This song truly has everything best we love Queen for: Roger's powerful drumming, tasteful basslines by John, Brian's trademark guitar work, and one of his best solos, Freddie's piano, complementary keyboard/synth parts, multi-layered harmonies by all! singing members, and, last but by no means least, one of the best deliveries from Freddie. In this regard, for me, this is the quintessential Queen song. Brian, talking about the song in a 1986 interview: "It's kind of a traditional "Queen" sound. If you remember "We Are the Champions" or "Play the Game", it's in that kind of mold. It has all the Queen trademarks. It sounds very complete.":
What I find interesting about this song is how well Brian May's guitar parts fit with Freddie Mercury's vocals. Brian May is very clever when it comes to the quieter songs, he restrains himself in terms of complexity and volume so that he doesn't overwhelm Freddie's vocals. In some songs Brian's guitar parts leave you shell-shocked but here the guitar parts and vocals flow into eachother beautifully and at some points the vocals are on top of Brians lead parts. They never feel like they're competing though and that's what made Brian and Freddie such a great team.
Beautiful on the harp Amy! This song was the Queen song played at Freddie Mercury’s funeral. Such a feel good song with Freddie’s powerful voice! Love your insights. ❤
You should really check out the Beach Boys "God Only Knows". The chord progression is very rare and I think you would really enjoy analyzing this song. Plus the vocals are top notch!
Song is So Freddie … and John actually. Freddie was such an emotional person and songwriter. He wore his heart on his sleeve and if he loved you he would make sure you knew it… at least that’s what all his friends say about him. Freddie had many friends who were friends for life through thick and thin.
If you like the Call-Back to the more melodic Queen in this song, I can't wait for you to review "Who Wants to Live Forever" and "Those Were the Days of Our Lives". I also hope that Vlad put "Delilah" in your list.
Brian plays lead guitar, while John Deacon plays rhythm guitar (so not only the bass). Deaky also plays the guitar on "Don't Lose Your Head" & "Pain Is So Close to Pleasure"
Wow! This video, displaying your harp work, speaks to how talented and knowledgeable you are, Amy. As a singer songwriter I get so much out of watching and listening to you explain how the chord structure works to support the song. Most people watching this will not understand the talent, skill, and experience it takes to pick that out by ear and then explain what is happening. This is why i keep coming back to a musical expert to learn.
Hi 👋 Mrs. Amy, Lovely reaction and fantastic explanation of this piece colorful harmony. I just wanted politely remark Brian’s guitar here, the solo that continues when Freddie starts to sing again, the treble peaks, the red special/sixpence/Brian’s hand combo sound that carries on its shoulders the burden of replacing an entire string section, in final symphony…. Absolutely incredible. Thank you. Have a good summer
My favorite Queen song! The person who made the connection with "We are the champions" was Brian May, because according to him, Freddie felt very strongly about this song, and wanting to get the feel right. As allways, he chose the right chords to it! Absolute genius!
actually both Freddie songs have extensive LEAD guitar tracks that are buried under the vocal track. That is the similarity between the 2 from the view of Brian.
The extended version (music video version) has members from the Queen fan club in the video and their group chant is included acapella at the end. So I definitely think the relationships are for all people not necessarily a single story.
The similarity with WWRY and We are the champions is in the anthemic style this song portrayed and was built for. Great guitar, and the piano is more obvious in the extended version and in the Live versions. There must be a follow up to this serie of Queen with a Queen Live serie. It will also showcase another side of Queen which is totally different than the studio experience.
I would also take a look at the official music video and again how they include their fans even at this stage of their career inviting them to be a part of this whole thing, it's definitely not a us and them kind of group it's a everyone welcome
Agreed, back to a classic Queen, playing the chords to the chorus to this or the bass roots is very fun, it always feels good to play the bass riff on this for fun. Even with the synths, this feels old school, i love Brian's little wah solo on the ride out of the end.
I always interpreted it as being about a gay couple, "lover" is what they usually called each other back then, not "partner". It fits Freddie's life really well, too. He wrote it, he sings it, it's about a "him" who left, which did happen to Freddie multiple times, including shortly after The Works, iirc... (and I never thought of the "children" being the ex-couple's children in the first line :D ) Fantastic with the harp.
There's named piano peace's so there is really Freddie's geniality because he wrote quitar side vocals 😂 rhythm on piano originally so that's that piano thing Amy you can play piano version of this so simple I think in first verse there's piano under the drums even if I listen correctly and it has even little very small arpeggio in the end of verse It's just left hand drive piano I think except that arpeggio
This lack is probably due to the difference in musical views: Roger has always been more hard rock, while John was more inclined towards pop and disco.
Maybe Amy will have a close listen to Freddy Mercury's song Time from the musical of the same name? It's not really a Queen style song but it is strong on the vocals, piano and composition.
a real good song written by Freddie and Jhon and speaking about their self-friendship. Here Freddie and Jhon, basically reassure themself about the reality of their friendship feeling. When Freddie died 5 years later, Jhon saied that, in his opinion, Queen were dead with Freddie. In fact, he has never appeared with Queen during this 33 years. The only exception has been for the recording of one song, called 'No-one but you' in 1997 and, obviously, to finish the recording of their major album 'Made in Heaven', that was a real Queen album even if full of re-worked Freddie's solo songs or old B-side (reworked) or songs written for other occasion (as 'My life has been saved', written by Roger in 1988 first for the 'The Miracle' Album, than, if i well remember, used for his own band called 'The Cross' and included in their album), or to complete the real Queen songs of that album ('it's a beautiful day', 'Mother love', 'A winter's tale', 'Let me live', 'You don't fool me'). This song was born , as 'One Vision' , as not part of the 'Hightlander' movie music and that's why it could be considered a 'authentic' Queen song. It is a good song, very easy listening as the 95% of the 80s Queen songs. I think it's nothing of really interesting or relevant valuing it on an artistic matter (meanwhile i personally like this song) and, it's like very deep song with a real specific meaning voluntarily included in the lyrics by the composers.. Basically here Jhon is reassuring Freddie about his friendship and emotional closeness in all the cases (like his HIV-positiveness for example) and Freddie is Thanking Jhon for this feeling.. There's a very important thing you should know about the 80s Queen.. They switched their artistic 'greatness' from the composition itself, to the Videos. I mean that, in contrast with their leak of musical commitment, they did real Artistic Videos.. Very Challenging to do it.. Real examples are 'Radio gaga', 'It's a Hard life', 'A kind of Magic', 'Under Pressure', 'I want to break free', 'The Miracle', Breakthru', 'I'm going slightly mad', 'Innuendo' (but Innuendo is a Real milestone of world rock also as composition).. Well, if they decided to 'regress' musically to ride the music changes, they did it not regarding Videos...
Outstanding as always. I want to echo an earlier comment suggesting “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys. Its special the way “Babe. I’m Gonna Leave You” is special - songs in a league of their own.
I know what I want to comment on isn't for this video. But I really wanted to comment on your series of analysis of Pink Floyd The Wall. And I wanted to get the best chance for you to read this. Anyway I was watching Pink Floyd videos and a reaction video "by you" and I was surprised about how you analyzed it. So very well done and spot on. Then I saw you did the complete Wall album. I went back and watched them all. Now mind you I've listened to Pink Floyd since Dark side of the Moon came out in '73 I still have that album and I still have The Wall album along with other Floyd albums. I just want you to know I appreciate hiw well it was done and now I'm a subscriber.
I wait with bated breath for Bijou. She needs to hear it and then hear Where Were You by Jeff Beck. Perhaps a Jeff Beck weekend, let alone check out Malmsteen Black Star or Arpeggios from Hell, Satriani Always with Me Always with You and A Day at the Beach, Steve Vai For the Love of God and Ya Go Gak
If you are looking for more piano ballads by Freddie you can find some more on his solo record “Mr bad guy” (85) or in “The Freddie Mercury Album” (92) though some of them were not written by Freddie
The song was written by Freddie and John, SPECIFICALLY for the then upcoming Magic Tour as a sing-a-long. It was its whole raison d'etre, and you can tell. It smacks of Freddie and John's writing style. You can hear them all over it. John and Freddie both used piano to compose and the Piano/Bass style tell you everything. John was a very good guitarist in his own right and they will have more or less known what they wanted Brian to do.
✨️If you want to see an amazingly good concert with Queen, l recommend you too see Live in Budapest 1986, full concert. At this concert they perform with Friends will be friends.✨️
I wonder if this was written once Freddie knew he was suffering with HIV; as far as 'the children are creating' - it means they're 'playing up' - ie : being a nuisance, scrapping between each other, causing things a parent has to deal with, but doesn't really appreciate !
Friends Will Be Friends (Extended Version) 6:13 Written by Freddie Mercury and John Deacon Appears on: UK Friends Will Be Friends 12" vinyl Friends Will Be Friends was released as a single in the UK on June 9, 1986. It was released on 7", 7" picture disc, and 12" vinyl formats. The 12" vinyl has an extended version that still has yet to be released digitally. I also can't really identify with the sentiment in my own life/experiences so it doesn't connect with me in that way at all.
Shame you only stick to the singles cause One Year Of Love is such a beautiful ballad and exceptional also because it is one and only case in Queen repertoire that a song has sax solo in it. Brilliant
I don't think that Amy will stop listening to Queen after the 50 songs. I guess there will be more album songs after this selebration of 50 years of Queen...
Too bad this song wasn't played live, other than between We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions in 1986 during The Magic Tour and in the key of F major.
Friends leave you too. I am at a stage of my life where my former friends are more involved with their partners, children and careers. Is there a song about that?
Yes, this song feels like it was written like the old Queen songs in terms of lots of functional harmony and sweet chord progressions with strong big melodies, just with modern production...I still miss the classic instruments however. You can tell Freddie's struggling with this one too... nearly all the notes are screamed out.
There is a lot of belting. Freddie very rarely screamed, and even if he did scream he was a rock singer so it would not be surprising. Freddie's voice became far more dramatic and heavier over this period. Unfortunately people often accuse more dramatic singers of screaming, when the are not actually screaming.
20:20 Amy, you played the wrong chord on your harp! How CAN you?! Really... It's going from G to B7, not from G to Eb. That you don't HEAR this!... Ttsss, I have no words for this. Just like when you didn't hear that John Lennon played an E major in "Imagine".
The second chord of the intro is not D, it is B7!! For a classically trained musician, surely you can hear that... The second chord of the Pre Ch is consistent with the intro. Not rather than D, they are both B7.. No you still haven't got it - I give up.
It's all very well performed, of course, but I'm afraid this is one of those songs that feels like every segment or phrase is an ending. It's a tendency Queen and Freddie in particular can have, to 'anthemise' things at the drop of a hat. It probably comes from needing to write things that could fill large stadia with their sound. I don't hate it and it's a nice chord sequence, but overall it does sound like a rather predictable slice of Queen. I much prefer it when you played those chords on the harp.
Well, you are right. John and Freddie wrote it with the forthcoming tour in mind. It was written for a sing-song....that is it exactly. It just smacks of John and Freddie
Freddie's voice and Brian's solos are like harmonious friends who live in each other's spaces. This is harmony on another level.
Probably my favorite Queen album. Can't wait to see you listening "Who Wants To Live Forever".
Yeah, A Kind of Magic always gets overlooked. So does The Works.
@@TheyCallMeMr.Fahrenheit Love The Works too.
I anticipate that there might be tears. It's such a moving song.

one of the best guitar tracks put on a Queen song
i mean its good but its a weak guitar track, its quite lite, there is 10 songs at least with banging guitar tracks
Rather cheesy for my taste

I love the sound of the guitar toward the end of this song, especially the last ten seconds.

There's an extended instrumental version of this on the japanese CD issue called "Friends Will Be Friends Will Be Friends...". It works.
A good song, but can't believe that fans raid it higher than One Year of Love from John Deacon.
An anthem to friendship.
GOSH PLEASE WATCH WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER💀 IM DYING HERE

Yes. It's a common phrase in Britain but probably isn't something that Americans or other English dialects would recognise.

Fab Amy. Remember he's gay, so it can quite easily be male-to-male story? Either way, a great track with a relatable, anthemic vibe.

It's a good song, but I've always felt that it's a bit too bombastic. I can easily imagine it being toned down a bit, and I think the message would come across
more effectively if we didn't have heavy power chords and Freddie screaming himself hoarse.

The second chord of the intro is not D, it is B7!! For a classically trained musician, surely you can hear that...
The second chord of the Pre Ch is consistent with the intro. Not rather than D, they are both B7.. No you still haven't got it - I give up.
The lyrics are talking about all kinds of people, not one particular relationship.
As a gay man - the song is probably the reason the Official Queen Fan Club make all the best videos
Friendingtons will be friendildos..
Tom Waits. Hi ho hi ho 😊
Why does it take 25 minutes for you 2 react to 1 song?
It's a gay marriage my friend, they are booth he 🙂
“Your big daddy has got no place too stay; bad communication: I feel like the president of the usa. I’m mister bad guy’. From Mr Bad Guy song
#GabrielHenrique I leave as a suggestion the very talented Gabriel Henrique
Brian's guitar tone is abrasive and off-putting. Not their best by any means
One of the most inconsequential songs in the catalogue
Boring. Everyone doing their thing but no innovation whatsoever
Why are you always in the same clothes? I'm too suspect to subscribe.
