As a hobby photographer, I mostly disagree with your opinion on the pictures. Samsung seems to follow a certain look on their pictures with oversaturated colors, high HDR, higher contrast and a lot of added sharpness. Only because it's popular doesn't mean that the images are technically superior. I don't want to start a debate, whether smartphone cameras should follow a strongly stylized look, but I feel like in your evaluation of the images, the line between hardware capabilities and personal preference in terms of look are a bit blurry.
I would like to mention a few examples where I disagree with your opinion:
0:05 If you take a look on the right part of the Samsung image, you can see that the jeans material has an unrealistic amount of sharpness while an effect is applied, that is generally known as dehaze. Also, the colors are much warmer than they are supposed to be, if you compare the image with the reference video. On Sony on the other hand, HDR is worse but colors are more accurate and the hue of the background comes much closer to the reference video. It generally looks like the video could use a touch of color grading in post to reach the stylized look of the reference clip.
1:00 You say that the Samsung is generally much sharper and for the Sony it looks like a softening filter is applied. I think it's rather the opposite. While the Sony has the general lack of sharpness that most smartphone cameras come with, Samsung hides it by applying a lot of digital sharpening. So much, that the image is on the brink of falling apart. To much sharpness is generally most noticable on smaller details, such as the trees in the background behind the building. Again, the colors are oversaturated, especially the red. If you like the look, good for you, but applying digital sharpness doesn't mean one brand has natively sharper optics. Furthermore, I wouldn't agree that the Sony's colors are unrealistic. If you compare the colors of the leaves at 1:20, Samsung seems to have an unrealistically bright shade of green, while Sony portraits also some yellow in the leaves. Also with Samsung, you can see the higher contrast on the lamppost, which makes the graffitti unrecognizable and also on the lady's clothing. In this scene, it is also interesting to compare the sharpness on the ground. To me it looks like Sony takes the lead regarding sharpness in this specific still.
1:38 In this still, Samsung is obviously oversaturated an also oversharpened on the shirt. The rest is just personal preference about contrast and white balance.
3:48 I agree, that Samung has a higher dynamic range, but I just want to mention, that, while it ist technically better, the high HDR look isn't always appreciated. Images can start to look unnatural and clinical, if HDR is to high. On some occasions you might start to loose the feeling for the lighting situation, if absolutely nothing is overexposed, i.e. you loose the highlights between the tree branches, that look great in the bokeh. And on these two pictures, I actually appreciate that Sony keeps the flare on the lower right hand corner, as it was in fact a sunny day. In my opinion, Sony also has a more realistic digital bokeh. On Samsung it's an unrealistic kind of softening, as there is no texture left. Most real cameras will probably produce a result that comes closer to Sony's version of the bokeh.
3:53 IMO Sony is not to bright nor to flat. I think it's just realistic, if you want to capture the light of a sunny day, but maybe that's just personal preference. On Samsung, I think it's again oversaturated and the artefacts around the collar of the shirt are more noticeable compared to Sony, i.e. on the right side of the neck.
4:01 I agree, but I'd like to mention that Samsung again applies an unrealistic amount of sharpening to the side of the head. Also, the flaws of the seperation of the background around the hair are much more noticeable on Samsung.
5:20 I think this is the prime example of the oversharpened and high HDR look Samsung is going for. The shade of blue of the sky might be personal preferenc, but I think we can all agree that the sharpness of the trees besides the street is (again) unrealistic on Samsung.
6:13 While the Samsung obviously has a lower minimum focal distance, I think the image quality is just poor compared to the sony. Samsung has a very shallow plane of focus at this distance, which makes the borders of the coin appear unsharp. The contrast is quite poor and in the upper part of the image you can see noise in the shadows at the ceiling. While Sony has a worse reproduction ratio for macro photography, it manages contrast, colors and sharpness much better and i find the seperation of the background much more satisfying.
6:37 On this picture I'm quite disappointed with your evaluation. Sony manages to reproduce the actual color of the flower, which is pink, much better than samsung and even displays the gradient between white and pink and the the leaf veins in the upper part of the flower very accurately. The seperation of the background looks natural and has no artefacts. Samsung, on the other hand, decides flower=red and looses almost all the details I mentioned above and adds way to much sharpness. Just look at the separation of the background on the lower part of the flower. You can really see the border of the added sharpness. I really wish you would consider these factors and not just the dynamic range when comparing these two pictures.
6:55 Again, to much sharpness on the trees an the image is way to bright for nighttime.
7:05 Sony captures the lighting situation way better, while Samsung is making night look like daylight. It's perhaps a personal preference, but Sony delievers the more realistic picture.
This isn't supposed to be a hate on Samsung. If you like the looks of their camera software then go for it. I just wanted add my opinion about the technical differences between the images, I feel like you didn't mention. If it seems like I'm biased, because I only praise Sony, please remember that I only commented on the pictures/videos on which I disagree with your opinion. I have to admit that in terms of video stabilization, zoom, resolution and HDR Samsung is mostly superior. It's just that I not a big fan of their image processing.
Some people mentioned, that Sony's time to shine is mostly in manual mode. And while I agree with that, it's not the point of my comment. I just wanted to reflect on the evaluation of the images shown in this video.

S21: Best on point and shoot -> take less time and skill to produce good image

In manual mode, it can match the Samsung & iPhone in auto mode. It's pretty sad. To match the sony quality, it's very easy for both. In video, the iPhone is so far ahead, it's not funny. Maybe 5 years ahead of Sony and 1-2 ahead of Samsung.

  • @DenisLiasis
    @DenisLiasis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

Sony has its own view on what a final result should be. And I agree with them.
The photos that this phone took are like taken from a real camera. Blown on highlights and deep shadows are what our eyes see. In your night video for example Xperia is much better. The night looks like it is night, when Samsung looks like it's day with washed out colours.
If you switch to manual mode with it's pro apps on Xperia you can get the same result as the Samsung.
You TH-camrs are quick to take some photos in auto mode and say "yeah, Samsung is better"
No it's not. Your use is actually the problem here. The new Xperia phones are not intended for auto mode use, but even in auto I found the results very pleasing. Samsung's results are artificial

The whole point of Sony Xperia is to use their camera with manual apps - photo pro and cinéma pro. The basic photo/video app on Xperia is just there for quick shots. So comparing Xperia with s21 without using the pro apps isn't fair at all.
And if you include third party apps like mcpro24fps in the equation, this will be a total different conclusion. Sony Xperia HLG 10 bit HDR with manual control in mcpro24fps at 160Mbps is just insane...

At 1.40, looks like you did not use Cinema Pro for video, and also, seems to have HDR on, which on the default camera app, will give it a hazy hue. Remove HDR if you are using the default app for video and see the haze removed. As for photo, only the Xperia among the phone cameras can capture fast moving objects like running pets at 20 fps and not end up a blurry mess.

My Xperia XZ Premium does 960 FPS at 720p also. It is almost like taking a photo and it plays back at normal speed. Later Xperia XZs also do it at 1080. By now they are cheap enough on eBay as long as you don't want the latest model. Also note that the cameras are different, the Samsung is using a 108 MP camera. Sony does make image sensors found in many phones. I have seen a phone with a 48 MP Sony image sensor (not quad pixel which results in a smaller but sharper 12 MP photo). Does Sony make a phone with more than a 23 MP camera? They easily could since they make their own image sensors and even sell them to other manufacturers.

The last photo of the flower the flower was over saturated and as far as I could tell stabilization was pretty equal. In other reviews the Sony always won for this feature. I just got the Sony and am very pleased with it though this camera review is pretty spot on. Xperia screen needs to be brighter. And the screen does have issues with going back and forth from horizontal and vertical it's odd it only happens sometimes other times it's flawless. That was how my iphone 7 was though. You also need to keep in mind the magic of the Xperias camera is in pro mode where you set shots up but can also save settings for specific environments allowing point and shoot within that environment (or with only slight adjustment). Xperia doesn't have a dedicated night mode so there's no way it's competing with the Samsung. The draw backs on the Sony are all software maybe they will fix them. But Sony specifically made the phone this way and I doubt it. Sony is a stubborn company apparently. Refused to do any real promotion of this phone. There's no reason to have these drawbacks. Make the basic mode just like everyones point and shoot and then keep pro mode how you designed it. Oh if you want 5G on the Xperia in the us you will need Verizon or T-Mobile. I have At&t and I only get LET and it drops in certain areas which is weird because LET on my iphone never dropped. This is part of the reason Sony needs to stop not appealing to everyone. Ok you made a profit in 2017 for the first time in like a decade off your phones maybe you should just put a night mode in it and fix the software bugs. You're not beating Samsung in zoom and that's ok but macro can be fixed digitally with software. I bought your phone to support you now support me

Did you also notice the same? They have also broken 1 handed mode on Android 12. Sony is indeed a stubborn company. I have sent them videos of glitches and problems with the PC software and they have ignored it so far only to offer a repair of the handset (really?).

Second thing is, this comparison is strictly based on auto mode. Sony also offers Photo Pro app and Cinema Pro app that allows users to take full control of the camera and produce a higher quality video/photo which are 2 great features for professional photographers/cinematographers.
based on your comparison I do see where Samsung is leading on the Sony but I also think more examples are needed from both phones in more light conditions to determine which is better because 1 photo of each condition is just isn't that convincing, let alone the fact that on the contrary, on a lot of photos Samsung is the one looking over-sharpened and over-saturated if anything the Sony was under-saturated. I do love Samsung videos/photos but with effort the Sony can look as good and even better, and with its more natural colors and sharpness, it gives it in my opinion an advantage over the Samsung since it looks less phone camera quality and more DSLR level of quality, even being less saturated or sharp. I do agree on alot of photos Sony looked like it was a 2 year old phone.
Again, great video I love the comparison, I'm not intending to hate or that I'm a Sony fan or a Samsung hater but a deeper dive into details would have been more satisfying.

It could be said that the Samsung is too sharp on some of those video tests. Sony looks more natural when though it is flat.
Sony could do with some HDR auto I think. It's available in pro photo mode at least.

I agree with all of the other (you know which) comment states but let me give you my simplified take on this (I'm also into DSLR camera Photography) , basically this comparison is for point and shoot cameras, which camera will give you the most acceptable results most of the time, because, let's be fair, most people only wants that, to take a snap and have the snap be good, that's it, in that aspect I do agree that Samsung produces better results. But the Sony Xperia phones are not targeted or marketed towards the general public, their target market is the people who know about photography and videography, the software in the xperia is mostly the same to real DSLR Sony Alpha cameras, so with the right tweaks and in the right hands it produces beautiful pictures that the Samsung will not be able to compete with. It's just that, it's not point and click. In other words, it is as if you were comparing A good point and shoot camera with a Mirrorless Camera, the first one is meant for the average consumer, and the second one will be fit for pro photographers, I mean you handle a DSLR camera yourself, you can agree that if you just use auto or the wrong settings your photos come out terrible... Anyway, Xperia phones are more like an accessory or companion for people that are already into photography it was not meant for the general public, you can see a video of a concert I took with the Xperia 1 iii, on manual mode, 4k, 2.4 aperture and 300mm which is around 5x, and compare it with the one in the low light video here, you tell me if the video I took with the right settings looks like the one taken on this video with auto: th-cam.com/video/r7zUwhjPYvk/w-d-xo.html

Its just crazy that NONE EVER on the whole youtube or any other website ever pointed this out that it is impossible to shoot 4k video on a 4:3 aspect 10mp sensor. Samsung has been doing this for years now. The front cam on the s10/note 10 series could shoot 4k30p on front 10mp camera. Mind Blown...🤯

The reason why many people want Samsung is because no one wants to put in the work. Sony gives you a raw/natural image and then up to you what you want to do. Samsung on the other hand is for vloggers, social media users who care more about the light of an image and want to just put on effects and off they post. It's a different market. I am a person whose photography focuses on natural so I'll choose a camera that shows exactly the scene

Sony is much more accurate in the shots taken, especially when professionally set it in the App. Alot of people will say most brands look better then Sony in auto mode, wich is entirely true but its only because they are more "vivid" and inaccurate compared to Sony. And thats what our eyes like. Vivid and punchy pictures. But thats not always the case for anyone. If you start taking professional pictures, you dont want to go back to a vibrant anf unnatural picture.
Sony uses Alpha camera processing in their phones, so it gives you an unparalleld natural image, as close to what you really see. Its the same with their TV's. Those are the closest to the D65 whitepoint reference as it can be out of any brand.

2 things are truly hate in camera comparisons vs the Galaxy S21 Ultra. 1, in slow-mo category, the Galaxy has regular slow motion and "Super Slow-Mo" which was used in this vid. You HAVE to mention the regular slow motion because everybody doesn't want Super Slow-Mo. And 2, many TH-camrs complain the Galaxy has too much blur but always fail to mention that you can literally adjust the blur to your liking.
    So annoying.

  • @darkblaze9108

Well the camera of samsung is using fluorescent light that can handle the balance of color and brightness of the camera that the image looks sharp and colorful on auto mode.
And I see the camera of the sony is over exposed didn't adjust correctly the EV while taking a photo, so that need to adjust it for the better image.
So samsung is good for the person who dont need use pro camera just takes a selfie or photo that they like and post it. And the sony is good for profesional or a person who take photo seriously for the better quality image.

damn the Sony just looks so much better in the first video comparison, that 'softness' is what sets it apart, makes it look like it was shot on a DSLR or mirrorless. High end computation is impressive but will always be inferior to properly captured image data imho.
Sony needs to step up their computation game and everyone else needs to step up their raw imaging game.
The rest of this comparison is kind of pointless... because your comparing computational to non-computational imaging with no PP. You mention a few times that the Sony is over-saturating colours when it's clearly the other way around, not sure if that was just a mix-up on your end or if you're high as a fucking kite. As well as calling Samsung's night mode 'brighter' and Sony's 'darker' when the statement you were looking for was 'over-compensated artificial dynamic range, which makes it look terrible' and 'zero dynamic range compensation, which makes it look terrible' respectively. You should have used manual mode on both phones for.. well everything but the nighttime stuff especially, both are capable of much better.
