As you are hardening them off, lay the cups on their side and it will automatically start to curve up making the planting on its side easier because it will have started to bend up making it easier with less chance of breaking the stem..

Any growing tips on how to improve the flavor of tomatoes. Love the savory flavor of black tomatoes but some years they just taste better/richer than others. Is it weather related, soil amendments, fertilizer, too much water, not enough? Something is affecting the flavor just not sure what it is.
@@viridian4573 Pick the tomatoes late in the day! Even better, don't pick them the day after you water or it has rained. They try to conserve water by sending it down to the roots, and you want the sugars concentrated. If you have a wet season, the tomatoes may taste more bland.
@@elisabetk2595 the sweetness is there. It's the savory, smokey, salty flavors that black tomatoes are known for that is sometimes missing some years and very much there other years.
For 10 + years my tomato growing consisted of going to the garden center, buying 3 seedlings, and planting them in the flower bed next to my house. Then 3 years ago I discovered one of your tomato videos. Now, I have two 4 x 12 raised beds, 15 fabric containers, grow lights, drip irrigation and wonderful tomato harvests! yes that's the problem we all convince ourself we need more bigger and buy buy buy.. at this point because of you tube I'm a better hair dresser, better builder, better gardener, better cook, better mechanic, but this has cost me every cent and maxed out credit my cards. 😂
For many of us, we learn to do more of these things for ourselves to save money, to less reliant, not have bigger, better, more. I think u may be doing something wrong, friend.

North Carolina here. Have been gardening all my life even as a young girl. My job was to pour water in the holes. We planted around 150 tomato plants and canned everything tomato. As an adult I have been planting for 45 years. Starting my own seeds almost this whole time! Love the next few months here because planting seeds begins then moving them into garden. So glad many have gone back or started to garden. My saying is “digging in the dirt is cheaper than a mental health consult”. Enjoy gardening!
Yes it’s almost time to plant our seeds. I love my garden. This is the 9th year we have had one. If you ever get a tomato out of anyone’s garden then you will know that they are superior in every way compared to the store I call those in the store fake tomatoes 🍅. And no pesticides used

A new tomato video, yes! I used your main tomato videos to plant tomatoes with my alternative high school students. We used black solo cups, and got them in the ground before summer break. When they came back in the Fall, the teenagers were munching on dwarf cherry tomatoes for weeks. I don't think any of them will ever forget it.

I also like doing gardening with my little grandsons. Some of their friends do not know where the veggies come from. Some of my friends do not know the difference between vegetable and fruit.
Alternative high schools are the best! Kids get specialized, well studied, and practical learning.
Definitely one of those “…teach a man to fish…” lessons. You don’t know how many of those kids will use your lessons in the future, currently or many years from now. Great teachers leave great changes that you may be blessed enough to see someday….or not. But whether you get to see it or not, you’ve made that change! ❤

Thanks for the tips. I don't usually party and on the rare occasion I do, I leave early. Without even saying goodbye. It may be awkward for me to collect everyone's cup before they've even finished their drinks but if that's what I have to do for a successful tomato crop, I'll do it. Wish me luck!

@user-nx6ec7su4p You don't have to go to a party or collect used cups. You can simply purchase a sleeve of them in any store or online. Yes if you have access to cups that were already used then that would keep them out of the landfill but it's okay if you need to buy a pack. Don't let the lack of being a partier hinder you from doing this.
Growing for the first time from seeds. I have a 3-year-old who thoroughly enjoyed helping mom placing (playing with) the marbles in the cups and carefully dropping in the seeds.

I'm 62, and I've been growing tomatoes since I was around 8 years old. I bought a dime store tomato seedling that was about to die and planted it next to the air conditioner. It grew like Jack's beanstalk. I had to get a ladder and attach it to the eve of the house. Got just buckets of tomatoes. I've been hooked ever since.

I planted an almost empty net sack of onions going bad from the fridge into a hole from a stump removal and in a few years those onions got big as basketballs from the water and time growing .
The green onion top got fat as wood fencepost and 8 feet tall with a giat white onion flower on top and cars would stop run over and touch it and yell back at their car " yeah . Its real ".😊

Hi Velda, I'm also 71, recently widowed (sadly) gardened since I was 8 yo, but this guys videos are revelatory and even with a Chemistry degree, I've learned a TON of practical knowledge. First year gardening in Ohio zone 6a, and I'm going a bit nuts with the starts. I've got like 9 or more tomatoes I'm planning on growing, lost count (LOL) . And - Brian really does not like to eat tomatoes very much.
I had wish my dishes. So I use solo cups. Then instead of wishing them, I rinse, stack and then poke holes 🕳 on bottoms to not use them again. Come spring, I have plenty to use for gardening. Most can be reusable, year after year. If they crack, I rip them up, to use as a plastic label marker.
Some are ten years old at my house!
Always have a party! Always have a mega stack ready to party.!
I bring them to parties, so I can collect afterwards!
Hand wash! Not wish.

I will throw in one tip then for cutting those little holes he suggested in the cups for drainage. I have to do 40+ cups so instead of cutting each one by scissors, I stock the 40 cups on top of each other, use my drill to put 4 holes through the bottom all 40 at once, and 20 seconds later, they are good to go. Been doing this for years

I usually start mine early to mid March. Depends on the season when I put them out of course . Last year they didn’t go in the garden until mid June. @@badmotherhumper

You got this Christy! Tomatoes are really aggressive growers, so if you know the basics regarding plants in general, your good. Just watch or read as much as possible regarding Tomatoe plants just for having options and ideas in mind. Do you have determinate or indeterminate seeds or plants? Know the difference as I didn't my first year. They can get big and you can grow more as a single vine or more bushy with many vines depending on your space. Just remember even failing here and there is a great teacher and it's always a learning experience. It's all in good fun. Namaste, blessings and infinite bounty in your harvests!!

I assisted my parents growing huge gardens when I was 4. We children each were given 4ft x4ft square of our own to plant whatever we wanted. This was all preserved for our winter food. I grew lots of tomatoes in my own garden from 1974 until the present balcony garden as I am 73. I propagate my own seeds, the tomatoes are delicious!

Great video! I stack the red cups and use a drill to put holes in the bottom a bunch at a time. Credit to Roots and Refuge for the idea. My parents gardened, and this will be my eighth year gardening as an adult. Last year, I fed my tomato addiction with over 100 plants. I shared the crop, but no, that was not too many.
The best info I liked about this video is you started your seeds in a good size container!!!! No transplanting until it gets hardened off and into the ground!!!!
It seems like most of the garden sites on TH-cam have you starting your seeds in a tray of anywhere from 12 or more planting trays then you have to transplant so many times until you get them in the ground.

This is my first year growing fruits & vegetables. I started with tomatoes because I was told it's beginner friendly 😊
Northeast Colorado... gardening for my 6th spring season this year. Last year I used the 2 cup method and it worked well. They need to be put in a tray or container to hold them up. I had issues with some toppling over... annoying. However, I do put a lot of pinholes at the bottom side of the cups to air prune. Works great!
Usually I pour boiling water over the seed starter mix and/or microwave the moist soil to kill gnat eggs. The ONLY time I've had fungus gnats is when I overwintered rosemary plants and didn't change the soil before bringing them in. I knew better, too. Never again!

I have 2 Roma plants that I didn't get planted last season. I planted them in reused plastic containers from cottage cheese with a hole in the bottom for drainage. I wasn't sure they would make it, but now they are growing like crazy. They went from 2 inches to over a foot tall in a few weeks. I was surprised and impressed. They did require much more water as some of the leaves started drying and dying. I hope they will last 2 + months and I will get the biggest and earliest tomato harvest ever. Great video Brian! I start a little differently but your system will work great. May the Lord keep blessing you and yours.
Minnesota gardener here. All year long I save the large coffee cups from restaurant take-outs. I use a soldering gun to burn holes near the bottom of the cups. I like the idea of using a clear cup as a second cup to guage water. I'm gonna do that this time! Thanks Brian!

for just over 20yrs i have been experimenting with a technique that supercharges plants i start from seed. this process seems to work the best for fruits. tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, etc. are examples of plants that seem to benefit the most. the hypothesis fist came to me when i was using ripe bananas to ripen avocados that were rock hard. one night i dreamed a high speed film like dream of a fruit falling to the ground, rotting away, then new plant sprouting. that woke me up! and the experiments began. rotting fruit generate ethylene gas. it would make sense that fruits would take advantage of this gas. what i do is to place my seeds in open flat containers like plastic caps or trays. place them in a paper bag or cardboard box. place a ripe banana in it and close it up to avoid the gas getting blown off. i let it sit for a week or two. then plant. some varieties are so susceptible to this that you can see the difference as soon as it sprouts. seeds treated this way grow faster, are visibly more robust, larger, more fruitful, and more resistant to disease and pests. i have tested it for over 20yrs to eliminate other influences like weather, soil, disease and pest ebbs and flows, etc. the results are consistent. this even works on veggies and grains. try it our 🙂

I am in North Carolina and am 75, and have been gardening since I was bout 4! And have been living alone since my husband passed away in 2008. I have always had a garden my whole life. I-still do! I started planting tomatoes in red solo cups this year because of your videos! I have 25 tomatoes germinated right now in March. I also did 76 gallon jugs of winter sowing. Some of them are in the ground right now.
Been gardening over 50 years. I have used Brians tomato growing methods for the last3-4 years. I sow abot100 plants and when they are big enough I give them away. It's exciting to meet new gardeners every year and also visit with some of the returning gardeners. This year will be a much smaller batch as I am traveling right in the middle of tomato starting and planting!
I do the same, but on a smaller scale. I start about 35 plants each of tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc and give most away.

Alaska here , my gardening started back in Louisiana at a local drug store where I skipped buying a drink with my lunch at school and bought a pack of pumpkin seeds on clearance for 8 cents. I went out behind the shed and secretly dug 6 holes in the dirt with a teaspoon. For whatever reason those seeds grew like wildfire. We gave pumpkins to all the family and all our friends and still had pumpkins coming out our ears. Needless to say I was hooked after that. That was in 1979, the good ole days

I told a story in one of your other videos about my tomato growing experience. I started at a young age (7 or 8) and was taught what to do by a local farmer. I was hooked and have always grown tomatoes when I could. I’m 66 now and this past year grew more tomatoes than ever. Whatever I didn’t eat was canned. I’ve never had a lot of luck growing from seed but it’s a new year and I’m going to try again.
I saw this hack somewhere else but am giving it a shot this year for the first time. Someone mentioned placing the square bottomed 18 oz cup into a round bottomed 18 oz cup. I’ll try to add a photo. Thanks for the idea of the clear cup! I’ll be doing that for sure!

I am from the island of Great Abaco in The Bahamas. I have grown tomatoes for 30 years but always purchased my seedlings, this year is my first for starting my seedling. I used the double cup but my inside cup was an organic paper cup, when planting out it was easy to remove the paper cup.

Hi from Boise, ID. I've been growing tomatoes off and on for about 20 years. Skipped some years due to moving, condo living, extensive travel, etc.
New to gardening. Growing heirloom tomatoes from seed my grandfather cultivated. My sister then grew his tomatoes for 30 years. She has passed and now it’s my turn. Following your advice & have 30 double-cups w/ seedling stems & leaves. 2 questions: How long do I use the heat mat? When do I start adding soil to the cup - once seedling-leaves arrive or once tomato plant leaves arrive? I’m following your suggestions, though not perfectly: may have planted the seeds late in the season (April 27, 6 days after last frost). Didn't have grow light for 6 days. They did receive full sun outdoors several days. I reversed grow light hours - 8 hours on/ 16 off for a week. Doing 12 hours now. Will increase. Added vermiculite late in the game as I couldn’t find any. Just added fan. Having faith these seeds are strong & resilient and will still do well. Many thanks! Nashville, TN

Brilliant for the double cup method! I will definitely be trying it, especially for the watering trick. Knowing when to water both my tomatoes and my peppers have been my biggest challenge.

Been gardening 40 years. Tried the solo cups and they work great!! Had a 80 quart Tomato year plus lots of for my friends.
I love this new video! Used your previous video to grow my tomatoes last year (my 3rd year growing) and I harvested enough tomatoes for my family to eat all summer and canned 48 pints of diced tomatoes, AND I only had 10 plants. But most of all I love the trench method as some of my beds are also shallow. Thank you!

I started growing tomatoes with you back in 2020 when I lived on the CA Central Coast. I purchased what is now my homestead in Arkansas last year, and am putting in my garden beds as soon as the ground warms up. I'm ready to get my tomato seeds planted so, as always, this is perfect timing!
I've been growing tomatoes for at least 40 years and starting my own seeds for the last 25. I've never used the solo cups, but I'm going to try that this year! Seems like a good idea and will keep me from having to repot up from starting them in cells. Thanks for your excellent videos!
Yum! Tomatoes! I've been growing them for about ten years. I remember growing them with my family as a child but there have been many years in between when I did not have a garden (busy with life, I guess). Now, I am a gardener again and love growing our own! I think I want to try Black Sea Man this year.

I've never grown a tomato from a seed. Actually, I've never been very good at growing tomatoes! This year will be my first try starting with seeds. I'm so happy I found your video. Every year I try to learn more so I can avoid whatever catastrophe killed them in the past. I LOVE tomatoes, so I'm very hopeful I can make this work. By the way, I'm in Illinois (close to St. Louis, MO) and I'm 62. No matter what happens, I just keep on trying.
