Seeing you trying to "keep it together" all the way through this really brought tears to my eyes, El. I recently had a conversation with my older sister on the subject of "perfectionism" as a means of trying to keep control on our own worlds. Bottom line; in one way or another, ALL of us are suffering in our own ways, and so much of that ties back to stuff that was drilled into us as children. I relate to this greatly, so thanks for sharing your thoughts so transparently. Shed a cathertic tear or two everyone! 🙌🏼😢😂
Oh my gosh, you had me in tears. I was the child that just tried to make everyone happy and solve all the problems. My friend and I were talking about this this weekend, and she was the act out child. So, very relatable to see this posted today.

This sounds really interesting. Looking forward to it. It's always funny to see how unpopular fantasy/sci-fi is compared to contemporary fiction. The wait time for the book at my library is insane compared to even the most popular SSF titles: 22 weeks! So I'll probably have forgotten why I put a hold on it by the time it comes available. Haha

I actually owned this book, but haven’t read it yet. Your review was excellent.
I fully relate to the pressure of being "the perfect child", "get good grades, don't make trouble, go to your room and find yourself something productive to do". Things were going well... until they weren't, and then everything unraveled. Once the "perfect child" image burst at the seams, everything shattered. I fell into depression, then into 15-year long addiction, and when I finally came on the other end, I lost my youth, I have no money, no career and not many perspectives. I'm not old, but too old to restart my life. All I wish for is to write and publish a book because that's one thing I'm maybe not too old to start. I hope if one day I manage to accomplish it, you'd agree to review it because I'm so inspired by your videos.
So I bought this book not thinking it would be quite that heavy but I am more interested in it now having watched this review.

Just finished reading this on your recommendation. This book hit so hard in so many great ways. Saved a lot of quotes from this one. Masterson stole the show for me personally. Only criticism I’d say is I didn’t love the stereotypical contemporary ‘look what I did in my 20’s, can’t you relate?’ B role plot. But it was so minor I can easily move passed it. A new all time favourite for me. Thank you for your recommendation to help me find such a special book for me.

I also got this one for BOTM, it was a nice fast read. I didn't like it as much as Elliot, I thought that it struggled with keeping a consistent tone, it had predictability that starts out as that nice sort of anxiety-reducing predictability, where you kind of know things are going to be a happy ending, but eventually that predictability gets to a point of it kind of becoming a bit of a joke. I also found that it constantly undermined its own stakes and the 'games' were undercooked and so quickly over that they almost didn't matter. But it was still a fun read with characters I was rooting and an interesting concept that stayed interesting even if it didn't nail everything and there are some very poignant moments in and amongst the fluff. It was nice to escape into some lit-fic, which I always appreciate Book of the Month for getting me out of my fantasy comfort zone. A high-3, bordering a 4 for me!
I am kicking myself for not picking this up from BoTM!
I wonder if cosy fantasy is pushback after all the grim fantasies like Song of Ice and Fire where everybody dies horribly. :)
Best review of a book that I have seen in a long time! I appreciate your personal connection as you presented a very professional analysis :-). I have found that my childhood, different than most, has meant that I need to explain myself and my reactions to important people in my life. Reading brings me empathy with myself and others and provides me language to better express myself. The Wishing Game was one of my BOTM picks, too. Look forward to the read. Thank you -
