Exactly. To me its about tuning out any harmonics and THEN if you are going after a specific effect go for the muffling. I have handkerchiefs, home made zero rings and home made mufflers like Paul Leim uses but only use any of it if the situation requires it. thanx again man!

yeah man! I confirmed w/ my Pearl buddies and that kit of his is the same finish and makeup, different sizes and different lugs (he has the CLs & these are the STLs) but otherwise its the same. I'm taking this to a theater show in Greenfield IN in Nov 30th so it'll be fun to hear it thru a PA

This is a very nice kit! These Masterworks Maple and the Ludwig Legacy Mahogany are the drums I dream of having someday. Currently playing an Export set, so I have a long way to go. Beautiful drums and nice playing.
Exports are great! After a divorce in 99 I bought a new Export that I still have and use for gigs if needed. With the right heads and tuning they sound great
For me personally, I don't think any modern Pearl kits sound better than the old Pearl Export series with the power toms from the 90's era. In my opinion they were the best sounding drums back in the day. I should have never sold mine. Power toms for life lol.
haha. My 1987 WLX has the power toms, its sitting in front of me right now at my insurance office. A cool classic look. My 99 ELX is standard though and I prefer that over the PTs

Masterworks sound great. A lot of high end expensive equipment that should sound great. Getting a great sound with mediocre equipment now that’d be impressive. 😊
The new cans look and sound great! I'd definitely hit 'em!...however, I sure liked the red/gold kit for appearances a little more. I am a little biased towards red...and play a red sparkle kit fade to black kit. Cheers!

Years ago I use to play at a big church where they mic’d everything but the drums saying they were already too loud. The bass drum sounded exactly like that listening through the oh mics. Add the large choir, the Hammond , and the bass guitar. I almost hated that job.
ugh, you've got to be inspired by the sound. At my church we've got it dialed in pretty nicely and my bud who subs for me always says how good the kit sounds thru the PA. Blessed!

Nicely done! My question: How does your back feel when you're sitting in that "right shoulder up left shoulder down" posture? Traditional grip is great but doesn't this lead to real problems? Dave Weckl seems to have his snare up high enough so he doesn't have to bend. In your video....I'm not so sure....
Great question. So far, so good. I do have a lower back issue but that was something from screwing around/showing off during a workout about 10+ yrs ago - it was immediate and I still deal w/ it from time to time. But on this, I've got it high enough like the Weck and others talk about - belt high to the rim - and I've got it slightly at an angle, left side higher. I mess with it sometimes but that position works pretty good for me. I have see that I lean that way somewhat but at 56 I'm still doing ok
That's some amazing Recording Gear and the kit sounds fantastic in all the settings you showed us. Btw. which Interface did you choose now for capturing all the preamp signals? Do you use any additional AD/DA Converter to capture them?

Nice job ! I have Zildjian Custom Hybrid ride. I loooove the bell, but when using the ride, the cymbal begins, then continues to bellow with long sustain. I’d like a Ride cymbal that has far more sticking sound with fast decay. Any suggestions? I’ll never get rid of the bellow machine because it really does have a spectacular bell. Just need to fix the ride issue. THANKS !
if you like the one i've got up here, although I don't think I used it much here - I have alot more in other videos - this is the 20" session series ride (and 14" hats) designed after Gadd's sound. I love it. great stick definition, bell, you can crash it but it gets out of the way quick

You missed soloing the 47jr when going through soloing the kick. I ended up with the Warm 47 FET on my kick out mic. The Audit mics are known for being a bit scooped, but for drums, that works really well for the drum sound. What interface/AD/DA converter are you using? ah, good call! the beta 52 and the 47jr are going into the HA273 above the WA273s. So no EQ on them going in. I did an audio track of the 47jr as well but figured it wasn't as nice sounding w/out processing so I left it out. have you compared the jr & FET? I know its about a $500 mic on reverb so I'm not in a big hurry to upgrade but am curious what your thoughts are. Interface is the Studio Live 32s - that's usb'd into the mac studio and I'm running Studio One v5 (still). I did a short clip of the SL32 as well but thought it'd be too long of a video for what I was wanting to show today. I'm gonna do another studio tour video and will do all of that stuff

I have a Yamaha Sub-Kick I was using for my kick out and I heard the Warm 47FET on a track recorded/mixed by Joe Carrel done at the Warm studio in Austin and I really liked how it sounded but I'm sure he was also printing EQ which added that extra low-lows on the kick. That part I'm still trying different things in terms of EQ. I didn't really compare the 47FET with the 47jr it's just I know that a Neumann 47FET was pretty standard on a kick out so since the Warm was considerably less money, I gave it a try. The PreSonus gear is good. I recorded and mixed a CD for some friends of mine on a 16 channel version of their Studio Live board about seven years ago and it turned out pretty good. In my home studio I was originally using two of their FireStudio Project interfaces for my drums but now I'm using two Universal Audio x8p units so I have 16 channels to record my drums. I have both Pro Tools and Cubase as my DAW. Studio One is cool, I know a few folks using it. They're all just a tool to get stuff recorded/mixed etc. Someday, I'll have to do a video but currently don't really have the gear to do that properly. Oh well, someday... Looking forward to seeing you updated studio tour.

Whatever Dennis plays obviously sound out of this world. They were not tuned high to me sat all though in the “High” tuning.

For me the RAW sound is it. Drums were designed to be resonant and acoustic. People who screw with that should just own an electronic drum set if they want dry box sounds. I have seen beautiful kits like yours on TH-cam and they sound like crap because of compression, E.Q., mix, over micing, etc.
theres's a balance for sure! I've always wanted to make sure the natural/raw sound is good, otherwise its fake from the beginning. Adding all the spices is just that - i love them and done properly they can really enhance the sound. But without the foundation - even when the average listener wouldn't no - just is wrong to me
100% true! I have DW exotic maple kits, only use single ply heads, no dampening except that the bass drum batter head is an EMAD with dampening ring, but no hole in the reso head. Why pay good money for great drums and dampen the shit out of them?? Most people really don’t spend enough time tuning their drums and therefore have to dampen as they are not pitch tuned well. Simon Phillips understands this.
i dont know why oyu type of drummers play without cybal locks on the stands, like , do you want the cybal to fall out while hitting it or miss an effective hit because of how much it wabbles? i dont understand , makes no sense kit sounds nice tho
Its simple for me - since I have been removing the toms alot to tune/swap heads its very easy to just lift the cymbal off and do what I need to instead of fumbling w/ the locks every time. Plus I've had them this way for about a year and never once has one even come close to falling off. I hope this helps!

Drums look amazing and great gear! But your outside kick mic is not palaces correctly. With side address mics, the name or logo on the mic usually correlates to the front part of the diaphragm. Put the logo side of the mic so that you can’t see it. We shouldn’t. Be able to see the logo. You will hear a DRASTIC DIFFERENCE! 🫡🫡
Genius! And you're right! I know why I had it that way. On the red kit I had that mic stand base in front of the snare so w/ the red - it WAS facing the correct position. When I swapped the kit and put the front head that you see on it (the one from the left red kick) the port hole is on the opposite side so I just swapped the two mics - didn't even think about the direction of the 47jr. Thanx for the comment! Its a little more "sharp" sounding now. Genius... :)
Probably your speakers/whatever your listening thru. At my office I've got the Presonus Eris 3.5s and the toms always sound too boomy on them. My KRKs sound great & our cars they sound great so it always varies
Def possible. I've been tweaking it since I got it, lots of experimenting. I had my bud, Jim Handley, out here last night who's teched for Paul Leim, Deen Castronovo and lots of other guys and had him tune the 12" how he would normally do it which was lower than this. So I logged what he did and will now experiment w/ the others based on how he did the 12". Its fun to learn all the options, even if they're not quite right

Experiment with some Gaffer Tape on the underside, and specifically, in the area in which you strike the body of your ride cymbal.

Wonderful sounding kit and processing/recording setup. What snare drum are you using. Outside so can't see the screen well.

i dont know why oyu type of drummers play without cybal locks on the stands, like , do you want the cybal to fall out while hitting it or miss an effective hit because of how much it wabbles? i dont understand , makes no sense

Its simple for me - since I have been removing the toms alot to tune/swap heads its very easy to just lift the cymbal off and do what I need to instead of fumbling w/ the locks every time. Plus I've had them this way for about a year and never once has one even come close to falling off. I hope this helps!
Beautiful but not Natural....Ringo Starr Ludwig drum kit was Excellent and Perfect without any acoustic sound...and people enjoy this until today The Beatles records

My ears have never liked the sound of a bass drum unmic'd. It just sounds so anemic.
yeah with the OHs it does sound weak but that was the point, just so everyone could hear all these differences. Thanx for checking it out!
Drums look amazing and great gear! But your outside kick mic is not palaces correctly. With side address mics, the name or logo on the mic usually correlates to the front part of the diaphragm. Put the logo side of the mic so that you can’t see it. We shouldn’t. Be able to see the logo. You will hear a DRASTIC DIFFERENCE! 🫡🫡
Genius! And you're right! I know why I had it that way. On the red kit I had that mic stand base in front of the snare so w/ the red - it WAS facing the correct position. When I swapped the kit and put the front head that you see on it (the one from the left red kick) the port hole is on the opposite side so I just swapped the two mics - didn't even think about the direction of the 47jr. Thanx for the comment! Its a little more "sharp" sounding now. Genius... :)

Probably your speakers/whatever your listening thru. At my office I've got the Presonus Eris 3.5s and the toms always sound too boomy on them. My KRKs sound great & our cars they sound great so it always varies

Agreed. Sounds like the bottom head is tuned a wee bit too high. Kit sounds great tho !
Def possible. I've been tweaking it since I got it, lots of experimenting. I had my bud, Jim Handley, out here last night who's teched for Paul Leim, Deen Castronovo and lots of other guys and had him tune the 12" how he would normally do it which was lower than this. So I logged what he did and will now experiment w/ the others based on how he did the 12". Its fun to learn all the options, even if they're not quite right
