    How in the hell can a group of dudes who haven't all been physically together for over 30 years save a person's life? Well, 10 years ago they saved MY life. I wanted to die but somehow, I "found" Queen. And Freddie. The more I listened, the more I fell in love with the band and the music. The more I listened, the happier I felt. The more I saw, the more I imagined how terrible it would be to NOT hear them ever again. I can't imagine any of them ever heard my name, and certainly not Freddie since he died when I was only 7 years old, but SOMEHOW, these 4 guys saved my life. I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous, but it really is true. To me, Freddie is an angel and Brian, John and Roger are exactly what Freddie said they are: the messengers of the gods.

    “I hang my head and I advertise, a soul for sale or rent. I have no heart, I’m cold inside, I have no real intent” is one of the best lyrics written IMO. The official video for this song is sad and beautiful at the same time. The 1981 Montreal live performance is amazing. Please watch them.

      I was going to say that the Queen Rock Montreal performance was just amazing. I love how they arranged the song for a live performance having Freddie solo on the piano replacing the multilayered guitars in the studio version. And of course Freddie's vocals are just amazing.

      I'll tell you what I think IS one of the best few lines of lyrics in any song :-
      When I'm shaking a hand I'm clenching a fist -
      And if they gave me a pound($/€!)for all the moments I've missed..
      And I got dancing lessons for all the lips I should have kissed...
      I'd be millionaire...
      I'd be a Fred Astaire....!
      It's worthy of William Shakespeare....!!

      I laugh when Brian and Freddie exchange a smile and a nod at the beginning of the song, making sure they start together! In a previous performance, Freddie started singing before Brian comes in and Freddie said "Well it didn't fucking start so well that time!" 😂😂😂

    For the out and out heavy rocker in the group Brian could really contrast that with some of the most beautiful empathetic melodic pieces of music ever....why i love him as a musician......that guitar solo at the end as well! They talk about making a guitar cry that note he hit at the end ripped into the soul.

    It is a song written by Mr Sir Brian May. I read in an article that Freddie add some lyrics to this song, but was like he adopted the song and loved it and he just sang it with his heart and soul. He sang the lyrics of the others bandmates like if it were his own songs, with respect, putting on his own twist and soul.

    Yes ... Freddie and Brian are a perfect musical pair. So, the whole band mesh in a magical way and why they're the only band where all four members are in the Songwriting Hall of Fame. Freddie ignites them, fronts them beautifully. The 1981 Montreal concert really shows off their talents as individuals and as a 4-piece. Thanks for reviewing Queen and your musical observations of their genius. Please extend your series beyond 50.

    This song is ever in my top 5 from Queen. I don't know how many times it has made a tear come to my eyes.... Absolutely emotional song that brings memories of life. As you did with " Somebody to love", it deserves a view to the version from "Live in Montreal" ( For me is really outstanding to see how Freddie played piano for Brian and Brian for Freddie in the same song). And for another reason too: I think in some way, "Somebody..." and "Save me" are the same song from two different perspectives and authors. But, at last, both say the same missing, needing, Love. And curiously both are masterpieces.

    Beautifully deep reaction, observations and analysis. Such a gorgeous song. I vehemently agree, Dr. Sir Brian is simply tremendous, a true renaissance man in every way. Freddie, Brian, Roger and John's unique gifts with music and the poetry in their lyrics are practically alchemical. The music of Queen and Dr. Sir Brian's solo work continues to fill gaps in my soul I never knew I had.

    I really enjoyed both the song and your reaction. I'm really glad you like and appreciate Brian's songwriting and compositional skills so much. I agree that was the perfect use of synthesizers. Used minimally and to good effect here. Before they ever started using synths, I was alway amazed how Brian produced synth like sounds in some of his guitar parts. Loved Brian's emotional guitar solo on this one. Great explanation on the power of understatement in music for creating a sense of time and space, illustrated here through the simple and gentle drum cymbal strikes at the transition. How refreshing to hear silence while someone gathers their thoughts. And an interpretation of the composition, words and music, that could have been a script she'd worked on for hours rather than a completely extemporaneous cold reaction. I've always felt Freddie's vocals on the verses of this song are quite delicate and restrained (compared to other Queen songs). It feels like the emphasis is more on the lyrics than the performance, Freddie is really trying to say something rather than perform vocal fireworks. Of course, Freddie lets rip in the chorus and that has more impact because of the restraint in the verses.

      It sometimes feels as though Brian and Freddie have melded into one around this time. Brian's own voice had become stronger and, on first listens, to new releases I would sometimes mistake one voice for the other, particularly, as you say, on the more delicate verses.
      And let's hear it for Brian's piano skills by this period too. There's so much of Freddie's playing style in this song that it's easy to overlook the fact that it's Brian playing. That final flourish at the end feels pure Freddie.

    just to add that Brain always shows amazing restraint in not doing overlong guitar solos baring in mind his ability and the rock tradition of long solos.

    For me it's one of the best if not the best love song in history of rock, Brian is one of the best songwriters of all time, Roger's drums are spectacular, especially those powerful backbeats on choruses with his iconic opening of hi-hat on snare hit. John bass have unique melody not heard in any other part of the song, it's like living it's own life. The bridge solo is enough to bring a grown man to tears, "Each night I cry, I still believe the lie, I love you till I die..." is one of the most beautiful lines I heard in any song
    Listening to this song creates a ticking warm feeling in my chest and like I'm about to cry any second... I just can't how are they so good. And Freddie... His singing is unique for every song, I can't remember any other song where he sings like here, it's so intimate, it's a little buried in the mix, like a broken soul tries to break through "Saaave me!". And this beautiful compilation of piano (which shows on intro, verse and outro), acoustic guitar (which EXCEPTIONALLY shows itself on choruses and especially the bridge). And Brian's guitar tone.. oh my god, that "waterfall-like" moment on the verse, and it's the only moment where guitar shows on the verse, it transports us to pre-chorus I think, if you can call it like that. But oh my god it sounds like crying of any human ever, Brian understood human emotions on such deep level.
    I could write a few thousand words about the bridge solo, it's my favorite moment of the song and one of the most emotional moments in any Queen song for me. When Freddie sings "Each night I cry" - listen carefully - the guitar solo continues to sing with that silky, creamy tone, you can hear better on other mixes of that song. But you can hear the guitar choir actually ends only on "...the lie" and I don't think you can hear that on this mix, but guitar steps down to a note that would lead to other chord, not the one that played with acoustic. Acoustic plays C - D - G - C, and guitar leads more like to C - D - G - Em. It's just one note that makes difference for me (if you could hear that note on this mix). And oh my god the "main" solo... strikes from right ear like a LAZER. And so clearly you can hear beautiful sound reflections that creates space in the middle, like it literally stands (the guitar) in front of you and cires, screams at you : "SAVE ME! SAVE ME!". And then Freddie starts to sing, but the guitar continues: "NO! NO, SAVE ME! SOMEBODY HEAR ME!" and then it steps down with to perfectly complete Gm (I think) chord, iv - the arguably the most melancholic chord, all accompanied with beautiful airy Queen choir. And I like how on last Freddie's scream before "I'm naked.." you hear Queen choir this time singing "Sa-ave me-e!", especially can be heard on left ear. Freddie screams "ooh..", and you can hear distinct Freddie's and Brian's voices in the left ear. The piano on the end.. like a person that falls on the bed, tired from pouring all of his soul in this song, and we're left with this this feeling like: I expressed all of my emotions now, and I soon will be ready to move on, no matter if the message of this song is heard or not... I LOVE THIS SONG

      Yes! That is true, I tell people there are
      Many great songs than just all the hits
      Got my first Queen album in mid 70's
      And each new album was like an adventure, what kind of song is going
      To come up next, since they are all somewhat different even though the
      Basics are rock, and all 4 different influences of song creations.

    Freddie was able to adopt anybody's musical composition and then to fill it up with his own emotions. Freddie was always looking for The Love and a stable, loving relationship, but he wasn't really lucky in finding the right person.

    Save Me is a great example of Queen's attention to detail - instead of just repeating the same thing each time, each chorus being musically different
    eg (as you discussed, the lead into the chorus but also) the drums/chords halfway through the chorus - beats 3 and 4 of the bar right after 'Save Me Save Me I can't Face this Life Alone' - (including the refrain of it under the Guitar solo near the end) ,
    eg the sophistication of the backing vocal harmonies at the end of each chorus - before 'I'm naked and I'm far from home' / 'don't let me face my life alone'....
    This is something of a trademark of Queen - to put little details like this in to their songs where most would just repeat the same thing over and over - which you may miss until you spot it and then you find yourself spotting it in other songs too.... Sometimes it's chord or harmony differences, or melody, sometimes lyrics, sometimes the Bass & Drums....
    Save me is full of trademarks - wonderful Deacy bass, dynamics, wonderful backing vocals/harmonies, musicality of the drums, Brian's lush guitar harmonies in the solos, the tightness of drums bass piano (live too)...

      The live Version is good but in no way better than the Studio Version. There are very few songs out there where the live one is better. Maybe you mean more entertaining yet technically it is impossible to be "better" whatever that shall mean.

    • @mori1bund
      @mori1bund 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Ezekielepharcelis Better is always also a matter of personal taste and opinion. I like the Montreal version more because of the different instrumentation (more piano in the first half of the song, Brian played the piano instead of the guitar), and IMHO Freddie lays more emotion into the performance, while in the studio version it sounds more... I don't know... sterile, if you know what I mean.
      For my ears that sounds "better". 🙂

    • @Ezekielepharcelis
      @Ezekielepharcelis 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@mori1bund Okey so you like the live Version more and that's alright. I was just hopping on that "better as". Because that is technically nearly impossibe. For example I'm not so much a Fan of some Live Gigs as they tend to put too much focus on one instrument or the Singer. To me I think that Rogers Drums and the Piano were too prominent. Great for you if that is your taste, yet bad for People that like a more balanced Level for example. Studio certainly got a more balanced and optimized Sound. Freddie on the other hand once said to people disliking the difference between Studio and Live that they shall listen to the Studio Stuff then. And Queen knew quite well that some of the things they did in the studio would be pretty hard to recreate live. And they didn't even try it. Nevertheless Queen live was an Experience and I can understand quite well that many People like it a lot more. For a first time reaction I would still prefer the Studio, the live Version can be done too of course. cu 🙂

      @mori1bund 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Ezekielepharcelis Good points!
      And I agree that a first time reaction should be the studio version, just for the cleaner, balanced sound and the nuances that are often lost or difficult to hear with the live version alone (among other reasons).
