      If you miss the seagulls, head to Bayshore beach on the west side, it's our favourite spot in the city. I love seeing the seagulls hanging around at the ocean. Orange is a lovely street.

    You appreciate the charm when you don't live there anymore. The house I grew up in on Germain Street had a basement foundation that was from before the Great Saint John Fire in 1877. Every room in the house had a fireplace - beautiful ceramic inlay. The architectural features included complex plaster ceilings, pegged oak floors and stunning tiled floors in the foyer and bathrooms.

      We hear that a lot from people who moved away. Sometimes you have to see what else is out there to appreciate what you had. We feel fortunate to have lived through how bad other places can be allowing us to appreciate everything that's amazing about Saint John. And as you mentioned, the architecture is jaw droppingly beautiful.

    Hello again, Les and Wendy, now I also watched this video as well, wow..
    An outstanding tour of what Uptown and surrounding areas look like..
    You are right on, unique, beautiful and seemingly vibrant SJ is a real character city..
    Les, you mentioned that it would be ok to ask you more questions.
    Ok, here they are.
    1. How prone is SJ (in your exp.) to hurricanes, floods, storms, compared to Halifax, Fredericton, and the other St. Johns, NL?
    You got the highest tides in the world.. New Brunswick floods and East Coast hurricanes do make news occasionally..
    2.Would you be able to recommend any cont. /website/realtor etc. specifically for an apartment rental Uptown (on month to month basis?)
    I have no car and would be looking for an affordable 1bdr in the area within reach to city center/buses/grocery stores
    You said in this video that some of these apt. build. Uptown provide such rentals, but how would i get in touch with them? (Asking this for the future planning because, like I wrote before, i cant afford to travel at the moment..)

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joan. I'm happy that our videos are helping you and others to consider what a life in Saint John could be like.
      Regarding hurricanes, floods etc., keep in mind we have only lived here for three years, but we did get to experience first hand Hurricane Dorion which was the biggest storm to hit the maritimes in several years. It was the most fun I've had in a long time, but then I like storm watching. The waves on the ocean were amazing, there were several big trees uprooted and some roofs were damaged but overall, nothing major and it was gone and back to sunshine in about a day. Hurricanes are much worse along the eastern coast of Nova Scotia and parts of PEI and NL. We are somewhat protected by geography here.
      Flooding can be a problem along the rivers during the spring thaw, but if you don't live on river banks its not an issue. Flooding from storms does happen in low lying parts of the east and west sides but not really in most parts of uptown as its built on a hill. We get storms called nor'easters which bring heavy rain and wind a few times each year which can flood basements and roadways.
      As far as rentals, we're not renters so I don't have much experience with those resources, however, I have looked at a site called prop2go.com which offers a lot of rental listings and provides really good info about apartments for rent throughout the city, including photos. There's no Craigslist here but Kijiji is also a good resource. The companies we mentioned in the video are highly respected developers that are largely responsible for kickstarting the revitalization of uptown. They buy beautiful but rundown buildings and restore them to all their original glory but with a modern touch. Historicadevelopments.com offers a variety of furnished and unfurnished apartments in restored buildings on a short or long term basis. Chipmanhill.com offers mostly smaller furnished suites on a month to month or shorter basis, also in their own restored buildings.
      Keep in mind there is no rent control in New Brunswick, as it has never been an issue, but some out of town investors have been making the news with huge rent increases, so try to rent from a local owner if possible.
      You do not need a car to live uptown if you are mobile, everywhere is walkable. There is currently no grocery store uptown but that will change within the next year or so. We did a video on the City Market, an awesome place like a smaller version of Granville Island Public Market, and there are other small markets too. Everything else you need is uptown including one of the two hospitals in the city. Bus service is very good for a small city and you can get almost anywhere with a transfer.
      Hope this helps.

      @@WeLoveSaintJohn Thank you so much , indeed!! And a double "thank you" for very useful links to the developers and to the rental websites!
      Yes, Uptown sounds like a place I could vibe with easily.I am very fit, so walking ,using buses, or even getting around in the snow is very easy for me, used to that and love it..
      I watched your videos about City Market and the mall , they are very nice..I heard you saying there, that the city is in the talks to put a big grocery ancor in Brunswick Sq. mall..So this is good news for ppl like me..(also sounds like this and the other big project in the city will create some more jobs too..)
      You are a gem , thank you for your time and again wishing you and Wendy all the best and positive in your life in SJ, maybe see you two there one day..Cheers!:-)))
      Edit: Just checked both of the websites (the ones of the developers) Very impressed..although these are expensive but still.. Definitely something to look forward to in the future..:-))

      @WeLoveSaintJohn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for watching. BC is very beautiful and mild but is extremely expensive for housing and we grew tired of all the crime, pollution and traffic. Southern Alberta is nice enough but still a lot more expensive than here, plus it has much colder winters and no ocean, which is important to us.

    • @WeLoveSaintJohn
      @WeLoveSaintJohn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@altay4room The population of BC is around 7- 8 times greater than the population of New Brunswick so there are more jobs in general. However, unemployment rates are similar and New Brunswick has a higher percentage of it's population entering retirement years which means there is a shortage of skilled workers. Pay is a little higher in BC, but it is nowhere near high enough to compensate for the outrageous housing costs. As far as pollution goes its twofold. There are constant air quality warnings issued throughout the summer regarding both the pollution from Vancouver that lingers over the area trapped by the surrounding mountains that creates a greenhouse effect, but also due to the yearly forest fire smoke that infiltrates the area from Alberta, BC and the western U.S. Climate change has made this worse every year. Pollution is less of a factor in the interior of the province, though you still get the smoke issues.
