The SLR was the car that got me into cars back when I was 12. So it'll always have a place in my heart. You forget it's nearly 20 years old now yet it can still hold it's own. Quite a testament to both how good it was and how far cars have come in that space of time. But even when new, that gearbox was always its Achilles heel. I wonder if you can take one back to McLaren and ask them to correct all its flaws.
Actually the g55 amg is the closest thing to the slr regarding the engine. The share the same engine and exhaust, but the engine is detuned in the g55 amg.
Fun fact: The SLR is now 17 years old, and still holds its own against two new cars with more torque, power, less weight and being RWD. That is impressive. The SLR, enzo and carrera GT were the greatest supercars made since the 2000s with no discussion

Every mercedes owner of the supercharged motor knows that the SLR had a bad intercooler pump... That’s why the supercharger was disengaging. Would have been nice to see what would happen if it was running properly. Great race!

That SLR is an amazingly well built car. At track events overheating kicks in on many “big name” supercars. SLRs run the track all day without a problem and can do back to back 200MPH runs without breaking a sweat.
It's almost shocking that an unloved 2+2 Ferrari, even its production had been ceased last year due to the undesirability, is faster than the legendary SLR. The progress of automotive technology in the last decade is just incredible.

Yes dude, the SLR is insane. I can see now why it was $400,000 back in 2003. There’s pretty much nothing that would stand up to it then. By the way, that limiter really killed it. I’ve heard of these things doing 210mph+
They’re not the cream of the crop super cars though, they’re half a second off the time of a bmw m8, which is literally a grand tourer. A cream of the crop would be things like the Ferrari F8, Lamborghini aventador SVJ, mclaren 720/765... and they would absolutely obliterate the SLR McLaren

17 years old with an awful automatic and no launch control. Fell in love with it the moment I saw it on Top Gear back in 2003, and the 722 made me fall deeper in love.

Matt, I think that the conventional 3rd run (i.e. most aggressive driving mode and specific gear) shouldn't be in a arbitrary gear. That run is about the very best that each car can do in a rolling start. That's would mean to me the gear with the best at-the-wheels torque, and that obviously could be different for each car.
That Mercedes SLR McLaren just is stunning, even to this day~~ It is an old car, but it was still impressive nonetheless~ Love the guy in the Ferrari, his energy was awesome, and I'm sure he's been in most of the other drag races too :)
The only thing that let's is down is the 5 speed auto! But it's just what it was back when it was new. And Mercedes was developing the 6.2 AMG V8 to replace the 5.4 one, which got a 7 speed gearbox.

It was one of the fastest in its class back when it “competed” against the Carrera GT. watch the Top Gear vid about them both its so cool to see! Apart from the gearboxes they are still fast cars
Jay Leno once mentioned that the SLR is one of the few supercars that can be floored back to back and will always reach it's top speed without any issues.

B4 watching the clip, the SLR will still be struggling for traction as the others cross the line. I've actually driven one. The tech back then couldn't handle that power. It was completely unmanageable.

The SLR is an absolute beauty and one of the best early 2000's supercars.
The SLR hanging out with cars over 10 years younger is an amazing testament to how great it was. Probably the highest quality Grand Tourer ever built.

The DBS is an incredible machine. Bear in mind that what it's up against its still blisteringly fast.

B4 watching the clip, the SLR will still be struggling for traction as the others cross the line. I've actually driven one. The tech back then couldn't handle that power. It was completely unmanageable.

But the SLS especially as Black Series was a marvelous car. Absolutely timeless looks as well.
