All offense intended, but the OP is NTA. Hiding things that emotional is a bad idea, but of course hiding things is never a good idea. "Samantha" isn't as much of an adult, as we learn later in the story, that she has been seen as. However, something is telling me that Billy knew he was infertile.... and that is another entire can of worms.
