Ilayaraja is one of those rare composers who is experienced in every single step of a music production right from composing the basic melody to conducting and mixing the final score. In an interview, SPB mentioned how Ilayaraja was very adamant about every single note and beat in his music being his own contribution and his alone. That drive led him to learn every single process before his debut. I'd say it takes a great amount of self confidence and drive to travel to Chennai without even knowing the basics of western music and notation. He learned western classical music and notations from Dhanraj master(I think Raja mentioned how he didn't even know the difference between a major and minor scale), was an assistant to G.K.Venkatesh. Ilayaraja mentioned in an interview that he would make a lot of mistakes during his time with G.K and the other musicians would laugh at him. Little did those people know that they were laughing at a man who would later be hailed as "Isaignani" and "Maestro". What amazes me is that he's still an active composer at 77 years of age. And his music is still such a delight to listen to. He's composed more than 4000 songs for a total of 1000+ movies and his creativity is still very much in tact.

I am from Kerala.. I was a die hard fan of Oscar Winner till 2008..When I start listening (Sorry addicting) to IR, I realised that Oscar winner is Good Sound Engineer, not a Good Composer. Oscar winner has been intelligently Improvising IR's method of orchestration and arrangements with Good beat soundings. In many songs, we can see he follows IR's style. He spends 2 years to complete a tune, but IR finishes full movie songs & RRA in 2 days.. Those who have not watched CNBC's tribute to ilayaraja in TH-cam, its a must watch. Kamal Hasan realised, Fasil recognized, Balki respected, Sathyan Anthikad revisited, Bala reaping this legend's innate talent in music. In today's "copy sundar music generators", using Different buds from software library must shame themselves because they are not referring the composing encyclopedia available at their fingertips.. Steal it even from his RR,you will get hell lot of inspirations. 1000 songs, none of the songs are sounding similar. This genius deserves more appreciations.. I think many 90s kids might have come back to this Maestro's Music..
I spend more time with his music than with my parents, wife and kids. Just think about it. We drive almost 3 hours a day and we listen to his music for all those 3 hours. Do we really think, we spend that much with other family members? Probably not. I get goose bumps when I listen to most of his songs. When I saw him in person at Prasad Music Studio in Chennai, I almost cried and got his blessings. When I talked to him for like 15 seconds, he was paying attention to my words and smiled. I was truly blessed to meet him in person.

This one is the clear documentary about ilayaraja i guess , I hardly understand what he try to say in other interviews , am an atheist and i listening to ‘polla vinayen’ whenever I feel depressed or stress , believe me after 20 minutes the music done something extraordinary which the stress tablets can’t do ! I am devoted to Ilayaraja music bcos I encountered few divine moments in my life such as while getting 'arthi' at Pashupathinath temple and every time I go to see or even when my mind is saturated of Shiva there will be tears of bliss flowing unnoticed. Similarly, I drive almost 2-5 hours a day in car and most of the time I would be blissfully in tear because of Raja Sir music. It is divine
