I was at a Fonda Lee/Kate Elliot book signing last night and got a little scoop. While CBS dropped the Green Bones Saga, someone else has optioned it. She contractually couldn’t give us more details yet. But there is hope!

I look at a huge range of "discriminating criteria" when I choose books to read, mostly to correct (what I view as) sins of my past...
When faced with multiple books to choose from:
I try to support female writers first. (One day about 6 years ago I realized that my very sci-fi and fantasy heavy library was 90% male authors and the only females used initials to identify themselves (e.g., J.K. and E.K. ) so I set out to support the under supported authors.
I still read an occasional mainstream fantasy book (because I read A LOT) usually a Brandon Sanderson pallet cleanser 😂🎉 Plus, I love watching BookTube videos (in case I've missed anything) but authors with more than 1k reviews (like Colleen Hoover) will never see a dime of my money.
Give me the stories written by the creative up-start minds... I will make time for under-represented burgeoning authors 💞

I am really confused about the absence of Gene Wolfe among booktubers. How on earth did that happen. It's like an MFA program without Proust or something.

  • @andrewf7732
    @andrewf7732 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jade Legacy was snubbed in the Goodreads 2022 choice awards nominations (it came out late 2021, but still qualified for 2022). Feel like fantasy outside of fantasy romance or fairy tale/myth retellings have a hard time reaching mass appeal. Kind of disagree on The Stardust Thief. I do see the commercial appeal, but I think it's very mediocre and mismarketed as adult fantasy when it's really YA. It has a lot of YA fantasy tropes, young characters, and doesn't have the level of plot/world building depth I expect from adult fantasy.

My mother's bookclub never reads fantasy. Same with the library bookclubs. I'm not sure how true that is for other bookclubs but I rarely see fantasy at all chosen. Elle, I wonder which books you'd pick to discuss if you had a bookclub?

This is a GREAT idea for a video!! Perspective is valuable. It made me think. I do wonder if the GR numbers are distorted by the demographic of GR. For instance, I think some of the huge fan bases (Sanderfans, Dune bros, Vineland Saga etc) live elsewhere, in particular Reddit. I have a suspicion that Hoover’s fans and Dune’s fans aren’t equally attracted to Goodreads.

Honestly, I'm not surprised at all.
The Name of the Wind - why would read a first book in the series when there is only 1% that will be last book and if it will be good.
It Ends with Us - women read more.
Jade City - writing style wasn't easy to follow, snail slow book without even one cool female character.
The Sword of Kaigen - self published not so much marketing.
Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea - no one loves, no one hates, no one interested.
Vinland Saga/Stardust Thief - don't know anything about them.
    🙂

I think having many ratings is also because some of these books are translated, whilst others are just available in English.
I usually read in English, but it's not my first language, so for example, with Jade City, i don't know anyone who actually knows it 'cause in my country, most of readers only have translated books :/

      4. Vinland saga...i haven't read any manga so i don't know how lets do 20k (5k??👀 Clearly i have not reduced my expectations enough but the anime is on Netflix- I think- if you are interested 😊)
      5. The Stardust thief- i have it on my tbr so and it is popular. Hmmm....15k-20k because my expectations are low lol (13.7k...wow...that was so low for a popular book )

Did she have a recent new-release come out or something?? (Kinda like how, when "the movie" comes out, stores will suddenly stock-up on "the book" for things? To brace for the resurgence of interest ? Or such ?) Lollll

I know that vinland saga is popular among fantasy booktubers, but if I'm going to be honest, I google manga first to see if I like the art style. There's so much great manga out there that if I'll be spending years reading one I want to like the art.
So, yeah, Vinland saga was a pass for me. Maybe I'll just watch it at some point.

Perhaps the problem is that some of these books are not translated to many other languages than English, because tey are too "fresh". Most people outside of the USA and UK read only books in their national language. For example there's a huge market for fantasy in Europe, but only a couple of the most popular writers from the world get translations of their newest books near the time of their original release in English. So, when I go to my local library or bookshop there's like 20-25% of foreign stuff, mostly classics and bestsellers like Tolkien and Martin, but the rest are writers from my homeland.

The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is awesome and I love it, it reminds me of a tiny trinket. It's cute and charming, but it's not an 'epic' and epic seems to be the name of the game in the fantasy world these days. I wish there were more well balanced fantasy standalone books. I read it around the time I read Nettle & Bone and they're two of my favorite books right now.

Jade City is the one that surprised me the most. I keep recommending it to irl friends because I loved it so much. But I realize that it’s kind of a niche thing that not a lot of people would be into. You have to either love fantasy or martial arts movies, and not many people out there in the world fit into those categories.
I often find this is the case with fantasy in general. It just doesn’t appeal to the masses. I’ve found my people irl, so I recognize I often get a skewed view of the world. But most fantasy books aren’t known to a lot of people outside of fantasy circles. Only the ones with popular adaptations really get to become that familiar to the average person. It’s sad, because fantasy is so cool. I feel like if people would stop being so snobby about it not being real literature, or thinking it’s just for kids, they’d read something in fantasy and end up loving it.

Not really a fan of the Green Bone Saga. I agree with you that the idea may have more mass appeal than a lot of other fantasy books, though.
My pick would be the recently completed ‘Burningblade & Silvereye’ trilogy by Django Wexler, which is a pretty great science fantasy adventure story with some horror elements. In my mind I could see it as a great animated series like ‘Arcane’. Some of the vibe is the same, and you have some of the same complicated family dynamics. I just had fun with these.

I loved The Stardust Thief and The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea (the audiobook was amazing!). I had trouble really getting into Jade City but I'll give it another try eventually. I have backed the Sword of Kaigen kickstarter campaign so I'll eventually read that too. I typically rate all the books I read, and for most, but not all of the time, I write at least a brief review. Since I mostly read fantasy and science fiction and am always checking out TH-cam for suggestions I don't typically worry about how much hype is being generated outside of BookTube. In fact, between your channel and a couple of others I probably have years of TBR possibilities to go through! :)
If you ever need or want random suggestions for videos, I would love to see your thoughts on books based on myths, legends and cultures other than Western European. I'm trying to actively read fantasy based on other cultures (hence my picking up the two I first mentioned above) and am always looking for good recommendations. Thanks!
