After my visit in August of 2021 I’d say Michigan’s Adventure is a good park. Shivering Timbers is elite, and the rest of the lineup is just fine. The atmosphere is solid, and I love the lake in middle of the place. I’d say this park isn’t terrible, but isn’t great either, and definitely a super solid park and if Cedar Fair can give them Wicked Twister and another new coaster, such as a new age Vekoma it could be a fantastic theme park.

    • @ParkPros
      @ParkPros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Yeah it's lineup would be at least comparable to the other parks with one or two more solid additions.

Only one problem: this isn’t a small park. It’s 250 acres, around the same size as Six Flags Magic Mountain. The park does very little with that massive amount of land, less so than much smaller parks (which are praised) such as California’s Great America (100 acres), Knott’s Berry Farm (57 acres) and Holiday World (121 acres). People don’t criticize this park because it’s small. They criticize it because of its operations, poor ride lineup and lack of atmosphere.

@@triple7marc We can actually blame Cedar Fair for that, apparently Shivering timbers was part of a Phased expansion of the park before Cedar Fair bought it, Shivering Timbers was Phase one, and Phase two would have included a Morgan Hyper, but Cedar Fair bought the park and canceled those plans, presumably to remove competition with Cedar Point, since they did the same with Geauga Lake

It’s so crazy how similar it is to geauga lake too (the layout that is) and the water park being connected with the park (prior to geauga lake buying seaworld and moving it to other side of lake). You nailed it on the head though with the keeping it a smaller regional park so it doesn’t compete with their crown jewel park. Once they bought out geauga lake I knew it was going to be a matter or time before they dismantled it. It’s unfortunate too because it was a great regional park with a ton of room to grow (I believe it was one of the biggest theme parks in the world once they bought out sea world and expanded 700+ acres). It was just a matter of time before it got dismantled though considering how close it was to CP and knew they wouldn’t want the extra competition within a 2 hour drive 🤷‍♂️ all I know is I surely miss the park and wish my children would’ve gotten to experience it the way I did as a kid

I think what a lot of people miss about these small parks is that the familiarity of the place can be really crucial and if you expand too much you can ruin the things your main customer base love about their home parks. I loved geauga lake as a kid, but my last visit was after the park had been mutated and what was once a beautiful park had a sky line of these monstrous coasters that did not fit the park at all. Every ounce of heart and integrity just seemed completely suffocated and before too long everyone in town just stopped going. We didn't want an s tier level park that catered to enthusiasts, we just wanted our regular park.

A few points to make Cedar Fair's lack attention look silly:
1a.) The population of Muskegon County is 173,000 and growing. You cited just the city of Muskegon ;)
1b.) People from Holland and Grand Rapids make day trips to Muskegon/Grand Haven all the time, especially for MI Adventure.
1c.) Kent County were Grand Rapids is located has 656,000 residents, with Newago, Ottawa, and Oceana counties (directly connected to Muskegon) having an additional 366,000 people.
1d.) If it's not clear from above, there's 1.1 Million people within a 45 minute drive of the park. Technically more than Cedar Point... But CP is also between Toledo and Cleveland, and 2 hours from Detroit.
2.) Cedar Fair owns about 152 Acres with about 42 Acres unused.
The Park 41.20 Acres (Rides, Waterpark, Walk ways, food areas, etc)
    Operations 17.25 Acres (Employee Areas)
    Parking 28.15 Acres
Main Pond 9.00 Acres & Other Water 14.88 Acres
There's 550+ Acres of undeveloped land that could be purchased that's contiguous to the existing property. (Could be 2x the size of Cedar Point)

I definitely believe that if MA was either independent or owned by a 3rd party outside of CF/6F (I know they're merged now), They could be a much bigger contender to Great America and at least compete somewhat with CP. Another small fact, Grand Rapids metro has recently entered into the top 50 largest metros in the country, as well as one of the quickest growing cities as well.

I can see the ride lineup hate. It’s never going to see much investment because it’s a 400 mile round trip to anywhere else with a coaster. The majority of Michigans population are closer to cedar point, I’m all for seeing some investment and spreading the crowds. My daughter loves the place and we live close enough to go all the time now so I’ll already be spending half my summer at the water park. I sure would dig some variety.

I know you probably are focusing on the roller coasters but you didn't mention the water park (which has no additional charge) which is half the fun. With a good selection of water slides, three wave pools And the funnel of Fear for those who want a thrill ride its one of my favorite parts of the park. (And honestly it's the best water park I've been to) and if you want to spend a little extra you can rent a cabana in the water park to sore your stuff and rest occasionally,( though you need to reserveahead) it makes a fun and relaxing day.

...And one thing every reviewer fails to mention is that Michigan's Adventure has a really solid water park and that is most of the reason why people go there.

I visited this park back in July 2019, and I must say, it is amazing. Took 4 hours to get there from Sandusky, Ohio, where Cedar Point is. This is one of the only videos of Taylor's that I disagree with.
Regardless, there are a few rides I didn't like:
The Wolverine Wildcat (Too rough in my opinion)
Swan Boats (We got caught on the rope, and we had to be pulled off of it by a boat by the employees running it)
Corkscrew (Eh...while it was cool, it seemed way too short compared to the Corkscrew at Cedar Point).

As a Michigander on the east side of the state, it’s hard to get excited going to the west side to visit when CP is less of a drive. I found my one time going there to be a pleasant experience. Yes the coaster lineup sucks but a great water park does help the park’s reputation. Maybe Cedar Fair would put Wicked Twister to “upgrade” the park. Coaster Studios are one of my most-watched coaster channels, but I think Taylor & co can be a little spoiled sometimes. I thought Michigan's Adventure was a nice, clean park in a beautiful setting. Their dispatch times did leavea a little be be desired, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself there and I was just greatful to get a chance to go. That was 2018 and my only other park visit since was a 2019 visit to Iowa's Adventureland. No amument park visits last year and probably none this year.
I became spoiled with an average of 2-3 visits annually between 2014 and 2017, but that was with 2 seperate groups of friends who both went their seperate ways after 2017.
Prior to 2013, I average one trip every 4 years and I have no idea how long this current drought will last as life iteslf overall seems to have taken a dive.
I'm not complaininga bout Taylor being "ungreattful" or anything like that, I'm just saying he's spoiled.
However, some of comments from random people on coaster forums can really get to me. Some are heavily dripping with entitlement and audacity. LOL They expect for the parks to cater to them in all of their weekly visits while there are others whow would love to just make it to the park once this decade.

Grand Rapids is one of the fastest growing cities in the Midwest & Detroit & Chicago are within a 3 hour drive from Michigan’s Adventure.
I think the real reason why Cedar Fair won’t invest in it heavily is because they want Michigan to have an relatively new inferior amusement park in comparison to Ohio jk lol

  • @bf9142ftw

Does anyone know how much of the area Cedar Fair owns? It'd be a dream for me, for them to add at least one more coaster, a decent woodie or a steel one. Michigan's Adventure is never going to be Cedar Point... But at least give us one more coaster. I've been begging that for years 🤣
Either for MA or for any other bigger park, I think it'd be a cool feature to have a whole-park coaster. One that can do all sorts of crazy loops and inversions and such as a top-end coaster, and maybe even try going in and out of other coasters and water attractions and such, and just get around the whole park perimeter. It'd be one way of adding a new coaster, with using only minimal added real estate for the coaster housing and the area for track supports.

Nice review. I liked a lot of what you pointed out. I have to disagree with Shivering Timbers being better than anything at Knott's or King's Island lol. I also have to admit as of two days ago, all of their top three coaster are among the roughest I've ever experienced keeping Timbers FAR from my top three list. I can see it's a great ride, but not in the condition it's in as of June 2024. Front seat is just manageable, but back of the train is a hard no thanks lol. Curious if you have been to Waldameer or Knoebles - both had fantastic wooden coasters with NO potholes. Timers has at least three and the infamous Mean Streak was never anywhere near this rough. The atmosphere was pleasant and nice, but beautiful would be a bit of a stretch of the imagination. Park also lacked interesting/unique food options -- not even fresh cut fries or cheese on a stick! - and had zero live shows and/or attractions. No fun house, haunted house or dark rides?!?!?! It's saving grace is the waterpark and lack of crowds. It's a fun day for sure but falls short of an actual amusement park experience. Cedar Fair (or Six Flags?) doesn't need to build a huge roller coaster or anything but they need to take far better care and pride in those coasters and get REALLY CREATIVE with the rest of the park and whatever budget they have. A great park has to offer something you can not find anywhere else or it falls into the "meh" category. Waldameer and Knoebles are of similar size but somehow pull off a top tier visit Michigan's Adventure can't quite deliver.

Personally, I haven’t been to MA, but I wouldn’t mind going. I love roller coasters. Do I think that MA is worth someone’s money and time? Yeah, I do!
