The Rise and Rise of Miu Miu

  • Miuccia Prada is one of the most respected women in all of fashion for a reason. Her incredible intellect, business acumen and design philosophy stands head and shoulders above the rest in both Prada and Miu Miu. However, since its inception in 1992, Miu Miu has stood firmly in the shadow of Prada, even being priced 40-50% less like a diffusion line might be. But recently Miu Miu has turned a corner, speaking to young people in a way Prada has never directly done, thereby carving a new market for itself in Gen Z fashion, meaning its the most relevant pseudo heritage brand on the market.

    miu miu has always been a classic. pure and playful femininity displayed which represent a stark contrast to the rigid and minimalist look of Prada. It's interesting to see that it gained access to popular culture due to early 2000s nostalgia.

    • @understitchYT

      especially because of how overlooked Miu Miu was in comparison to Prada then. The 90s were Prada's real big heyday, so it makes sense, but Miu Miu has had such a comeback that its now starting to rival Prada in a way it has never been able to before. Especially because aesthetically I always saw them as overlapping very heavily, and in many collections they both had pieces, and looks, that could've easily been mistaken for the other. I think thats the real shame of the old miu miu, in that it just wasn't its own thing in its design and really if it wasnt for her family money and connections I think it would've folded in the early days, tho I am so SO happy it didnt

    As someone who is more into Asian streetwear Miu Miu is much more suited to our taste, conservative yet very playful and innocent.I’m a fan of their simplistic styles as well, the thing about most Asia women ‘ girls prefer simplistic looks yet they also desire something playful and unique about it. Cute is the theme they usually go for and Miu Miu is a hit among us bc of its own soft feminine and simple style, which I think it’s quite hard to grasp in Western countries as most of the consumers there go for more drastic looks which is perhaps why the brand wasn’t more popular there.

    • @understitchYT

      Miu Miu is popular in Asia and the west, but much more in Asia because their aesthetic works better for, exactly as you said, the preferred aesthetics of Asian women. Interestingly though, the clothes are more popular than the bags in Asia, but the bags are more popular than the clothes in the west

    Everybody is talking about sunglasses and bags, but my biggest thing has always been shoes. Literally, since the beginning of Miu Miu, their shoes have been significantly out there, beautiful and embellished, and very few other designers have this shoe focus except for maybe Balenciaga in the latter half of the 2010s, and of course, iconic shoes from McQueen, etc., but that still was not a focus. Miu Miu shoes have always been unique and beautiful and are always one of my favorite parts of the shows; I always look at the shoes. And in many editorials because of how amazing and interestingly designed they are. The first time I was introduced to Miu Miu was in Nicki Minaj's verse in madonnas song Bitch Im Madonna, where she says that's Miu Miu on my shoe. I'm under 20 so yeah, but Miu Miu shoes have always hit out of the park, and their very young feminine and fun look usually breathes life into me.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’re not wrong at all, and the glitter shoes have been a staple from miu miu for many many many many many years. It’s just in comparison to the sunglasses and the bags they are less profitable and therefore less impactful, so they didn’t make the cuts needed to make the video 16 minutes🤷

    • @sharmanitascos
      @sharmanitascos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@understitchYT I'm so glad I've entered the fashion critic side of youtube. I have been on my design journey since I went to school. I have learned so much about different brands, but I'm definitely in the Prada sphere; funny enough, I'm wearing Jil sander shoes right now, and I didn't even know the Prada group owned the brand. It does make a lot of sense, though, because a lot of Jil sanders' design follows a similarly modern, streamlined, but slightly conservative and simple language of Prada. I guess I'm very into their simple, usually less loose, formal modern design that is generally not flashy in an outward way but attention-grabbing and exciting design sense with cut and shape. The high level of precise detail, not prints, but precise physical pleating, cutting and bending with prints that go along really attracts me to brands like Prada and Miu Miu for their use of fabric, embroidery, embellishment, or jacquard to create a shape, pattern or image. When I see prints directly on top of the material and nothing is happening with the existing threads or construction, I feel im getting a superficial visual. I respect Miu Miu and Prada much more for relying on physical components to create the visual presentation of garments because it feels more real to me. What I like about Prada, Jil sander, and other highly articulated brands (especially Issey Miyake

      this was super interesting to read, and I totally get your point of view - though i wonder if its a finished thought became the ending paragraph is repeated?
      Nonetheless, I agree that Demna's work isn't particularly imeless on a piece by piece basis like Prada's is. But what I think he began is a new question for fashion, a movement of high-concept clothes that we have never seen before outside of fine art, so although I dont think each piece will last, I think the idea of it will. Similarly to how we remember only a few people from each art movement, I think we will remember Demna

    • @sharmanitascos
      @sharmanitascos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@understitchYT I dont understand why it repeated paragraphs, it was meant to end after I said "satisfaction and joy". Either way, I agree that demna will become someone to remember. he has earned a lot of attention and pieces like the knife boot and couture pieces certainly stand alone and aren't falling under a cartoonish overcast that I see happen through the way models are told to act and pieces like his trash bags and certain shoes. It is very valuable to poke fun at, mock, and humble any industry, especially one of high art/high cultural influence so it can defend itself by innovating and avoiding becoming stiff and hauty; I think he is doing this which I feel is nessasary. In you're future videos I hope you talk about Matthieu Blazy and Bottega Veneta because it certainly is having breakthroughs being perpetuated in culture through Azealia Banks and her song New Bottega, but the SS23 collection with the leather dresses towards the end was really technically and visually amazing, they also have carved out a distinct brand identity with the Ying & Yang triangular diagrid they've used in shoes/clothes and looks that are very distinct to Bottega Veneta, in my opinion much more recognizable than other upcoming brands and similar to the unmistakable quality of Chanel or Iris Van Herpen who I feel couldn't really be attributed to other houses.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I adore Blazy, he's really one of so few designers who are focused on craftsmanship, which I really appreciate as an alternative to the high-concept looks from others (I love both, but I love the dichotomy of having both most). Im so excited to see what he makes of the brand, but I 100% want to do a videp on Bottega in the future

    Not signing a western actress along with the asian girl was a wise decision. The western market is to saturated with “brand ambassadors”.. The position and title doesn’t carry weight effectively here in the west these days.

    • @understitchYT

      I promise you its even more saturated in Korea, each group has so many members and theyre all ambassadors of different brands, it gets so confusing to keep up with who is with who. Is it just me or did Miu Miu become more girly in the past few years? I know Miu Miu is the sub brand of Prada. And it's meant to target a younger audience. So the clothes look more girly and youthful. But just based on my personal observation Miu Miu was never this girly in the past. It's only recently that Miu Miu became more girly.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like it had always been girly, but the idea of what is and isnt girly I think has changed. When they were doing the 60s style coats in the 2010s and the ruffled dresses before that, thats what girly things looked like then because we were in this whole era of 'I'm not like other girls', so even the slightest girliness was percieved that way in comparison to the monochromatic minimalism of other brands. I feel like now in 2020 the idea of girliness is very different to that and miu miu evolved well with it

    I've known of miu miu for years but they never really caught my attention until almost every kpop idol was wearing their cropped skirts and sweaters or something inspired by that collection. hope the brand keeps its momentum going. although their recent collections are nice, I don't consider much of their looks to be "timeless" (cut/silhouette), which, at their price tag, could prevent more sales. i wouldn't want to splurge on a piece that I could recreate by following a 30 second tiktok tutorial.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว +99

      I don’t think Miu Miu was ever meant to be timeless really, I think that’s much more Pradas offering, whereas Miu Miu is more fun and carefree. I get why that would prevent sales, but I also think it would be attractive to people at the other end of the scale that have so much money that they don’t need to care, does that make sense?

    • @hannahthereseavila1565

      Miu Miu does have classic staples. They have collared tops, collared dresses, matching tweed sets, mary janes, ballerina inspired shoes and their matalesse bag. So you can find classic staples in Miu Miu. Assuming you like wearing those clothes.

    i think miuccia has been subtly playing with the idea of deconstruction for quite a while. i remember spring 2007 for Prada where she showed these ultra short dress/tops where she said she just didn't like the bottoms they made with it so they just forgone bottoms all together. and in spring 2010 that featured girly, couture-esque shapes but with unfinished hems.
    though, i do find myself less excited with both Miu Miu and Prada for the past seasons. i think both brands are looking into their archive and are more straightforward with how it references itself. i kinda miss its approach to design in the 2010s, where it proposes a new idea each season, while calling back to house codes as easter eggs.
    i also miss the 'ugly' in the ugly chic. everything has been quite clean, which is possibly an influence of Raf Simons in their collaboration..

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Was SS10 unfinished hems? I must've missed that entirely, but thats so interesting that she revisited that. I think Mrs Prada has been playing with self-referencing for a long time now, do you remember the half fire shirts from spring 2020 or the flame heels in AW18? That was a reference to the Spring 2012 collection (I had to look up these dates btw, Im not that talented, I remember the clothes, but never the dates)
      Theres a few like this, Im pretty sure the lipsticks have come up a few times, as have mechanical prints, so she definitely did self reference, but I think now with how much we have seen self referencing that its become very obvious when she does it. I like it, but like Kiko Kostadinov is now, she used to be known for reinventon, so I get why thats frustrating to see he change her design ethos.
      I also loved ugly fashion when that was a thing, but I think if it came back now, itd be Helmut Lang/ Alexander Wang/Jil Sander slim fit minimalism which is really not the 'fashionable' look any more

    • @rolandoivaltura5282
      @rolandoivaltura5282 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes. prada ss10 featured unfinished hems. i think miuccia incubates her ideas in prada and then brings it miu miu. that's also what i loved about her refenrencing in the past, as she takes those ideas and does something new with it. now, it feels like a reiteration of 90s prada.
      though i feel like fall is always a stronger season for prada, with a more harmonious combination of miuccia and raf's design sensibilities.

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think both she and the Prada group want it to be separate so much, but for a really long time because her design style is so distinct its too hard for them to differentiate them. I think the differentiation theyre seeing now has been something they've been trying to get to for a really long time, but I suppose we will never actually know what their plan is.
      I really agree that winter is almost always a stronger collection though and i think thats down to the way she handles woolens and jackets. Those short peacoats that often come back are such staples and I loved them from Prada along with the car coats from Miu Miu for so long

The clothing was weightless like in dream when Miuccia was a young student in university with a not care in the world. Recapture time when we were all young. It was nothing showstopping about it, but pure authentically. The fashion seen lost in the runway because they are real clothing look the best in small scale stores.

    “Having Yoona alone is not enough”. Me: know of Miu Miu after seeing yoona wear it 🤣 im Asian but live in the west, but I don’t see the west market these brands, so yes, I think K-pop is a much better marketing tool than everything else lol

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      Its an incredible marketing tool, but I worry the idols get randomly placed with labels sometimes, like often there is no connection between the groups visuals and the brand the member are ambassadors of’s visuals at all?

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  ปีที่แล้ว

      It feels like the bug labels are just using them for the Kpop selling power, which I think may hurt kpop in the long run

      @@understitchYT not sure, to me, K-pop follows trends, and K-pop evolves, I don’t see K-pop as a rigid one thing. They basically change concept every album lol. I’m not fashion savvy, so to me, as long as they make the piece look goddessy, that’s all it matter lol. I know of the brand, I’m aware of the brand. Would I buy them? If they are in my budget and I like the piece, sure. Point is now I know of them lol 😂

    I love your videos! Can we get Kenzo, Goyard, Moschino or Louis Vuitton next :)

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would LOVE to do a video on all four, Louis Vuitton is definitely on the near horizon because of the new designer, whoever they choose, I think it will be interesting to see how they transfer the house codes. Kenzo is having a bit of a moment too, Im glad to see it make a return to popularity. Goyard too is having a moment. But Moschino I LOVE, I love the early 1980s Moschino so much and I think Jemery Scott is the best designer for the job, but they've fallen from relevance recently, so Im waiting for their next big show (which I dont doubt will happen soon, Scott doesnt stay unseen for long 💪

      @@understitchYT Bro I agree Jeremy is the best and true Moschino isn’t that much in the spotlight but I did like the 2016 and 2017 fashion shows. I’m kinda new to fashion, I’ve recently been very interested and intrigued by it. God I can go on and on about this but thank you so much for this talk!

      Moschino’s anniversary catwalk the Jeremy did is my favourite collection of theirs EASILY but I surprisingly loved their SS23 show with the inflatables. I saw someone try to intellectualise it as a statement on inflation, but I think its just pure fashion fun, what did you think?

    • @karanspc
      @karanspc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@understitchYT I just saw the inflatables you were talking about tbh I’m not a fan of it but each to their own. But the theory that people are comparing it to inflation is interesting fs.

      @understitchYT  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I enjoyed its whimsy. Like, obviously none of those pieces will ever make it into stores, except the inflatable bags which are a re-release, but for a catwalk show I thought it was really fun. I'll be interested to see how the clothes are in retail, but I honestly just think they'll be more print stretch dresses 🙄
