Shivering Timbers Review, Michigan's Adventure CCI Wooden Roller Coaster | CCI's Best Coaster

  • Shivering Timbers is the star attraction at Michigan's Adventure. This Custom Coasters International creation is arguably the company's best roller coaster. This CCI feels more like a wooden hyper coaster with its towering camelbacks and endless series of bunny hills. And after my most recent rides on it, I think it is CCI's best roller coaster. Find out why in this review!

Great video, brotha. Grew up in metro Detroit and my Dad took us here every summer from about 1992 on... He loved this ride, and going up north to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes was his favorite place to go. He got sick (Alzheimers) and passed on 5 years ago, but seeing anything Michigan's Adventure related makes me smile.

I went to Michigan’s Adventure for the first time, and rode Shivering Timbers 7 times this past summer on a warm rainy day. This is definitely an elite woodie, and it’s not even close. Every hill delivered glorious airtime, and has some of the strongest sustained laterals on any wood coaster I’ve ridden, and the ride ops that day were amazing, letting us stay on the train if no one was waiting for the row we were on. If I ever find myself in Michigan again, you can bet that I’ll pay Michigan’s Adventure another visit.

Until recently, I forgot how well of a company CCI was. A lot of their coasters were good and sometimes they would knock it out of the park like with Shivering Timbers.

Agreed: # 1 CCI. The Boss was my first CCI, so I was assuming that they were a terrible manufacturer. Then I rode GhostRider, then Boulder Dash, and I realized that CCI could be great. Then came Shivering Timbers, and it instantly became my favorite CCI, and still is. It may seem like a simple layout, but like you covered in this review, the execution is excellent, and there actually is variety with the different types/shapes of the airtime hills. You did this coaster justice with your review!

Now from 1998 through 2016, the next element was trick track. This was an element commonly found on old wooden roller coasters where a piece of straight track would rapidly bank riders back and forth. While the element sounded cool on paper, it was a nightmare as it aged. I never experienced this element on Shivering Timbers, but I did experience it on Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce. This element was brutal when those abrupt laterals were paired with jackhammering, and from the accounts I saw of Shivering Timbers in 2015 and 2016, it sounds like it rode identically. I actually just started my job at Mi Adv and I'm working maintenance on Shivering Timbers as a track inspector/carpenter. It's truly astonishing with how much their just is of that coaster. It is easily the most impressive coaster I've ever seen. While it's not the tallest or fastest, but you can see how loved and cared for it is, it is truly something special.

This coaster is top tier in my book. It's my 2nd favorite wood coaster, and sits in my top 5 easily. The airtime is ridiculous, and the speed is maintained so we'll. The helix is butter smooth and forceful. I even found that if you lean forward on those 2 pot holes, it greatly reduces the impact felt. This is the best CCI I've ridden, and this is at the closest Cedar Fair park for me. It alone makes the trip to MA worth it.

It's amazing that a coaster that long only has one lift hill and a drop of only 107'! It's length is also beaten by T-Express by just a mere ONE FOOT, yet T- Express has a drop of 151', not the 107' drop Shivering Timbers has. That's why Shivering Timbers has the longest prime ride time duration (at least 92 seconds) of any currently operating wooden coaster with one lift hill other than The Voyage. Its layout is also based mainly on pure straight airtime. Its only major complaints are the jackhammering on the uphill sections, but it looks to be a bucket list coaster for me.
I'll be honest: I've never ridden a Gravity Group coaster, and the only CCI/CGI coaster I've ridden is Ghostrider in 2019. But this looks to be the BEST CCI ever made. Thanks for this awesome review, and please remember: the drop of Shivering Timbers is only 107'. Considering the length, airtime, and duration of Shivering Timbers: that stat (considering the others) is AMAZING to me and ought to be amazing to every coaster enthusiast. Thanks for posting!

I think it's so efficient due to its back of turns. Wooden coasters lose most of their momentum from under banked and sharp angle turns, so this out and back camelback layout is able to keep that speed much better than a twister of the same height

I heard so many great things lately. Defiantly a top 10 woodie I want to ride. Its like a B&M Hyper but it has like triple the amount of airtime and its a CCI. I heard it has way better airtime than Voyage. Probably will always be Michigan's best and its what this poor park needed. I think Uncle Nate from El Toro Ryan goes to far with putting it in front of Twisted Timbers, Skyrush, and Superman. I could see it being better than Skyrush but not the other 2 but still, the infinite amount of airtime as well as the good positives and lateral helix at the end and the pacing is absolutely fantastic.

I wish Cedar Fair never bought Michigan's Adventure. It would probably be comprable to Cedar Point or Six Flags Great America in terms of it's coaster lineup had it remained independant (ie sort of like Hersheypark). Additionally, Woulverine Wildcat has a good layout taking lots of inspiration from Phoenix. The problem is it doesn't have buzbars and it hasn't been maintained all that well because it isn't the star attraction but it has the potential to be an at least above average woodie.

    • @CanobieCoaster
      @CanobieCoaster  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree the park likely would have been better had Cedar Fair not bought it. There was an interview with the Michigan's Adventure GM a few years ago where she said this park is targeting the family demographic since the nearby Cedar Point is where all the adults want to go. If the park is going for the family market, they can get away with adding a lot less.

@@CanobieCoaster "Appealing to families" would mean occasionally adding a good family coaster like Merlin's Mehem at Dutch Wonderland or Phoenix at Deno's, or even an SBF hamster wheel/spinner that can appeal to all members of the family. When the Mochigan's Adventure GM says that it's just the toned down version of "we don't add anything because even an inkling of a possability of the park potentially competing with Cedar Point is bad".

That's a bummer if it got rough.

@@CanobieCoasterit is rougher and dropped in my rankings, but it’s still amazing. It’s more of a shuffle than jackhammering, but I also have a generally high roughness tolerance.

The coaster that killed Michigan adventures, cedar fair bought the park just because it's not cedar point.

Just had my first experience on this ride today....
And all I can say is, this park is not worth a 5 hour drive.
    Way to expensive...
Shivering Timbers was the roughest experience I've ever had on a roller coaster...nothing fun about the painful airtime.....titan track the whole thing.
    Maybe I'll come back then

What do you think? Would you like to go to Michigan's Adventure again, and especially to ride Corkscrew?

I love Shivering Timbers. Corkscrew is ok.

If I ask you, do you wish you could have experienced Shivering Timbers with the element? What do you think?

No, the airtime hill is nice and comfortable.
