I always wait too long. Now I know I can just cut them and put them in water. Also, I love quick videos. Because after this I’m running outside and cutting Basil.

A little tip from my experience as a professional horticulturist - when plants are rooted intentionally or not in water, the transition of a plant that has developed water roots to a pot with a mixture is possible without removing leaves or stems, provided that conditions are given in the first period that are close to the conditions for growing in water only. This means placing the pot that is now planted in a plant with water roots, on a bowl full of water and creating swamp conditions. In the beginning, make sure that the bowl is always full of water and over time let the water absorb and evaporate. This will allow the plant to slowly grow roots suitable for growing conditions in the mix. Later, completely stop filling the bowl and water as usual.

Hey Brian, I saw you take the top off that transplant and thought, "Ooh, he will have enough for a jar of tea!" I recently watched Jess at Roots & Refuge make a huge batch of basil tea, and thought it sounded unappealing, but never one to make up my mind without trying, I made two jars of tea, one with Italian basil, and one with purple Opal basil. I don't like lemon in my tea (which she used), and I don't like it sweet (she used copious amounts of honey in hers), so I omitted the lemon and put two teaspoons of honey in a quart jar of tea. I had no idea how much I was going to love this tea. The purple basil cuttings had lots of flowers, but the tea was not bitter. Each type has its own flavor profile, but I have a new favorite summer drink. I actually like it warm, but it's sublime when iced!

its called "Holy Basil" and its very different than italian basil. Much better for tea, not good in pesto or salad. We did one big tea plant and its quite nice.

I have done the exact same thing…cut some to make pesto, put it in water and never got around to it and the roots start growing pretty quickly. I just planted a few new plants in my garden a few weeks ago and they are doing great. I love that you can just keep basil in water and it stays fresh til you need to use it! Time for me to do it again because my ‘old’ basil plants are going off again too! As for your videos, I like the short ones, and I like the long ones too - they are all invaluable. Mahalo so much for doing what you do Brian!! Aloha from Kauai, HI. 😎

    "Basil don't care!" Great t-shirt idea. 🤣🤣🤣
Great information! When I have bought basil from the store I always store it in the frig in water. That must prevent the root growth to some extent because I've never seen it like that. That's an awesome discovery! Thank you for sharing that learning experience.

I just planted cuttings this morning that I had in a pint glass for the last week and have 2-3 other grow bags with cuttings I planted into them.
One thing I like though, is at least letting a few of the basil plants to flower, and bring in the bees ;)

Another fun thing to do is chop the basil up, stir it into soft butter and roll it into logs and freeze it. Sauteing things in this butter adds a great taste.

😆 im struggling with my basil this year. I usually buy my first plant and break it out to plant out. This year I decided to start by seed.. killed my first seedlings with too much love (too much water in the greenhouse) started again and forgot to water them 😖 now I’ve got small plants growing.. but they seem to be a favorite of the June bugs 🤷‍♀️ I’ve started more seeds.. the ones growing are gonna have to fend for themselves. The June bugs are brutal this year. I may go take a few cuttings and see how they do! As always, thanks Brian 🙂!

Was just doing this today! With my more compact variety, I've had to cut the larger bottom leaves off first so they can reach the water, even in small jars. I also pinch back any larger leaves for cooking before potting up when they root. I only fill the 4" starter pots halfway, as they don't need that much soil and the taller rim provides some shade to the soil while they get settled.
