    The courage & sacrifice of Martha Jones has never been lost on this fan I can tell you. The dignified exit she has here is very underrated, she knew her own worth & Freema is still as youthful today at 45 to still come back too.. 🙏

      Yeah, sometime during Season 1 of their rewatch, Syntell and Rekkai were talking about how hard it must be to walk away from the Tardis and the Doctor (I think in reaction to Rose telling her mum why she wants to keep traveling) and it made me think of Martha's exit, knowing that they would get to see someone actually choose to walk away from it. While Rose is right that traveling with the Doctor changes you, changes how you see and understand yourself, the universe, and humanity, Martha made the smart choice, to leave on her terms. She isn't forced to part from him like Rose was, or abandoned like Jack, or dropped off and forgotten like Sarah Jane. Mad respect to Martha for walking away when she could. On rewatches of this season, that is the scene that, more than anything, makes her my favorite companion, I think. Because she chose herself, and that is aspirational.

    The face of Boe reveal was one of my favorite parts of this season outside of the masterpiece that is Blink. Freema and David Tenant did not know this was in the script and their reactions are real. I loved that Martha realized her worth and left on her own to do what’s best for her. Loving these Dr.who breakdowns! ❤

    The abuse that poor Lucy Saxon got was lost on me as a Kid but that woman looks like she went through hell! 😬 The absolute savagery that Martha's family were made to witness the massacre of 1/10th of the Earth was something else 🤯

    • @Llanchlo

      Agreed - most reactors seem to totally gloss over this aspect. Many don't notice the bruises on her face and body language in this episode assuming it is more about the slaughter of the huan race, not something personal. I think the actress does a great job and if you look carefully she is already showing how she is feeling trapped in the previous episode as early as when she is quizzed by the journalist

    • @Persewna4
      @Persewna4 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Lenkic13 yeah, unlike the Doctor's companions, her Time Lord with the Tardis could only take her to one destination in the future, and without all the wonderful things in-between the Present and the End, Lucy only got to see humanity's final flickers of light. It's clear her experience filled her with a nihilistic view of the world, with nothing else to counterbalance that. I do feel bad for Lucy too, although she helped facilitate the Master's rise to power, she was isolated from others while receiving little comfort from her partner, the Master. I thought her shooting him was a good mirror of Chantho shooting him at the end of Utopia; both iterations of the Master undone by his own companions, taken by surprise because he underestimated them, did not consider them as autonomous individuals but as extensions of himself.

    The Master's been running on fumes for a long time. He used up all of his regenerations in 1976. Since then he's been stealing alien power sources in an attempt to extend his life. In the 1996 TV movie, he tried to steal the Eighth Doctor's remaining regenerations.

    • @OldManFerdiad
      @OldManFerdiad 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      But he also tells The Doctor that the Time Lords "resurrected" him to fight in the Time War... the Professor Yana body could regenerate so he had at least once, so who knows?

    • @purpleduke3193
      @purpleduke3193 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@OldManFerdiad, ye it's been confirmed the Master is on their 2nd regeneration cycle. The 18th incarnation played by Alex Macqueen was the beginning of the new cycle, making Sir Derek Jacobi the 2nd in the new cycle. Everyone from the Peter Pratt/Geoffrey Beavers "crispy" Master to the Eric Roberts Master is technically still the 13th incarnation, but to keep things simple (especially when there's multi-master events like "Masterful" or "The Ravenous") the numbering changes per actor after Beavers.

    • @OldManFerdiad
      @OldManFerdiad 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@purpleduke3193 so I'm guessing for this 2nd regeneration cycle Alex Macqueen was 2.1 (is that Big Finish?), Jacobi 2.2, Simm 2.3, Missy 2.4, Dhawan 2.5 (and 2.6 if we count the 'forced regeneration', but who the hell knows how that works) plus potentially the new 'Tooth Master' too... yikes, they burn through incarnations almost as fast as The Doctor ;-)
      Gosh, funny to think that Delgado must have been incarnation 12 of his first cycle.

    • @purpleduke3193
      @purpleduke3193 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@OldManFerdiad Yeah thats about right, Macqueen is one of the Big Finish exclusives. He debuts in the excellent 16 part "Dark Eyes" story, followed by the 6th Dr story "Vampire of the Mind" & 7th Dr multi- master story "The Two Master's" (those 2 are parts 2&3 of a small trilogy). He also appears in the Master's 50th anniversary celebration "Masterful". He's a nice balance between the unhinged Nu-Who versions and the original presence of Delgado and is worth the look if you have the time (& funds)
      So the new cycle goes 2.1) Macqueen 2.2) Jacobi 2.3) Simm 2.4) Gomez 2.5) McKee (as the Luminat) and 2.6) Dwann. Although, it's not been confirmed whether the Master has multiple lives as the Luminat or if Dwann is indeed the incarnation directly after or not.

      Here’s the thing…I. The classic series it was very much shown that the Doctor doesn’t have human feelings. His quirks are alien because he is an alien and only looks like a human. In fact in the new Doctor who book series they show that Time Lords aren’t born they are created within the Great houses from a loom based on dna from previous time lords. So for him humans are only there so he doesn’t get lonely… his companions are really there just so he can show how smart he is and to keep him from becoming to dark. He doesn’t fall in love because that’s a human emotion. In fact the only reason he’s so protective of earth is to prevent alterations to fixed points in time due to his interference.
      In the classic series the time lord civilization still existed and kept the Doctor in check but would use him to ensure the timeline didn’t get jacked up. He’s a renegade time lord just like the Rani or the Master but he works to ensure time proceeds as it’s supposed to according to to time lord sayso….now that he’s alone he’s basically a god

      I always got the impression that those that didn’t like Martha was more for the fact of how besotted she was with the Doctor rather than her colour. Some people were hoping that after Rose the sexual tension would be dialled down but instead it was dialled up and put right out there with Martha! Most would say that Freema played Martha really well and was also incredibly beautiful but I’ve not heard any derogatory comments about her race. I forgot to mention and I'm not sure if anyone did: Max aired the edited TV version of this so you kind of missed Martha's mothers somewhat redemption. In the DVD unedited version of this episode, prior to Luxy grabbing the gun and shooting the Master, Francine gets it first. There's a scene where she is just dead set on killing the Master and the Doctor stops her. The intensity in her eyes and voice spoke volumes and it kills me that a lot of folks never saw that scene. And in turn, it led to the more dramatic part of Lucy shooting the Master cause now I thought the gun was disposed of.

    The thing I was always frustrated with was how they wrote Martha to simp the Doctor. It was such a bad decision on the writers' part. Everyone, not just the Doctor, was recovering from losing Rose, so her being in love with him made her seem like "the other woman". That put her on a bad footing with the audience before anyone even got to know her.
    People couldn't see past that into what a badass she is and how much she saved the Doctor. That's why this finale is in my top 3 - her badassery shines.

    Fans did not like Rose either. Rose was too mean to Mickey in their opinion of some (of the younger?) fanbase. And many classic Who fans just hated that there was any form of romance in the show.

    Fun insight: The Toclafane were actually designed to be the villain for S1 E6, in the event the production couldn’t get the rights to use the Daleks (Doctor Who is one of the few shows in which the writers and designers retain the rights to their creations, e.g. Steven Moffat owns the rights to the Weeping Angels not the BBC). So your comparison of the Toclafane to the Daleks is actually apt.

    I always felt conflicted about Marthas speech even as a kid. I mean now i'm older I get the whole power dynamic/rebound from rose thing and I fully accept that Martha wasn't always treated right and that needed to be called out. But that flatmate story was a little bit of a reach, if the genders were swapped and it was a guy obsessed with a girl because she never looked at him twice and he spent all day talking about her that would be a huge red flag but when it's a woman it's the guys fault for not liking them back? I really like how Martha knew her own worth in the end, called the doctor out and left on her own terms but...nobody owes you the relationship you think you deserve with them.

  • @grabtharshammer
    @grabtharshammer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I don't believe there was much racism from most fans reference Martha, she had been around quite a while at this point. Much of the original antipathy toward her was because she replaced Rose, who is TRULY loved by fans and was the very first of the companions in the new era. That was a very big hill to climb for her character and personally I think she did an amazing job overcoming the resistance to her. In fact, it may well have helped that she is black and so different to Rose. You also have to wonder how much the fact she had already played a "villain", as her "cousin", at Canary Wharf had any bearing on the resistance to her. I do believe that by the end of this series Martha had very much cemented her place as THE companion, and she was missed.

      I have mixed feelings. I'm an American so I can only tell you what I saw and felt at the time: Martha *and* Freema were both outsiders, both replacing a beloved white female star and character, in a role central to British popular culture during a time when losing European identity was an issue. Paradoxically, she hit Obama-mania in Europe or America, so..... (shrugs shoulders)

    • @grabtharshammer
      @grabtharshammer 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@IsiahBradley I think I get you, but something to remember is that Freema played the part in 2007 (returning in Torchwood and DW later occasionally). There really wasn't much thought in the UK about the EU at that time. Sure there were the usual idiots like Farage, but no one took any notice of him. It wasn't until 2010 when the Tory's failed to win enough votes to form a government (after years of "New Labour") They had to form a Coalition with the LibDems and this pushed them further to the right as they began to fear Farages Party which had cost them votes. In 2013 Cameron in an effort to win back Tory Votes announced that he would hold a referendum (which he did in 2016) This was also when Johnson changed his stance (as he saw an opportuntiy to become Leader) and suddenly came out against the EU which he had always supported. Cameron resigned, May became Leader and had to enact the Referendum. The rest is history as the right wing lied to the people and conned the voters into (just) supporting the Get Out vote (52% to 48%) - So I really don't think you can attribute any UK "Patriotism" to the reaction to Freema years before

    I obviously don't feel sorry for The Master or any sympathy for him in these episodes. But the scene of The Doctor begging him to regenerate and then groaning in pure agony after he dies, always makes me teary eyed. I feel so much of The Doctor's loneliness in that moment, where the second he thinks he has the chance of no longer being the last of his kind and being able to spend his life with his childhood friend (turned enemy), it's taken from him and he's back to being alone again. I can only imagine how much it hurts and of course this is all brilliantly sold by David Tennant's absolutely masterful performance.

    🤣I love the Z formation🤣Disney Whovians should be called WHOplusians! I would love to be a part of your "tribe" though I've been with Doctor WHO since I was 5 and my dad brought me VHS tapes of the 4th Doctor from a convention in the early 80s! If you do the math, yes I'm 48, tellin on myself here.
    The Master ran from the war, but not before he fought in it for a time. Remember he said the Time Lords brought him back to fight For them, the implication being (and confirmed in expanded media) that he got a whole new life cycle from them as a trade for his services, his ruthlessness they required. I wouldn't say he is a coward so much as he is all about self preservation and self interest to the exclusion of all else. I also think he hate The Doctor in part because he has an inferiority complex when it comes to The Doctor. He's the only one that can best him, and it drives him more insane than he already is. He always comes back to the Doctor because he has something to prove. He could've just run off across the universe somewhere, but no, he went to strike at 21st Century Earth, the Doctor's adopted home away from home.
    Martha... I love Martha, she's a great character. I enjoyed her arc. I know others did not. I know others won't like Ncuti for the same reason too, and it is dumb AF, but that's the way it is sometimes. In Audio drama the 6th Doctor met HP Lovecraft, who was a famous author, but also famously he did not care for people who were not white like him. The 6th Doctor tells him the following, and I know this almost by heart because I clipped it to take to my dad's house to play cause I knew he'd like it too:
    "In all my travels I have never met anyone who professed a doctrine of hierarchical bigotry who didn't place themselves at the top of their social order. It's a blind, hateful, cruel, and cowardly arrogance. It is the rankest of stupidities. And the truth of it is, the people who hold such views, make themselves the worst of humanity. They are always the real monsters... The premise that you are somehow superior by virtue of your birth or heritage, is the most ignorant, poisonous, and conceited idea you could possibly entertain."
    And on to final thoughts:
    I did like Altered Carbon too, and another show a lot like it: The Doll House, starring Eliza Drushku who was Faith on Buffy and Angel. That was a phenomenal show that only lasted 2 seasons. I think of the Toclofane like Cybermen more than Daleks, but I can see it both ways. Oh and the Melania joke is fun, but if you ever heard her response to kids in cages, you realize she's just as bad as Don, like attracts like and they are evil together but separately. I pity Baron, what chance does he have not to grow up and be a douche too? Maybe he'll surprise us all and be like Ron Reagan Jr and become a staunch liberal! That'd be awesome, but I won't hold my breath.

    I'm both glad and sad you've already made it to the end of this season! Thoroughly enjoying the ride so far, looking forward to season 4 when after your break!
    So while you were discussing the Master, and how he didn't have the same experience of appreciating humanity after being one, as the Doctor and Dalek Sec did, it made me think of The Lord of the Rings. I never noticed it before, but the Doctor and Gandalf share some similarities, in that they are both very long lived beings who have a soft spot for a race of mortals that is not shared by their contemporaries. The Doctor has the Earth and humans, while Gandalf has the Shire and hobbits. They are both quite protective of their mortals, and often choose to spemd their time with them over their own kind. In doing so, they are afforded a different perspective on life, as seen by those who have a shorter time to enjoy it, and that nurtures their sense of empathy. In contrast, the Master and Saruman see only what they world can do for them, seeking to control others instead of understand them. For beings whose lives span hundreds and thousands of years, they may learn to devalue how precious a resource time can be. Seeing life through the eyes of human or hobbit can cultivate a respect and appreciation for that which is fleeting.

    Martha was my favs day 1, had a huge crush on her(still do on the actress), and it wasn't til years later i learned people didn't like her🤷🏿‍♂️. I read she did get some racists attacks, she says this herself, and i 100% believe a lot of people didn't like her because she was black and Rose was white and people felt betrayed like "how dare a black woman be with our white doctor" attitude. No point beung subtle about it, its how some morons are. However screw them inbreds, she is still the best companion imo, the most useful, resourceful, helpful, strongest, and best looking(if i were that doctor id have married her😂). Now most people rate her🤷🏿‍♂️, and i wonder how many of those people are the ones who judged her at first because of her skin colour and now dont, because now everyone likes her, so you know theres got to be plenty who pretend they are not one of them, but by logic it can't be everyone because most disliked her.

    I Think the reason people didn't take to Martha was because the fans had grown to like like Billy over the past two years and were gutted when she left. It was the same with Eccleston and tenant even matt smith the next doctor. they aren't liked straight away they have to grow into the role. People have their favourite doctor and that's their doctor.

  • @JustinMullally
    @JustinMullally 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think there were two things non-race related that pushed Martha down in the rankings: 1) The forced romantic interest in the Doctor. 2) she wasn’t a great stand-in for the audience because she was brilliant and understood everything quickly. The role of the companion has always been the role of the audience; the companion is there to ask the questions the audience would ask and Martha was often a step ahead. She was more a co-Pilot than a trainee.
