In the history of music bands, a lot of times the extremely successful ones are born from the coincidence of various talented persons meeting each other, and that is specially true with Queen. Queen was a one in one million miracle of four musical geniuses meeting each other and deciding to form a band, and that's what made it so incredible and so timeless. It's never "70's music", "80's music" when you listen to Queen. It's always "Queen music". It really is a kind of magic.
Such a beautiful song with a stunning video. I always love seeing Roger do the drumstick twist in his fingers. Freddie was so command full with his presence yet each band member showed their great skills. The song was also very haunting in Highlander. Always a Queen fan favourite. I love her musical analysis, and have learnt to hear more from songs that I have missed over the years, so would love to see her break down of such a great song!
@@WayneKitching Well it has a very special meaning after we all learned that Freddie already knew he was sick and that probably also knew he didn't have much time left when he wrote the song
Yay! Amy’s magic ears are going to make me hear new sounds from favorite Queen songs. I agree the bass makes this song! I hope you hear John Deacon’s love ballad One Year Of Love which shows that those kind of songs made Freddie’s voice sound almost otherworldly in its beauty. Each member wrote gorgeous music for the movie Highlander. Also Freddie’s song Princes of the Universe is a smorgasbord of music. A panoply of sound! Brian’s song Who Wants To Live Forever is beautiful and live Freddie seems to be pulling energy out into the audience. It’s incredible. These guys were amazing when together.
I think the bass line for this song was Freddie's invention. He took it from his older song Keep Passing The Open Windows. The original Kind Of Magic song as written by Roger Taylor can be heard at the end of the movie, and here on YT among other places. It's called Highlander Version. Not everyone knows that both song (One Vision & A Kind of Magic) come from the demo by Roger called Kind Of Vision. Later on it was divided into two different songs.
Deacon had such swag that was very unusual for a rock/pop rock group. His liking of R&B and Funk stuff definitely reflects in a lot of Queen's material
One thing Queen was good at was whimsy, cheekiness and fun. Their music was just really fun back then and now. Every time I hear the songs from "Highlander" (The films and the television series) I'm transported instantly to that moment in time. It's still *magic*. 🥰
It would be great if you could interview Brian May or Roger Taylor once you've finished your Queen 50 series - I'm sure they would respond with interest to your different perspective on their music.
That and Who wants to live forever. BOTH those are more iconic Highlander soundtrack songs. We open with Princes, and we cried with Who wants to live forever.... we close out with "its a kind of Magic" except not this version.
This is in absolute my favorite Queen song.. I really love the atmosphere inside this very easy listening composition and this atmosphere, that basically is the point of this song, is so beauty, complete and complex to create in a so deep and strong mode that only real magicians arists has been occurred to create it. I have to say, this album is wonderful when the audience understand why, how was born and expecially the point. As artistic work may be considered their lowest work togheter with the Hot Space album, (another one of my favorites) but if we consider that this is basically not exactly a Queen album but just a Music for a movie, i think they reached the point and the real goal, witch was to create an eternal-magical atmosphere. I really like the voice of Freddie in this song, where he seems to be very powerful in comparison with his losing of his hightest notes (as you can see in their lives in 1984, '85 and '86). I really like how he use the 'vibrato' in a more technical manner really macking feels to the audience, something like a magic in the air. Bass and drums, in their semplicity are very well connected and voice and guitar too, expecially when Brian start to use the tapping technic and Freddie use his lower part of his throat where is normally produced the clearest and 'lyrical' voice. It's seems like the instrument, in a very easy way, have had a little cheat chat each other. It's easy to ear how the musicality of the entire album is quite different by One Vision, witch was a song not related with the album.
what you mean essentialy is Queen were the best band of all time, they were all phenomenal musicians and i agree with you :) kinda saddens me some people saying "oh queen was Freddie Mercury, if it wasn't for him they would be a regular band". Well we all know Freddie (albeit staying in the band) tried several solo albums, or albums outside of Queen and they were failures :WW
Context of music and the year and era it was conceived in are part of any band's musical progression and maturity. Queen's music in the 70's is very different from the 80's but the essence and the magic remains. That's what i guess kept us fans so attached to this band - besides the addiction to Freddie's voice. I don't think they would be able to compete had they been stuck with the 70's style of music in the 80's. They embraced new tech and created more magic. Every time i listen to a song i discover a piece or line or voice that i haven't paid attention to before... that's part of the allure of this band.
So many groups broke up over songwriting squabbles. Queen learned to compromise and trust each other to do what was best for the song. It can never be overstated how great a musician Freddie was. He had an ear for melody like no other. You can hear it in his piano playing and singing. Love this song live at Wembley. Will be great if you reacted to Friends Will be Friends. Freddie and John wrote it with lyrics by Freddie. It's one of my favourite Freddie lyrics and a song they put in the encore between We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions live. Thanks, Amy for another great reaction!
"A sense of eternity... with little drops of something..." Your descriptions of my beloved Queen make me weep with joy. I also love it when there are no words to describe what is happening, and you revert to a form of musically annotative sign language with your fingers, hands, and sweeps of motion. You get it.
Thank you for the 'magic dust' Team Amy✨. This track is a 'masterclass' in mixing and arrangement. Such a fun song but deep enough to show, in actuality, the real, experienced magic of music - Just imagine if you could time travel to meet Mozart and you played him this song (Bruckner might just run for the hills!) Anyway, the looks on their faces would be priceless.😃
There's a version of this that's my favourite Queen song - it's the one at Wembley Stadium in 1986 (the Saturday performance). For me, that is rock music perfection. I'm less fond of the album version overall, but that guitar sound is amazing.
What makes a great rock guitarist, in my opinion, is not just what they play but what they don't play. Brian May, like David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, knows when to exercise restraint and not overload the music with his playing. Sometimes their notes have a greater impact when they're sparser and 'It's A Kind Of Magic' is a perfect example of that (although the outro is more intricate).
Hi 👋 Mrs Amy, Once again we’re in front of pure genius. Imagine a musical salad with a lot of ingredients but nothing is to much and everything is in its place exalting itself and the other ones. As I told you I bought two copies of this LP, one to listen to and one to keep as a relic: I’m not an expert but at the time (1986) I analyzed every single note of this song and I captured the perfect shading of their “tails “. Not a hundredth of a second out of time or place. Those shadings reminds me of the perfect “spike” the fancy ice-cream worker makes on your cone. Fantastic. And it could not work without Freddie’s voice, absolutely: here it is so silky smooth, velvety and firmly powerful at the same time. What a perfect song.
Freddy just love May's solos and I think the part Freddy laughs "It's magic!" reflects that veneration as "Its magic" from May's solo play as a pun sentence.
What I love about this song is the alternating bass rhythms... it goes from a stacatto "walk" to a rambling "run" with little notice... then back to the stacatto walk again in an almost seamless way. It's genius.
Oh my, my favourite Queen song since I small and heard it in 86 And.... You're not wrong about the connection between A kind of magic and One Vision. Out of the demo, A kind of Vision, we got the two song's
Lets not forget the Miracle Album. I am interested whats going to be off of that one? I'd say I want it all and it SHOULD have Was it all worth it (Freddies Goodbye, except he lived longer)
I've heard this song many times. Knowing what was "next," I looked forward to your reaction and thoughts. I was dancing right along with you. When you stopped the music while I was dancing around, it felt like the way you feel when you hold your breath and then take your first breath after 20 seconds. Bup bup biddy biddy bup bup
The highlander soundtrack is fantastic. It's well worth a listen. When you think that freddie may have known his health was definitely in a bad way when he was working on the music,(even though he apparently was diagnosed a year after the movie was released), it kind of gives it a new meaning. The emotions and the feeling of mortality is absolutely there.
I must admit, this one did get me crying in Highlander movie. 😢 Fascinating that you are getting so much feeling from the music, without having even watched the movie. It is much to Queen's credit that they have portrayed such so well.
I love this song and this album, one of my favorites of Queen, probably also because it came out during my teenage years and it is connected to beautiful experiences.
Quote related to ' A Kind Of Magic ' We fight a lot and hard, we all are pigheaded, no one does give in, most of all Roger and Freddie roar at each other over and over again. The new single brought a lot of fights, so we released Roger's song in Europe and in the States Freddie's song Princes of the Universe. We will see who wins. John Deacon; Popcorn, 1986 #
This is completely different live as with all of their music. There are four people who have degrees, Sir Brian built his own guitar back in the early 60's from items within his family home, John degree in electronics which is also how they can do a number of different sounds and made the Amps which he and Sir Brian used and Sir Brian still uses. The video for this is a good concept, which is where some of Freddie graphic design degree will come in
The connection is the entire album was writen for The Highlander movie, hollywood ask Freddie to do the theme song, but freddie absolutely loved the script so much he told them he would only do it if he could do the whole soundtrack, like he did for Flash Gordon.
One vision Collab and credited to all of them Freddie wanted to write a song together But Roger turned up with a complete song! Freddie basically pulled it apart kept the idea of it and they put it back together!
It's thematic as it and others were part of the soundtrack to the movie "Highlander" from 1987. Queen performed the entire soundtrack and specific lyrics ties into the story told/presented by the movie. I would highly recommend watching the director's cut
Amy absolutely has to watch the Making of One Vision, the extended version, to see Queen’s collaborative creative process. Of course, Freddie is Freddie. So funny watching him tell Roger how he should play the drums. Of course, the whole segment on getting the lyrics right is great.
All of this music on the record are the Movie soundtrack to the original film " Highlander" with Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert. The film is about a 15th Century Highlander who discovers that he is part of an immortal race, that can not die. if you see the film it takes him on a journey from the Scottish Highlands to modern New York city, The music would make more sense when knowing this .
One of my favourite tracks is the live version from Mannheim 1986 (available on TH-cam). Check it out - you can feel their enjoyment in the performance.
The one thing I don't like about this song is that it doesn't go on long enough. The solo, 'proper', toward the end could have quite easily have gone into another chorus, or even another verse then chorus to end the song of. But, as it is, it simply fades out. It's that swapping of channels with that solo which always feels a little bit extra special, within Queen songs. A technique they've used many times in the past, that's kind of a trademark of theirs. Having said all of that, the earlier part of the song tends to leave you in suspense of what's to come, and forms an integral part of the overall aesthetic of the tune. The playful use of sweeping sounds, back and forth, adds to the effect of magic occurring. Freddie plays it up to the max, (as per usual.) Brian adds in the frills; Roger keeps it all going with the tempo required and John meticulously drives the beat, with the odd flourish, here and there.
Highlander was my inroad to Queen's music. It might not be your cup of tea, Amy, but I think it would be very interesting to see what you think of it after your reactions to the music Queen created for it. If you do watch it, certainly keep your thoughts on the music in mind.
It's interesting you touched on their collaborative nature - even though individuals wrote the songs, the band would work on shaping the compositions together. This is probably what led to them finally crediting all of their songs to the band as a whole, starting with the next album "The Miracle".
I dont think that was the case generally Freddie didnt interfere with Rogers song for the film When he went on holiday Freddie felt it could be a hit so worked on it and Roger liked it They didnt work on it together Even if the songs they wrote were different they are very different composers as well as writters You can see the difference between them Brian did solos but it was agreed early on if he wanted to do that it would be uncredited Ìf they collectivly composed or wrote a song it would be credited to the band
Yes, Highlander Movie, ooh ooh Flash Gordon!! Queen soundtrack double feature movie reaction plus classical musician's orchestral analysis of Crash Dive on Mingo City or that scene where Freddie Mercury sings New York, New York! Uuugghhh, it would be so awesome!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I became a much better performer, singer and guitar player, just by watching your videos. I really improved my communication with the audience and they are really noticing it, paying more attention to what me and my band is doing. I could never thank you enough for this.
@@basstian I can definitely hear Freddie there, too. However, I think the base layer is Roger. Otherwise, Fred's voice wouldn't stand out. Anyways, I wasn't there while they were tracking the vocals, so I can only guess..)
@@tigranayvazyan5974 It's not a matter of guessing but a matter of being aware of how their voices sounded. Roger sang some bits on that track, but not the one you cited.
A very special song to me. It is one of only two that mention the inner sound, heard in Sant Mat meditation. The bell sound being the lowest as we move up through the inner plains. Amazing Grace is the only other song that speaks of this. It is the unstruck melody, the Naam, the Shabd and the Word of God. If you know a teacher who can reveal it to you, you are on your way home.
Personally, I LOVE the original movie version of the song and find it far more musically interesting than what ended up on the album. It's more of a rock song, a bit darker, and the instruments do more interesting things.
By the time of this album the days of multiple guitar and voices and harmonies and huge productions are long gone. I can tell, and you admit, it isn't as interesting or engaging as that all was but bands have to change with the times or die in the past. I bought my first Queen album when I was 10 years old (I'm 48 now) and in my consiousness there is the 'old' Queen sound and the 'new' Queen sound. Old is better, any big fan of any band will tell you the older stuff is the best (other than the Beatles who just got better and better and better with time) so its ok to say you aren't into the direction they are heading, as long as you are honest and don't say you like something when you dont. There is a song called Innuendo 3 years after this that will knock your socks off!
That's right. The original/initial demo was called A Kind Of Vision. Then they divided it into 2 different songs. And they did 2 different versions of A Kind of Magic - this one is by Freddie and it was released as a single and is on the album (Freddie even took the bassline from his older song, Keep Passing The Open Windows), and then there's Roger's version which can be heard at the end of the Hinglander movie and is called Higlander Version.
I am sure that many who were brought up with Queen and their first albums will notice the change that occurred after the release of the 8th album "The Game" They changed from a genuinely original sound with exquisite compositions to an everyday "pop" sound. Maybe they thought the "old ways" were old hat and they had to reinvent themselves to remain popular. Maybe the creative juices had run their course. People still bought and enjoyed their music but the magic for me had gone with only the occasional glimpses of their talent on show.

The film is about a 15th Century Highlander who discovers that he is part of an immortal race, that can not die. if you see the film it takes him on a journey from the Scottish Highlands to modern New York city, The music would make more sense when knowing this .
You did magic today Amy!
"THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!!!" You'll understand when you watch the movie.....
One of my favourite tracks is the live version from Mannheim 1986 (available on TH-cam). Check it out - you can feel their enjoyment in the performance.
That bass pattern is a disco beat which was rage in the 70's
Wonderful reaction
Here is an old one by a great singer --- Kate Smith - God Bless America
The last guitar part is similar to Bohemian Rhapsody with the call and answer flourishes.
You could call it impressions. I could call it GOLD. They had the Midas touch
4:13 BINGO!!! It's SO FREDDIE!!!!!
Highlander was my inroad to Queen's music. It might not be your cup of tea, Amy, but I think it would be very interesting to see what you think of it after your reactions to the music Queen created for it. If you do watch it, certainly keep your thoughts on the music in mind.
Of course the film Highlander was about immortals so your sense of the universe and time is spot on.
One year of love Vlad thanks
Pls, listen the song called White Queen (As it began), live version is especially beautiful
It's interesting you touched on their collaborative nature - even though individuals wrote the songs, the band would work on shaping the compositions together. This is probably what led to them finally crediting all of their songs to the band as a whole, starting with the next album "The Miracle".
I dont think that was the case generally
Freddie didnt interfere with Rogers song for the film
When he went on holiday Freddie felt it could be a hit so worked on it and Roger liked it
They didnt work on it together
Even if the songs they wrote were different they are very different composers as well as writters
You can see the difference between them
Brian did solos but it was agreed early on if he wanted to do that it would be uncredited
Ìf they collectivly composed or wrote a song it would be credited to the band
If you saw the movie highlander then the lyrics of the song would make more sense, love your queen videos
She doesnt know Highlander but she intuits a surprising amount about it just from the music.
Yes, Highlander Movie,
ooh ooh
Flash Gordon!!
12:41 That's Roger multitracked: he basically laid down most (if not all) of BVs for the track.
Nope. That's Mercury. Taylor did sing backing vocals on that song but not on that specific part.
So Who Wants To Live Forever must be coming up next? I think you will love it, one of their very finest
You must really be enjoying the scales in the guitar solos... Very classical almost, don't you think!
Amy's Cut needs to watch Highlander.
Actually, you're watching proper films there. This is a popcorn movie, but it's a good one.
Personally, I LOVE the original movie version of the song and find it far more musically interesting than what ended up on the album. It's more of a rock song, a bit darker, and the instruments do more interesting things.
It was my first full Queen album lol
funny you should bring up the feeling of "eternity" from this song as i think this was written for Highlander the movie about eternal life..
Yes! I was going to mention that too. Especially Innuendo & I'm Going Slightly M ad. Must watch the video for Mad. It's the best!
it wasnt strictly written by roger taylor, one vision and a kind of magic was originally 1 song and as you said freddie helped turn it into 2 songs
@@Chopin1995
Passing windows bass was same / similar to brake thru
WOW you just discrabed the movie Highlander, all this songs are the soundtrack of the movie.😮😮😮😮😮, amazing.
Queen- Live at Wembley
check Innuendo by Queen / George Michel Father figure , Killer/Papa was a rolling stone live 93' concert of hope and collab with Aretha F.
