  • I treat a mule exactly the same as I treat a horse. Mules seek leadership just like a horse, and they learn through release. Many people see mules and defiant, but I like to think of them as DEFINITE. They are concerned with keeping themselves safe more than anything, so I have to learn to work WITH him by releasing his tries rather than getting into an argument with him.
Many people aren't aware that I grew up riding mules. I've learned one thing you have to do when training mules is LIKE them - and then be sure THEY BELIEVE you like them. You also have to be very CLEAR and let them know what you want.
Issue #1: Stepping off when I try to get on.
I'll fix the issue by asking the mule to work backward when he comes forward. I will repeat until he learns to stand still when I get my foot in the stirrup.
Issue #2: Getting a better handle.
I'll ask for softness with two reins, driving from behind, and releasing when he gives. Then I'll work on shoulder movement, hind end movement, and ribcage movement, just like I would with a horse.

Howdy Ken. A perfect example about Lazarus . I’m generally impatient when I ride my stock. But though the years I have gained more patience. When you referred to liking your mule, I have found that to oh so true. I bought my first riding mule last October, after having pack mules for some time. Oakley and I are pals. Thanks for the lesson.

You can get away with 'mistakes' training horses but not with mules, they watch everything & exploit any 'weakness'. LOL Not to mention, they're more intelligent than most people.
I always make friends with my mules & then they'll do anything for me, but first it's a game of 'wills'.

Question on saddles. Some people are adamant that only a purpose built mule saddle should be used. Others say ride what fits them. I'm inclined to go with ride what fits. What's your opinion?

you are correct..a mule is built much differently from a horse, hence mule saddles are built for mules. They fit.

Your heavy so he is balancing his body by moving, haha¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If you want to get him to learn what you want even faster, accompany your actions with the word Whoa or Ho. It just reinforces. Also people, Never name a horse or a dog with an "o" on the end of his name, like for instance, Moe or Coco, it may confuse him in relating to the word, No! ಠ︵ಠ

Or just use a different word than "no". I never use no for equines or dogs. Problem solved. Now you can name them whatever you want. 🙄 human language is just that...made up sounds that make up words that we use habitually. I think this trainer knows what he's doing when it comes to words, not to mention trainers are often training horses that are not their own so they may ask what the owners have been already using, may make suggestionsto change for each individual situation, and even more nuances more importantin training other people's equines...even more reason that what words he is using or not using in this video is a moot point.
