This is one hell of a car. I think it held the FASTEST track time on Top Gear for quite a while. One of the cars that will appreciate in value like crazy.
It hasn’t appreciated. You can still buy them for less than their original MSRP. I’m surprised they haven’t appreciated greatly though. It’s a timeless, stunningly beautiful design! The SLR is extremely underrated!
Jay has the absolute best car collection in history. The posters/memorabilia throughout his garages are probably worth hundreds of thousands, not to mention the cars. Unbelievable. I'm glad you post all these videos for us to enjoy. He's a real car guy. Thanks Jay!
He actually has a bunch of them and cycles through. It makes takes/retakes and editing continuity easier, since there's no wardrobe coordination to worry about.
A friend of mine worked for McLaren as a design engineer and was responsible for everything in front of the bulkhead on the SLR. The main issues were all related to the immense heat generated and it's efficient removal. The heat was even melting the cast aluminium fins on the air slats so they had to revert to milling the fins from blocks of aluminium. Apparently, it makes a difference.
I remember seeing this car years ago at the NY Auto Show. I don't think a single person thought this car was ugly, and it easily attracted the most attention that year. It may not quite hold its own against some of the newer cars today (Aventador, MP4-12C, etc.), but this car will always be one of the most beautiful ever made, period. A timeless design. Congrats on your success, Jay. I hope to have a collection even 1/10th as nice as yours someday.
In this video you mentioned that you worked at a dealership at one time. My dad was a salesmen and then a manager at one. I am a second generation car salesmen. I appreciate your passion for cars. Your garage is more than a hobby to you I thank. The videos you share explain all about the car and its heritage. I just want to say thank you for sharing your passion for the Automobile. You set the high standard of a real guy. Thanks Mr Leno.
I agree. I think it goes without saying, but every time I watch one of these clips I think "man this guy is a really, really good host and I like hearing him talk about stuff"
It's astonishing how much detail, beauty, and power this car contains. It can only be further perfected with a proper gated gear box, but it is just immensely good the way it is.
I like this man's silly sense of humour. And his Mercedes Benz stash is legendary. And i cant believe he met Moss and even Fangio, just the honour of meeting people from that time in motorsports.
Thank you Jay, I am an avid viewer of your work, I am a Seventy -one 100% Service Connected Veteran, who has taken your advice, just bought a SLK 250 R172 with AMG accessories, My dream car for a Vietnam Vet who dreamed one day this poor kid would own a Mercedes, Dreams do come true.
Jay leno"s Garage is the best show on TH-cam No other show comes close to the amount of content that he puts out with each one of his episodes. Its not just about the cars, its also about the amazing people that are behind the making of these works of art and amazing machinery, and the history of it all, and he grasps each and everyone of those points every time. Great Series Jay, keep up the Great work. I just wanted to let you know all of us enjoy your work and this hobby, thanks for sharing!
Every time Jay Leno mentions the 300sel 6.3 I cry a little because I sold mine. I couldn't afford to restore it so I sold it so someone can do it justice, Couldn't see a car like that end up in a junk yard. What I would do to own another one.
Jay seems tired in this video. Hardly the type of mood with such a car beside you . Maybe he had a long day. But , which is exactly why I appreciate him doing these videos . Thumbs up .
I'm a huge Mercedes Benz fan. I work on a dozen or so every year in my body shop. Love the way they are built. You really have to take them apart to fully appreciate the build quality, and intelligent design of the cars.
+Ed Jackson so true, compared to all cars we have owned, these are among the few with nu panel gaps and where eveything is perfectly executed. French cars we own are a lot more comfortable, but they fall apart after 10 years, ze Germans keep on going no matter what :)
"I got to know my hero Sir Stirling Moss pretty well. In fact he took me around the racetrack for a spin.. I also got to know Fangio pretty well, and he gave me his first World Championship winning trophy.." Yeah, just casually dropping names, like your friends with two of the greatest racing drivers in the world, just in passing commentary.. lol. Jay really is the man.
When I first saw this channel I thought it would be like MTV cribs, just a rich guy showing off his cars, but I have to admit the way Jay talks about cars and the people who design them and race them you really get taken in by his love for the automobile and what it sands for. i was lucky enough to meet Sir Moss once only briefly and I can say he is a true star...keep up the good work Jay.
I remember seeing this in NFS Most Wanted years ago and always being amazed by how it looked. Just so elegant and sounded like a damn beast. This, the Carrera GT, and the M3 GTR from that game always caught me in this magical way. Always been a dream car of mine. Knowing more now that I'm older, especiialy about names like McLaren, REALLY love this car now.
Watching this you can really appreciate how much better his video's have gotten, now they have lots of camera angles and don't miss a word, Jay is always good.
Damn Jay! What a collection! You are the ultimate car guy and living the life! Thank you for creating this TH-cam channel and sharing all your bitchen stuff with us.
One of the coolest and awesome cars ever made. I remember being 10-11 years old watching the review of this car when it was new on TH-cam top gear and thinking it was the coolest thing ever lol that was when TH-cam was a new phenomenon which is hard to believe now.
Von Sterner not even close. Some of the middle eastern guys have 100’s of car that are worth millions a piece but jay does have a nice collection no arguing that and he’s a super nice down to earth guy.
Best exhaust note ever! I always roll down my window to listen to an AMG when I spot one. Driven like an alpha male...nice! Looks like great fun. I'll meet you with my Vette on the 405 at dawn
He collects cars that hold sentimental value as well. Could just be a car he loves... apparently his favourite car of all time is the Miata MX-5. If I was as rich as him I'd have a Saab 900 in every colour... why? I just love em.
I remember seeing this car in a car and driver article when I was like 9 and just gawking at this beauty. 10 years later and it's still as sleek and beautiful as I remember.

Jay is the best when it comes to describing automobiles. I really like the styling and the speed of that the SLR McLaren. Now all I need to do is win a lottery, lots of money buys lots of toys. Just ask Jay.

John Braugh well i know there's a special Mercedes Benz around that time that had a Porshe engine. I know it sounds weird but it happened. The wheels looked just like the ones on there and the body style seemed to be the same as i remember.
I'll take one ! Yes, back in the 70's my friends and I would have Sterling Moss stories and pictures from magazines to share. I remember one pic of him on the track. His car was 2 feet off the ground in the middle of a right hand turn staring right into the sun and with the wheels turned hard left. hahaaa. He is unique. My friends were driving to Watkins Glen up in New York to watch a race there, and while they could drive fairly well for streeters, they mentioned that a small VW something or other passed them on a curve going at least 3 times faster than they were and concluded it had to be Mr Moss heading to the race.
The SLR is nice. HOWEVER, the W210 silver E55 in the background is my favorite car. It's a perfect 'real world' automobile. I love mine. Jay please do a video of this great hand built sedan.
Cars are meant to be driven. Nice to see you actually drive your cars instead of leaving them to collect dust. You're da man!
At least he has a choice of cars. If my car breaks down I'm screwed.
Jay Leno: the Carfather

The way he talked about the lift kit for Carrera GT :D
MockALove just one scrapped less deference
Like when you drive it normally and you go over a speed bump, it goes RRRRRRRRRRRRR. And with the lift kit, it just goes RRRRRRRRRRR

That denim shirt has more mileage than all of Jay's cars combined. (smile)

Every video I can't wait to here you say those 5 words
"Let's go for a ride."
