  • We've had some questions about starting a mule so when I ran across this footage, I decided to post it for you. This will be the first of 3 parts. Pat worked Bella over a 3 day period culminating in riding her outside. Bella had been used as a pack mule and had not had a very good start. In this video, she's 9 years old. Stay tuned for Part II. Thank you for watching! For more information on what we have to offer, head over to our website www.thediscipli... . I’m a carpenter so I am used to dealing with frustrating things for hours every day. It definitely has improved my stamina and patience with training my animals and children. I spent an hour with my wife’s horse this morning and made great progress. I guess my point is that you can draw on patience you have developed in one area of your life and apply it to others.

    This was a 2 fer for me, I had the benefit of watching you train a mule from horseback but what I was most impressed by was the interaction of you and your bridle horse in the training of the mule. To watch you move about the round pen with what looked like little effort, having your horse respond to your every cue and move you just as if it was you on the ground and not you and your horse. Your horse was your legs and sometimes even your arms. It was a real pleasure to watch.
    The training to make this horse so responsive is what this channel is all about.
    You are an incredible horseman Pat, thank you for the show and keep up the good work.
    Is that Uma that you are riding?
    From Cape Cod.

      Yes that is Uma. She was the last bridle horse that Pat made. She now resides in Pennsylvania where she is used in dressage, hunter paces, jumping, and trail riding. Her owner is now perfecting the Spanish Walk. Thank you for watching!

    This was fun to watch. I've never trained on a mule before. Interesting to see how you did this.

    It looks unbeleivable, but I did the same with my four months foal, but from the ground, first day putting halter on it. Only first day it was some resistent, but when you do everyting right, on second day and forever your foal will follow you with trust and without resistant. Thank you for video, it is a super good job you did!

    thanks for this good lesson. can you show us alabama cowboys a close up of your palm concho and how it fits on your rein?

    • @edwarnock4534
      @edwarnock4534 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know about Pat's personal preference on palm conchs, but most are oval shaped with a length of two to two and a half inches long a an inch to an inch and a quarter wide. Usually have a ring on top and bottom to attach your reins to the bottom and romal to the top. They are often made with sterling silver, brands and initials are common on them.

    I’d love to ride that little mule. I am sure you put a handle on him.
    You said it a couple times. That the mule is smart. Looks that way. He may be booger’s but it also looked like he trusted you.

    Pat watching you train has been awesome; I have a question and that is, how do you train your horse to the bridle? Thank you in advance for any ideas. L.Baumer

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer to that question could fill volumes and is a little different with each horse. The short answer is that the horse is started in the round pen just like this mule. Then its ridden for around 3 weeks in a rope halter. Next is a series of every decreasing bosals starting off generally with a 5/8 diameter. Finally ending up with a bosalito which goes under the bridle. Once the horse is riding almost entirely off of the rider’s body, the horse goes straight up to the spade bit. This method is something we reserve for young horses that have never been ridden before. Older horses that have already been ridden in a bit of some kind are trained differently and don’t seem to achieve the same level of lightness and responsiveness as the colt that goes “jaquima a freno.”

    Pat, did you throw a Hulahand loop on that mule ? Or maybe I don’t know what a Hulahand is.....maybe you could enlighten us on that throw .

      One of the shots was a Houlihan. The mule would have been going left to right.

    How would your approach differ on a mature mule that had never been handled much at all before? Pretty much the same?

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bella was a 9 year old ex-pack mule at the time we shot this video. So yes, it would be the same program for any older mule that is being started...

    Do you think you could Get a mule riding as good as your horses? Or are they just half ass horses all together...lol..

    • @PatnDebPuckett
      @PatnDebPuckett  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think mules can be trained to be just as handy in most situations. As with any animal, there are some mules that are faster, more agile, etc than some horses and vice versa. The problem I’ve seen is that people don’t give mules the same consideration as horses. They schlep along like they don’t need to ride well because “it’s just a mule.” So mules get a bad rap. For certain jobs in certain terrain, I would choose a mule over a horse every time. I’ve seen mules spin and slide and do flying lead changes and compete at a high level in a dressage ring so it just depends on how high a bar you set for them.
