  • Lately, we keep hearing about Netflix's new legal drama, Partner Track. Curiosity got the better of us, so we had to give it a watch. In this week's video, we give our takes as two former corporate lawyers on episode 1 of the show and how realistically (or unrealistically!) it portrays the experience of working as a lawyer.

      As someone looking to get into the industry, it gives me a good perspective on what the day to day might look like. I've worked in the HR dept in a law firm. Super tight-ass corporate atmosphere. I did notice the lawyers stayed very late and started very early. No idea if they get any sleep at all.

    As a fellow lawyer, the first thing I noticed was also the lack of laptops in the board room. No way will everything get printed on paper and usually, terms sheets will be drafted with the commercial advisers of the buyer together.

      Uplifting white men and ridiculing Asian men while only showing white men as potential love interests for Asian (and other) women is getting real freaking old. It's so 90s and that kind of gross propaganda really needs to be called out.

    • @moniquewrites9046

      Aw man that sucks I was excited to see an Asian American tv show. We don’t see them as much as we need to. So sad to hear this but I hope the producers listen to your point that is so validated. Media tells people what to think about. And if they are telling the majority to think of Asian men as undesirable that disgusting to me.

      @@razmiddle9410 yessss. like my husband and i are both minorities and it’s honestly SO TIRING that the only mixed asian relationships shown are with white people.

    *Spoilers*
    If a lawyer is arrested, bailed and subsequently released unconditionally without charge, does this have any bearing on their licence? Are they obligated to inform the firm given they've already been released unconditionally so there's no criminal record?

  • @alui5362
    @alui5362 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    lol I generally hate lawyer shows because they glamourise the profession (and even watching the few clips you guys have shown have made me cringe like mad). the other thing that's unrealistic is that for a 2.9B deal, there's no reason the client would be so stingy and care about whether there are two senior associates or one. that's just weird. at 2.9B, the client wouldn't give a shit, and the partner would dump a whole bunch of lawyers on so you can maximise billings, lol.
    very interesting that you guys have found a content creation niche/angle post practice - hope to see you guys succeed!

    Being up for partnership as a 7th year (meaning 6 years into practice) isn't out of the ordinary for big law firms that have 2 partnership tracks. I think in the show they even describe it as junior partnership so sounds right to me.

    Yeah people wouldn't sign 2.9 billion dollar deal term sheet over the weekend just cuz the purchase price is going to be out in the news. It ain't gonna kill the deal necessarily. The idea that to respond to the public disclosure of a possible purchase price is signing LOI super quick is simply absurd (and to describe it as if it was some creative solution to the problem is even more absurd.) Also, if Ingrid Youn is an M& A associate, she shouldn't be reviewing Phase 1 Phase 2 reports or IP agreements. (I guess it makes sense that she instructs the paralegal to just make sure that that these reports are in the dataroom for specialists to review). Specialists do. I shouldn't grapple with nitty gritty details tho cuz it's not a documentary, and I have to agree the whole depiction of the process was fairly realistic.

    The really cringe part of the show for me was that she starts every episode with a science fact. We know she's smart but it seemed kind of odd and forced. I mean we know she's suuuuper smart. But not only is she a top lawyers, she quoted literature to her dates, and frames her life goals in terms of physics and natural laws. Seems like just a little too much all at once but who am I to judge.

    Interesting channel! As a formal magic circle lawyer working in HK, I agree with most of your observations. Honestly I don’t know why the M&A people think they are so great, you are basically doing DD exclusively in your first 3 years…the partner track period can be jurisdiction specific though. I’ve moved to Germany and here it is not abnormal to become partner after 6 years if you perform well.

      We’re not familiar with her entire work history, but winning a high profile case like that one can definitely do it - at the end of the day, a law firm is a business, so if a lawyer has the potential to attract a lot of clients, they could make a compelling case to be promoted to partnership.
