I would have loved to see a session zero of them making characters to see how the discussion came to him playing Zuk-ra. It could have even just been a comfort thing when rping live.
Everyone: DANTE BASCO!?!?! Me: IFY NWADIWE?!?!? (Not a knock on Dante, I've just seen Ify in a few other niche places and was pleasantly surprised to see him here. 😀)
Having these known and even _Avatar_ associated personalities actually playing a bit through their pilot episode (and bits of character creation), looks like such a fun way to go! 🏔🔥 🌊🌪️ _MORE!_
@@patrickcox8990 He mean's like Vox Machina, because that show is literally an animated adaptation of the events and story that happened during Critical Role's play of D&D. Translating the events from a tabletop game live play to animation is different than just "like the last airbender".
As a first time DM and ttrpg player, I'm watching these to get a good idea of how to organize the game and I far prefer this especially since it's all story building at this point but with more acting and interaction than the rules necessarily dictate.
It's how the system is designed. The game is designed around fiction first, events in conversation second, making rolls to determine moments of uncertainty almost dead last. The end goal of a Avatar Legends session is for it to feel like you just participated in an episode of the show, which includes with everyone coming up with ideas for how to approach potential scenes. The job of the GM is to give the party of heroes chances to make a difference and act heroic, rather than straight simulating a bog standard rpg on the tabletop.
I love how Boen is basically the actor for Toph in that crappy play the gaang saw that one time lmao Also... Ezra when he sees the bad minister guy sneak off suspiciously "We got em... we got em... yeah. 😈" (perfect excuse for a meme 😆)
I wish they would've chosen a different show for Ify's credit other than Critical Role just due to the fact that you can't find the episode of Critical Role that he was on
I wish one of them had played a Non-Bender. I know it was mentioned in some stuff that you could have a Weapons or Tech background, and I'm VERY personally invested/concerned about how they're balanced against Benders. Most of the stuff I've been seeing around this game seems to be downplaying that aspect of the lore/gameplay....
I've yet to play the system, just read through the rulebook, but there isn't much difference between benders and non-benders except what difference you make. There are obviously techniques unique to each, but what they can actually do is only limited by the story (hopefully I understood your comment correctly).
From my experience playing PbtA games like masks, there's not really any heavy mechanical difference between characters with or without powers besides roleplaying stuff. And yeah, I agree that it's a shame there isn't any non bender in this party. I found myself thinking on what I would have played in this case if I had a party like this and thought one of those archers from the fire nation would have been a cool non bender concept to take inspiration from, since they dont really make a lot of appearances in the series
Chiming in as someone whose looked through the techniques etc, the different fighting styles primarily focus on RP'ing a fight rather than actually having any real mechanical strength. It isn't like D&D where a spellcaster having flight and teleport is super OP mechanically than a fighter that can just hit things 100 different ways. There isn't "health" or anything in the system, and it is just a matter of how you frame things in the fiction. For example, let's say there is a window high up on a wall. A fire bender might propel themselves up with their flames. A water bender might attempt to make climbing spikes made of ice (or freeze the wall to provide handholds) and scale the wall. A technology expert might use a grappling hook. A weapons expert might attempt to use their weapons in order to create handholds and climb up. All of the above would be attempting to make a "rely on skills and training" roll, and be on the overall same level of difficulty in the attempt. The difference is how they utilize said tools in order to approach the problem in the fiction. The big difference in characters lies in the playbook, which offers different moves, stat differences, and avenues of growth. It is very downplayed, because it is inherently meant to be a lesser part of the approach to the overall character creation process. Being a bender or not is much more focused on how to approach RP scenarios, rather than anything balance-wise.
Wait?? what? Lili??! I love her!! Becca? I also love her!! Ify?!?! I love him! DANTE?!? wtaf!! JENNIE!?! I mean whut?! Ok. Now I will just breathe and watch. It's fine. We're all fine here.
4:10 I'm sorry, but the second I heard the Air Benders were "very serious", I got instantly thrown out of immersion in disbelief... Even Uncle Iroh, who had never met one before Aang, had said that they had been known for their sense of humor. (I'm going to un-pause and hopefully get some better context of what's going on for stagnant Air Benders to become a thing. maybe it was an Eastern temple thing...)
I mean, the monks at Aang's temple aside from Gyatso (and even him at points) are quite serious, especially Monk Tashi. With unrest brewing, they can't afford to be so happy-go-lucky.
It feels so weird attaching Ify to Critical Role when he was on maybe two episodes like eight years ago. Compared to Dropout/College Humor where he's been more active
The full actual play episode was released yesterday but it was posted on the Avatar Studios YT channel: th-cam.com/video/VU7NjD5MxW4/w-d-xo.html PS - I work for Magpie Games that designed/published this game and I’m so happy reading everyone’s reactions to this!
this system just doesnty feel righ to me. no rolling, no chance, to attempts, they just say what happens and what they do and they succeed at it. This doesn't feel like you are playing a game together it just feels like they are telling you what is happening
You actually just described the core philosophy of the game. The creators first and foremost wanted this to be a collaborative storytelling game which is why the dice are less involved and streamlined so as to focus more on the characters stories themselves without muddying the pace with mechanics
Waterbending… royalty… on the streets? I could see fire nation or earth kingdom but water tribe’s fairly family oriented/loyal 😅 and “OH’-muh-shu”? There’s so many things wrong… would recommend watching the show you’re tryina roleplay :P
Man Dante's really taking a step out of his comfort zone playing an outlaw firebender.
never done that before
I wonder if he'll have a troubled past, maybe trying to earn his families love while being deeply conflicted about right and wrong
The difference is this new character was actually banished! Unlike his previous character who was just banished
😂
I would have loved to see a session zero of them making characters to see how the discussion came to him playing Zuk-ra. It could have even just been a comfort thing when rping live.
Dante is playing a banished fire bender with a dark past and a chip on his shoulder 😂😂😂
Could say he has the SCARS of his past haunting him…hmm…sounds awfully familiar…
Ezra: "Y'all ain't from around here, huh?"
No, they're clearly from the Flyer Nation.
Everyone: DANTE BASCO!?!?!
Me: IFY NWADIWE?!?!?
(Not a knock on Dante, I've just seen Ify in a few other niche places and was pleasantly surprised to see him here. 😀)
I saw Dante: Oh hell yeah!
I saw Ify: This is perfect.
Same! I’ve been such a big Ify fan ever since I saw him on Dimension 20: Escape From the Bloodkeep
Same lol
Literally me, i see him in EVERY place and i go like "IS THIS IFY?!?!?!!??!?!"
I do love hearing Basco's voice, but im always hyped to see Nwadiwe at a ttrpg game!
Boin: "I can tell you all about the Earth Kingdom Sages."
Everyone Else: "No time for that!"
Boin: 😞
"Where did she come from?"
"I come from everywhere."
"...that's physically impossible."
😂😂😂
17:12
Lol Dante just made a character mix of Jet and Zuko😆😆his two fave characters😍
Becca, Ify, Jennie, AND Dante?!?!?!?! This cast is STACKED
Dante playing a banished Firebender😂 if it works, do it again. It's still amazing🔥
I'm only 10 seconds in, and I need to stop a moment and geek out. Whaaaat is with this new multi-generational intro? It's amazing and I love it!
Having these known and even _Avatar_ associated personalities actually playing a bit through their pilot episode (and bits of character creation), looks like such a fun way to go! 🏔🔥 🌊🌪️

It would be amazing if this was turned into an actual animated show like Vox Machina and they all actually voice their characters
you mean like the last airbender....

Lili!!!
That's what I was thinking, I wish I did our session 0 more like this!
As a first time DM and ttrpg player, I'm watching these to get a good idea of how to organize the game and I far prefer this especially since it's all story building at this point but with more acting and interaction than the rules necessarily dictate.
21:52 When Rioshon appeared on the scene, I squeaked like a little child excitedly watching a new episode of Avatar :D :D :D
So proud of Lili and so lucky she's our group's forever GM 😊
I hope this continues, I haven’t seen people play this game, and I really want this game to get bigger and better.
dante shall forever have the voice of a teenager and i love it.XD
Becca's character is completely unhinged and I love her lolol
I already want more of these! Can this be a whole produced series?
Seconded.
...ed
probably not
I love how the goal is shared with the players and that the players can add to the story

Obviously Dante is great but I was surprised by how much I loved the others as well!
I love how Boen is basically the actor for Toph in that crappy play the gaang saw that one time lmao
Also...
Ezra when he sees the bad minister guy sneak off suspiciously
"We got em... we got em... yeah. 😈" (perfect excuse for a meme 😆)
I can’t not hear Zuko when Dante speaks lmao this was so much fun
Some day I'll gona mage a Dante Basco mentioning fire supercut. Love being here, I enjoy yall!
Loving these characters so far! Can't wait to see this play out!
Loving the energy of this lovely group of people, super excited to see more!
I've been doing an actual play series of Avatar Legends on my channel and we've really been enjoying the game!
I wish they would've chosen a different show for Ify's credit other than Critical Role just due to the fact that you can't find the episode of Critical Role that he was on
He’s been on a lot of D20, but I wonder if Dimension 20 isn’t recognisable enough
This cast is stacked! I can’t wait to see more
Can’t wait to watch this whole thing!
This is a fun cast!

Is it me or dante sound a bit like zuko , it fits perfectly with his firebender character
Wait?? what? Lili??! I love her!! Becca? I also love her!! Ify?!?! I love him! DANTE?!? wtaf!! JENNIE!?! I mean whut?! Ok. Now I will just breathe and watch. It's fine. We're all fine here.
Becca is FEELING her role omg
Huh, Dante's really trying something new huh? An outlaw firebender is pretty fresh from him
I have literally played this dnd game in middle school. Played a full Avatar themed campaign at age 13, love this!
That was so fun to watch, can't wait for next session

My guess is they’ll add it once it goes full release, since it’s only early access for backers for now
Dante needs to restore his honor! 😂

Dante really likes Jet X3 and made a maybe possible Jetko child.. hm.. designwise.
It feels so weird attaching Ify to Critical Role when he was on maybe two episodes like eight years ago. Compared to Dropout/College Humor where he's been more active
Dante!
Yes? :D
Aren’t airbenders typically fun and playful?
Boin must be one of Bolin's anscestors😂
maybe do a little magic lol, i dunno why that made me laugh. i know what she meant but it was just gold for some reason
Why is this video unlisted?
The link to the full game doesn't work :(
Is the world building aspect of this in the playbook? Because this setup was kinda cool 😌
Oh yes. I need moar!
What character sheets are you all using?
I want to play this sooo bad
Wow ok there's a lot more to RP that I thought
is there more sessions?
...................all i can hear is prince zuko

Does anyone have the link to the next upcoming episode?

Did you made this scenario or is it in official books? I would love to watch but I don’t want to have any spoilers before my game ☺️
Let's GO
Will there be a part 2?
this system just doesnty feel righ to me. no rolling, no chance, to attempts, they just say what happens and what they do and they succeed at it. This doesn't feel like you are playing a game together it just feels like they are telling you what is happening
There is rolling, just not nearly as much as say, d&d
You actually just described the core philosophy of the game. The creators first and foremost wanted this to be a collaborative storytelling game which is why the dice are less involved and streamlined so as to focus more on the characters stories themselves without muddying the pace with mechanics
Rufio! Rufio! RU FI OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Will there be more of it coming? Or will it stop just on session zero?
Ru-Fee-OOOO!
Where are the other episodes?

“omah shoo”
The quality of the audio is... distracting. I want to watch this so badly but I can't get past it.
Waterbending… royalty… on the streets? I could see fire nation or earth kingdom but water tribe’s fairly family oriented/loyal 😅 and “OH’-muh-shu”? There’s so many things wrong… would recommend watching the show you’re tryina roleplay :P
Jennie *played a character* in the show but ok...
Whoever did your set design has a classy sense of taste. Very well done!
Is this canon?
