember Raf in those days too, he had a sample sale in London and I didnt know about it until a week after whn I met a guy that went and he said it was totally empty. I couldnt believe it, but this was JUST pre-rapper blow up that made Raf impossible to get. I wonder if Kiko Kostadinov is going to fill in that retail space with his following often, but fashion in general is more widely talked about

    This video is so well researched and helps put into words what I love so much about his designs. I'm glad that you give your honest opinions good or bad about his shows, that's very refreshing. Raf has also had a huge influence on streetwear, which you touched on here with the camo bomber and the stan smiths but I'm surprised you didn't mention its edgy grandson, the parachute bomber. I think that piece was very forward thinking in the trends and street styles almost two decades later (although feel free to correct me if it comes from a different area!), or the I Heart NY sweater which was almost more beaten to death than the stans! If you ever do a directors cut of this I would watch it for hours, there's just so much to learn about him, his brand, and his collabs.

    I’ve owned a lot of main line and raf by Raf simons and I can say that the quality on most the RAF by Raf Simons pieces was amazing and very comparable to the mainline stuff.
    Not sure where the “poor quality” notion came from maybe there are some that I haven’t seen or felt. I’d say the reason that the brand didn’t stick was because it was supposed to be a more affordable line but was still very expensive. Some of the jacket I own from that line I believe retailed in 400-700 range so they weren’t much less than main line stuff.

      @@understitchYT it is understandable, likely he didn't want corporations to turn his name into a commodity.
      Everyone else sold out. Even Tom Ford ended up selling his name to Estée Lauder.
      Many of these big fashion phenomena have no heirs, no successors, which made me seriously consider having kids a bit earlier than I otherwise planned.

      Unfortunately, all of them might have to wait until after I have a bigger following so that I can guarantee the views, for CDG it will just take a long time to make that video because the company is so expensive, so I will need it to do well, and with the other two I would like to have a guaranteed initial audience just to help push the video because they’re not necessarily clickable names

    Great analysis as always!
    I'm so happy that I was able to buy the CK cowboy boots. I got them in pink patent leather..I wear them every chance I get! I've literally been asked by random people in NYC if I wanted to sell my boots to them on the spot. haha I love his work at Prada, especially, the FW 22 collection. I tried on the blue wool coat with the fur trims around the bottom and arms...the heaviest and most beautiful coat I've ever tried on...too bad it's literally a down payment for a house. haha Maybe I can purchase the coat off TRR or Grailed in the years to come!

      I AM SO JEALOUS YOU HAVE THOSE BOOTS!!!! His work at CK was my favourite Raf era but I literally couldnt get my hands on any of it. Still to thisday I check grailed and ebay etc for the pieces so Im so so so jealous you got those boots!
