Even cell phones have pretty much stopped in any impressive additions for some years now. Technology similar to this will exist one day but not in the near future. If families still had a decent nesting tradition, they'd be able to pool paychecks and take the load off - but it's every man and woman for themselves, in NC. So you've got the unemployed poor - see the beggars around Heywood - the working poor (most of everyone else) and the ultra-rich. Even working in a place as prestigious as Konpeki Plaza pays a pittance - the ushers are required to undergo full body conversions and effectively have to pay a lease on their own flesh and blood, literally.
If you look at the description of the most expensive car in the game you'll see the lifetime earnings of the average citizen mentioned. (Roughly 4327 eddies over their lifetime) obviously this is just reported earnings but still it is shockingly low.

It's also in line with one of the main theme in american SF, the fall of America. Most other nations are to insecure to contemplate their own demise, which means real America is just all right, save some rough edges here and there.
The lore of Cyberpunk didn't paint America in rosy colors. Between 1991 and 2020, America faced a losing fight in Central America, suffered an economic crash worse than the 2008 Recession OTL, a shadow war fought between a cabal of the FBI, NSA, CIA, and DEA, and the rest of the government (resulting in the deaths of 2-3 POTUS), famine, martial law, another war in Central America, corporate backed assassination of the POTUS, secession, more wars, more instability, etc. The (N)USA is nothing more than a shambling dictatorship with a president the public sees as beholden to their corporate overlords and is spoiling to prove it is still a world power...

Cyberpunk 2013 is retconed by Cyberpunk 2020 (which is split into two alternate timelines, one with the IV corp war, second "Deep Space" without), then it is retconed by Cyberpunk Red wich, in turn is retconed by Cyberpunk 2077. And to make things easeier, every single handbook for Cyberpunk 2020 retcons something from a bunch of other handbooks. So this is CDPR's cyberpunk. Take it or leave it. Yes, it's plain ridiculous (if US hets hit by 1000% recession, while the world suffers far less (but still, the only country not affected by the collapse of 1994, according to CP2020 was Canada) it still be in the major 10 players. 8th place to be precise :), but it fits into cyberpunk trope of fucking up America. For reasons unknown, America can't cope with the world breaking crisis, but the countries with the history of falling apart because of tuesday, are thriving :)

Mike got carried away a bit, it was kind of retconed in later suplements, as US seemed to been able to singlehandedly stomp over Arasaka and Militech (which was again retconed in Cyberpunk Red, because Mike wanted some postapocalypse and, for some reason, he believes in all this "nomads are better" bullshit...) But CDPR had their own ideas and didn't let the lore stop them. Which is fine, it's just a game. Also, the media corp that the report comes from is an Arasaka mouthpiece, so they probably fine tune the data to their liking. I bet that similar report from Net54 would place NUSA at the first place at everything :) Cyberpunk lore is just a beautiful mess :)

It will be strange for you, as for many, but in this universe the Soviet Union (yes it still exists there) is better than the former USA, although they (like everyone else, but not as bad as in America) have problems . In this show, it was mentioned that there is still a shortage in the USSR, which is strange, given that there are many Soviet products in Night City (weapons, implants, trucks and ... vodka). Apparently old stereotypes die with difficulty. But best of all is in Western Europe and Japan, although the situation in Western Europe has deteriorated significantly since 2020. Well, there is also a colony in Antarctica. There is a very low number of murders, "only" 70 per 100 000 citizens. (El Salvador has the highest homicide rate in the world at 61.8 murders per 100,000 in 2020 real world).

@@axelpatrickb.pingol3228 Well, they "have it good" for a certain definition of "good". Most people in those countries as well are pretty much under the corporate thumb as much as Americans are, but they may be somewhat better off overall than the absolute shitshow that is Cyberpunk's America.
It will be strange for you, as for many, but in this universe the Soviet Union (yes it still exists there) is better than the former USA, although they (like everyone else, but not as bad as in America) have problems . In this show, it was mentioned that there is still a shortage in the USSR, which is strange, given that there are many Soviet products in Night City (weapons, implants, trucks and ... vodka). Apparently old stereotypes die with difficulty.
But best of all is in Western Europe and Japan, although the situation in Western Europe has deteriorated significantly since 2020. Well, there is also a colony in Antarctica.
