  • The June Bank Holiday Weekend brings a visit to the Bloom Gardening Festival in Dublin and a chance of planting up the cottage garden area, but the soil conditions, the weather and midge attacks are testing my limits.
Also, as a bonus, harvesting the first ever fresh potato bucket for this year!

Wow.. I’m watching you sat under a blanket with my heating on. I wouldn’t mind feeling a bit warm for a day or so at least… but not when I have any heavy work to do. 🫣😂
The show looked amazing, with lots of inspiration for your cottage garden.
Love the planting. The rose garden is going to magnificent when it’s all filled out.
Those red Duke of York are truly stunning potatoes. Seems five minutes since you planted them. Time flies!
I’m glad you downed tools and went for a rest. No point overdoing it.
As always, a lovely episode. Thank you for making such wonderful videos 😊

Thank you, Clare 🤗💚🌿 Very kind of you!
Highly recommend those potatoes, they were delicious and the harvest outcome of the red was better than the white version 😉
Thank you again for your kind comment and have a fantastic week! 😊💚🌿

Oh now I like the fact they are promoting creeping buttercup - maybe I'm ahead of my time :) Great haul of early potatoes there - we're still to peek in our buckets. The rose garden looks gorgeous- beautiful colour combinations. Well done!

😂😂 Thank you, Jane 🤗 I think we're all ahead of the trends with that one 😉 😂 one of the most annoying weeds in the garden these days...its like a race between that and the couch grass to see who can dominate an area quickest 🫣
The potatoes have been a welcoming threat, and planning to repeat it for next year, too 💚
I'm really delighted with the planting combinations so far 🙌 😍 saving up to do some more shopping 😊
Have a great week and best wishes, Maiju 💚🌿

What a lovely visit Posh! The weather looks glorious there now. Sometimes gardening isn't fun, sometimes it's taxing! That's okay to admit. I always drop tools & come back another day. All looking fab, but I'd expect nothing less from you x Danny 🌱

Looked like a lovely visit and so much to see 😮. We don’t really have garden shows like that here 😢. It has already started out as a crazy year here, slugs eating tomatoes beans rotting off and now 30+ heat and no rain. Your red potatoes look absolutely gorgeous they are all we eat really. Have a wonderful week Maiju stay smiling a garden should simply be an extension of joy in your life, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦

Haha when you were talking about there being no breeze I was like that's the point!!!🤣 Bloom festival looked great. Loved that pond/sunken garden one. I pretty much always find I don't get as much as done as I think I can, esp on the plot. Aw thank you for your shout out ❤ I might have to do potatoes in the greenhouse next year, if I can be organised enough 👀 - lovely harvest. The colour is stunning isn't it - matched your top! I react to insect bites too - got bites all around my neck at the moment. YES must sow more carrots. Lovely update as always Maiju. Can't wait to see the rose garden when all those salvias and the nepeta fill out the beds ❤

Thank you, Kerry 🤗💚🌿The cottage garden will be re-named to Midge, Bumblebee and Butterfly Garden 🤣 and they can all live happily and ever after there, I'll be visiting during the midge off-season 🤣🤣
For sure more plans for the rose garden to be added still, but the colors combined are stunning, loving it!
The extra early planting of the Dukes turned out perfect, I could have easily have left them to grow bigger, but the shaws were pretty much dead 💚🌿

Thank you 😊💚🌿 With my luck, I'll probably forget that I put a cream on, because my hair tickled my neck...then touch it or rub it and next thing I have to adjust my classes or scratch my eye 🤣🤣
My whole body goes into a ''fight'' mode once I've been bitten by midges a few times, and any little touch on my skin makes me twitch and reach out for that spot 🤣🤣

Would you go for a few native flowers Maiju? Great to support local ecology. Some of my favourites are mullein, foxglove, marsh woundwort, angelica, viper bugloss, honeysuckle but also nettle for butterfly breeding and some (controlled!) bramble as the most popular general insect flower and fruit for humans and nature.

Thank you 😊💚🌿and thank you for pointing out all of those plants, it will be very handy for anyone reading the comments 😊💚🌿
I will have Mullein and Foxgloves in the new cottage garden and plenty more native foxgloves along the hedgerows 💚🌿 We are blessed to be surrounded by native hedgerows - white hawthorn, elder, brambles, holly, ivy and plenty of nettles.
because of this hedgerow, we also have so many midges 😊💚🌿

Thank you for your lovely video. It was really nice to see the bloom festival. Seaweed, we don't need to import as we have Maxicrop which I used many years when in the business full time as couldn't find anything better, but you can send me some here as I have to pay duty if I buy from England, so a phone number or website for your seaweed merchant would be nice.. Those spuds are further over than mine, but mine are outside. You won't like it here then as it been just shy of 90 all week untill yesterday when we had big thunderstorms. We have midges here, but not that bad only when you walk through the trees. July and August yet to come and it has been known to hit 100+ and the heatwave we had in 22 it reached 111 here and higher lower down in the middle of the country I think they reached 47 c or 119 f, so too hot. Hope we see another lke that too soon.

@@spudsandroses Thanks you dear, but something wrong with the site as my computer froze up twice so will leave it a couple of days to let then sort it out then try again. Yes crazy weather here as well, heavy thunderstorms then 84, now only 68. At least the plants like it as when it's too hot they stop growing and start dying instead. So looking like a good fruit harvest this year in this cooler wetter weather. No complaints as 111 is far too bloody hot for me never mind the plants. Yes you see right or 44 c the other way, that what we hit in 22. even the midges weren't keen.

I really, really felt for you! I know only too well what stoney, clay soil is like as mine is exactly the same. I can sometimes steel myself and attack it, but when it's warm and I'm tired, it's just exhausting and hard to keep going...and then the midges...uuugh! Yet you kept smiling! Hats off to you! 👏👏👏👏👏

😍 I'm exactly the same, on some days the shovel feels as light as a feather ( and it is specifically only used by me and has a small head because of the ''weak days'') and then I get a nightmare combination of slightly tired to start off with with sprinkling of warm weather and a ton of midges 🤣

Well done for battling on against the midges. I too react badly to bites. I get one bite and then a whole line of bumps appear radiating from the i nitial bite. I find antisan helps a lot. I am going to try some natural insect repellent products this year to dee if they help. There is a large area, at the bottom of my garden that I just can not go in , in the summer months, and many of my roses and peonies live there- makes me really angry and sad that I am unable to sit by them on a lovely day. Love that Salvia you have chosen to go with your beautiful roses. It is going to look stunning! Happy gardening 🙂 x

I'm trying to leave as much full sun to the garden spces as possible because of this very reason....the midges love shade, damp conditions, and no breeze. So I'm hoping the space doesn't harbour too many of them, but the hedges side with the best wind shelter is their territory at the moment 😅

      @spudsandroses  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I'm sorry to hear that you're getting brown spot. I have no other organic method that if it is on only a few leaves, move the leaves and bin them....leave as much space between each of the potato buckets as possible, ideally no plant touches another.....but really it is to do with the weather conditions.
If they're first early or second early, I wouldn't stress too much, but for the main crop it would be best to try to contain it.😊💚🌿
